Work Text:
The first thing George sees when he wakes up is a place he recognizes almost immediately. Sapnap’s house. Once he sits up in bed he remembers
“It happened again.”
“I can’t believe I let it happen again”
He remembers waking up next to Dream some mornings when they had agreed to sleep in, he remembers the way the sun would hit his face and his eyes would practically glow. All mine, he used to think, he’s all to me. It’s only now that he realizes how wrong he was, how naive he is.
Every time Dream went back to him George was left alone to mull over every conversation they had, every word he said, wondering if he had done something wrong to push Dream away.
George thinks of the first time it happened most. He found out because of a receipt that fell out of Dream’s pocket, a dinner at a nice restaurant downtown with a meal for two. He instantly recognized it because it was a restaurant he’s been wanting to go to with Dream for a while now. After the initial freak out he collected his composure and decided to confront Dream about it. He convinced himself there had to be a good reason, there was no way he would hurt him on purpose, right?
Dream had given him a look of regret, panic, and what looked like hurt? He immediately reassured George that it was a one-time thing and it meant nothing. He still loved George, he loved him, right?
Since then, something has always felt off. Their relationship felt like a dance. He was so desperately trying to dance with Dream, but he always seemed to be in his bubble, dancing to a completely different song. He always felt so close to Dream, but like he was being held at an arm’s length the entire time.
Then what he thought was the best night of his life happened. He and Dream had gone stargazing. They had talked and laughed the entire time. He turned around to get the food they had brought and when he turned back to face Dream he was on one knee, with a ring.
George gasped, tears already threatening to spill from his eyes. Dream told him how much he loved him, how he wanted to be with him for the rest of his life. How did he let himself believe all those lies?
Of course, George had said yes and spent the next few days with the biggest smile plastered on his face. They decided to spend the night looking at each other with so much love in their eyes, and just talked the whole night.
There had been a few incidents that George figured he didn’t need to confront Dream about it. He would come home clearly having had a little to drink, his hair would be all messed up and he didn’t care. He would still stay with George every night, that’s one thing he always kept his promise on.
Whenever this kind of thing would happen he would call Sapnap, every time he told him to leave Dream. He doesn’t know what he was looking for, maybe some reassurance that he should stay? Because no matter what happened the day before he would wake up in Dream’s arms. He looked at him with the most loving eyes that convinced him to stay despite everything.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What happened? Where did he go wrong?
He thought that he and Dream were meant to be together, soulmates if you will. So then why did he keep going back to him? What did he have that George didn’t? He had thought for sure Dream loved him back.
One day while Dream was out he checked the mail to see a medium-sized box. It had Dream’s name on it, but George had been waiting for a package to arrive and figured he might have just ordered from the wrong account.
He got to the kitchen counter to open it and his heart dropped. It was over 100 save the dates. For Dream and Fundy. His breath reduced to a small shaking, his hands almost trembling as he picked one of them up. How had this happened? How did George not know? How did he not realize his fiancee was going to marry someone else? He turned it over to see a picture of Dream and Fundy together.
His next thought was he had to leave. Now. He packed a duffel bag and backpack to hold his more important stuff, like his favorite clothes, his setup for work, his wallet, etc. he could come back for the rest later.
He got into his car and just started driving. He needed to get somewhere, anywhere other than their house. If he faced him he would just start crying, and Dream would try comforting him, wrapping him in one of his addicting hugs and placing his chin on George’s head and-. George has to cut off the thought there. He can’t go back, not after that.
He does the best thing he can think of at the moment, calls Sapnap. He picks up almost immediately. “Hey, George! What did you need?” and (italics) fuck George feels bad. He sounds so happy, he doesn’t want to ruin that, but he doesn’t have a choice anymore. “Sapnap,” his voice is slightly trembling “I messed up, fuck I messed up”. He can practically hear Sapnap’s face fall “George? What happened? Are you ok?”. He avoids the question “Is it ok if I come over?”. “Of course, I’ll see you then?” “yeah”. And he hangs up.
When he rings the doorbell, Sapnap answers the door almost immediately, enveloping him in a tight hug. It makes George feel safe, and he thinks he’ll start crying any second now.
They make their way inside and George sits on the couch, looking defeated. Sapnap offers him some hot cocoa and sits down next to him “Do you wanna talk about it?”. He owes it to Sapnap, he should tell him. “Yknow” he gives a sort of bitter chuckle, “I thought he loved me, I really did”. The other’s gaze softens and he pulls him into a hug, resting his head on George’s shoulder. “He’s been with someone else for who knows how long, I just found the unsent save the dates in the mail.” tears started to pool in his eyes before he could continue “My fiancee is getting married to someone else”. They stayed in that hug for who knows how long. “I’m so sorry, but can I stay with you for a bit?” “Of course, you’re always welcome here”.
Dream’s pov
He knows he’s made a mistake, he doesn’t love Fundy, he never has. George is the reason he gets up in the morning, the reason he’s still around. George is the one he always looks forward to seeing. He was stupid for thinking he loved Fundy.
He had just cut off the relationship between him and Fundy for good, and he was on his way home to see George. When he got home he realized George’s car was gone. Going inside he saw a good chunk of George’s stuff missing.
Making his way into the kitchen his eyes widen as he sees the box full of save the dates. “Hey, do you mind if I send the save the dates to your house? The mailman gets my address mixed up sometimes and I don’t wanna order these again” He had agreed before thinking. He’s realizing he does a lot without thinking.
He calls George and somehow gets an answer, but before he can say anything George asks “How long?”.
“George-” he gets interrupted “Don’t give me that, don’t act all innocent, you’re the one who decided to cheat and lead me on, and worst of all act like you loved me” he hears a dry chuckle “and I actually believed it”.
“George please I do love you” “You don’t, you should just be with him, I can’t compete” he pauses “You’ve made up your mind, I don’t need more signs”.
“Please can we talk about this?” “Goodbye dream” he hears the call end but it doesn’t register.
“fuck” he repeats “fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck FUCK” he yells
He’s alone now, and there’s nobody to blame but himself.
He’s just left dancing alone in the dark.
