Chapter 1: Ryder Has A Completely Normal Day

Chapter Text

Sunlight shined through the window as she woke up. A new day had started.

Anne Yuè Ryder got up from her bed.

For more reasons than just it being monday (although definitely also because of that), she considered going back to bed. Ryder, as it happened, was not a morning person.

Reluctantly, she stood up, removing a swathe of hair off her face and opening the window. She then immediately closed it back again upon being hit by the autumn wind. Stupid morning brain, forgetting it was getting colder.

Ryder then shambled to the kitchen to eat. Grandpa wished her a good morning and delivered her a plateful of pancakes, which she eagerly devoured. Grandpa’s pancakes were the best.

Following that, she got herself dressed in her uniform (and conveniently forgot the school’s jacket. She didn’t like the jacket) and left for class. Today, she decided to take the tram. She didn’t often do that, preferring to just transform and get to class through the shadows, which was much easier, but today was a special day, and she wanted to enjoy every bit of it. So she sat down in the tram and let it carry her to class, keeping watch on the girls. She recognized less and less of them every time.

Class ran as usual. Maths, history, then lunch. For a change, Ryder decided to sit with the girls from the team, since Logan said she’d be a bit busy. It wound up being fun: Ellie, Dawn, Chris, Phoebe and Helen had been eating lunch together for the last few weeks, and they welcomed Ryder into the group.

After that, Ryder still had chemistry and PE, and then got to leave class. Since she worked at grandma’s on mondays, she transformed and rushed home, where she put on her apron and got to feeding the many many dogs. A couple was coming to hopefully adopt one, and everything needed to be in top shape. Days like these, Ryder couldn’t help but notice that she had gained a lot more free time since Cyrus had become Team Courier’s manager. That would probably change in a few weeks once she started apprenticing under him, but for now, she could spend a lot more time helping grandma out without worrying about everything related to the team.

After she finished feeding the dogs and cleaning one of the play areas, she got to watch as grandma led around the couple who’d come by. Her job was mostly to make sure the dogs were all on their best behavior, and that she did, even answering some of the couple’s questions. They wound up deciding rather quickly, so while grandma took them to sign the proper papers and the other workers got the rest of the dogs to calm down, Ryder nipped back to their house. She had just enough time for a workout today.

About an hour later, she once more found herself on the shadows, this time heading for Team Courier HQ. Heh. She still got a kick out of reminding herself that she now had an official headquarters for her team. Not bad at all.

Tonight was a rather simple meeting. The newbies were still acclimating to their assigned partners and everyone seemed mostly ok. She might need to have a word with Jasmine later, though. The night’s opening messages didn’t set any particularly troublesome routes, so Ryder sent everyone off with a warning to look out, since there had been more monsters lately, and they all went their ways.

The night was surprisingly calm for Ryder. Lots of messages, lots of chumpy monsters. There had been one small scare, a beginner team having issues with an Assimilegg, but once Ryder teamed up with the girls they managed to dispatch it pretty easily. All in all, she arrived home safely at the end of the night.

Ryder threw herself on her bed, tired, but ultimately satisfied with her own day. Her whole week, really.

Because that’s what today was. Today marked a full week since the end of the situation with Celina.

One whole week without anyone trying to kill her.

Ryder raised her fists into the air, silently commemorating her newfound peace of mind.

Then, too lazy to actually get back up, she kicked the light switch to turn it off and went to sleep.
