Work Text:

Bakugou came down to the lounge area in the dorms around lunch time. Most of his classmates were hanging out on the sofas apart from Deku and a few others. He nodded to Kirishima and ignored Dunce Face as he headed towards the kitchen to make himself something to eat.

“Where’s Deku?” he heard Round Face ask and he rolled his eyes. “I thought he’d be awake by now.”

“Oh, he was up early,” Half n’ Half answered in his typical monotone voice. “But he had to leave and go home for today. Something about his dad.”

Bakugou froze where he stood, his blood going cold. “Say that again,” he muttered lowly through his teeth. When all he got back was confused silence, he slammed the fridge shut and turned around, marching over to the sofas. “Damn it, IcyHot. Say that again. What about Deku’s father?”

“Midoriya had to leave for a visit because his dad is home,” Todoroki answered, clearly confused and unaware of the situation. Damn it, weren’t Deku and IcyHot friends? Did that idiot not tell him?

“Shit,” he muttered and felt around in his pockets before remembering that he had left his phone upstairs in his dorm room.

“Bakugou, that language is not-“

“Shut the fuck up, Four Eyes! I need a phone!” he interrupted frantically. Everyone just stared at him like absolute morons. “Now!” Kirishima grabbed his phone and tossed it to him. Bakugou caught it and quickly dialed Deku’s number. Thankfully, he didn’t have to tell them to keep it down since they were silently watching him.

The ringing stopped and he barely heard the small “Hello?”

Curse his damn hearing. He put the phone on speaker so that he could hear better. “Deku? Why the hell are you so quiet, I can barely hear you,” he growled into the phone, his heart racing.

“…Oh hey, Kacchan. My dad is t-talking with my mom, so I can’t be too loud…” Deku answered in a shaky voice.

“What’s your dad doing home?”

“H-He saw the Sports Festival on TV, so he came by to see me.” Fuck. That fucking bastard.

Bakugou needed to ask if everything was okay but with his dad there… “So. Izuku. I was thinking we could play Heroes today. Get some training in, you know? But I haven’t been outside yet. What’s the weather like?” That got him some weird looks from the others, but he ignored them.

“…I think that I saw a few rain clouds…” Deku answered slowly and Bakugou’s heart nearly stopped in his chest.

“R-Rain clouds, huh? Maybe tomorrow then. Talk to you later. Tell Auntie Inko I said hello.” He hung up and tossed the phone back to Kiri. “Call Aizawa, tell him to meet me at Deku’s. With the police,” he ordered and grabbed his jacket.

“Wait, Bakugou, what’s going on?” Kirishima asked and the others quickly joined in with their own questions.

Bakugou growled angrily. “I don’t have time to explain everything! Deku’s in trouble. Just call Aizawa and tell him that Deku and his mother are in danger!” he shouted. “That fucking bastard,” he muttered to himself. He was almost to the door when someone grabbed his arm. It was Half n’ Half. And Kirishima was right behind him.”

“I have a car,” IcyHot told him, holding keys. “Iida’s calling Aizawa now. We’ll meet him there.”

“We?” Bakugou growled at him.

“He’s my friend.”

“And there’s no way that you’re going without me,” Kirishima added.

The three of them climbed into IcyHot’s car with Bakugou sharing the back seat with Kirishima. He tried to keep himself in control as Todoroki pulled out of the parking lot. “It’s a 20-minute drive. 15 if I hurry,” IcyHot commented and Bakugou had to suppress a growl, worried that it would take too long. “Explain.”

He sighed deeply. “Deku’s father had always been…tough. When we were four, and there were no signs that Deku had a quirk, it got worse. Much worse…” Bakugou muttered, clenching his fists. “Once it looked like he was quirkless…” He took a deep breath to try and calm himself.

“Quirkless? But he has a quirk,” Kirishima pointed out and Todoroki gave him an odd look. Fuck. They can’t know.

“H-He was a late bloomer. A very late bloomer,” he lied quickly, looking out the window. “Completely different from both of his parents and didn’t show up for years.”

“So, he’s one of the rare ones,” Kiri noted and Bakugou let out a breath, nodding. Good, they bought it.

“Anyway, it got worse. Kept showing up with bruises and burns…and whenever I was over there…my parents were never that loud. Deku’s father was pissed. Blamed Deku’s mom for him being quirkless and then he blamed Deku. Treated them both like shit…” Bakugou continued to explain. “He was always scared. Yet he still wanted to be a hero…guess it’s why I’d been so hard on him now that I think about it.”

“What do you mean?” Todoroki questioned, narrowing his eyes.

“…A quirkless hero…he’d get hurt. Putting himself at risk of the same pain that his father caused him daily. But he was all talk. He wouldn’t fight back, ever. Not against him. But he did with me. Always told me whatever was on his mind and argued back…At least he did. So, I…I pushed him around…argued and fought with him. Get him to fight back more. Instead, he fought back less…yet still talked about being a hero when he wouldn’t even fight back…” Bakugou growled, one hand popping with anger. “Fucking infuriating…he’s gotten better, but still.”

It was silent for a moment before IcyHot spoke up. “And his father?”

Bakugou ran a hand through his hair. “We were six. After another rough spell with his dad, he ended up in the hospital. The fucker left without a word and we hadn’t heard from him since.”

“Till now…”

“Fucking bastard saw the Sports Festival on TV. That’s how he found out that Deku has a quirk after all. Now he’s back…”

“And you’re sure it means they’re in danger?” IcyHot asked.

