Chapter Text

Jaemins eyes were focused on the wooden table as he silently listened to his fathers yapping. Once again, the fae had tried to escape.

Clearly not succeeding.

“Na Jaemin me and your mother have raised you well in this village, haven’t we?” his fathers voice was stern and it sent chills down the pink haired boys spine who didn’t once look up to meet the older mans terrifying gaze. “Humans are dangerous and if you leave our village you will die. We are just trying to keep you safe my son, alright? I understand that it may not be very fun for you here but this is your home.”

“But the older boys get to go out.”

“The older boys?” Jaemins father furrows his brows, confused on who the ‘other boys’ were.

Jaemin nods. “Jaehyun hyung and his friends.”

“Ah, Jaeminie that’s because they’re guards. They leave to collect food and find new resources for our village.”

“Well why can’t I be a guard? I’m just as strong as Jaehyun hyung.”

That sentence alone makes a deep chuckle erupt from his fathers chest, the middle aged man ruffling his sons hair. “One day, Jaemin. When you get to your brothers age you can become a guard.”

“But that’s not for three whole years,” Jaemin pouts, throwing himself back across the couch, his arms spread out in all angles.

“The more you think about it the longer it will take,” his father grinned, ruffling his sons soft hair. “I’m going to go out and check on your brother who should be back by now. Head to bed.”

“I’m not tired.”

“Well go to your room and sleep when you are tired but don’t stay up too late,” his father says, standing up from his seat and making his way to the old wooden door, pushing it open. “Your mother should be home soon as well.”

Jaemin nods. “Okay, see you in the morning.”

“G’night.”

Once the door closed Jaemin made his way towards his cramped bedroom, falling on the bed and sighing into the sheets that desperately needed washing. They didn’t have a lot of supplies out here and it isn’t like they could buy anything and get it shipped over. The faeries were around 7cm in height and were kept a secret from the rest of the world, they couldn’t just go out in the open and get a human to make tiny things for them, they had to do it themselves. Their village was hidden from the rest of the world, no humans were able to see it. It was like a border surround their village; if humans go near something kicks into their brain and they decide to turn around, not even having the chance to capture the village in their eyesight.

The strawberry haired boy snuggled into the thin blanket, the cold sending shivers down his body. Here in the village they didn’t have much to provide them warmth which is why Jaemin often crept to his older brothers room to sleep with him to cuddle for warmth and he was glad Jaehyun didn’t mind.

The boy who lied about not being tired was just about to doze off into a deep slumber when heavy knocks from his window awoke him. Jaemin groaned as sat up in his bed, eyes half open as they went over to the window where he saw two figures. He couldn’t see their faces due to the dark but he knew exactly who they were anyway.

He got himself out of bed and stumbled over to the window, pulling it open. “Lee Donghyuck, Zhong Chenle. Get the fuck off my lawn.”

“But Jaemin hyung~“ Chenle whines, grabbing the olders arm and shaking it. “Me and Donghyuck hyung want you to play with us.”

“It’s like.. Midnight,” Jaemin says in disbelief, shaking his head. “I’m tired as fuck I don’t want to play tonight.”

“Please!” Chenle whines even louder this time and Jaemin can’t take it.

“Jeez, fine,” Jaemin says and Chenle lets out a loud cheer. “Come on let’s go!”

“What if my father and brother come back to check on me?”

Chenle shrugs. “Just hope they won’t. We won’t be out too long this time anyway.”

“Okay,” Jaemin grabs his jacket off of the floor and slides it on, climbing out of the window and nearly falling on Donghyuck while doing so, the tan male pushing him away with a shake of the head.

“This way,” Chenle leads both of them from behind the house and into the open.

“Where are we going?” Jaemin whispers to Donghyuck who he was walking next to and receives a shrug in response.

The three best friends continue walking with the youngest leading the way and the two older boys following closely behind, one of their heads darting around their surroundings every few seconds to make sure they aren’t being seen.

