Work Text:

Dorcas sat in front of Marlene’s grave, it had been a month since her death but it still stung like salt in a wound. “I miss you.” She whispered gently, letting a tear slip down her cheek, “I just want you back. This whole war is stupid, we should be living our lives like normal people, having fun adopting animals, having children without the threat of them being hurt-” She was cut off by her tears, they were falling from her eyes making her vision blurry.

“Your right, we should be living our lives, but you can’t when part of you is shattered.” Someone said behind her, it was Alice, “You should sleep, cry, whatever you need to do. Talk, don’t talk, just hold on. For her, for Marlene.”

“She said she was going to check on her parents because she was worried that they were hurt.” Dorcas managed to get out between her tears, “Then she never came back. I found out from the paper. I loved her Alice, for so long before we even went on a date. So long and I wasted that time being scared she would turn me down.”

Alice sat down next to her pulling her into a hug, “You should get some rest. Would you like to sleep in my guest room?”

“No, I’m going to go home.” Dorcas said, giving a weak smile before apperating away.

A few days later Dorcas stood back to a wall, wand out, waiting for the death eaters to try and raid the house she and a few other order members were in.

“Dorcas, meet me around back, I’ll follow behind you.” Someone called, amidst the noise of people calling to each other and others casting protection charms she couldn’t tell who.

“Okay, let’s go.” She held her wand in front of her ready to use whatever spell needed to protect herself. She muttered an unlocking charm before opening the back door to the house. As soon as the door had opened her eyes met with a few familiar pairs.

“Oh look! Meadowes decided that she wanted to play a little game!” Barty Crouch Jr. taunted.

“I’m sure she would love to join us or she’ll end up with her helpless excuse of a girlfriend.” Evan Rosier spat.

Dorcas took a breath, “Never in a million years will I join you and your pathetic friends.”

“You sure about that?” A new voice spoke, Bellatrix, “I think that it would be in your best interest to join us. Get back at Dumbledore for not protecting McKinnon.”

It wasn’t anyone’s fault but theirs. No one knew she would be there, a voice whispered. She opened her mouth to speak but before she could the rest of the group joined her.

A fight broke out, hexes and curses were flying back and forth between members. Dorcas shot a tripping jinx at a death eater who was getting ready to hex Emmeline. She couldn’t tell who was winning just that a few death eaters had disappeared. She continued using spells to defend herself against the death eaters before a voice rang out above all of the noises.

Bellatrix had inflicted a few small cuts on Dorcas’ cheek and was starting to say the words to the killing curse when an unknown voice spoke, “Leave her Bella. Let me have her.” Dorcas was confused and didn’t know what that meant

“Who are you?” She spoke into the air, she couldn’t see who had been talking.

The voice spoke again, “Quiet and turn around.” Dorcas did as she was told fearing what would come if she didn’t

“Very good. Look me in the eyes when I speak to you.” Dorcas lifted her gaze and made eye contact with a pair of brown eyes. They weren’t a warm sort of brown, they looked like someone had gone over them with an icy grey. “Do you know who I am?” When Dorcas didn’t respond she felt a wand make contact with her neck. “Answer me when I speak to you.”

Dorcas swallowed and tried to breathe properly, “No.”

Whoever it was let out a chuckle, “You’ve been fighting this war against someone you don’t even know? I am Lord Voldemort. I will tell you one final time. Join us.”

Dorcas summoned all of the courage she had left. She couldn’t join, that’s not what she wanted to do, they had killed Marlene, something she would never forgive them for. “No. I will not be joining you.”

“Very well.” Voldemort raised his wand, “Avada Kedavra.” A green light shot out of the tip of the wand.

It’ll be okay, I can see her again. The voice inside her head whispered gently. The last thing she saw before the world went cold was a sunflower, her own favorite flower growing next to a rose, Marlene’s favorite.

“Dorcas!” A familiar voice whispered, “Is that really you?” Dorcas felt something warm wash over her. This couldn’t be possible, she can’t be alive. She had just been hit with the killing curse.

Dorcas opened her eyes hoping that it had all just been a nightmare. When they opened she saw Marlene. Was it a nightmare or are you hallucianting? “Marlene?” Dorcas asked, turning her head and looking around, “Where am I?”

Marlene pulled Dorcas into a hug, “Welcome to the afterlife, I guess that’s what you’d call it.”

“But what about everyone? Mary, Alice, Benjy-” Dorcas was quieted by Marlene.

“It’ll be okay, they’ll join us eventually. Hopefully not for a long time.”

Dorcas rested her head on Marlene’s shoulder, “Yeah, hopefully not for a long time. Who else is here?”

Marlene threw a smile at Dorcas, “Fabian, Gideon, The rest of my family, James’ parents, oh and I met Dumbledore’s sister! I didn’t even know he had a sister.”

“I missed you.”

“Yeah I missed you too.”
