Our shoulders brushed as we hit the controller buttons as fast as we could.
“I am going to annihilate you at this,” I warned him, navigating my character’s car around obstacles and picking up a mystery item.
“As if, nerd,” he scoffed, using a star to gain immunity from the shells being fired at him.
“Oi,” I shoved him with my shoulder, causing him to go off balance and run off the track.
He scowled playfully. “Hey, not fair, stop!”
I laughed, now able to zoom ahead of him, crossing the finish line in first while he struggled behind me and made third place.
Jumping up, I whooped. “In your FACE! I WON!”
He smiled, pretending to be angry. “Yeah, but I won the rest of them.”
I shook my head, flipping my hair and sitting back down gracefully, our legs bumping. My heart rate leapt but I pretended not to react.
The next few rounds passed quickly, my heart hammering at his closeness. After three full grand prix of him completely decimating me, I tossed the controller aside. “I won.”
He cast an incredulous look my way. “I’m pretty sure that’s me up there in first.”
I shook my head, “You weren’t even playing, who are you again?”
He laughed and put his controller down, picking up his phone. Curious, I leaned in to see what he was doing. Ever so gently, he rested his cheek on my head. I tried to calm my heart but it raced away anyway. It was from his roommate, but I didn’t even pay attention to what it said. My focus was entirely on his breathing.
Slowly, we leaned back and he put his hand on my knee. By this point, I was sure my heart was going to beat out of my ribcage.
“What should we do now?” he asked, both of us so conscientious of being so near to each over. “More games, or what? Youtube?”
I nodded, my heart pounding somewhere in the region of my throat. “Yes—yes, that sounds fine.”
He grabbed the TV remote and flipped to Youtube, scrolling through the suggested videos. Readjusting, he pulled me closer and held on more tightly to my leg. “What do you want to watch?” I was vaguely paying attention to the various things he was showing me, but mostly I was just trying to calm myself with the cuddles I was receiving. “How about this channel? They’re prank calling people.”
I agreed. “Yes, sure, that’s great.”
He selected the video then settled back. My eyes stayed on the screen, but my mind was on the boy holding me close. The boy with soft, amazing hair. The boy with dazzling blue-green eyes. The boy who was currently trying to commit a crime and steal my heart.
We both looked at each other simultaneously, pausing when we met each other’s eyes. Then, recognizing how close we were, we both looked away, and my heart skipped one, maybe two beats.
“They actually got hold of someone,” he pointed at the screen. “Took them long enough.”
I nodded, not quite sure what actually was going down on the video.
“You know, yesterday I just really felt like I wanted to go on an adventure or something, climb a mountain,” he commented, leaning back to look at me with his sparkling eyes.
My eyes widened, the revelation of his spontaneity flooring me. “You mean, you just randomly want to go on adventures for no reason?”
He nodded, smiling. “All the time.”
I stared at him, completely smitten, my heart racing, my insides turning to mush at the sight of him. After a moment, he hesitated then leaned in, giving me a kiss.
Letting out a small gasp, I tried to hide my blush. Unsuccessful, I hid my face, then kissed him back. We grinned at each other, then settled back, his arm around me, my head against his chest. Somehow, I knew this was going to work out well.
