Chapter Text
Siyeon didn’t like the moon. It had been source of so many sufferings for her kind, fuelled by the ignorance and fear of those who live in a closeted world. Although, in their lack of knowledge they had managed to get something right: she was indeed a child of the ivory sphere, as were all werewolves.
It was said that in the Forgotten Times, during the early ages of the world when the Sun and Moon had just been created and were still full of life and magic, the Folks were born from their union. Some of them inherited the radiant energy of the burning star while the others took after the quiet presence of the calming moon. The First-Borns must have been quite a spectacle to behold back then. Those who had survived this far into the age of Men all told great tales of magic and wonders, cities hidden under the sea and secrets held deep into sacred woods. Nothing was left of those forgotten days.
During nights like these when the full moon shone bright in the starry sky, Siyeon liked to wander into the forest of steel and concrete that humans called a city. As much as she hated her own nature there was nothing she could do about her instincts. The moon called to her and she had to answer it. She liked to believe that by diving deep enough into the forgotten alley-ways of Shinjuku, even the pale orb would eventually forget about her and leave her alone under Tokyo’s nightscape.
In her perambulations through the famous night spots where the city’s youth liked to spend their evening away she ended up at a familiar crossroads. One linked to memories of loss and hope.

“What are you doing alone at this hour little one? It’s almost curfew. You might get arrested if you don’t come back to your family.”
The woman with orange hair was sitting on her heels to match the child’s height and looked at her with a kind smile. Seeing that the child stared back at her with nothing but fear in her eyes, the adult whispered to create a sense of complicity.
“You’re one of the Folks too, aren’t you?”
The two little eyes widened in surprise. Although still wary, her body language unconsciously drove her toward the woman.
“Do you have nowhere to go?”
The child shook her head. The adult’s smile faded, leaving its place to a sad knowing expression. The Folks always lived in communities. Even those who were known to be more independent, like vampires, had to rely on a clan of some kind. Children with no families were rare and could only mean one of two things: their family were dead or they had been abandoned by them. Both of these were absolutely devastating for the child.
“Do you want to come with me?”
The little girl’s face was giving two distinct answers all at once. Her eyes were saying she wanted to go with the pretty lady. Her pout indicated that she wasn’t too sure about following a stranger. Her uncertainty made the woman giggle.
“It’s okay, you can leave in the morning if you want.”
This statement was just a hollow promise until proven right, yet for the little one it was a solid evidence that the pretty lady was nice and could be trusted. Therefore, she followed her through the pedestrian streets lit by the neon ads of the bars and restaurants clashing against each other and bathing the street in a soft reddish light only contested by a few blue letters shining bright in the night.
***
Siyeon’s eyes were wandering in the sea of neon colours above her head when her gaze stopped on promising red letters. “Insomnia Bar”. How fitting. She pushed the door of the izakaya to escape the chilling breeze of late winter and made her way through the crowd of people cheering and talking loudly over the music being played in the background. She arrived at the counter filled with stools for lonely people like herself and ordered a beer.
The drink arrived soon enough but instead of sipping from the glass, the young woman just toyed with it, creating small waves inside. A storm to match her thoughts. Her mind drifted away, slowly. She was five years old when she was lost and found. Now she was nineteen and lost again, but this time there was no one to find her.
“Are you lost or are you just wandering?”
The voice of a woman startled her.
“What?”
“In your thoughts. Are you lost or just wandering?”
The young adult averted her gaze to the customer sitting next to her. She was so immersed in her thoughts that she had not sensed the other woman approaching. Upon seeing her, she admitted it would have been a shame to miss out on this view. A wide sincere smile stretching on a delicate face, lips matching the wine colour of her hair and small dark pupils lit with a warm spark.
“I was just reflecting. Did I seem lost?”
“Sometimes I like to think back to that sentence I read: ‘Not all those who wander are lost.’ You seemed to be wandering but I wondered if you were lost.”
The young wolf stared dumbfounded at this human oddity that was talking to her with such a calming voice. She had not realised that her lips had separated slightly in an “o” shape and she did not make any effort to push away the streaks of raven hair that had fallen in front of her brown eyes. The other giggled softly.
“Now, you seem lost.”
Siyeon blinked and shook her head to get a grip of herself. She brushed off the streaks of hair and started drinking to try to get her mind fixed on something concrete, because everything else about the situation looked surreal.
