Work Text:

“honey, i’m home!” keigo called out with a flourish and tired little chuckle as he hung his coat up by the door in your shared apartment. he looked around the living room, hearing the soft thrum of music come from down the hall. he followed the sound, finding you in the kitchen, humming as you stirred together some ingredients (something sweet, by the looks of it). you hadn’t noticed him, guard open and currently pouring your heart out into your whisk which was covered in some sort of batter.

and of course, like the little shit he was, keigo decided he was going to scare you. you had yet to even turn your head in the direction of the doorway. and so like a bastard, he used his ridiculous amount of training to sneak up on you, grabbing you around your waist and making you drop your whisk, making sure it landed in the bowl when it clattered down as you let out a loud gasp and only a momentary struggle, before relaxing into his arms.

then you immediately revved up again, turning around to lightly bonk him on the head for his trouble and then properly twisting around in his arms to wrap your own arms around his neck, going in for a soft kiss.

“scared the shit outta me, kei! nearly hit you with the whisk, but then i would get cake batter in your hair.” you murmured with a warm grin. “you’re home early.” you noted.

“yeah, i finished all my paperwork, easy. why’re you baking?” he grinned as you ran your hands through his windswept hair, pushing it back from his forehead for you to lay a kiss there.

“i dunno, just got a craving to bake. it’s vanilla, but i picked up chocolate icing and sprinkles.” you turned around gently, returning to your whisking.

“be a dear and get a pan.” you said quietly. you felt his arms leave your waist, and him nudge over to the cabinet to pull one out, setting it next to the bowl you were using. you moved to go get the spray oil for the pan, and you saw keigo out of the corner of your eye, stick his finger in the batter. you immediately turned around to swat him with a laugh.

“naughty bird, you gotta be patient!” you said through giggles as you watched him duck from your swat.

“but i’m excited! you mean to deny your poor boyfriend just the tiniest bit of cake batter?” he quipped, laughing along with you.

this moment was soft. you remember when there weren’t moments like this— not that long ago but still, it felt so far away. keigo had made a divot in your heart and curled himself up inside, and now you couldn’t imagine yourself without him. three years tomorrow— since he had asked you on a date. you had thought he was joking at first, but he took you above the city, into the sky, and showed you musutafu from above. it was gorgeous, and as much as you wanted to rid yourself of the lunch he had just taken you to, you couldn’t tell if it was from your dangling feet or your rapidly beating heart.

it was a type of warmth that you hadn’t ever really felt before. you wanted to devote your time and energy to a relationship with this man, you wanted to make him happy, to see him smile. you wanted to give him a kiss before work and send him off with well wishes, and receive him with open arms at the end of whatever awful shift they had him on. and yes, he had to keep it relatively secret, but you were okay with that as long as he had you. as long as you had him.

you didn’t think twice before you were pulling him into a deep kiss, wrapping your arms around his shoulders and pouring all your love into him, trying to show him just how much he meant to you. he tasted like vanilla cake batter.

“i love you, angel,” you repeated it to him until he kissed you to stop your murmuring.

“i love you too, baby. is this about our anniversary tomorrow?” he smiled wide, and you melted.

“partially. i just really like you, too.” you gave him one last squeeze before shaking your head and turning to the pan.

“now, we gotta get this damn thing in the oven before i jump you again.” you both giggled, and you paused just early enough to listen to the tail end of his, that warmth curling up in your chest again.

and the ring hidden in your dresser drawer called to you like a magnet.
