Work Text:

“Hey, sweetheart. What’s up?” Steve answered cheerfully.

“Date night’s ruined,” Tony replied with an edge of petulance to his voice.

“Okay, I know I’m not exactly the best at planning date night, but give me a chance here.”

Tony groaned. “No, it’s not you. Dee called. She’s sick and can’t watch Pete tonight. I asked everyone I could think of and everyone’s booked solid.”

“Oh shit. Hope she’s okay.” Steve hoped his disappointment hadn’t been too apparent. He’d been looking forward to his night out with his husband all week. “Let me see if I can come up with something, okay?”

“Sure. I’ll see you tonight.”

“Love you, babe.”

Steve let out a frustrated groan when they’d hung up. He considered what they had planned, and decided they still all deserved a night out. He canceled the dinner reservation – Peter was still too little for fancier restaurants – and then remembered his best friend mentioning a night out he’d recently gone on.

This can still be fun, Steve though as he pulled up the website and bought tickets for a Disney double-feature at the nearby drive-in.

“Remember bud, we stay in the car, okay?” Steve reminded Peter as he unbuckled him from his car seat and walked to the trunk of their SUV.

“I stay with Papa and Dada,” Peter replied solemnly, clutching his favourite plushy tightly against his chest.

“Gotta say, this was a pretty good idea,” Tony smiled at him as Steve reached the trunk. He made a kissy face at his husband, but before Steve could close the gap between them, Peter had already lunged out of Steve’s arms and was kissing his dad.

“You grab him, and I’ll organize this?” Steve offered, Peter’s legs the only thing he was holding onto anymore.

Tony grabbed the rest of the toddler and pulled up the drive-in’s online ordering system to get them popcorn and snacks for the night, while Steve hauled himself in the trunk and moved the piles of pillows and blankets until they formed a cozy little nest for them to snuggle in and watch their movies.

Steve grabbed Peter so Tony could join him in the comfortable pile that filled the trunk. Steve propped himself in a corner, Peter on his lap, and read books while they waited for the movie to start and ate popcorn and hot dogs.

Peter was quiet during the first movie, Finding Nemo – one of his favourites. About half-way through the second film - - Steve noticed Peter feel heavier in his arms, and moments later, he heard soft snores coming from their son. He shifted Peter to his other side and motioned for Tony to snuggle in closer.

“Sorry we didn’t get to go on our nice fancy date,” Steve whispered to Tony when he was all settled in Steve’s side, a big fluffy blanket draped across all three of them. “I’ll make it up to you, promise.”

“Yeah. I love spending time alone, but this is nice too,” Tony answered back just as quietly. “I still haven’t gotten my kiss though.”

“Oh, we can’t have that. Come ‘ere.” Steve smiled into the first press of their lips, happiness flooding through him. He relaxed into a second and third kisses, and stole one last peck before Tony pulled back.

“Wanna get out of here? I’m sure we can finish date night at home,” Tony offered with a suggestive raise of his brow.

“No, the movie’s not done. I wanna see if Lightning wins the Piston Cup.” Steve answered seriously, grabbing another handful of popcorn.

“You’re kidding me right now?” Tony retorted.

“Shush you.” Steve tried to feed Tony some of his popcorn so he’d stop talking but it only made both succumb to a fit of giggles.

“Papa, stop,” Peter whined groggily, trying to turn in Steve’s grip. He started fussing and fidgeting after that, and Steve knew it was time to head out – like many of the other cars around them were doing.

“Fine, lets go finish date night at home,” Steve told Tony before stealing one last kiss. “We’re going to have to watch this tomorrow though.”

Tony smiled at his husband as he gathered the leftover food while Steve started scooting out of the trunk with Peter.

“It’s a date.”