“Do you often do that?”, she asked to the strange woman.
“Do what?”
“Talking to strangers in bars using thoughtful quotes about life.”
“Ah!”, the red-haired girl laughed, “Not really, but you looked like you didn’t want to be alone so I gave it a try.”
A light gasp got caught in Siyeon’s throat. She looked like she didn’t want to be alone? No one had ever cared about that before. When people hooked up with her, usually it was because she was hot and looked vaguely mysterious. And when the girls looked good, Siyeon made the effort to forget that they were only interested in the fantasies they projected on her and played along for a night or two.
“Don’t I look enough like a lone wolf?”
“But even lone wolves are not meant to be alone. They’re just looking for a pack.”
“Are you looking for your pack too then?”, Siyeon deflected with what she thought was a witty comeback.
“Hum? Oh no, I’m not that greedy. One meaningful person can be enough.”
She peered into Siyeon’s eyes with that kind smile still illuminating her face and the raven-haired girl just froze. Was this real? How could she be so confident? She had pierced through her walls and she didn’t even know her name. Name. That’s what she was supposed to ask.
“Can I have your number?”
Close enough.
"Sure. Give me your phone, I'll write it down."
Siyeon’s clumsiness made the strange woman’s laugh even brighter. The white of her teeth were now completing the already pleasant picture of her smile. She wrote her number and gave the phone back to Siyeon who immediately looked at the screen to get the name. Kim Minji, with a little pink flower emoji next to it. “Cute”, the wolf thought, a vague smile stretching on her face. She quickly sent a text to give her number back. “Hi! I’m Lee Siyeon”, with a wolf emoji. Minji picked up her phone to look at it and giggled when she read the text. She averted her gaze back to the girl sitting next to her with a contented smile.
“Nice to meet you, Siyeon.”
***
Winter was coming to an end faster than Siyeon would have thought. She used to hate that part of the year when the days were shorter, because it meant that the moon was out more often to taunt her with her light. But recently she found herself enjoying her late evening hangouts. A lot of it had to do with Minji.
The two had been seeing each-other regularly through the month of February, always at the same time, when the last remnants of daylight dwell on earth for an extra minute before the night takes over them. Tasokare-doki, the moment of unexpected encounters.
Siyeon was waiting on a bench near the artificial canal dug next to the gravel path that travelled around the park, watching the amber light glimmering on the water. Soon there would only be the pink lining of the clouds against the night-blue sky. The moment would be lost. As her eyes were catching the last reflections of the lights, she heard a distant tinting sound. It wasn’t something from this side, it sounded from far, far away. Sounds from the Spirits World always meant something, Siyeon knew that from Han Dong, but she had never heard this one.
A plastic cup smelling like hot chocolate appeared jiggling in front of her eyes, waking her up from her thoughts.
“Tadaaa!”
The werewolf raised her head to find Minji bent over her with her beaming smile, a few centimetres away from her lips, causing her to blush.
“Sorry for being late, I got detained at the flower shop.”
“It’s okay, I got here early.”
Siyeon seized the cup and wrapped her hands around it to keep them warm while Minji moved around the bench to sit next to her with her very own cup filled with coffee.
“You remembered I prefer chocolate”, Siyeon said in a little voice.
“Of course I remembered. I care about what you say, you know.”
“Right”, the werewolf muttered to herself, still impressed by this basic attention.
The two wrapped themselves in a bubble of comfortable silence while drinking their hot drinks. Minji’s scent of lilac and roses mixed with the sweetness of the cacao beans left Siyeon in a state of sweet dizziness. She loved Minji’s fragrance. Especially because it wasn’t a fragrance, she could always tell the chemical scent of perfumes, but her natural body scent. It was sweet and refreshing and it was as simple as natural things can be but at the same time too complex to be found in nature in this form. A perfect harmony of paradoxes very akin to Minji herself.
As the night went darker the trees lit up with hundreds of little lights covering them and transforming the park into a magical forest. Minji looked at the thousand and one lights reflecting in Siyeon’s irises. The younger one’s amazement made the whole scene endearing.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
The werewolf broke out from her trance. “I had never seen these illuminations before.”
“It’s because you’re always having fun in Shinjuku and Roppongi,” Minji scolded her nicely.
“But isn’t it similar though? The lights of the city and the lights of these trees. All those gaudy colours shining bright into the night.”
“You’re right. The city is not that different from this forest at night. No matter the scenery, we are always lured by the artificial lights.”
