Work Text:
Just about everyone knew about Atsumu’s infatuation with his captain throughout his first and second year, and no one ever really realized why.
Atsumu has always had his brother, he had no reason to feel lonely his whole life.
But he demanded attention, he demanded the affection and pride from all those he loved.
Atsumu is not someone easy to love, nor is he easy to please. He pushes, and he doesn’t wait to ask questions on whether someone wants to be pushed.
So, slowly, he pushed even his brother away. It was fine, everyone always preferred Osamu anyways. He is known to be calmer, more level headed. Osamu is better at maintaining relationships, better at being a friend. And Atsumu has grown to be okay with that, grown to accept his faults.
But Kita, even when Atsumu wasn’t doing what he “should” have been doing, he still showed he cares. He made sure he was okay when he wasn’t feeling well, and that he didn’t push himself too hard.
But Kita was never something Atsumu could have. Kita had been in love with Aran long before Atsumu realized his own feelings. And Aran had loved him right back.
It was okay. Atsumu is used to being alone.
Not much changes when Atsumu moves to his own one bedroom apartment in Osaka and begins to play for the MSBY Black Jackals.
Not much changes when he befriends Bokuto Kotarou, nor when he befriends Hinata Shouyo a year later.
But then Sakusa Kiyoomi joins the team. The same beautiful boy he had seen through the net at many tournaments throughout high school.
The face that leered at him, that laughed in his face and called him an idiot.
The kind eyes that told him, for the first time, that he is smart.
The first person to tell him that they like him more than they like Osamu.
The first person that sees Atsumu being obnoxious and not shaming him, because he is just as much of an asshole.
Atsumu didn’t mean to fall in love with the man behind the mask.
But this time, he was lucky.
This time, the man behind the mask fell in love with him too.
