Work Text:
Nanami could no longer feel the left side of his body, nor did he feel the need to wield his machete around anymore. his nose could barely pick up the putrid odor of charred flesh, and he could no longer feel most of the muscles on his face. It was somewhat odd to himself that he was still breathing, although rather erratically, while aimlessly trekking further into the train station. Regardless of it all, he kept expending the last of his energy, towards a fight he wouldn't live to see the end of.
Despite the feeling that his body had admitted defeat, he remained adamant in reaching his final destination, wherever it may be — he held his chin up high and held a stable posture, just so he could feel less bitter about the inevitable fate that would soon reach him. He proceeded to recklessly swing his weapon around, tearing through the hordes of curses that came charging at him from every corner. After this, he surmised, would he find himself face-to-face with the one that would surely end his life.
At the moment he made quick work of the last few curses, the sensation of a cold hand against his chest confirmed his suspicions.
"So this is what a person's final moments feel like," the jujutsu sorcerer thought to himself as he stopped; allowing for a slow intake of breath to enter his lungs as he closed his remaining eye for a brief moment. The fine lines between reality and imagination began to blur together, and he found himself in a state of tranquility.
In closing his eyes, Nanami thought it was already over. yet, he could begin to feel the odd sensation of sand under his bare feet, along with a gentle breeze that could only be felt at the beachside. The unmistakable scent of the ocean was what got him to open his eyes, and the man could see the scenery of Kuantan before him.
(Looking around, he eventually laid eyes upon a small house in the distance that looked as if it were newly built, and he couldn't help but smile at knowing that his own hands would've done that, had he taken a different route with his life.)
Opposed to the ringing static that haunted him moments before, he could only hear the sounds of laughter and joy — the smiling faces of colleagues living and deceased alike filled his heart with a warmth he'd yearned for all these years.
The sorcerer heard them, saw them beckon for him, and for a moment, he wanted to reach for them and allow the foreign emotions in his heart to bloom forth. Yet, he ultimately cast aside his own feelings to close his eyes once more. the names, faces and voices of everyone he knew up to this point echoed in his head, but one voice in particular rang the loudest of them all.
"Nanamin!!"
With the last of his strength, Nanami opened his lone eye and looked over at the boy he was told to watch over, unknowingly smiling with a tenderness he would never be able to feel again. It was a bittersweet moment for the two of them — well, mostly for himself — as he opened his mouth to speak for what would be the last time.
"Itadori Yuuji..." he chuckled gently. "You've got it from here."
It never occured to Nanami how he would never be able to feel the smile on his own face, nor would he experience the feeling of returning to someone who loved him back. There was no room for him to lead a luxurious lifestyle, filled with long-lasting relationships and happiness. Indeed, life was short, but he knew from the very beginning that his profession would never allow him to live a life that non-sorcerers deemed "normal".
"After all these years of working, I finally get a vacation..."
(But thinking back, even a single vacation would've been enough to satisfy him.)
The thought of being liberated from the world was the last thing that crossed his mind, leaving the boy's anguished cries to fall on deaf ears as he felt the fibers of his upper body rip apart at an inhuman speed, the sound akin to silk cloth being ripped apart. He was almost grateful that he couldn't feel or hear anything in his final moments.
"...I'm sorry, Itadori. Gojou. Everyone. I don't think i'll be returning from this vacation anytime soon."