“It’s because they are familiar and easy to understand. It’s just electricity making its way through the night.”
“You prefer the neon lights to the stars and moon?”
“I don’t like the moon. It’s always… ominous.”
“But there’s a rabbit living up there, it can’t be that scary!”
Siyeon laughed at the innocent, yet very logical argument. “Right. I’ll remember that next time I look at it.”
Another moment of silence passed between them. Siyeon felt like she didn’t want to move her eyes away from Minji’s. The older girl didn’t want her to look away either, but there was something else she wanted to do that night.
“Do you want to go see the other illuminations?”
“There are more?”
The raven-haired girl had said that with the naïve anticipation of a child which made Minji giggle softly. She stood up from the bench and offered her hand to Siyeon.
“Come.”
The younger girl took her hand and followed her through the path that the glimmering trees were drawing in the dark. Eventually, they arrived at a clearing where a few people were already gathered to enjoy the spectacle of light that was presented to them. It was like a sea of blue stars covering the floor. A fountain of shiny diamonds was in the middle and waves of white and red were spreading from it in circles above the sea of lights while flickering bubbles were suspended above.
Siyeon was hopping up and down and pointing at all the details to Minji who, no matter how insistent Siyeon was, couldn’t take her eyes off the raven-haired woman. So many things were reflecting into the red-head’s eyes as she took in every single detail of this magical night. The lights around them, the sparkles of wonder in Siyeon’s eyes, fulfilment, love. She hadn’t missed how the younger one looked at her sometimes when she thought she wasn’t paying attention to her. It was the same look she was giving her now that she had stopped pointing at the lights.
Minji hadn’t missed those moments, but Siyeon was realising for the first time how the red-haired woman looked at her. Her eyes were lost in surprise for a few seconds, making sense of the gaze Minji was sending her. But in reality there wasn’t much to make sense of. It was a beautiful night, she was accompanied by a beautiful girl and all the feelings that she had developed had been understood and were now being reciprocated in that one beautiful smile. The rest was simple. She leaned forward, closed her eyes and welcomed Minji’s lips against hers.
The kiss didn’t last long, only their lips touched and when they separated, Minji’s lilac scent stayed on Siyeon’s skin. Still dizzy, she smiled awkwardly as if this had been her first kiss. Not realizing fully what was happening, she got reminded of their surrounding when her acute hearing distinguished a few sentences out of the whispers. “Ew! Did they have to do that in public?”, “That was gross”, “Stop looking at them!”.
Siyeon had almost forgotten how it felt to be rejected simply for existing. Her own pack feared her existence and humans judged her for who she loved. No matter what she did, there was always something preventing her from fitting in. She felt two hands cupping her cheeks. Minji’s obsidian pupils were lit with a fire the intensity of which she had never seen on the red-head before.
“Don’t let them tell you who to love.”
The tinting rang again in the young woman’s ears. Minji was right. She couldn’t live her life according to what others said all the time. She leaned to kiss her again.
***
Spring had begun before Minji could see it coming. The flowers were blooming, the trees were green again, all those scents spread in the air and perfumed the streets with that fragrance so characteristic of Spring sunny days.
Siyeon was now in vacation, which meant that they could see each other more often until the beginning of her second college year in April. Their relationship was moving steadily and organically. Minji felt it was important to give Siyeon time and space to explore all the possibilities that being in love offered. Something told her that the younger woman had not been given that chance often in her life.
She figured the music student had to be strong because one does not achieve the confidence she shows in public naturally. It was a shell she had built around herself over time. Perhaps it was because of this that her love felt so pure, protected behind her walls, it had never been tainted.
At times Minji wondered if she deserved to receive such raw affection. It made her want to know more about Siyeon. How did she end up with so much love to give and so few people to give it to? The next dinner with Siyeon’s adoptive mother should answer those questions.
Minji was surprised too when the younger girl asked her if she wanted to meet her family.
“It’s just my adoptive mother though. I don’t have anyone else, but she’s important to me, and I want you to meet her.”
The red-haired woman couldn’t say no. Not when it meant so much for her girlfriend. So there she was, in front of Siyeon’s mother’s apartment. The raven-haired woman rang the bell to notify she was there and immediately opened the door.
“I’m home!”, Siyeon shouted as soon as she entered.
“Singnie, welcome home!”, a feminine voice answered from the end of the corridor.
