Work Text:
Clair dangled a small bundle of feathers on the end of a string above her dratini and watched it spring up towards it, only to fall short as she yanked the stick holding the bundle up and out of the little dragon’s reach. She smiled and tossed it a berry then turned to see a man in a suit and dark sunglasses striding towards her. He was carrying a suitcase and had a clipboard in his hand. Judging from how the Trainers she had peppered throughout the gym did not challenge him, she reckoned he was an official of some sort. As he drew nearer, her eyes focused on the pin on the lapel of his suit jacket - the Indigo League symbol. Her eyes went wide and stood up straighter as the man approached.
“Good day, mister-”
He cut across her. “Assessor. Assessor Hakusho, dispatched by the Indigo League. I represent the Gym Management Branch and come seeking the leader of this gym, Clair. I was directed to you.” He set his suitcase down and pulled a pen from his jacket’s pocket.
Clair suppressed her annoyance at being interrupted and replied, “Yes, I’m Clair. What seems-”
He cut across her again. “We have received six formal complaints concerning Blackthorn’s Gym. All of the complaints name you, Clair. Do you know why you have received such a high volume of complaints?”
Again, the dragon trainer bit back the desire to snap at the man and said as evenly as she could, “I am not sure, no. I would imagine there are a fair few sore losers that attempt the gym-”
“I don’t think the sore losers are leaving complaints, Clair.” Once more, he cut across her, scribbling upon his clipboard as he did. “I believe the sore loser is standing in front of me and sending rightful badge holders off on stupid errands empty handed.” He shot a single glance at Clair over his shades. His eyes were a piercing green. “See to it that you award badges immediately upon defeat, and not after a menial task proving ‘worthiness’ has been completed. The League has an image to uphold and the Leaders are foremost in representing it. You work for us.” He finished scribbling on his clipboard before cutting the sheet free and handing it over to Clair.
“How do you know you aren’t-”
“It isn’t hard to corroborate any of this with townsfolk, Clair.” He tucked his pen away and picked up his suitcase. “You are being fined a four percent gym revenue tax for the next three months, are being issued the first of your allotment of three official warnings in a five year period, and will be required to attend a remedial course on how you conduct yourself with challengers.” He fixed his tie and cleared his throat pointedly. “Good day.”
He turned on his heel and left Clair in silence.
