maybe, i'll be yours (baby, i'll be yours)

Summary:

Oikawa sends a wrong text to Suga one day and Suga is...confused, but rolls with it. It turns out to be the best wrong text Suga has ever received.

Work Text:

Suga stared at the ceiling, lying flat on his back. Karasuno had just finished practice, all hanging out in the gym a little longer than usual. The Inter-High had just ended for them, they had lost to Aoba Johsai yesterday. It had been a close game, but...they hadn’t won in the end. Suga sighed to himself, he wished he had played more, done more, would they have won then? He closed his eyes and shook his head a little, no reason to regret it now. They still had the Spring Tournament. He sat up, looking around. Everyone was quieter than usual, even Nishinoya and Hinata. He pulled out his phone and looked at the news, the Final Round had been today, Shiratorizawa versus Aoba Johsai. Aoba Johsai had lost, they won no sets.

If we can’t beat Seijoh, how are we going to beat Shiratorizawa? Suga thought, glumly.

Just then, his phone buzzed with a text message. He blinked at it, an unknown number, he opened the message.

Unknown Number

hi tamaki its oikawa

you gave me your number a few days ago

do you still wanna go on that date to the movies?

Suga stared at the message, there was no way it was Aoba Johsai’s Oikawa that had just sent him a wrong number text. About a date. Ouch.

suga

uh

hate to break it to you but

this isnt tamaki

the great king?

oh

uh...who is this?

suga

the great king?

sugawara?

oh! mr. pleasant setter whos not all that pleasant when playing volleyball

Suga blinked at his phone, this was definitely Aoba Johsai’s Oikawa texting him. He thought about not replying, but he felt somewhat bad for him. The guy had just gotten crushed by a rival team and ghosted for a date, he could probably use someone to talk to, even if it was a rival player.

suga

you...gave me a nickname?

the great king

suga

Suga nearly bumped straight into Asahi in the club room. Oh, Suga realized, he doesn’t like girls...wait...this could be my chance. Suga changed quickly, snatching his phone back up once he was done, typing quickly.

kou-chan

hes hot you should set me up

the great king

IWAIZUMI?!?!

NO!!!!

Suga actually laughed out loud at that, he did feel bad for Oikawa, but he was still going to mess with him, his team did just kick his team’s ass. Daichi and Tanaka shot him a weird look, but he ignored it.

kou-chan

im KIDDING about iwaizumi

Suga sent the next text before he even realized what he was doing.

kou-chan

Suga stared at the phone clutched in his hand. What has he agreed to?

Suga was jumpy all day during school on Friday, even in practice he messed up more often than usual. Daichi and Asahi had kept giving him weird glances, but he had shook them off. It’s not like this is a date...we aren’t even friends...I’m just going to roast him and the movie, that’s all, yeah, Suga thought to himself, for the millionth time that day. He tripped over his own feet and nearly fell face first into the ground trying to set the ball. Ukai called a day, the team began their cool-down stretches, eyeing Suga.

“Suga-san, are you coming to the dinner tonight?” Hinata asked, as he stretched out his legs.

“Uh, I actually have plans for tonight,” Suga mumbled.

Tanaka’s head shot up at that from where he was laying on the floor, “Oh? What plans?”

“Uh, I’m just going to the movies...with a friend,” Suga replied, he could feel his cheeks heating up.

Apparently, so could everyone else, “Suga-san has a date !” screeched Nishinoya.

“It’s not a date!” Suga protested, “We are just friends!”

We aren’t even friends, Suga thought, but it’s not like I can easily explain I’m going with Oikawa, just because he sent me a wrong number text.

“Is it just going to be the two of you?” Hinata piped up, grinning.

“Yes, but as friends .”

“My boy has a date!” Tanaka yelled, pretending to wipe away a tear, “They grow up so fast!”

Suga took off his shoe and threw it at Tanaka’s head, who just laughed, “We. Are. Friends! Just friends!”

“Does she go to our school?” Nishinoya asked.

“No.” Suga said, that was true.

“Is she pretty?” Hinata asked.

“Uh, yeah?” Suga didn’t really know how to answer that.

“What movie?” Tanaka asked.

“I am no longer taking questions, thanks!” Suga said, clapping his hands together.

“Let’s leave Suga alone,” Daichi said, “He’s probably already really nervous for his date, no need to make it worse.”

Suga was going to kill all his teammates. He placed his head and his hands and groaned as everyone laughed. They didn’t stop pestering him on the walk home either, he refused to answer any questions about when and where they were going or what movie. He was not having one of them show up, because he knew they would. Once he was finally home, he checked the clock. He still had an hour to get ready. It’s not a date, Suga told himself, as he changed into yet another outfit, his clothes covered his room. He really had no idea what to wear, but finally settled for a simple white t-shirt and some black jeans. He quickly tucked in his shirt and grabbed the jean jacket that was hanging by the door.

“I’m going to the movies!” he called out.

“Okay!” his mom replied.

Suga could feel his heart beat faster and faster as he got closer to the theater. His phone buzzed with a message as he arrived, Oikawa was here. Suga spotted him easily, he was dressed simply too, a long sleeved, black t-shirt and jeans and glasses? Oikawa spotted him and smiled and waved.

“Kou-chan!” he called out.

Suga smiled and waved, “Hey, Oikawa.”

They bought their tickets and some popcorn and two sodas and headed into their theater, sitting down close to the middle of the theater. Suga shoved a handful of popcorn into his mouth.

“At least wait until the movie starts!” Oikawa chided, smacking his hand when he reached for another scoop.

“I’m gonna fall asleep during it, since it’s such a bad movie,” Suga said, mouth full of popcorn.

Oikawa scoffed, “I won’t let you.”

Suga was surprised he didn’t find this awkward at all, they chatted for a little bit since they had a few minutes before the trailers even started. They were...oddly similar. Suga found himself not wanting the movie to start, he wanted to keep talking to Oikawa.

“So, glasses?” Suga asked, snatching another handful of popcorn.

Oikawa glared at him and moved the popcorn to the other side, so Suga would have to lean over him to grab some, “Not everyone has perfect vision, Mr. Pleasant. I really only wear contacts during games, got hit in the face once while wearing glasses and learned my lesson.”

Suga laughed, “Wish it had been me that smacked you.”

Oikawa stuck out his tongue, the trailers started. They fell silent, none of the trailers looked good, so Suga quickly checked his phone, turning off his location, just in case. He had several messages in the team group chat wishing him good luck on his date. Suga rolled his eyes and turned off his phone.

The movie was, in fact, terrible. The plot itself was terrible, not to mention the CGI effects. Suga loved every second of it, Oikawa would lightly tap Suga’s knee so he could explain something, as if Suga wasn’t watching the exact same movie, but he didn’t mind. It was kind of endearing, how much Oikawa was into such a cheesy movie, he sat on the edge of his seat during any major action scene. He even cried at one point, when one of the characters died, apparently he had been in every single movie. Once the end credits started rolling, Oikawa leaned back in his seat, placing his hands behind his head, grinning at Suga.

“So, Kou-chan, what did you think of the movie?” he asked.

“I may have enjoyed it, just a little bit. It was really terrible though,” Suga mumbled, crossing his arms.

Oikawa chuckled, “I told you I’d convert you into a fan.”

“If you think I’m going to watch the rest, you’re wrong.”

“You say that now.”

Right then, Oikawa’s stomach growled, quite loudly. Suga had been the one who ate most of the popcorn, Oikawa had been too focused on the movie.

“Hungry?” Suga asked, trying not to laugh.

“No…” Oikawa muttered.

“What a bold-faced lie, anyone within a ten mile radius heard that,” Suga said, pointing at Oikawa’s stomach for good measure.

Oikawa smacked his hand, “I’ll eat when I get home.”

“Or we could go get dinner somewhere, I’m still hungry,” Suga suggested.

Oikawa blinked at him, “Okay.”

The two of them were sitting in some fast-food restaurant. Oikawa was busy inhaling his fries, he had already finished his burger.

“Slow down, you’re gonna make yourself sick,” Suga said, mildly horrified.

Oikawa just flicked him off, Suga threw a fry at him. Oikawa finished his meal, Suga took a bite of his burger, rolling his eyes.

“So, you liked the movie,” Oikawa said, smirking.

Suga flicked him off this time, “I said I enjoyed it, not liked it. The aliens were stupid, they were practically robots.”

“Robot aliens.”

“Stupid. Though I wouldn’t mind being able to disintegrate people with laser eyes, one look at my enemy, bam, gone.”

“It’d make volleyball a lot easier.”

“It’d make it pretty boring. Also, the fact they’re on the moon and we never noticed? Like people have been on the moon, I think we would have seen...something?”

“Moon landing was fake.”

“Do not ! What about the International Space Station? They would have seen something!”

