Work Text:
My life will never be the same
'Cause girl you came and changed
The way I walk
The way I talk
I cannot explain
The first time it happened Bucky thought it was a joke. A prank even. Sunday morning, the sun was peaking from between the leaves of the trees next to Bucky's window. Birds started to gently chirp and rustle. Cars here and there started to hum down the street in gentle traffic. A quiet morning disrupted by the loud music and the grating sound of a vacuum banging into every surface of the apartment.
Faintly, Bucky could hear Sam, his roommate, singing to the song as the vacuum started to get closer. And louder. Bucky opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling in confusion. He turned his head to the digital clock on the bedside table. Seven am.
At that moment Sam bursts through the door, vacuum in tow and loud music blaring from outside his room. "You rocked my world you know you did- come on Bucky wake up it's cleaning day!" Sam says as he sings along disrupting the silence of Bucky's sanctuary.
"It's seven am on a Sunday, Sam." Bucky moans out as he shields his face with a stray pillow from his bed.
The pillow was quickly snatched from his grasped and tossed to an unknown location in his room. Sam's demeanor shifts as the song changes visibly getting more excited.
"Ooh this my song! Hold up you don't know nothing about this!" Sam laughs out as he starts dancing with the vacuum out of the room.
Bucky lays in his bed for a few minutes, all hopes of sleeping in that morning flown out the window. Bucky groans and practically crawls out his bed to head to the bathroom. When he exits the vacuum is long gone, promptly replaced with a can of lysol and a rag. Bucky walks towards Sam who immediately gives him a duster. Music still blaring from a bluetooth speaker sitting on the kitchen counter. Bucky doesn't bother arguing, he lazily starts to dust off various surfaces as Sam rubs down counter-tops and chairs.
After a little while Bucky hums to himself quietly, Sam hears but doesn't comment.
Do you remember
When we fell in love?
We were young and innocent then
Do you remember
How it all began?
It just seemed like heaven, so why did it end?
The second time it happens Bucky was pissed. Loud music once again blaring, the vacuum vacuuming, Sam singing. It was all particularly too much for Bucky's sensitive ears that morning. Sam once again bursts the door at seven am all a little too happy singing his heart out.
"Morning Bucky! Come on now you know the drill!" Sam says over the loud music. Oh loud, so loud.
Bucky springs out of bed and prowls over to the bluetooth speaker and shuts it off. Sam looks halfway to protesting before Bucky stops him. "No." That was all that was said before closing the door to his bedroom again and laying in bed with a pillow covering his head.
Five minutes roll by and Bucky's sensitivity starts to subside, the guilt starts to kick in. The apartment is silent, there is no hum of the morning, even the birds don't sing. Bucky starts to roll out of bed quietly walking out of the bedroom towards the bathroom. When he comes out and walks towards the kitchen again he sees the can of lysol and a rag laid on the counter waiting to be used as Sam dusts quietly. Bucky sighs silently and takes up the the rag and the can and starts to clean.
The third Sunday it doesn't happen. The speaker doesn't blare but hums out a quiet sound. Bucky wakes up to Sam quietly dusting and humming to himself.
"I hope I didn't wake you." It's quiet and sincere coming from his lips. Bucky shakes his head and cleans quietly right beside him.
Let this groove, get you to move,
It's alright, alright
Let this groove, set in your shoes,
Stand up, alright
The fourth Sunday Sam wakes up confused. Music blaring and vacuum humming. A sense of familiarity washes over him as he remembers the Sundays he would wake up to that were just like this. Bucky soon follows with the vacuum his hand.
"What are you doing man?" Sam chuckles as Bucky tries his best to dance to the song.
"I'm waking you up it's cleaning day!" Bucky says as he starts to pull Sam out of bed.
"Alright, alright." Sam lets himself be guided out of his bed and starts to walk himself to the bathroom.
When he comes out the vacuum is off and Bucky is dusting as he hums to himself. Sam smiles as he picks up the lysol and the rag and cleans as he sings. Minutes go by and Sam are laughing and cleaning together.
"Bucky come here I wanna teach you this dance." Sam says as the music starts to play.
Bucky laughs, "You know I can't dance, Sam." Bucky walks over to where he stands despite his words.
"Come on it's easy, all you gotta do is follow the song right- alright step to the left!" Sam chuckles as he instructs him. Bucky follows and laughs cleaning gone from his mind.
A tradition held on beautiful Sunday mornings like this one.