The two newcomers left their shoes in the little storage cabinet near the entrance and followed the voice through the main corridor and to the living room where a woman with orange hair was busying herself in the open kitchen.
“Mom, this is Minji.”
“Nice to meet you Mrs. Han.”
Siyeon had told Minji in advance that Dong had managed to get legal custody over her when she was five but wasn’t legally her mother, so Siyeon had kept her biological parents’ family name. The woman in the kitchen raised her head at the sound of an unfamiliar voice in her home. She instantly adopted a politely cheerful tone to welcome her guest.
“Hello Minji, nice to meet you.” Her gaze moved from the task she was doing to greet the young woman more appropriately but as soon as her eyes rested on the red-head her lips separated in a contained surprise. “You’re a–”
“Yes, I’m the girlfriend”, the young woman interrupted with a smile.
“Right.” Dong closed her mouth and went back to her previous polite manners. “Siyeon talked a lot about you. But please take a sit and make yourself comfortable, I’m just finishing the last meals.”
She rummaged through the ingredients and utensils on the counter, seemingly looking for something.
“Actually, Singnie, I don’t have enough nori leaves for the maki rolls, can you go get some?”
“Really? But I’ve just arrived here”, the young woman pouted.
“Come on, we can’t make our guest go. Plus, the Konbini is right at the corner, it won’t take you long.”
“Fiiiine!” Siyeon said in an exaggerated manner before leaving the room.
Han Dong waited until the young wolf closed the main door to avert her gaze to Minji who had already understood where this was going. The woman who seemed to be in her forties changed to a younger appearance. Almost nothing was changed except for the pointy ears and the seven fox tails waggling behind her.
“Surely you won’t mind if I stop pretending to be a simple human in front of you.”
“Do as you please, this is your home after all.”
Dong was studying Minji, openly wary of her guest. The other was patiently waiting. Nothing could seem to disturb the vague smile that was painted on her face. Kitsunes were ones of the wisest among the Folks. Not only were their spiritual and magical abilities fundamentally superior, but the older they got the greater their powers grew. Minji could sense that Han Dong was particularly powerful. Eventually, the fox broke the tension.
“I always knew Siyeon’s life wasn’t going to be ordinary, but I hadn’t realised how much.”
Her opening statement was surprisingly peaceful. The young woman just kept being her usual self.
“She is indeed very special in more ways than one. I wasn’t expecting a wolf to live with a fox.”
“When are you going to tell her what you are?”
“I was planning to let her lead the pace and wait until she is ready to tell me what she is.”
“And what if she’s not quite what you expect?”
“I will never reject her and I think you’ve already sensed why.”
Han Dong huffed at the other’s confidence. “Children of the Sun are always so genuine.”
“And children of the Moon are always so melancholic.”
The fox’s smile was wider now. She liked Minji. She knew she could trust her. The red-head heard the distant tinting of a bell from the Spirit World.
“I think she’s coming back already.”
The other woman changed back to her older form and welcomed Siyeon with a cheerful smile when the young woman came back with the nori leaves and some additional treats.
The rest of the evening went well. The three of them ate the meal Han Dong had prepared while talking about Minji and how the two met. When dinner was over, the couple moved to Siyeon’s bedroom for the night and stayed until the next morning.
It wasn’t until later that month that Minji would fully realise what Han Dong had meant by “not exactly what she expected”.
Notes:
So, what do you guys think Minji is? Why is Siyeon different from other werewolves?
See you in the second part to find out! ;)
Here are some notes if you're interested:
curfew: In Tokyo, minors cannot be out between 11pm and 4am unless they are accompanied by a guardian/parent or are commuting to work/school or have another justifiable reason.
Izakaya: a Japanese bar and restaurant where people go to drink beers, sake and other types of alcohol with a variety of small dishes to eat alone or share with friends.
“Not all those who wander are lost”: is a famous line (at least for nerds like me) from the poem “The Riddle of Strider” in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, by J. R. R. Tolkien.
Tasokare-doki / kataware-doki (regional speech): The Twilight hour just before dark. Called Tasogare in modern Japanese, it comes from Ancient Japanese Tasokare (誰そ彼) which means literally “Who are you?”. It is known as the hour of the day when the border between the human world and the spiritual world is the less clear and therefore the time when you are most likely to make a supernatural encounter. (If you’re wondering where I picked that from, it is an important plot point of the movie Your Name / Kimi no Nawa by Shinkai Makoto)
The Moon Rabbit: A popular tale in East Asia based on the dark shapes that appear on the face of the moon and that resemble a rabbit.