“The aliens messed with the satellites, remember?”

Suga rolled his eyes, “There’s no way they could mess with every single satellite. There’s like...a lot?”

“They had been doing it for years , Kou-chan, aliens could pull it off.”

“Let me roast the movie in peace, thank you.”

“It’d make more sense if you watched the first four.”

“I am not going to do that.”

“Are you going to finish your fries?”

Suga rolled his eyes again, handing Oikawa the rest of his fries. He inhaled those too. Suga was partly horrified, partly impressed. They left the restaurant a little bit after that, walking shoulder to shoulder back home. They spent the entire time arguing over the movie until they reached Oikawa’s house. Oikawa glanced down at Suga, Suga felt his heart rate skyrocket.

“I had a fun time,” Oikawa said, smiling softly.

“I did too, we should hang out again,” Suga said, hoping it was dark enough that Oikawa couldn’t see his cheeks turning red.

Oikawa’s smile turned brighter, “I’d like that, see you around.”

Suga couldn’t figure out why he felt disappointed as he watched Oikawa enter his house, he shook his head and headed home, making sure to text Oikawa he had arrived back safely.

“How was your date?” Nishinoya asked, as soon as he walked into the clubroom on Monday.

“It wasn’t a date!” Suga groaned.

“What did you two do?” he asked.

“We went to the movies and had dinner afterwards.”

“That’s...a date, Suga-san,” Tsukishima said, looking up from his phone.

“As friends! We did that as friends!” Suga protested.

Tsukishima stared at him for a moment before going back to looking at his phone. Yamaguchi whispered something in Tsukishima’s ear and they both smirked. Suga did not want to know. Ukai drilled them enough at practice that no one had the time to bug Suga about his “date”. Suga greatly appreciated it. Practice went smoothly, until Hinata smacked Kageyama in the back of the head again, trying to serve. Suga held Kageyama back as Hinata cowered behind Tanaka, apologizing profusely, while also trying to not laugh. After two hours, Ukai called it a day, letting them cool down and relax. They made their way back to the club room and Suga checked his phone, he had a message from Oikawa.

the great alien nerd

here.

Suga nearly dropped his phone, it was a photo of Oikawa and Iwaizumi, posing, shirtless. Oikawa had more muscle than Suga previously thought. He took a moment to collect himself before replying.

Suga felt his heart do a little flip. He had to get back at Oikawa.

“Daichi come here,” he said, grabbing Daichi.

Daichi just raised his eyebrow at him, but posed for the photo anyways. Suga inspected it, then sent it.

kou-chan (secret alien nerd)

here~

Suga watched as a bubble popped up, showing Oikawa was texting, then it disappeared, popped back up, disappeared again. It didn’t pop back up. Suga frowned and tucked his phone away.

“What was the photo for?” Daichi asked.

“Uh, nothing,” Suga mumbled.

“Did you send a shirtless picture of you and Daichi to the girl?!” Tanaka yelled.

No! ” Suga said, cheeks red.

“Liar! You’re blushing!” Tanaka laughed.

“What? Are you trying to kill her?” Asahi asked, sounding genuinely concerned.

“No! It wasn’t to a girl. I’m just messing with a friend,” Suga said.

They eyed him strangely, Suga was glad the rest of the team was not here right now. He grabbed his stuff and said a quick goodbye, trying to not think about the fact Oikawa had typed a message and then didn’t send it. Did I go too far? Suga wondered, as he opened the door to his house. His phone buzzed.

the great alien nerd

wow

youre really pretty

Suga stared at the message, was he reading that right? He felt funny, like everything was too warm. His mom walked out of her room, noticing him.

“Oh, honey, you’re home! Hungry? I can start dinner!” she said.

Suga finally looked up from his phone, “Uh, yeah.”

His mom stared at him for a moment, “Are you feeling alright? You’re really red. Do you have a fever?”

“No, I’m fine!” he replied, a little too fast.

She narrowed her eyes, smirking, he’s been caught, “How was the movie?”

“It...it was okay…” Suga mumbled, avoiding her gaze.

“Uh huh...how about the person you were with? Oikawa?” she asked, sitting down at the table, staring at him, still grinning.

“What...do you mean?”

“Honey...I have raised you for eighteen years. Not once have you ever expressed interest in the War Against Us movies. You have never spoken one good word about them. You came home and told me, well, everything. Excitedly. You spent thirty minutes talking about Oikawa. Nonstop. You literally described his hands to me. You get all giddy when your phone goes off and you’re texting him all the time, I’m assuming. Sweetheart...you have a crush. And bad.”

Suga gawked at his mom, “I...did that?”

“Yes, you did.”

He slid to the floor, putting his head in his hands, Me? Having a crush on Oikawa? No...no that’s not…, Suga then thought about it, the texts, the pictures, Oikawa calling him pretty, Fuck. He flopped backwards, laying down, covering his face with his hands. His mom busted out laughing.

“Oh honey,” she said, between laughs, “Are you okay?”

“No!” Suga whined, “I am not! What do I do? He called me pretty, mom! What do I do?!”

“Ask him on a date. Go back to the movies with him. He definitely likes you,” she said.

“How do you know that?”

His mom just stared at him like he was stupid, “You just told me he called you pretty. I think that’s pretty obvious flirting.”

Suga just groaned, again.

He typed the message out asking Oikawa to go to the movies with him, then deleted it, again. He had been doing it all week, frantically typing it out while they texted and then panicked and hitting the backspace button. He couldn’t bring himself to hit send, it was a problem. The team was definitely noticing his behavior, too. At one point, Tanaka swiped his phone and Suga panicked , practically tackling Tanaka for it back. Daichi had put him in time-out for that, forcibly taking his phone for ten minutes. It was the worst ten minutes of Suga’s entire life.

“I do not know what’s going on, but you need to chill,” Daichi said, handing the phone to Tsukishima, who put it out of reach on top of the lockers in the club room.

“It’s really nothing,” Suga replied, eyeing the phone.

“It’s really something, since you nearly tackled Tanaka down the stairs , for your phone,” Daichi shot back.

Suga refused to admit Daichi had a point. Even Kiyoko had begun to quietly ask him if he was alright and if he wanted to talk. He politely turned her down. His mom was right, he had a crush and it was bad . He came to this conclusion when he was sitting on his bed, when Oikawa sent him a picture. He was bundled in blankets, sitting on the floor.

kou-chan (secret alien nerd)

Suga was standing outside Oikawa’s house. Oikawa answered the door, still bundled in a blanket, grinning.

“Come on in,” he said, holding the door open.

Suga stepped inside, slipping off his shoes. He followed Oikawa into the living room, where the couch had been overturned and cushions and blankets were set up.

“You built a fort?” Suga asked, amused.

“Gotta protect us from the aliens.”

“Dork.”

Oikawa stuck out his tongue, Suga did it back to him. They settled themselves into the fort, Suga purposefully sitting as far away as possible. Oikawa handed him his own bowl full of popcorn, “So I can have some this time,” and settled himself down with another bowl, starting the movies. Suga had to admit, the first one was actually decent, then it just started going downhill. Oikawa talked the entire time, explaining everything, even the theories people had come up with, Suga loved every minute of it. They had gravitated closer to each other, leaning against each other. They were on the fourth movie now, Suga could feel his eyes closing, resting his head on Oikawa’s shoulder. Oikawa rested his cheek on top of Suga’s head.

“What time is it?” Suga asked, yawning.

“Uh, two in the morning.”

“Shit.”

Suga sent a quick text to his mom, saying he was safe and would probably be crashing at a friend’s. He did not mention he was at Oikawa’s. She probably knew anyway. Oikawa slipped an arm around Suga’s waist and Suga felt his heartbeat quicken, quite dramatically. They didn’t speak, letting the movie play, though neither of them were paying attention. Suga could feel himself falling asleep.

Suga woke up to the smell of pancakes. The fort was empty, Oikawa had already gotten up. Suga did not dare think about whether they had cuddled or not. He poked his head out of the fort and saw Oikawa standing in the kitchen with his mom. They were both making pancakes, his mom mixing batter and Oikawa flipping the pancakes. Suga crept out of the fort, feeling extremely embarrassed that Oikawa’s mom had seen them when she came home.

“Oh! Sweetie, he’s awake!” his mom said, nudging Oikawa, grinning.

Oikawa turned and grinned, holding the pan and effortlessly flipping a pancake. Suga was hopelessly in love at this point. Suga walked into the kitchen, it really smelled heavenly.

“Hungry? Those ones on the plate are ready,” Oikawa said, gesturing to a stack of pancakes.

Suga nodded, carefully taking a plate and some pancakes, “Sorry for crashing.”

“Oh, honey, don’t apologize! It happens all the time with him and Iwaizumi!” his mom replied, flapping her hand.

“Mom,” Oikawa hissed, embarrassed.

