As a cat hybrid and a dog hybrid, Dongheon and Yeonho may not be entirely normal, but really, they’re not so different from any other couple.
Sure, they may look a little different from most people; Dongheon has a pair of velvety cat ears and a cat tail, dark and silky black, while Yeonho has dog ears and a big fluffy dog tail, chocolate brown and unbelievably soft. But really, besides their cute animal features, they’re just like any other two idiots in love.
And just like any other couple, they love each other with all their hearts, but there are certain things they do that drive each other crazy.
For Yeonho, it’s the purring. Dongheon’s loud, loud purring.
Truthfully, it’s adorable, and most of the time, Yeonho loves it, especially when they’re all curled up under a blanket together in front of the fireplace on a cold night and Dongheon’s got his face buried in Yeonho’s neck and his hands all over him, or immediately after sex, when they’re flushed and bathing in the afterglow and Dongheon won’t stop nuzzling Yeonho’s skin and showering him with lazy kisses.
But sometimes, it gets to be a little too much, particularly when Yeonho is trying to sleep, like tonight, and Dongheon is spooning him, his strong arms wrapped tight around Yeonho’s waist and one leg thrown over Yeonho’s thighs, Dongheon purring loud and nonstop right in Yeonho’s ear, the vibrations from Dongheon’s chest like a motor where he’s pressed right against Yeonho’s back.
And well, it’s not just the purring. Dongheon scratches too, he scratches a lot. The bright red slashes all up and down Yeonho’s back, as well as the marks dug into Yeonho’s chest and thighs, can all attest to Dongheon’s rather...enthusiastic love, and even now, Dongheon is digging his nails possessively into Yeonho’s belly as he sleeps.
There’s also Dongheon’s mood swings. One minute, he’s lazy and wants to stay in bed all day and do nothing, and the next, he’s grumpy and impatient, and moments later, he’s hyperactive and needy, whining and crying when Yeonho is busy cooking or doing something else that doesn’t involve giving Dongheon his complete and undivided attention at every single moment.
Yes, Dongheon is a handful, and really, there’s no one but Yeonho who can handle him.
It’s raining outside, a steady, heavy pattering against the window, but Yeonho can barely hear it over the purring that seems to be getting even louder as Dongheon hugs him tighter, and Yeonho sighs, thinks for a single moment about waking Dongheon to tell him to quiet down, but Yeonho knows full well that, like always, he just can’t do it. He won’t be able to bear the sad look in Dongheon’s eyes, and so he’ll just have to try his best to fall asleep like this, loud, loud purring and all.
A few more minutes pass, Yeonho trying to clear his mind and to let the purring blend into the background, to focus instead on the wonderful warmth of Dongheon’s body and how perfectly the two of them fit together, to fall into the music of Dongheon’s purring mixed with his own heartbeat until it becomes a soothing rhythm, and Yeonho’s almost got it, he’s right on the verge of drifting off, when suddenly, there’s a bright flicker of lightning followed by a loud crash of thunder outside, and the nails dug into Yeonho’s belly squeeze hard in reflex and cause Yeonho to yelp as Dongheon awakens in fear.
A few moments of silence pass, and then, there’s another blinding flash of lightning and another crackle of thunder, violently loud like gunshots, and Dongheon whines, burying his face in Yeonho’s back, right between his shoulder blades, wrapping his muscular arms so tight around Yeonho that Yeonho can barely breathe.
Yeonho sighs again, his heart clenching, because the purring has stopped, and all he can hear now are the soft, scared cries into his skin as Dongheon trembles around him.
And so, as the terrible storm continues outside, Yeonho rolls over carefully, Dongheon withdrawing his arms and the two of them adjusting in the dark until they’re facing each other, and Yeonho wraps his arms around Dongheon’s shoulders, pulling him in until he’s curling up right against Yeonho’s chest, and Yeonho threads a hand through Dongheon’s hair, murmuring soft words of comfort as he rubs gently at the back of Dongheon’s head and over the back of his shoulders.
Dongheon’s arms are tight around Yeonho’s waist again, and he flinches and squeezes tighter with every strike of lightning and boom of thunder, and Yeonho takes care of him, rubbing behind Dongheon’s cat ears and over his back, Yeonho’s voice deep and smooth and full of affection.
And as the storm gradually quiets, the purring starts again, Dongheon nuzzling his face in Yeonho’s chest and letting out soft, sweet sounds of contentment that make Yeonho smile and pull Dongheon in closer, because while Dongheon is very much half cat, purring and scratching and mood swings and all, Yeonho is very much half dog, loyal, accepting, and more than anything else, he’s Dongheon’s companion through everything.
Yeonho loves Dongheon unconditionally, and he’ll always protect him.