Kitsune: they are powerful and wise fox spirits known for their shape-shifting abilities. According to the tradition their powers grow through time and they gain a new tail every century.
Chapter Text
“Siyeon? Are you all right?”
The werewolf slowly opened her eyes while the images of her dream were fading from her consciousness. She already couldn’t tell what it was about, but the lingering feeling of her heart being clenched told her it wasn’t pleasant.
Minji was looking worryingly at her, her messy hair was hanging above Siyeon, grazing her cheeks. The younger girl made an effort to smile.
“It’s okay it was just a bad dream. I already forgot what it was.”
“You were crying.”
The raven-haired woman brought her fingers to her cheek to feel the wetness of the tears that had dried there. That was weird, she hadn’t had a nightmare like that for a long time now. But then she guessed it still had to happen from time to time. The memories from her childhood were not so easily forgotten.
“I’m fine now, that’s all that matters.”
Minji pouted at the lack of concern Siyeon was showing. Unlike the werewolf, the red-head had been really worried. The younger one chuckled and put an arm around the older one’s waist to draw her closer and kissed her on the lips. Minji lost her pout and rested her head comfortably on Siyeon’s shoulder.
The younger girl stretched an arm to envelope her girlfriend's shoulders and stared at the ceiling for a few seconds, trying to get something out of her mind. Eventually she managed to formulate her thought.
“You know… if you ever feel alone, you’ll always have me right?”
Minji frowned at the unexpected remark, trying to understand where this was coming from.
“Thank you, that means a lot. But why are you saying that all of a sudden?”
“I don’t know, I just wanted to make sure you knew that.”
Her girlfriend rose her head and stared at her. Her brows slightly tilted in incomprehension and concern.
“Is it about your dream?”
“No… maybe. Listen, I just know that sometimes, even when you are surrounded by people you love, if one thing is missing you can’t help but feel alone and I just wanted to be sure you were not feeling like that. It’s silly, I know.”
The wolf turned her gaze away in embarrassment but Minji made her look at her by grazing her cheek with her fingertips.
“Siyeon, this isn’t silly. And if you’re feeling like that you know you’ll always have me too.”
“I’m not feeling like…” Siyeon met Minji’s scolding gaze, preventing her from keeping her lie. “All right, I think my dream had something to do with my parents and it made me sad. But you know it doesn’t help that you never talk about your family either. I’m genuinely worried about you too.” She tried to retaliate with a pout.
The red-head smiled sadly at the other’s inquiry. Siyeon had been very patient up until now, making sure to never cross a line and waiting until Minji would be ready to open up about herself. All of that was because she knew how some wounds can never truly heal, especially the ones made during childhood.
It would have been easy for the older girl to just tell the truth right there and then. But she had agreed with herself that she would let Siyeon be the first to reveal who she really was. So she half-lied.
“It’s because they’re not in Tokyo anymore. They left for a place far away from here.”
The way she had said it made it sound like they had died, but Siyeon couldn’t be too sure. Minji wasn’t the one to use metaphors when talking about serious matters.
“Did they abandon you?”
“No. I’m the one who chose to stay, I can’t put that on them. But it’s true that sometimes I felt lonely. I started to wonder if I had made the right choice, but I don’t think about that anymore.”
“How?”
“Because I have you.”
She bopped Siyeon’s nose with her finger making the other smile wholeheartedly with her eyes half closed in two semi-circles.
***
It was two hundred years ago. There were more trees back then, the city was smaller, everything was still kept at human size. Men hadn’t had the idea of reaching for the sky yet. Nonetheless, she and her sisters had sensed the wind of History coming their way. They knew their time was counted. Soon, the trees would be gone or imprisoned in concrete and wires. The city would grow and humans would stop caring about spirits of Nature. Their time had passed.
Her kind residing in the Tokyo area had gathered one last time at the foot of the mountains. They had decided to return to the earth where they would sleep forever while their souls would occupy the Spirit World with the firm intention of never coming back to the other side. But Minji didn’t want that. She had only acquired consciousness a hundred years from then, she wanted to experience more and she wasn’t afraid of the modern world. Nature always finds a way after all.
“Are you sure you want to stay here?”