“Yes, I’m fucking sure! He said rain clouds!” That earned him a raised eyebrow. “It’s our code! Whenever things got bad with his father, we’d speak in code cause the fucker would listen in on phone calls and conversations. I’d ask if he wanted to play Heroes with me. It’s a game I made up where we’d pretend to fight villains together. I’d ask if the weather was nice enough for it. Clear day meant everything’s fine. Cloudy was scary but not too bad…”

“…And rain clouds?” Kirishima asked slowly. Bakugou closed his eyes and took a breath.

“Bakugou. What does rain clouds mean?” IcyHot pressed.

“Remember that I said the last time we saw him Deku had ended up in the hospital? He nearly died…that was rain clouds.” Todoroki stomped on the gas, speeding up dramatically.

Kirishima looked up from his phone as they pulled into the parking lot. “Aizawa is only a few minutes away. He’s bringing police and an ambulance. Just in case.” IcyHot parked the car. “Maybe we should-“

“We’re not waiting,” Bakugou growled as he jumped out of the car and started running upstairs. Todoroki and Kirishima both followed. The sound of a gun shot made him run faster. As soon as he reached the door, he held out his hand and blasted it open, running inside. The sight that met him made his blood run cold. Inko was crouched down on her knees, a dark bruise forming on her cheek. That bastard was standing over her with gun in his hands and Deku…Deku was on the floor, blood covering his abdomen.

“Well, well. Katsuki Bakugou. Long time, no see,” the fucking bastard taunted as he ran over and knelt down next to Deku. “You brought friends.” Bakugou held out his hand again when he saw the gun raise and he let out an explosion to stun him. He then pulled Deku into his arms as IcyHot ran in front of them and used his ice to shield them and Inko while Kirishima charged.

“Watch his mouth, he breathes fire!” Bakugou warned and pressed on Deku’s wound, causing a yelp of pain. “I know, I’m sorry. I have to slow the bleeding.” IcyHot tended to Inko as two more shots rang out. The bullets just bounced off Kirishima’s hardened body. The fight didn’t last long as Kiri tackled him and pinned the bastard to the floor.

“K-…Kacchan…you came…” Deku mumbled.

“Of course I did. You said rain clouds,” Bakugou answered gently.

“Izuku!” he heard and looked up to see Todoroki holding a shaking Inko. He gave her a small smile, trying to comfort her.

“It’s okay, Auntie. I’ve got him. And help is on the way,” he assured her.

Perfect timing, as Aizawa ran in with officers and paramedics. “Bakugou,” his teacher let out, kneeling next to him.

“Kirishima has the fucker. Deku was shot,” he mumbled with a shaky voice. The officers ran over to Kirishima while the medics joined Bakugou. Deku was pulled from his arms as his teacher held him.

“You did great, Bakugou. We’ll take it from here,” his teacher whispered.

The next few hours were a blur. Deku and Inko were both taken to the hospital and Deku’s father had been taken into custody. The only part that he remembered vividly was when they took Deku’s father away. The bastard had smiled at him. “Katsuki, all grown up. Once again, you had to ruin everything.” Bakugou didn’t respond. He just glared at him. Aizawa had mentioned bringing them back to the dorms, but they all insisted otherwise. Which brought them to the hospital. Waiting. After what felt like forever, a doctor came out to see them.

“For Inko Midoriya?”

Bakugou jumped to his feet. “Is she okay?”

The doctor nodded. “She’s banged up with a mild concussion, but beyond that, her injuries are mild. We’ll keep her for a day or two for observation, then she’ll be fine to return home.”

“Can I see her?” Bakugou immediately asked.

The doctor hesitated. “She needs rest and you’re not really family…but…five minutes. No more than that.” Bakugou agreed and ran to her hospital room with Aizawa, IcyHot, and Kirishima following behind.

As soon as he entered the room, he ran over to her. “Auntie Inko,” he sighed as she pulled him into a hug. “You okay?”

“Thanks to you,” she smiled gently. “Have you heard anything about Izuku?”

“He’s fine. He’s resting right now,” Bakugou lied. In truth, Deku was still in surgery but he didn’t want to worry her.

Her face evened out in relief. “Thank goodness. Thank you, Katsuki. For saving him again.” After another hug, they left her to get some rest.

“What did she mean again?” Kiri asked slowly.

“I told you Deku ended up in the hospital last time his father was here. I’m the one who called it in,” he explained slowly, ignoring how his teacher was watching him. “Damn nerd. Should’ve told me his father was back. I’m gonna kick his ass in training for this.” Kiri laughed gently and his teacher just sighed. IcyHot watched him quietly. Eventually, the doctor came to see them again. This time about Deku.

“I’m happy to report that Izuku Midoriya is out of surgery. The bullet was removed with no complications. Due to the meds and blood loss, he’ll be in and out of it for awhile but you’re free to see him. If anyone complains, just tell them that you have my permission.”

“Thank you so much, doctor,” his teacher bowed. They bowed as well before rushing to Deku’s room. Deku was pale and looked tiny in the hospital bed. He had a few bruises scattered across his skin. His chest was bare and wrapped in bandages. Bakugou took the seat closest to the bed and grabbed his hand. IcyHot sat on the other side of the bed and took Deku’s other hand. Aizawa took the seat in the corner and Kiri sat right next to Bakugou.

“Stupid fucking Deku,” he muttered. IcyHot was still watching him, and it was starting to piss him off. “What the fuck are you staring at?”

“You really do care about Midoriya, don’t you?”

“Of course I care, you fucking moron,” Bakugou growled.