“I remember the time you two fell asleep on the kitchen table after raiding the fridge for the cake I had hidden when you were in first grade,” she said, laughing.

Oikawa’s ears turned red and Suga laughed, “Oh, I think I still have the photo your dad took of you two.”

“Mom!” Oikawa whined.

Suga had to clap his hand over his mouth to stop himself from busting out laughing, Oikawa just looked like he was about to sink into the floor. His mom and him finished the pancakes, Oikawa grabbing some and sitting next to Suga, their knees touching. His mom said nothing, but grinned at them. Suga took a bite of the pancake, it was the best thing he’s ever tasted.

Suga was late for school. Oikawa’s house was a lot further away than his house from Karasuno and Suga had to stop at home so he could change into his uniform. He was lucky he made it into class when the bell rang, he had sprinted all the way here. He sat down, out of breath, as the bell stopped ringing. During break, he put his head down on his desk, he was tired. He felt his eyes close, only to be jolted awake by someone smacking his head. Lifting his head, he saw Daichi looming over him.

“You were late,” Daichi said.

“I overslept,” Suga muttered, he’d love to sleep right now, too.

“You...overslept?” Daichi asked, clearly not believing him.

“Yeah, I went to bed late last night, ended up sleeping through my alarm,” not a total lie.

“Why were you up late?”

“Couldn’t sleep, watched some movies, time got away from me.”

“Are...you doing alright?”

“Huh? Yeah, I’m fine,” Suga said, staring out the window.

“...Okay.”

Daichi walked away, Suga fell asleep almost immediately, only waking when the bell rang. Which is how he spent most of his breaks, even lunch, sleeping. Once the day ended and it was time for practice, Suga, for once, did not want to go. He dragged himself to the clubroom to change, everyone eyeing him, but saying nothing. When he walked into the gym, Ukai stopped him.

“You look like shit,” he said.

“Thanks coach,” Suga mumbled, he was aware.

Ukai spun him around, pushing him out the door, “Go home and get some sleep. You’re gonna hurt yourself or someone else if you try playing when you’re that exhausted.”

Suga, usually, would have protested, but instead, he just nodded and walked back to the club room to get his stuff and head home. His mom looked surprised when he walked in, then actually looked at him and rolled her eyes, she didn’t say anything as he went upstairs to his room to go lie down. He pulled out his phone, seeing some unread messages from Daichi.

Suga froze, staring at the last messages on his screen. Oikawa had called it a date, Suga screamed into his pillow and then, fell asleep.

It was Friday. Suga had a date tonight. He was going to go insane. He barely paid attention in any of his classes, even though exams were right around the corner. Practice, however, he managed to be fine, not messing up to the point where it was noticeable, it helped him shake off some of his nerves. The team was gathered in the club room, Tanaka, Nishinoya, Hinata, and Kageyama panicking, they were told to not fail any exams or they couldn’t go to Tokyo for the training camps. Ennoshita agreed to help Tanaka and Nishinoya study, but Hinata and Kageyama didn’t dare ask Tsukishima.

“Wait, who’s all coming to the dinner tonight?” Asahi asked.

“I’m not,” Suga replied.

“Oh? Why? Got another date?” Tanaka asked, elbowing him.

“Actually, yes.”

“Wait, what?” Tanaka gasped, wide-eyed.

“I have a date,” Suga said, grinning.

“What?!”

“With who?!”

“Can I come?!”

“Hinata you moron, why would Suga-san let you go on his date with him?”

“What are they like?”

“Do they go here?”

“What are you doing?”

Suga clasped his hands together, “I will be answering none of your questions.”

As Suga left, he heard Hinata and Nishinoya scream good luck, he turned and waved at them, smiling brightly. He headed home, once he got there, he showered and fixed his hair, opening his closet and staring at it. What the fuck do I wear? He thought, frowning. It was a repeat of his first time he went to the movies with Oikawa, he kept trying on outfits and then taking them off. His mom came into his room, looking somewhat concerned.

“Do you need help?” she asked, leaning against the door.

“Please,” Suga whispered.

Suga decided that he would never tell anyone that his mom picked out his outfit for his first date, he would die from embarrassment, but he was insanely grateful for it. She had picked out a tight-fitting white shirt and jeans. She even helped him put in his earrings, simple gold studs, two in each ear. He didn’t wear his jewelry often, but he trusted his mom.

“Have fun, honey,” she said, pinching his cheeks.

“Mom,” Suga whined.

“Oh! Can I take a picture, please?” she asked, pulling out her phone.

“Mom!” Suga squeaked out.

He let her take the picture. He met Oikawa at his house, he was already waiting outside when Suga arrived. He was dressed in a button-down and jeans and his glasses. He smiled when he saw Suga.

“You look like a professor,” Suga commented, giggling, “But, like a hot one.”

Oikawa snorted, “It...my mom helped, don’t judge.”

“Funny, my mom helped me, too.”

Oikawa smiled, wrapping an arm around Suga’s waist, resting his hand on Suga’s hip. Suga was going to lose it. Oikawa stared at him, his gaze landing on the earrings.

“Y-You...have p-piercings…” Oikawa stammered.

Suga smirked, “Yeah, I do.”

Oikawa turned his gaze straight ahead, “I like them,” his cheeks red.

Suga had yet to so Oikawa this flustered, he was going to enjoy every second of it. He pressed himself into Oikawa’s side, Oikawa tightened his grip on Suga’s hip.

Oikawa was a lot less confident once they reached the theater and bought their tickets and went in and sat down. Suga giggled, “Scared already?”

Oikawa huffed, “No.”

“Liar.”

“Shut up.”

Oikawa was an absolute scaredy-cat. His face was buried into Suga’s neck, one hand clinging to Suga’s upper arm and the other hand stuck in between his thighs, gripping one thigh tightly. He ended up like this right after the first jump-scare, Suga wished he had been able to record his scream.

“You’re not even watching the movie,” Suga whispered, grabbing popcorn.

“I think I’m fine like this,” Oikawa whispered back.

Suga certainly did not mind, “Nothing scary is happening right now.”

“You said that last time and I screeched like a banshee two seconds later.”

Suga snorted softly, Oikawa lifted his head ever so slightly, half-watching the screen. Nothing scary actually happened for a while, but then the music started to build and Oikawa stuck his face back in the crook of Suga’s neck. Suga would admit, this jump-scare did make him flinch, which made Oikawa chuckle.

“At least I didn’t scream like a banshee,” Suga hissed, nudging him.

Oikawa responded by pressing a kiss against Suga’s neck, shutting him up instantly. He could feel Oikawa smirking, he was going to kill the bastard. Suga nudged him a little later, getting Oikawa to lift his head, right when yet another jump-scare happened. Oikawa made a very unintelligible noise and flopped into Suga’s lap. Suga scoffed and messed with his hair.

The end credits started on screen, Oikawa pulled himself up from Suga’s lap and went wide-eyed and slumped into his chair.

“I think my soul left my body,” he mumbled.

“How? You barely watched the movie!” Suga teased.

Oikawa smacked Suga’s shoulder, “I’m never doing this again.”

“You say that now.”

“You watching War Against Us was different, you did so willingly. I will not watch a horror movie willingly, ever again. That was enough for me.”

“Awww, was wittle ‘Kawa scared of the big bad demon?”

Another smack, “Shut up.”

“C’mon, you hungry?”

“Yes.”

They walked to a nearby restaurant, a nicer one than last time, and ordered some food. Again, Suga watched in horrified fascination as Oikawa inhaled his meal. He ordered even more food, as Suga was still on his first meal. He insisted on paying for it all, since Suga had paid for the snacks, even though the meal was more expensive than the snacks had been. Suga lost the argument and Oikawa paid. They walked back home, chatting aimlessly, fingers intertwined. They slowed down as Oikawa’s house appeared.

“I had a really nice time,” Oikawa said, in a soft voice.

“Even though you nearly died?” Suga asked, softly teasing.

 Oikawa chuckled, “Yeah.”

They were at Oikawa’s house. Oikawa pulled Suga into a tight hug, Suga wrapped his arms around the brunette boy’s waist. Oikawa slid one hand into Suga’s back pocket, the other tilting his chin up, their eyes meeting. Suga froze, wide-eyed. Oikawa was smirking. He glanced down at Suga’s lips and then back into Suga’s eyes, brushing his thumb along Suga’s lips.

“Can I kiss you?” Oikawa asked, his voice barely audible.

Suga could only nod. Oikawa leaned down, pressing their lips together. One of his hands cupped Suga’s face, the other found its way to his lower back, gripping the fabric of his shirt tightly. Suga let his hands crawl their way up Oikawa’s torso, clutching his shirt in his fingers. They pulled apart, their face centimeters away from each other. Suga knew his cheeks were red, but so were Oikawa’s.