“Yes, it’s going to be all right even if we’re not as many as we were before.”
“We’ll be waiting for you in the Spirit World whenever you decide to go.”
She didn’t know what it was back then, but something was calling Minji, urging her to stay. Only when she heard the distant ringing of the bells that one time when she was wandering under Tokyo’s neon lights did she understand why she had stayed so long.
***
“Say, do you believe in the supernatural?”
Minji put down the cup of coffee she was about to drink from and stared at Siyeon. There it was. The topic that she was waiting for but didn’t dare to bring up by herself. She looked at her girlfriend with a very serious gaze.
“Of course, there is no shame in admitting that some forces defy our understanding.”
The younger woman seemed taken aback by such a strong answer to her seemingly innocent question.
“And what would you say if – if I…”
“Siyeon, is that you?”
A tall young man, probably in his twenties, entered the café and immediately recognised the young woman sitting near the windows. At the sight of two heads turning to see the origin of the noise, he stopped in his track.
“Oh sorry, am I interrupting something?”
“No, don’t worry.”
“Yes”, Minji interrupted.
Siyeon was uncomfortable. It wasn’t just shyness that Minji saw in her body language. The werewolf felt threatened by the newcomer and that, the older girl couldn’t accept.
“Oh well, since I don’t know you I’m going to trust my dear friend on that one. Right Lee?”
The raven-haired girl’s gaze met Minji’s and she immediately understood that her girlfriend was not letting the young man have his way. So she decided to step up before the red-head could have a chance to snap at him.
“Actually Jinwoo, if it’s nothing important I’d rather have this moment with my girlfriend.”
“Seriously Lee? We both know this thing won’t last. Have you transformed in front of her yet?”
Siyeon rose from her chair and placed a hand on his mouth.
“Shut up, you idiot.”
The young man stayed dumbfounded for a second before realising what the werewolf was trying to say. He lifted the hand that was covering his mouth and whispered to the young woman.
“Oh so you’re trying it with ordinary people this time. Let’s hope this one won’t turn away like everyone else did.” He stepped back and said louder for Minji to hear. “Well in that case I’ll let you two have your moment. See you around Lee.”
Siyeon sat back at her chair. Her body was stiff and her gaze was running away from Minji who could barely contain her anger at Jinwoo’s audacity.
“I’m sorry about that”, the younger one blurted out, embarrassed.
“You have nothing to be sorry about. He was the jerk here”, Minji answered in a firm voice.
After that encounter, it was clear that Siyeon couldn’t bring herself to continue the conversation they were having. As she tried to bounce back with another light topic to change the mood, Minji decided to step up and derail from her original plan.
“The air is warm tonight. Do you want to go outside and enjoy the evening somewhere calm?”
Siyeon was surprised but, saw no reason not to comply. “Sure, where do you want to go?”
***
The distinctive scent of heat burning in the cold air of an evening in early Spring filled the werewolf’s nostrils as the couple sat on one of the benches of a forgotten square. She still had no idea why Minji had brought them here. She waited patiently for an explanation that came eventually.
“Siyeon, I know what you were trying to say earlier.”
“What?”
“About supernatural forces.”
“Oh.” Siyeon looked down embarrassed and wagged her hand to discard the topic. “No, that was just a silly thing, you don’t need to read too much into that.”
“I know”, Minji pursued, “because I’m part of that world too.” Two dumbfounded eyes stared at her in return. “I wanted you to be comfortable enough to talk about it, but that jerk ruined everything.”
“Minji, what are you talking about?”, Siyeon blurted in disbelief.
“You see that cherry-blossom tree in front of us?” The other one nodded. “It’s me. I’m one of the last dryads who chose to stay on this side.”
“No.” The younger one shook her head. “No, this can’t be happening.”
“What’s wrong?”
“We can’t be together, it’s too risky for you.”
“Because you’re a child of the Moon and I’m a child of the Sun? Come on Siyeon, those are just superstitions.”
“No, it’s not just that, it’s because I’m cursed.”
The emotional turmoil that was happening in Siyeon’s head was becoming too much to handle. She could hear the howling inside, the impulse to let it all out and free herself. The Moon was once again tempting her. Before Minji could try to calm her down, the young woman in front of her changed into a large wolf. But that wasn’t what surprised the dryad when the animal looked at her in fear. What surprised her was the colour of her fur.
“You’re a white wolf”, she whispered in amazement.
