wait for me in the morning

Work Text:

Mornings find a place in Chuuya’s heart.

They’re serenity, a safe haven, a quiet time where the world has yet to wake and the sun has not yet dawned over the horizon. They’re darkness in a heavy collision with light, where nothing is exactly black or white, but middle ground of greyscale and faded blues and golds.

Mornings are silence, the calm before the noisy storm, and though they don’t last too long, Chuuya savors them nonetheless.

He wakes up on a regular Sunday morning. It’s one that’s not particularly out of the ordinary — just a day in his normal week — sans the part where he finally, finally has a day off from work.

A day all to himself, he muses idly, letting his lashes flutter between wake and unconsciousness. He’s got the whole day to himself, what could he do—

“Mm...C-Chibi…” An arm drapes around his waist, followed by a face tucking into his back, and Chuuya huffs a fond sigh.

Not so much a day to himself after all, huh?

He twists around, careful to not shuffle the sheets that drape their bodies and finds himself staring at Dazai Osamu, peacefully asleep and currently cuddling Chuuya like he’s an overgrown teddy bear.

It’s warm in his arms. Since they were sixteen, Dazai’s arms had always been Chuuya’s favorite place to be. Dazai wasn’t overly strong (in terms of physical strength, that had always been Chuuya), but he offers a sense of belonging and comfort that makes Chuuya keep coming back.

Well that, and because, well—

He reaches up, brushing hair away from Dazai’s sleeping face.

Dazai is one of his favorite people in the world. No matter how much Chuuya denies it. That much had always been true.

As if reading his thoughts while asleep, Dazai tightens his arms around Chuuya’s waist, mumbling quiet incoherencies into his hair.

Chuuya catches wind of, “Chibi...Chuuya...crab” and he smiles, stifling a quiet laugh.

Dazai will always be Dazai, he supposes. And because Dazai is Dazai, if he doesn’t leave their shared bed soon, he’d be stuck here for hours.

Dazai has the tendency to sleep until noon, when the sun would be high over the world and the tranquility that Chuuya loves is long gone, and if he wakes any earlier, he’s but a shadow of his usual, energetic self. More prone to complaints and incessant whining, so on rare days where they both get to stay home, Chuuya slips out of bed quietly to do his morning routine and lets Dazai join him later on.

Which is what he should be doing now.

Chuuya drops his hands underneath the blanket to gently pry Dazai’s hands off of him and wrap them around a pillow.

“Almost there...aha!” he murmurs softly, beaming when Dazai rolls over with more mumbles. Chuuya shakes his head fondly and reaches over to press a kiss against the side of his head.

“Love you,” he whispers, despite knowing Dazai was fast asleep. “Be back soon.”

Chuuya rolls out of bed completely, grimacing as his toasty feet hit the cold, bare floor, and forces himself to get up and head to the kitchen.

He gets halfway across the room before he realizes he’s only in boxers, and does a full 360 spin, searching for the nearest object of clothing in the darkened room.

His hands find a familiar shirt and he slips it on, blinking at how the top hangs oversized, all the way to his thighs.

Oh. Not his shirt then.

A smirk curves across his lips as he clasps the buttons together. Dazai will be in for a treat when he wakes up, then.

He pads out of the bedroom and into the kitchen, humming to himself as he grabs a pan and kicks up the stove heat. Eggs are pulled into the counter, followed by a pack of sausages, bread that goes into the oven,  onions, and canned crab, and Chuuya throws his remaining ingredients into the pan.

“That’s when I wake up in the morning,” he sings softly, sifting the eggs and sausages in the pain. “That’s when after the sun is always storming…”

Chuuya prods the food again, watching as the sausages browned and the eggs turned a crispy golden-brown, and he’s so engrossed that he almost doesn’t notice when a pair of arms slip around his waist.

He blinks once, twice, staring at the mop of hair on his shoulder. “Osamu? What’re you doing awake?”

“Mmm…” His partner drawls out a low, exhausted groan that makes him giggle. “Couldn’t sleep without a chibi.”

Chuuya cranes his head to press a kiss onto the tip of his nose. “I’m making breakfast, dummy. Just pretend the pillow is me.”

Dazai makes a low, callous groan and presses his face further into Chuuya’s neck. “‘S not warm though. Chuuya’s warm and comfy and cute.”

They’ve been together for years now, and every time, Dazai’s constant stream of compliments makes a blush bloom across Chuuya’s face.

“Shut up and let me cook,” he grumbles, dumping out the eggs onto the plate. “So we can eat later, alright?”

Dazai nips the back of his neck and Chuuya doesn’t even need to look to see the sleepy pout on his partner’s face. The pout he very rarely resists, because dammit, he’s in love with Dazai and he can’t turn that face down.

“Nooooo, who needs to eat?” Dazai sneaks a kiss onto his cheek, and then dares another one to the lobe of his ear. “Just cuddles all morning.”

Chuuya laughs, twisting around to cup Dazai’s face. “You’re gonna be so-o whiny later though, if I don’t finish making our breakfast.”

“That’s a problem for me in the future. I want Chuuya to cuddle me now!” Dazai makes the puppy dog eyes and this time, Chuuya can’t get away.

He lasts for all of three seconds before sighing and turning off the stove. “You’re lucky I love you, mackerel,” he says half-sternly, rising on his toes to kiss his partner sweetly. “C’mon, let’s go back to bed, alright?”

“Okay~!” Dazai lets Chuuya lead him to their bedroom and back into their bed

The sheets were fresh enough that the remnant body warmth from Dazai hadn’t left entirely, and they crawl into bed with each other, yanking the blanket over their entwined bodies.

Dazai yawns and rests his head atop Chuuya’s. “Night, angel. See you in a few.”

Chuuya smiles at the nickname and kisses Dazai on the lips, before cuddling against his chest. “Night Osamu. Sleep well.”

There’s a muffled, “I will,” before snoring fills the room. Chuuya finds himself being lulled by the sound and he leans into Dazai, closing his eyes and letting sleep take over him once more.

(And true to word, Dazai does complain in the morning, but Chuuya wouldn’t have him any other way.)