“Can I do that again?” Oikawa asked.

“What a stupid question,” Suga replied, tugging him back into another kiss.

He sighed in Oikawa’s mouth, relaxing. Oikawa’s grip tightened on his back, pushing them closer together. Suga parted his lips ever so slightly, letting Oikawa deepen the kiss. They stayed like that for several minutes, letting their hands trail around each other. Oikawa cupped Suga’s face as Suga gripped the front of Oikawa’s shirt, pushing Suga away. They stared at each other, breathless and wild-eyed, before breaking into giggles. Oikawa pressed his forehead against Suga’s.

“That was fun,” Suga whispered.

“Yeah,” Oikawa murmured.

“I...I should probably...get going,” Suga mumbled, not wanting to leave.

Oikawa hummed, “I guess so.”

They stepped apart, neither one of them wanting to move and for the moment to end. Suga started walking away first, before Oikawa pulled him back.

“Wait,” he murmured, “One more.”

He pulled Suga into another kiss, soft and gentle. It was the best one out of all of them.

It was summer, finals were over, they had some time off practice, everything was calm. Suga was sitting with Daichi in a park, waiting for Kiyoko, Asahi, Noya, and Tanaka. They were getting together to have a picnic before the Tokyo training camp, before things got hectic again. Suga was setting up the small sandwiches he had prepared and Daichi was laying down on the blanket, texting the others.

“I kissed Oikawa,” Suga blurted out.

Why did I have to say that now? Suga thought, cursing himself internally.

Daichi dropped his phone on his face, groaning in pain, before sitting up and looking over at Suga.

“You...what?” he said, slowly, like he didn’t hear Suga right.

 “I...kissed Oikawa,” Suga repeated.

“On...purpose?” Daichi asked, eyebrows raised.

“Yes.”

“Okay...why? When? What?” Daichi said, the realization finally washing over him.

“I’ve been seeing him,” Suga mumbled, feeling his cheeks warm.

“You’ve been seeing him...on purpose?”

“Yeah.”

“Since...when?”

“Uh, we’ve been hanging out since shortly after the Inter-High.”

Daichi smacked Suga’s shoulder, hard, “And you didn’t tell me?! What the fuck! Wait...holy shit... that’s who you went on the date with?!

“That was not a date. That was the first time we hung out!” Suga protested, smacking Daichi back.

“Okay, and you hung out with him on purpose?”

“Will you stop adding on purpose to the end of every question? Yes, it was all on purpose, kind of. Going to the movies was on purpose, him texting me was not.”

“Okay, explain.”

“Explain what?”

“Literally everything, Suga. Give me the details.”

Suga sat there and told Daichi everything, from the wrong text, the movies, the hanging out, the really embarrassing part where his mom called him out on his crush (taking a break to smack Daichi as he busted out laughing), the accidental sleepover and pancakes, the first (actual) date and the kiss. Daichi listened to everything, grinning ear to ear. The others were finally arriving, waving as they walked over.

Daichi leaned over and whispered as everyone else sat down, “I’m really happy for you.”

Suga gave him a smile, “Thanks.”

“Sandwiches!!” Noya yelled, grabbing several.

Asahi sighed, “Leave some for the rest of us!”

Noya mumbled something, but no one understood since his mouth was full. He finished his sandwiches incredibly fast, Suga would love to see him and Oikawa in an eating contest. They hung out for a while, laying around and enjoying the sun and warmth. Suga was seconds from dozing off when Noya suddenly gasped.

“Wait, guys, Asahi and I kissed!” Noya shouted, beaming.

Asahi choked on his sandwich, face red. Everyone else just gawked at them. Noya just grinned, beaming like he had won Nationals. Kiyoko handed Asahi some water.

“About time!” Tanaka said, slapping Asahi on the back.

Daichi glanced at Suga, but he shook his head. He wasn’t ready to tell them, not yet. However, he could still have some fun.

“What about you and Michimiya?” Suga asked, staring directly at Daichi.

“What...are you talking about?” Daichi asked, ears turning red.

“Dude...she clearly likes you,” Tanaka said, snorting.

“Huh?”

Suga and everyone else stared at Daichi, blank faces, “You...are so dense,” Kiyoko mumbled. Tanaka and Noya busted out laughing, even Suga was wheezing. Daichi pinched Suga’s arm in retaliation.

“Oh, yeah? I’m dense?” Daichi hissed at Suga, grinning, “Who was the one whose mom had to tell them they had a crush.”

Suga pinched Daichi back, “Shut it.”

The sun was beginning to go down, they packed up their stuff and started their walks home. Tanaka and Kiyoko were the first to separate from the group, waving goodbye as they left. Leaving Asahi and Noya, who were holding hands, and Daichi and Suga. They passed Sakanoshita Store, Ukai nodding to them as they walked by. The door to the shop opened and they all looked over, Suga froze, it was Oikawa. He stared at them and they stared back, he was holding a bag and dressed in a War Against Us t-shirt and sweatpants.

“You ready to get your ass beat in the Spring?!” Noya shouted.

Oikawa just glanced at him, “Sure.”

“What are you doing over here?” Suga asked, trying to keep his voice neutral.

Oikawa stared at him, smirking, “If you must know, I was picking up ingredients for dinner. You can come over, if you want!”

Suga felt his cheeks flare red and looked away, Daichi was just trying to hold it together, keeping a hand over his mouth so he didn’t laugh.

“Is...that an invitation for all of us?” Asahi asked, eyeing Oikawa, trying to tell if he was joking or not.

“Nope! Just for Kou-chan!” Oikawa said, beaming a smile.

Suga was going to kill him. Asahi and Noya eyed Suga and Daichi was laughing at this point, his shoulders shaking silently. Suga was actually going to kill them all. Oikawa was still grinning, waiting for an answer.

“I...guess…” Suga mumbled.

He could feel Asahi and Noya gawking at him from behind, Daichi took this opportunity to shove Suga towards Oikawa. He stumbled forward, Oikawa’s free arm wrapping around his waist to keep Suga from falling, pressing them together, that stupid smirk still on his face. He was sure he heard Noya whisper ‘what the fuck’. Suga separated himself from Oikawa, looking anywhere, but at him or his friends. Oikawa clearly wasn’t going to let them walk away just yet, he slid his arm around Suga’s shoulders, slowly.

“Great! Let’s go!” he said, finally walking away, taking Suga with him.

Suga could hear Noya whispering to Asahi, he wasn’t exactly being quiet. Daichi was probably still laughing, forcing Noya and Asahi to keep walking. Once Suga and Oikawa were out of sight, Suga turned to glare at him.

“I’m gonna kill you,” he grumbled.

“Aww, was someone embarrassed in front of their friends?” Oikawa teased, kissing Suga’s cheek.

“Shut up.”

They were back in a fort in Oikawa’s living room, after eating dinner. Suga had thanked and complimented Oikawa’s mother’s cooking to no end, flustering her. They were flipping through the channels to see what was on when Suga screeched, starling Oikawa.

“Go back! Go back!”

Oikawa flipped back to the last channel, it was The Ring.

“This is my favorite movie!”

Oikawa eyed him, “It’s a horror movie, isn’t it?”

“No, it’s a nice romantic movie about an engagement!”

Oikawa’s eyes flicked back to the screen, the opening scene playing, “You’re a liar. People literally just died!”

“C’mon!” Suga whined, “It’ll be fun, it’s a good movie!”

“I cannot believe I’m agreeing to this,” Oikawa muttered, already wrapping himself around Suga.

Oikawa was sitting behind Suga, face buried into the crook of his neck, but he was actually looking at the TV, so Suga would take it. His hands were gripping Suga’s hips, tightening anytime he thought something scary was going to happen, trying to pull Suga further into his lap. Suga really did not mind, the movie was reaching the climatic point, causing Oikawa to finally look away, pressing his face down into Suga’s neck.

“Aw, too scared?” Suga teased, patting his head.

Oikawa responded by nibbling on his neck, which promptly shut him up. His hands slid under Suga’s shirt, his fingertips lightly brushing along Suga’s stomach, sending a shiver up Suga’s spine. He could feel Oikawa smirking, as he continued to kiss his neck. He let out a shaky sigh, relaxing a bit in Oikawa’s hold.

“Oikawa,” Suga murmured.

“Hm?” Oikawa hummed.

“Look up.”

He did, right as a jump-scare happened, “Fuck!” he screeched, collapsing onto the floor. Suga wheezed, cackling at him. Oikawa kicked Suga’s thigh, “You bastard! You did that on purpose!”

“Yeah, yeah I did,” Suga wheezed, tears forming in his eyes, “Man, I wish I had caught that on video.”

Oikawa rolled away from him, his back to Suga. Suga leaned over him, still giggling, “Aw, babe, it’s okay it’s just a movie.”

“Don’t talk to me!”

