Pride and Prejudice

Summary:

It is revealed that Ergoth isn't working alone.

After a Kitsune hunt brings up old memories, the stitches and duct tape that the Winchester brothers used to repair their brotherly bond over the years become more apparent. In a moment of weakness and arguing over freedom of choice. Ergoth and Belphagor make their move, along with Ergoth talking to Sam and planting what had seemed to be the first seed; it seems the two demons are better than expected at this new game. Throughout the days, planting seeds throughout the story in order to guide the Winchester brothers in the direction that they need to go. The direction that will put Sam in his rightful place on the throne.

TW: Dean uses a method of manipulation in this piece known as 'Gaslighting' if you are sensitive to the subject please read with caution.

Notes:

- Ergoth uses They/Them pronouns, I apologize if I mess up on their pronouns anywhere throughout the fic.
- Belphagor uses He/Him pronouns in this fic.

Chapter 1: Politics and Preparation

Chapter Text

Ergoth had been born of a human soul, not too long ago. They understood what it was to be a demon, and they came as corrupt as demons come. However Ergoth couldn’t lie, they had a soft side. They were only unsure of where this soft side came from. Whether it be from their recent loss of humanity or their devotion to what was promised.
When Ergoth finally got off of the rack they were promised to be positioned under the most prestigious of armies, Crowley really sold that one. Their resentment for Crowley was unmatched to their resentment towards Kipling, Ergoth almost wished for Crowley’s return. Hell’s politics were complicated, but Ergoth knew they needed a leader. From what Ergoth had seen, nobody was capable of the job. Belphagor had a different idea, Belphagor had this obsession with the Winchesters, oddly enough he first rooted for Jack Kline to take the throne, this changed later on.
Ergoth never understood Belphagor’s motives, but the two began to commune, to talk about the future of Hell even under what was soon to be Kipling’s rule. Belphagor wanted the power to himself initially but eventually settled, understanding that he would never be ready for that.
When Ergoth learned of Sam Winchester, it was almost as if they heard another demon say his name on the wisp of what seemed to be a whimper. Ergoth communed with Belphagor who told her the story of the mighty Winchesters, the vessels of Lucifer and Michael. As far as Ergoth was concerned, Lucifer was irrelevant, the archangel had become foolish and petty given his time in the cage from what they had seen. However, Sam Winchester, he was untapped potential.
Belphagor had moved on from Jack Kline at this point, he accepted Jack was meant for more Holy things than the throne of Hell. When Kipling was dead, there was celebration of cheers throughout Hell. However a solemness for they would never have a leader as long as Sam Winchester walked the earth.
Ergoth had noticed throughout the sea of demons, some were convinced that his decree that the throne remain empty was almost a claim to the throne. They observed the demons for some time, and found out that many of them longed for a true ruler. The Princes of Hell were dead, Crowley gone and pathetic, Lucifer a mad man, but the Boy King, he remained strong and amongst men. Pretending to be one of them.
Belphagor had been observing the Winchester for a few weeks after the death of Kipling, and he had been waiting for Sam Winchester to be alone. Unfortunately the brothers had more of a codependency than either of them could have seen coming. From studying the Winchesters Belphagor became aware that the brothers had done things out of pocket for each other. The amount of times Ergoth heard the demons gossiping about how the Winchesters had returned to Hell for business had proved that.
Eventually Sam had finally slowed down with his group of hunters, and he and Dean after returning from the Michael scenario had been on a case with just the two of them. Ergoth and Belphagor could easily get Sam Winchester to a place to talk to him alone. It was time to strike, it was time to provoke the Boy King.

It had been decided that Ergoth was the better out of the two to begin to sway Samuel, they couldn’t hold Dean at bay for too long. While confident against a human they both understood the immaturity of the Winchester duo, and were sure that as soon as Dean came to, shall he need it he would pray for help immediately. To deal with the Nephilim was something both of the demons wanted to avoid.
The Winchesters appeared to be hunting a Kitsune, which seemed to bring up a squabble between the two at a few points. Belphagor mentioned that the books told about an Amy Pond. He described the situation, Amy’s death, and how it drifted the brothers apart in a way that could never be completely healed. The more Ergoth learned about these Winchesters the more they realized, Dean Winchester only had Samuel by a thread. How long would it take Belphagor and Ergoth to convince the younger of the Winchester duo that he had potential beyond Dean Winchester. It frustrated both of the demons, with how much of a grip Dean Winchester had on their so-called ‘Team Free Will’. To tell you the truth, Ergoth wasn’t sure with the older Winchester around that their group had free will.
Belphagor had been keeping tabs on the Winchester brothers, at this point, while Ergoth searched for Jacob Pond. Should Dean Winchester get in the way of their plans, they could simply call the young Kitsune to dispose of him. As Belphagor described it, Jacob Pond would have been elated to assist with the removal of the older brother. After finding what they wanted, Ergoth and Belphagor communed again. They agreed it would be best to deal with capturing Samuel after the brothers deal with the Kitsune.
Ergoth prayed that night, they didn’t know why they did it, they didn’t know who they were praying to. They supposed stability in Hell and greatness of demons was important to themself. In reality, Ergoth was scared. They were aware that Hunters viewed demons like they were stains on the plane of reality. Ergoth didn’t blame them, from what they had seen, without a leader demons were awful. Not in only regards to morality, no, in competence too; Ergoth didn’t know which was worse.
Belphagor alerted them a few hours after their prayer, the Winchesters were done with the Kitsune.