The young woman had only heard of them but she had never seen one. Mostly because the rare times a white wolf appeared, they were eliminated by their pack out of fear and superstition. But Siyeon was real and alive, standing in front of her with her ears flattened on her head.
“You’re beautiful…”
She extended a hand to pet the animal’s head but the young wolf retracted and just ran away without warning, leaving Minji alone and lost.
***
Han Dong had sensed Siyeon’s distress. Even if they were not related by blood, she had raised the cub as her own into the wolf that she was today and it had created another form of bound, the kind that can hardly be broken.
The fox followed the scent of the scared young adult into a dark alley of Tokyo’s suburb. She guessed the wolf had not realised how far she had gone until she was out of stamina. Siyeon’s ears perked up when she heard someone approaching her and instinctively growled at the not so stranger. Han Dong stopped in her track thinking back to the first time she had seen Siyeon like that.
“Siyeon, calm down!”
The fox was speaking in a low but firm voice so as not to scare the cub snarling at her. It had been a few weeks since she had taken her from the street and everything was going fine until the kid’s first tantrum that made her transform into a white wolf cub. Now she understood why the child had been abandoned.
White wolves were victims of many superstitions within the Folks. Some said they were too sensitive to the Moon’s power and couldn’t control their rage once they were transformed. They had been called “pack murderers” and “Moon fanatics”. Some even killed them as soon as they transformed for the first time. Siyeon was already a survivor.
“Siyeon, I promise everything is okay. I won’t hurt you.”
The cub was hidden under a desk, crouched against the wall, all teeth out, ready to bite Han Dong if she tried to approach her. “This is such a pain”, the orange-haired woman thought. She couldn’t care less about the superstitions. Her kind was above that. But the fact that Siyeon had reacted so violently as soon as she transformed confirmed her initial fear. Her pack had tried to kill her and she thought Han Dong was going to do the same. No matter how you looked at it, this situation was a dead end.
The woman sighed and sat on the floor with her legs crossed. Two pointy ears appeared on her head and seven fox tails grew behind her back.
“See? I can transform too, it’s not a big deal.”
Somehow seeing the kitsune’s partial transformation seemed to calm the cub. The fox spirit extended her arms, hoping Siyeon would trust her enough now that she had a better idea of what she was.
The wolf made a few step out of the desk. Seeing that the fox hadn’t moved, she kept forward until she was completely out and when she was sure the woman had no murdering intent she rushed in her arms and transformed back into a little girl. Handong wrapped her arms around Siyeon and let her cry against her chest. She wasn’t going to let anyone hurt that girl again.
“You silly child.”
The fox walked cautiously in the alley, making sure to stay out of bite range. Although the fact that she was a white wolf had nothing to do with it, it was true that the young adult had difficulties controlling herself when in animal form.
“Siyeon, it’s me. I’m here to bring you home.”
As soon as she recognised the voice Siyeon didn’t hesitate and turned back into her human form immediately. The fox opened her arms and the girl rushed in to hug her. All Han Dong heard was a muffled “I’m sorry” followed by small hiccups. She could already feel the tears falling on her neck which made her sigh.
“It’s okay. Whatever this is, we’ll figure it out.”
***
The ride back to Han Dong’s home was awkwardly silent. Every once in a while the fox would glance at the passenger seat to watch how Siyeon was doing and every time the werewolf avoided her gaze in embarrassment.
Kitsunes weren’t the most patient kind. They were wise, but their way of sharing that wisdom was through tough love and reality checks. So on the third time the werewolf tried to avoid any form of interaction, the fox pulled out of the main road and found a place to stop the car. Siyeon started at the sudden turn of the wheels and when Han Dong’s gaze went back to her she sunk her head in her shoulders, ready to receive the scold.
“I said we’ll figure it out but for that you need to talk. What happened?”
“I wanted to tell Minji what I was but I couldn’t so instead she’s the one who told me she was a dryad.”
“And you panicked because…”
“The Folks hate me! If she stays with me she’ll be an outcast like me.”
“Did she reject you?”
“It’s better to call it off before people start realising what she is…”
“Siyeon!” Han Dong stopped the spiralling and continued in a sharp voice. “Did. She. Reject you?”
“I – I ran away without listening to her.”
The fox couldn’t hold back the heavy sigh that came out of her mouth.
“Not to be condescending, but werewolves are clearly not the brightest. And all of that because you met that good for nothing Jinwoo…”
“How do you know that?”