“‘Kaaawaaaa,” Suga whined, lying on top of Oikawa, “I’m soooorry!”

“No, you are not!”

Suga prodded Oikawa repeatedly, “Babe, baby, honey.”

Oikawa huffed, sitting up. He grabbed Suga by the waist, pulling him into his lap so they were facing each other. Suga just beamed at him, wrapping his arms around Oikawa’s neck.

“You are a little shit, you’re lucky I like you,” Oikawa said, pouting.

Suga gave him a quick peck on the lips, “I really am.”

Oikawa just rolled his eyes, “Yeah, yeah.”

The movie had ended, but neither of them noticed. Oikawa was kissing him, holding Suga firmly in place.

Suga yawned as he headed to the bus, they were leaving for Tokyo today and Suga had crashed at Oikawa’s last night, but had managed to get up with enough time to get to Karasuno. Takeda noticed him coming and smiled, then stuck his arm out to stop Suga.

“Sugawara,” he said, still smiling, “Can I talk to you for a moment?”

Suga blinked at him, “Uh, sure?” Am I in trouble? What did I do?

Takeda pulled him a little bit further away from the group, who all looked equally confused. Ukai stepped closer to them, very obviously trying to eavesdrop.

“Sugawara, are you seeing someone?” Takeda asked.

Suga felt himself go red in the face, “Uh, yes…”

Takeda nodded, his eyes glancing down at Suga’s neck. The realization of what Takeda was looking at hit Suga, who froze, Oh...no...oh no...someone please kill me.

“Uh huh, are you two being safe?” Takeda asked, still smiling, but there was a knowing gleam in his eyes.

“W-What?” Suga choked out.

“Are you two being safe, you know, in the--”

Suga choked on air, “Sensei...we are not doing...that...I...that’s not…”

Ukai walked away, Suga could see him whispering to Kiyoko, he really wanted to die right now.

“Well, as long as you know--”

“I know, Sensei!” Suga squeaked, his voice unnaturally high.

Takeda just nodded and smiled, Kiyoko carefully walked up to them, a make-up bag in hand. Suga said nothing as he followed her to the nearest bathroom. She didn’t ask questions and Suga was thankful for it.

“Thank you,” he mumbled, unable to look her in the eye.

“It’s fine,” she replied, keeping a straight face, but he could hear the smirk in her voice, “The first-years probably shouldn’t see this.”

He closed his eyes and sighed through his nose, “I’m gonna kill him.”

Kiyoko smiled just a bit, “Who?”

“Uh…Oikawa...”

“Oh? Cute.”

Suga felt himself blush, “Yeah.”

“Well, he clearly likes you.”

“Kiyoko, please.”

Once Suga boarded the bus and sat down, he buried his head in hands. Daichi was snickering next to him, Suga elbowed him.

“So,” Daichi asked, loudly, “What was Takeda talking to you about?”

“That is absolutely nobody’s business!”

The camp...was interesting. Karasuno lost every game they played, doing a lot of penalty laps. It was the last day, everyone being treated to a barbeque. Suga had made himself comfy sitting on the hillside, watching Daichi and Kuroo attempting to convince Tsukishima to eat more and also spotting Kenma trying to sneak away, but ultimately getting caught. He also noticed Yachi looking...extremely stressed. He watched everyone mingle around, laughter filling the summer sky, when someone plopped down next to him.

“Mind if I sit here?”

Suga shook his head, “Not at all.”

It was Akaashi, Fukurodani’s setter. They ate for a bit in silence, watching as Hinata and Lev argued about something while Kuroo and Bokuto were chatting away. Suga closed his eyes and let this moment sink in, this week had been hard, but it was well worth it. He felt better than ever about the Spring Tournament coming up.

“Sugawara-san…” Akaashi started.

“You can call me Suga,” Suga said.

“Suga-san, do you have a boyfriend?”

Suga choked on the rice he was eating, Akaashi handed him a cup of water, “Do I...Yeah, actually, I do have a boyfriend...Why?”

Suga realized he hadn’t actually said that out loud before, calling Oikawa his boyfriend.

Akaashi shrugged, “I think you’re pretty, would’ve asked you on a date.”

Suga gawked at him, “You’re not...dating Bokuto?”

“What? Uh...no?”

“Oh.”

“Why does everyone think we’re dating?”

“Akaashi!” Bokuto shouted, running over, wrapping Akaashi in a hug.

“Gee, Akaashi, I have no idea,” Suga said, laughing.

Karasuno waved at everyone as they boarded the bus to head home. As soon as everyone was on the bus, they all fell asleep. It was a long week, but Suga wouldn’t have changed it for the world. Once they arrived back at Karasuno and managed to get all their stuff, they all walked towards the entrance of the school to head home. Except, someone was standing there, waiting for them.

“Oi,” Tanaka yelled, “You here to start a fight?”

Oikawa just stared at him, “Uh, no.”

Daichi smacked the back of Tanaka’s head, “Stop trying to start fights.”

“He’s the one in our turf!” Tanaka whined, rubbing his head.

“Why did you have to say it like that?” snorted Tsukishima, as Yamaguchi giggled with him.

“I’m waiting on my boyfriend,” Oikawa said, smiling.

Kageyama looked like he was about to pass out, Hinata gasping next to him. Suga froze, Oikawa had texted him saying he’d be waiting, but he didn’t think he’d be waiting at Karasuno.

“B-Boyfriend?” Asahi whispered, glancing at Suga.

Suga glared at Daichi who shrugged, “I never said anything!”

“Wait, wait, wait!” Noya shouted, whirling between Suga and Oikawa, pointing at them, “You and you?!”

“Uh, yes,” Oikawa and Suga said, in unison.

Noya went speechless, still pointing at them, Suga couldn’t help, but laugh. Noya was rarely speechless. He looked at them both once more, before just screaming in shock.

“Noya! Quiet!” Asahi muttered, pulling him back.

Suga decided to take advantage of his teammates absolutely losing their minds right now, he strolled over to Oikawa, wrapping his arms around his waist, staring up at him and pouting. He was sure the person who gagged was Tsukishima.

“Ready to go, babe?” he asked, smiling.

Oikawa grinned and kissed him, the person choking had to be Kageyama, “Yeah.”

Keeping one arm around Oikawa’s waist, Suga turned and waved, grinning, “See you guys later!”

As soon as they were out of sight, he could hear them all screaming at Daichi.

Summer was over and everything was in full swing. The teams were preparing for the Spring Tournament, everyone aiming to win and go to Nationals. The practices stretched longer and longer, Suga and Oikawa spent little time together, but kept each other updated any time they could.

Today was the start of the Spring Tournament. Karasuno arrived at Sendai, full of nerves, but ready to win. We’ve got this, we’re gonna go to Nationals, Suga thought. He could feel the determination rolling off the team as they prepared for their first game. They won against Johzenji, taking both sets, making it past the first round. Up next was the Quarter Finals, against Wakutani Minami. They could do this, they could do this. That feeling fled, briefly, when Suga watched in mounting horror as Tanaka and Daichi dived to retrieve a ball, colliding. The game stopped, everyone frozen. Daichi groaned softly as he woke up, blinking and looking around. Ukai helped him to his feet.

“W-What?” Daichi mumbled, holding his head.

“You got hurt, you need to go to the infirmary,” Ukai replied.

“I’m fine,” Daichi mumbled, as blood dribbled out of his mouth, he spit out a tooth.

“Let’s go,” Ukai said, steering Daichi away.

Suga squeezed Daichi’s shoulder as he passed, he could see Oikawa looking over at them from the other court. He made eye contact with him, Oikawa gave a small nod of encouragement.

Karasuno won the first set against Wakunan, but they were behind in the second set. Daichi was out for the rest of this game and the team was feeling it now. They were behind, 14 to 18. Suga balled his hands into fists, they still had a third set they could win, but it would be better if they took this set. That didn’t happen, they lost. This was it, they had to win this set. Suga screamed when they did, they made it to the semi-finals. This was it, they were up against Aoba Johsai again.

Karasuno took the first set, Suga was worried about Seijoh’s new player, Kyotani, but he believed in his team. They could win this, they had to win this. They were behind in the second set, Suga was in the game now. He stepped out to serve, sending it straight to Seijoh’s new player, getting him to take a knee. He could see Oikawa smirk in annoyance behind him, Suga smirked too, sure, they were dating. Didn’t mean Suga didn’t want to kick Oikawa’s ass for what happened during the Inter-High. They still lost the second set, it was all or nothing now. Suga thought he was going to puke from nerves and he wasn’t even playing at the moment. He watched in awe as Kageyama and Hinata set up their fast attack, the ball ricocheting off the blockers arm as Oikawa tried to save it, the ball spinning out and hitting the floor. The whistle blew, 26-24. We won, we made it, we just have to beat Shiratorizawa, Suga thought, screaming as he hugged Daichi and Asahi. He could see Oikawa comforting Iwaizumi, while trying to hold himself together. Aoba Johsai walked out of the gym, defeated.

