One light was always on no matter what. It had to be. How would we stay safe without it?
No matter where we went, we took lanterns and candles and flashlights with us. Even at night, we kept a light on. The person on watch had to see, of course.
We travelled further and further from our home, heading for civilization. At least, where we thought civilization would be. The world had ended and we had no clue where to go. There were no city lights to draw us in from the highways anymore. Only our lights kept us safe.
We passed abandoned cars and rubble on the side of the road. Sometimes we could scavenge things, but supplies were few and far between. We had to switch to fire lanterns as we walked down the endless road.
Danger nipped at our heels. Darkness ate up everything behind us, no matter how much light we had. Our group was too small. We could only keep moving.
But, even if we found a community, some of us doubted the combined light would be enough to keep the dark out.
We kept moving forward. It was all we could do. That and keep a light on.
It was our only hope.