“His scent is on you. You know that stupid excuse for a wolf will stop at nothing to make you feel rejected.”
“He doesn’t have to try hard for that.”
The woman with orange hair stopped for a minute to study the young woman next to her. It was true that the werewolf had been rejected by most of the Folks she had met just on the assumption that she brought bad omen. But Han Dong had hoped that while growing up, the wolf would have learned not to care about the masses and focus on the genuinely good people who were ready to welcome her.
“Siyeon, some choices aren’t for you to make. Some people will hate you without reason or logic, and others will love you in very much the same way and you just have to let them. Besides, there are things in this world that we can’t control.”
The tinting of a bell started ringing in Siyeon’s ears. The werewolf shifted her head to try to locate the origin of the sound, but once again she deduced that it was not coming from her side of the world.
“You hear them, right?”, Han Dong stated, more as an affirmation than a question.
“What do they mean?”
“Follow them and find out.”
Siyeon looked around and recognised where they were. They had come back to the city’s main districts, not too far from Shibuya. The bells tinted louder. She knew where she had to go.
She got out of the car and started to run on the side walk, bumping into the by-passers and owning some disdainful looks in return. She didn’t care. She turned into the busy alley-ways and looked at the neon signs above her to guide her. She knew them all by now, after passing so much time looking at them to ignore the Moon.
The bells rang louder. She was there. Standing at a crossroads, a young woman with her hair as red as wine was waiting for someone with the determination of those who still believe in fate. Siyeon walked to her, panting and gasping for air.
“Minji! I came back to you.”
The dryad looked calmly at her. Surprisingly she wasn’t smiling. It never occurred to the werewolf before how cold Minji could be when the sun of her smile wasn’t lighting her face.
“I knew you would.”
“How? Do you hear the bells too? What do they mean?”
Minji huffed. As much as she wanted to express her frustration, there was just something about Siyeon’s carelessness and naïve curiosity that made her quietly soften. Her scold bore more amusement than resentment.
“Really, Lee Siyeon? You ran away from your girlfriend in the middle of the night and you care about some bells?”
The raven-haired girl felt shame drowning her. She fixed her gaze on the floor not to have to look at Minji in the eyes.
“I – I’m sorry.”
“Apologies accepted.”
Siyeon’s eyes perked up to see the dryad harbouring a smug face, that’s when the werewolf realised she was messing with her on purpose. The woman with wine-red hair soften, but her gaze didn’t lose its intensity. She hadn’t said what she wanted to say.
“You are beautiful Siyeon. And not just physically, I mean obviously you are extremely beautiful in that way as well, but your soul is beautiful too. Sometimes it’s scary just how much love you can give without the need to receive it back. But the thing is you deserve to be loved too. I love you Siyeon, so please don’t run away.”
The werewolf’s eyes widened. She felt like her whole body was ready to give up on her but somehow she was managing to stand. She was the one who wanted to say that. Up until now she had always been the one to say that and they all had run away as if those words were cursed. So Siyeon had stopped saying them. If her heart wasn’t pounding so hard within her chest she could almost forget where she was.
“I love you too. I love you so much, I didn’t want to hurt you. I was scared. The Folks, every time they learn what I am, they say they don’t care but eventually they can’t handle the shame and they leave. You’re one of the last of your kind, you shouldn’t choose to be an outcast.”
Siyeon hadn’t realised she was shouting, but Minji stayed calm.
“I thought I told you before. I only need one meaningful person.”
The bells tinted again. It was the only thing the werewolf could hear besides her girlfriend’s voice. One nod from Minji was enough to understand she was hearing it too.
“That sound you hear, it’s the sound that two souls make when they resonate with each other. You’re my soulmate Siyeon. Now and forever, until our time on this shore is done and even after we leave to the other side…”
Siyeon’s lips crashed on Minji’s before she could properly end her sentence. The dryad felt the nails diving in her hair and grazing her scalp as the younger one pulled her closer to devour her.
Siyeon didn’t care. She didn’t know why she did before. She had always known Minji meant more to her than anyone else. A moan escaped her when she felt the nails digging in her neck. The kiss was messy and rough. The dryad’s lilac scent was mixing with her own fragrance, a combination of cedar and jasmine.
“Now and forever.”
Those words sounded nice. Siyeon repeated them to seal their love, announced by fate and blessed under the neon lights.