The team was waiting for the bus to come pick them up. Suga kept checking his phone, he knew Oikawa was upset right now, but...still. Suddenly, Daichi grabbed his shoulder.

“Over there,” Daichi whispered, pointing.

Oikawa was standing with Aoba Johsai, his eyes red. He made eye contact with Suga and Suga found himself running towards him, they nearly toppled over once Suga pulled him into a hug.

“You did a great fucking job,” Suga said, “I’m proud of you.”

“Beat Shiratorizawa for me,” Oikawa murmured.

We...won...we beat Shiratorizawa , Suga thought, crying while hugging Asahi and Daichi. They had just played a full five set game, won, and now they were going to Nationals. The cheering from the stands was explosive, he could hear Saeko, Tanaka’s sister, screaming the loudest. The awards ceremony started, Suga bowing as they placed the medal around his neck. Then it was over, they were going to Nationals. The team shuffled their way out of the gym, exhausted. Oikawa was sitting outside, with Iwaizumi. He spotted Suga and stood, smiling. Suga beamed at him and jumped into his arms.

“We did it!” Suga screeched as Oikawa laughed, “We’re going to Nationals!”

“Yeah, you are!” Oikawa replied, kissing him.

They ended within the top eight in the Nation. Suga was holding back his tears as he bowed to the gym with Kiyoko, Asahi, and Daichi. Volleyball was over for him. As they walked down the stairs, Daichi clapped both Asahi and him on the back.

“We were top eight in the prefecture. Now, we’re top eight in the nation,” he said, smiling.

Suga bawled, “I wanted to keep playing!”

Kiyoko pulled him into a hug, “You guys did so well, I’m so proud.”

Suga sobbed into her shoulder, overwhelmed, “I don’t want this to end.”

“I know,” she replied, her own tears falling, “I know.”

Suga took a deep breath and wiped his eyes, the four of them joining the rest of the team. They were all outside, waiting to go back to the hotel. Tanaka was talking with someone, laughing, as Suga got closer, he was surprised to see who it was.

“‘Kawa?” he mumbled, dazed.

Oikawa flashed him a smile, Tanaka clapped Oikawa on the back and headed back over to the team, “W-What...you’re here?”

Oikawa wrapped his arms around Suga’s neck, letting Suga bury his face in the other boy’s chest. Suga sniffed, trying to not cry again.

“You did so well, so well . I am so proud of you,” Oikawa murmured.

“I didn’t want it to end, I don’t want to stop playing volleyball,” Suga mumbled.

“I know,” Oikawa whispered, his voice cracking, “I know.”

He rubbed small circles on Suga’s back, letting Suga cry. Ukai awkwardly shuffled over, clearing his throat.

“We...need to get back to the hotel,” he said.

Suga nodded, Ukai glanced over at Oikawa, “I guess you can come too, even though you’re the one who gave my kid that horrid hickey.”

Oikawa choked and Suga laughed. Once they were back at the hotel, they all settled in for dinner. There was still sporadic crying from the team, upset their time at Nationals was over. Oikawa looked somewhat uncomfortable being there, just sitting by Suga quietly.

“So!” Noya piped up, “How did you guys meet? You never did tell us anything!”

Oikawa went red, “Uh…”

“He texted me thinking it was someone else.”

“Kou-chan...please.”

“What? It’s funny.”

Noya nodded enthusiastically, “Okay, okay, and after that? How did you end up hanging out?”

Suga and Oikawa answered every question Noya threw at them, eventually the others piping in with their own, a sense of calm settled over everybody, finally accepting that Nationals were over.

“I don’t wanna study!” Suga whined, smacking his head down on the desk.

Oikawa didn’t look up from his textbook, which was laid out in front of him on his bed, “You’re gonna give yourself a concussion if you keep doing that.”

“Maybe I won’t have to take finals.”

“Don’t think that’s how that works, babe.”

Suga groaned, “Why can’t they just let us graduate, I got into college! I’m clearly smart enough to graduate highschool!”

“Babe, I love you, but please, I need to study.”

Suga whined again, but went back to studying. They only had two weeks of highschool left, it gave Suga a bittersweet feeling, he was excited to move on, but he was going to miss everyone.

Graduation was a simple affair, everyone receiving their diplomas and cheering. Asahi, him, and Daichi went to the gym one last time, hitting the ball around.

“I’m gonna miss you guys,” Suga mumbled.

“Stop, don’t be Asahi!” Daichi said, his voice thick with tears.

“Hey!” Asahi whined.

The ball fell when Daichi missed it, they laughed then looked at each other, the tears falling. Asahi pulled them into a hug, making them promise they would all keep in touch. They walked home together from Karasuno one last time.

It was summer once more, they had finally graduated after everything. Suga and Oikawa were wrapped up in each other in Suga’s bed, enjoying the lack of responsibilities. Oikawa had him pinned to his bed, his hands roaming on Suga’s bare torso, lips against his neck, leaving marks against his pale skin. He was pulling any noise he could get out of Suga, who had fistfuls of Oikawa’s shirt in his hands. Oikawa sighed into Suga’s neck, pulling away. He pressed a soft kiss against Suga’s lips, before resting his forehead against Suga’s.

“I love you,” Oikawa murmured.

“I love you, too.”

They laid there for a while, saying nothing. Suga could tell something was wrong, Oikawa wasn’t usually this quiet for this long.

“Hey...what’s on your mind?” Suga mumbled.

Oikawa sighed, “I got an offer...for a volleyball team.”

Suga nearly smacked their heads together trying to sit up, shifting until he was sitting in Oikawa’s lap, cupping his face.

“Babe, that’s amazing !” Suha breathed out, kissing him.

Oikawa bit his lip, “It’s in Argentina.”

Oh. “Oh.”

“It’s...for three years. The contract,” Oikawa continued, avoiding Suga’s gaze, “I accepted.”

Suga kissed him again, pretending his heart wasn’t breaking at the thought of Oikawa leaving, “Babe...I’m so happy for you, you deserve this. When...when do you leave?”

“Two weeks.”

Two weeks? We only have two weeks left together? Suga thought, he could feel the tears pricking his eyes, he forced a smile, “Then we have two weeks to do everything.”

Oikawa gave a watery smile, his own eyes glassy, “Yeah.”

They spent every day of the next two weeks together, besides one that Suga spent crying to Daichi, who tried his best to comfort him, saying that if anyone could make it through long distances it would be them, Suga didn’t feel any better. They went out to dinner or stayed home watching movies, curled into each other’s arms. Suga helped Oikawa pack his all his stuff, folding everything neatly into the boxes that would be shipped before he left. Oikawa pulled out his old Aoba Johsai jersey, handing it to Suga.

“Hold onto this for me,” he said.

Suga nodded wordlessly, folding the jersey and sticking it next to his shoes. The days flew by as much as Suga wished they wouldn’t. He found himself standing in the airport, two weeks later, with Iwaizumi. Oikawa standing before them, duffel bag in hand. None of them said anything for a moment.

“I’m going to miss you, I love you.” Oikawa said, finally speaking up, his voice thick with unshed tears.

Suga gave him the strongest smile he could muster, “Me too.”

Oikawa stood there for a moment, before pulling Suga into a kiss, “Seriously? Right in front of me?” Iwaizumi muttered, smiling.

They pulled apart, Suga trying to memorize the warmth of Oikawa’s embrace for one last time. Oikawa pulled Iwaizumi into a tight hug, “Take care.”

Iwaizumi patted his back, his eyes glassy, “I will,” once they pulled apart, Iwaizumi gave Oikawa a soft kick, shoving him in the direction of the security line, “Go, you’re gonna miss your flight.”

Suga watched as Oikawa’s back got smaller and smaller as he disappeared into the airport. Iwaizumi tossed his arm around Suga, tugging him back to the parking lot, “C’mon, let’s go.”

As soon as they were outside, Suga broke into sobs, Iwaizumi hugging him tightly, also crying.

The first two years went smoothly, they talked as much as they could with the time difference. Texting when they couldn’t. Oikawa kept him updated on anything, telling him everything he could, about how beautiful Buenos Aires was, how Suga would love the food, how training was going and his teammates were, Suga told him everything back, how his classes were going, how college itself was going, keeping him updated on Iwaizumi, who was now his roommate. They told each other everything, including the days where they struggled, Oikawa breaking down over the stress of not understanding the language and the barriers it caused, Suga crying when he failed his first exam and how exams absolutely sucked. Those two years went by faster than Suga could have imagined, the final year of college rolled around for him, as Oikawa’s contract was coming to an end in Argentina.