Chenle stops when they’ve gotten into an isolated spot, just by the edge of the border. The trio often came to areas like this so they could see what was happening outside the border without actually leaving it. They were in awe of the huge scenery and the large forest animals that couldn’t see their village. Knowing that they were safe in the border was a huge benefit.

They all sat down in a small triangle and Jaemin stretched his arms up, letting out a yawn. “What was the point of coming here?”

“Okay so,” Chenle clasped his hands together, a huge grin on his face as he eyed both of his friends. “Earlier today, this morning I think, I came here alone. I wanted some peace from all the other annoying faeries in the village so I came here and I decided to look out the border and you’d never believe what I saw.”

Donghyuck rolls his eyes, playing with the dirt beneath him. “A frog? again?”

“No it was way better this time!”

“Let me guess.. A cicada?”

“Ew,” Chenle looks at him in disgust. “I’d run away in fear if I saw a cicada. Good thing those can’t get into our village because they look like giant monsters.”

“They are giant monsters,” Jaemin nods in agreement. “They look absolutely disgusting and terrifying.”

“I know right-“

“Zhong Chenle,” Donghyuck interrupts, glaring daggers at the blonde boys face, clearly impatient. “What did you see?”

“Oh, right!” Chenle had totally forgotten the story he was telling. He was too engrossed in talking about cicadas with Jaemin. “Okay so I was just sitting here, thinking about that frog I saw the other day, hoping it would come back. I ran my finger through my oh so silky hair and-“

“ZHONG CHENLE!” Donghyuck interrupts once again.

Jaemin smacks Donghyucks side. “He was getting to the good part!”

“He’s taking ten years and describing each and every one of his movements,” Donghyuck says, tongue poking the inside of his cheek. He then turns to stare at Chenle. “Just tell us what you saw.”

Chenle rolls his eyes. “Fine. I was sitting here and I heard loud noises from outside the border and looked up and I saw a human and not just any human; this one was hot as FUCK. His hair was like, a dark shade of blonde blonde and he was hella tall-“

“Of course he’s tall he’s a human,” Donghyuck hisses. “You can’t seriously find a human attractive.”

“Why not? They look like us but with no wings and plain clothing.”

“Because it is against our nature. Oh, and have you ever thought about what would happen if you fell in love with a human?”

Chenle frowns. “I wouldn’t fall in love with one I was just calling that one attractive. Humans can’t even see our village and we can’t ever leave our village so I’ll never meet one even if I want to.”

“But-“

Jaemin clears his throat and the two arguing boys looked over to the pink haired who was standing up. “I’m tired, I’m going to go back to bed. I’ll see you both tomorrow.”

“Bye hyung!”

———

Jaemin crept around the back of the mushroom house and crept in through his little window, sighing in relief after making no noise. He shut his window but it still felt awfully cold making his lips curve down into a frown.

He ushered his jacket off and combed through his messy hair with his fingers. Jaemin crawled into bed and let out a groan after realising how cold it was. The boy shivered and pulled his blanket up further to try and warm himself up but it was no use. He slithered out of bed and dragged his blanket with him, pushing his door open which resulted in a creak.

He made his way down the short and narrow hallway to his older brothers bedroom and when he got there he knocked a few times on the door. He heard a deep ‘come in’ in response and he did as he was told, pushing open the door and entering.

“You okay Jaeminie?” Jaehyun asks. He knew what Jaemin wanted so he moved further to one side of the bed and lifted his blanket, letting his younger brother slide in, the two of them sharing their two blankets.

“Just cold,” Jaemin rests his head in the crook of Jaehyuns neck. He knew not all siblings could have a close bond like the two of them and Jaemin knew he was awfully lucky to have a brother like Jaehyun who allowed his hugs and always welcomed him in with warm arms, enjoying having deep and comforting talks.

Jaehyun nods, raking a hand through his brothers hair. “Sleep well little bro.”
