Work Text:
Soft whispers of the wind lulled Mikasa to sleep. Three years had passed, and things were never the same. Except for one— or two rather.
Her feelings for a certain someone, and the remnant of a place they once called home.
Seated under the shade of the elder tree, she held the scarf loosely wrapped around her neck. It was well taken care of although the red has faded quite a bit.
The scent was different from way back, but for Mikasa, it still smelled like home.
A peaceful afternoon. Finally.
Without a care in the world, without the lingering fear of sudden attacks, without bloodshed. It was something she longed for. It was the closest to having a normal life once again.
“That position looks so uncomfortable.”
Because he’s here.
“Eren, you’re here.” Mikasa fluttered her eyes opened and smiled softly at the boy in front of her.
Eren held his breath, fazed by the beauty that sits right in front of him. Mikasa was truly astonishing. He gently moved Mikasa and sat behind her, positioning her in front. He subtly hugged her after making sure Mikasa was comfortable laying on his shoulders.
“Is this comfortable enough?” Eren asked shyly and Mikasa nodded, closing her eyes.
Minutes passed and they remained like that. Eren’s legs started to feel numb but he didn’t want to disrupt Mikasa’s calm.
“Eren,” Mikasa called and Eren hummed. She sat straightly and faced Eren, her chin resting on her knees as Eren was keeping her in the comfort between his space. “Armin told me.”
“What did he tell— Oh,” Eren realized. “Oh no no no no no! Why did—“
“It’s okay he just slipped,” Mikasa giggled, “So you didn’t want me to be with other guys huh? You want ‘her to only have feelings for me.’”
Eren’s mouth gaped. His face was flushed with hints of pink all over, and so he faced away from Mikasa. Utterly speechless. “That traitor,” Eren muttered under his breath and Mikasa laughed.
“But Eren...” Mikasa’s voice was soft and alluring that Eren couldn’t help but turn his head back to her again, “I’m so glad you’re here. Alive.”
Eren noticed the scarf hanging loosely from Mikasa’s neck. Memories came flooding back to him. The day he first wrapped the scarf on her and the day he promised to wrap it forever.
He eyed it and grabbed the red cloth, remembering the nostalgic feeling from way before. The warmth he had given Mikasa was something he didn’t realize up until now. But the comfort Mikasa gave him, was always been felt by his heart.
“Mikasa, I’m sorry,” Eren’s voice quivered and whispered, “for everything.”
“Eren it’s okay. I understand,” and that was something Eren never knew he needed to hear. Moreover, from Mikasa.
Eren cupped Mikasa’s cheeks and leaned towards her. Their eyes are filled with longing but are home for each other.
“Mikasa, I lived for you. I am living with you.”
As swift as the bird swooping on the sky, their lips met in an instant. Eren holding the back of Mikasa’s head gently, and Mikasa’s hand gripping Eren’s collar. A kiss shared after a lifetime of despair. Chaste as pure as their love for each other. The golden warmth after a darkened cold from yesterday.
Eren held the scarf once again and started to wrap it around Mikasa again. The tail end of the scarf draped on Mikasa’s head. Just like...
“Just like the first time...” Mikasa smiled.
Eren stared at Mikasa with the purest love he has for her.
“And the last time I promised.”