That final year, things shifted. They were arguing more, not telling each other anything. The communication was sparse and sometimes they wouldn’t talk for weeks. Suga hated it. He was sitting with Daichi, home in Miyagi for a bit, at Sakanoshita.

“I think Oikawa and I are going to break up,” Suga whispered.

Daichi slammed his soda down on the table, “What?! Why?!”

Suga shrugged, “We’ve...just been distant with each other lately. It’s not the same. I haven’t seen him in nearly three years, we’ve changed.”

Daichi frowned, “Suga...I’m sorry…”

“It’s fine,” Suga lied, “I just...don’t want it to end yet. Anyways, how are you and Michimiya? How’s being an EMT?”

“We’re good, uh, we’re planning on moving in together,” Daichi said, smiling, but still keeping an eye on Suga, “And it can be...a lot...at times. It’s been hard coming to terms I can’t save everyone. But, it’s worth it. I really like it.”

“Better than that idea to become a cop?” Suga teased.

“Yeah,” Daichi chuckled, before turning serious, “Suga, you know I’m here for you, right? If anything happens...I’m here to talk.”

Suga smiled, “I know.”

The days went by, turning into weeks and months. Suga was graduating soon, having secured a job as a kindergarten teacher in Tokyo. He was in the process of packing his apartment, when his phone rang.

Oikawa’s name popped up. Suga sighed, answering it.

“Hey,” Oikawa mumbled.

“Hey, what’s up?” Suga asked, trying to keep his voice neutral.

“Nothing...I just missed you.”

Suga blinked at the box he was looking into, “I’ve missed you, too.”

“I know we haven’t...been talking a lot. It’s been crazy here, we’ve been playing in this tournament. I’m just so tired all the time.”

“‘Kawa…” Suga started, “Is everything alright?”

“Yeah...I just...they asked about a renewal...but, I don’t know. The team is great and it’s been fun, but...I’m…” Suga could hear Oikawa’s voice breaking, “I’m just tired, I miss Japan. I miss you. And I’m just so scared, for us. I...I just really miss you.”

“If you miss me so much, why don’t you call me back or reply to my texts?” Suga snapped, regretting his words as soon as they slipped out of his mouth.

It wasn’t just Oikawa’s fault, Suga had been bad at communicating, too, getting wrapped up with graduation and moving and job interviews, but...still. He was hurt, Oikawa hadn’t even replied to his excitement about graduation or the job when Suga texted him.

“Kou-chan…”

“I would like it if you didn’t call me that, right now.”

Koushi . I know you’re upset, but you cannot be just blaming me,” Oikawa hissed, “I’m not the only one of us not communicating. It takes both of us.”

Suga scoffed, “I know that! I just...you haven’t replied to my texts in weeks! I get that you're busy, I get that you live in Buenos Aires, that there’s a twelve hour time difference! I feel like I’m trying, sure I could do better, but I’m getting nothing !”

“I want to! I fucking want to! But I don’t have the time!”

“Don’t have the time for your fucking boyfriend? ” Suga shouted, “If you don’t have time for me, then what’s the point!”

Oikawa was silent on the other line, Suga was crying, he knew Oikawa could hear it. The line went dead, Suga’s phone had died. Suga didn’t bother to charge it. It was another few weeks, a move to Tokyo, and starting a new job, when Oikawa called again. Suga let it go to voicemail.

“I’m sorry, please forgive me. I don’t want this to end, Kou-chan.”

Suga sighed as he walked into his apartment, he loved his students, he really did, but sometimes he wished they would just...be calm. He dropped his bag on the floor and slid off his shoes, curling up onto the couch. He flipped through the TV channels, but there wasn’t anything. He scrolled through his phone, he and Oikawa hadn’t been talking much, even after they managed to patch things up after that fight. He tried to ignore the gnawing feeling in his stomach, that they were just stalling the inevitable. Suga didn’t want to think about it, that this could be the end. He stared at the TV, not really paying attention, his own thoughts swirling through his head. He was making dinner when his phone rang, jolting him out of stupor. Heart beating, he glanced down at who was calling.

Oikawa.

His mouth went dry as he answered it, the gnawing feeling in his stomach growing stronger.

“Hey,” Oikawa’s voice cracked through the phone.

“H-Hey,” Suga replied, turning off the stove, suddenly no longer hungry.

“We...we haven’t talked...in a while.”

“Yeah…”

Suga hated this, it felt too awkward, the silence on the other side of the line made Suga want to cry, it felt like he was barreling towards the end, but he wasn’t ready.

“Are you...alright...with talking? It's...early for you.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. It’s not that early.”

Suga looked over at the clock, it would be six in the morning in Buenos Aires, “A-Are you sure?”

Maybe if he stalled, it wouldn’t happen. The end wouldn’t come and he wouldn’t be crushed.

“Yeah...can we...talk about something?” Oikawa asked, his voice full of nervousness.

Suga swallowed the lump forming in his throat, “Yeah.”

It was silent, neither of them speaking for a moment. Suga was about to ask if Oikawa was still there, when there was a knock on the door.

“Um, there’s someone at the door, uh, hold on,” Suga mumbled.

Gripping the phone tightly to his ear, he walked over to his front door, it was probably Daichi coming over to steal some of his dinner after work, Suga just sighed to himself and opened the door. The phone dropped to the floor with a thud, Suga staring in shock at the person standing in front of him.

“O-Oikawa...what are you...doing here?” Suga said, trying to find the words.

Oikawa gave him a tired smile, “Can I come in?”

Suga just nodded, speechless, opening the door so Oikawa could step in, a duffel bag thrown over his shoulder. He’s...here...he’s really here, in Japan. In my apartment...that’s really him. Oikawa was looking around the apartment, standing in the apartment, the apartment he had only seen a few times on FaceTime. Oikawa was standing in Suga’s apartment, he felt dizzy. Oikawa finally turned to face him.

“What? You’re not gonna give me a hug?” he asked.

Suga was frozen in place for a moment, trying to wrap his head around everything. Tenativately, he took a step forward, then another, until he found himself standing in front of Oikawa. Placing one of his hands on Oikawa’s chest, feeling the solid muscle underneath, he finally spoke.

“You’re...really here…” he whispered.

Oikawa placed his hand on top of Suga’s, “Yeah, I am.”

The tears were falling, now, “What...How...W-what are you...How are you here?” Suga asked, trying to find the words.

“I teleported,” Oikawa replied, “How do you think? I flew for this entire week.”

A hand brushed Suga’s cheeks lightly, wiping away the tears. He finally let himself rest his head on Oikawa’s shoulder, Oikawa’s arms around him into a tight hug. They just stood there, in the embrace, for several moments. They were both crying, quietly.

“We...We still need to talk,” Oikawa mumbled.

Suga pulled away like he had been slapped, “Oh.”

Oikawa looked extremely nervous, There’s no way he flew all the way to Japan to break up with me...right? Suga thought, trying to read Oikawa’s face.

“I, uh, I got a job offer,” Oikawa started, “Here. In Tokyo.”

Suga let the words sink in, “You’re...moving back?”

Oikawa nodded, “I am, I’m coming home.”

“Home,” Suga repeated.

There was a sob, Suga realized it had come from him, he found himself in another embrace, Oikawa holding him tightly. Suga could feel himself trembling as he let the tears fall, Oikawa murmuring softly to him, “Hey, it’s okay, it’s okay. I’m here,” pressing a soft kiss on top of Suga’s head.

“You flew all the way home to tell me about this job offer?” Suga asked, trying to stop the tears.

“No...actually, I have something else I wanna say, I know...I know these past few years were hard for you. The distance and the lack of communication. I can’t even begin to describe how much I missed you. And I...I love you, a lot. I don’t ever want to leave you again. I love you.”

Oikawa broke the embrace, taking a step back. He reached into his pocket, “I want to stay with you, forever. By your side,” he continued, pulling out a small, black box, “Koushi Sugawara, will you marry me?”

He opened the box, a gold ring topped with a diamond sat inside it. Suga slapped a hand over his mouth, his head reeling, the tears that had slowed began to fall again.

“Yes…” Suga breathed, “Yes, Tooru Oikawa, I will marry you.”

Oikawa cracked a bright smile, I missed that smile so much , Suga thought, his hand trembling as Oikawa slid the ring onto his finger. Suga let out a breathless chuckle, cupping Oikawa’s face, pulling him into a kiss. Oikawa wrapped his arms around Suga’s waist, pulling him close. Suga buried his face into Oikawa’s chest, Oikawa resting his chin on the top of his head.

“I love you,” Oikawa whispered.

“I love you, too,” Suga murmured.

“Can I...Can I sit down? I’m exhausted...I came straight here after my flight landed,” Oikawa mumbled.

Suga laughed, “We could just go to bed, it’s late enough for us to sleep.”

“That would be nice.”

Suga woke up the next morning in the arms of Oikawa, to his phone ringing. He groaned, looking at it. It was...Tanaka...he wanted to FaceTime? Oikawa stirred, blinking as he struggled to wake up. Suga broke into a smile as he looked at him, he’s here and he’s staying , he thought, as he pressed a kiss on Oikawa’s forehead.

“Morning.”

Oikawa grumbled, “Your phone is loud.”

Suga sighed, sitting up, Oikawa slithered his way into Suga’s lap, resting his head on Suga’s shoulder, “Who calls this early anyways?”

“Babe, it's eleven in the morning. It’s Tanaka, he wants to FaceTime. He...doesn’t usually. Him and Kiyoko are engaged, it’s probably about the wedding.”

“Answer it, could be important if he’s trying to FaceTime you,” Oikawa mumbled, eyes closed again.

Suga answered the call, running his fingers through Oikawa’s hair. He sat there for a moment, waiting for the call to connect. Suga was greeted with Tanaka’s face, scrunched up and red, he was uncontrollably sobbing.

“Uh, Tanaka, what’s wrong?” Suga asked, immediately concerned.

Tanaka replied with some unintelligible sounds, crying too hard for Suga to understand him. Oikawa was also now staring at the phone, looking concerned. The screen changed and Kiyoko’s face appeared.

“He’s fine,” she said, as if he wasn’t sobbing, “Are you alright? Your eyes look red...were you crying?”

“Um, a little, last night, Kiyoko...he’s definitely not fine, what’s going on?” Suga replied, noticing her eyes were also glassy, like she was holding back tears.

There was another wail, but it didn’t sound like it came from Tanaka, “Asahi...please be quiet, I am on the phone,” Kiyoko said.

“Asahi is there? Is Noya?” Suga asked, “Are they...all crying?”

“Yes, but that’s not important at the moment,” Kiyoko said, turning her attention back to Suga, “Why were you crying? Was it because of Oikawa?”

“Uh, yes, but--”

“I’ll kill him, if he broke up with you, I’m killing him,” she said, voice sharp.

Suga watched from the corner of his eye as Oikawa looked utterly offended and somewhat terrified, he smiled, “Kiyoko...He didn’t break up with me,” showing Oikawa, who just gave a smile.

“Oh my god, oh my god, Tanaka, honey, come here!” Kiyoko shouted.

Tanaka’s face appeared on the screen for a moment, a new wave of sobs came out of him, the screen turned back to Kiyoko, “He’s there?”

“Yes, he is. And...he’s staying, he’s home,” Suga whispered, holding up the hand with the ring on it.

“Oh my god,” she said again, “Oh my god, you’re engaged ?!”

There were several wails and something that sounded vaguely like a congratulations, Suga was really concerned, “Kiyoko, I’m glad you’re happy for me and I’m guessing the guys are, too, but will you please explain why they are all uncontrollably sobbing at eleven in the morning?”

“Oh,” she said, smiling, “I’m pregnant.”

What?! ” both Oikawa and Suga shrieked, “You’re pregnant?! Oh my god, I’m going to be an uncle,” Suga whispered.

He was crying again, so was Oikawa, Kiyoko managed to squeeze herself between Asahi and Tanaka and Suga could see Noya, too, all of them crying and excited, they talked, mainly repeatedly congratulating each other, for another hour, before Kiyoko finally hung up, all agreeing to meet up soon.

“I’m gonna be an uncle,” Suga repeated for the millionth time, staring wide-eyed at Oikawa.

“Yeah, you are,” he replied, pushing some stray hairs out of Suga’s face.

“Wait, no, we are going to be uncles. We are engaged and we are going to be uncles!” Suga screeched, throwing his arms around Oikawa, both of them flopping back onto the bed.

Oikawa laughed, hugging him, “Yeah, yeah we are!”

“Tanaka, you look like you are about to shit yourself,” Daichi said, straightening out Tanaka’s bowtie.

“I am,” Tanaka muttered.

“Please don’t,” Asahi whispered, horrified.

Suga slapped Tanaka on the back and handed him some water, “Take a deep breath, dude. Everything’s gonna be fine.”

Everyone was crowded into the room. Hinata and Kageyama, for once, were not bickering, they were trying to help each other fix their bowties, but making them worse. Nishinoya kept looking at himself in the mirror, grinning, as he spun around in his suit. Tsukishima and Yamaguchi were huddled in the corner, ready to go, just watching everyone else and laughing. Asahi and Daichi kept touching up Tanaka’s suit, making sure he looked his best. Ennoshita, Narita, and Kinoshita were all posing and taking pictures. Suga smiled to himself, it had been a while since they had all been in the same room. Yachi opened the door, beaming in her bridesmaid dress which was a simple pale pink.

“It’s time!” she chirped, before closing the door, again.

It took another five minutes before they left, attempting to calm Tanaka down.

The wedding was gorgeous, roses tied to each bench. It was an outdoor wedding, the sun shining brightly down, not a single cloud in the sky, the day not too hot. A white gazebo, covered in roses, stood at the end of the aisle, Tanaka nervously standing in it. Hinata, Yamaguchi, Ennoshita, Kinoshita, and Noya were standing with Yachi on the bridesmaid side, all beaming. Suga, Daichi, Narita, Asahi, and Tsukishima on the groomsmen side. The music started and everyone stood. As soon as Kiyoko stepped out, in a slim-fitting wedding dress, covered in lace, Tanaka absolutely lost it. Suga would admit he cried, too. The ceremony went smoothly, minus Tanaka practically sobbing as he said his vows, even Kiyoko teared up as she said hers. They were pronounced husband and wife, sharing a kiss. Everyone went nuts, cheering as loudly as they possibly could.

The reception took place in a pavilion not far from where the ceremony was, a similar theme of roses were on each table, covered by white tablecloths and Suga knew it would be ruined by the end of the night. A white canopy covered it, the ceiling of the canopy covered in twinkling fairy lights. Suga leaned on Oikawa’s shoulder as they watched the first dance, Tanaka kept stepping on Kiyoko’s feet, they were giggling the whole time. Eventually, the music was kicked up a notch and everyone was dancing. Oikawa spun Suga around, the two of them laughing.

“Have I mentioned you look absolutely stunning?” Oikawa said, pulling Suga back in.

“A few hundred times,” Suga teased, “I guess you look good, too.”

Oikawa scoffed, “I definitely look better than you.”

Suga pecked a kiss on his cheek, “Uh huh, sure babe.”

They spotted Hinata desperately trying to drag Kageyama onto the dance floor, spinning their way over, Suga grinned.

“C’mon Kageyama!” he yelled, “Dance! Even Tsukishima is dancing!”

Kageyama huffed, Hinata still pulling him, eventually standing. Oikawa and Suga burst into laughter, Kageyama could not dance. Noya, Tanaka, and Asahi were all dancing together now, well, it was more like the three of them holding hands and spinning in a circle. Kiyoko was twirling Yachi around. Even Yamaguchi and Tsukishima were dancing, off to the side. Others were here too, Bokuto was trying to have a dance off with Kuroo, but they both just looked really dumb, flailing like chickens. Akaashi and Kenma were sitting at a table, not too far away, recording them. Oikawa and Suga sat down with them.

“I am embarrassed that I am with him,” Akaashi muttered, downing a glass of champagne.

“This is great blackmail material,” Kenma snickered, zooming in.

Suga laughed as Oikawa placed an arm around his shoulders, mesmerized by Kuroo and Bokuto.

“Chocolate?” someone asked, bending over backwards with a silver tray full of small chocolates.

“T-Tendou?!” Suga and Oikawa said, in unison.

The redhead grinned, “Hiya! Heard about your engagement, congrats! If you need a chocolatier, let me know!”

Suga just nodded, taking a piece from the tray, handing it to Oikawa before taking one for himself. Tendou disappeared back into the crowd.

“Do you think...they invited him?” Oikawa whispered in Suga’s ear.

“Probably not, I think he’s just here. But, this chocolate is really fucking good, babe, we should have him at our wedding,” Suga replied, inhaling the chocolate.

Oikawa just scoffed, before eating his chocolate, “Okay, yeah, this is really good.”

They shared some champagne with Akaashi and Kenma, before going back out onto the dance floor. A slower song started playing, Oikawa pulled Suga close, placing one hand on his waist and taking Suga’s hand in the other, Suga placed his free hand on Oikawa’s shoulder. They swayed and spun around, laughing happily. Suga stared up at Oikawa, breathless. The twinkling lights made him glow, his suit pristine on him.

“Hey,” Suga whiserped, grinning.

“Hey,” Oikawa murmured back.

“We’re gonna have this soon,” Suga said, as they spun again.

Oikawa grinned, “Yeah, we are.”

“I love you, Tooru Oikawa.”

“And I love you, Koushi Sugawara.”
