Work Text:
“So, we’re going to need someone to spearhead this fundraiser/dance. Would there be anyone who’d like to volunteer?”
Enthusiastically you raise your hand, followed by a apathetic hand raise of your other coworker.
“I’d be happy to volunteer!” Truly this was right up your lane. Levi’s eyes traces over you, and his eyebrow raises slightly. “Someone else needs to make sure things go smoothly. “I’ll help.”
Erwin gives a polite smile signifying his agreement. “Great then I’ll leave you two to work over the details. Get back with me a plan as soon as possible. Meeting adjourned.”
You were excited, elated even to begin planning. You miss the frown painting the face of a certain brunette.
As everyone begins to shuffle out of the conference room, Levi approaches you immediately.
“Follow my lead and we wont have a shit show. I’ll start organizing the catering, and you-“
“Aw come one Levi, (Y/N) always gets the job done! Isn’t that right?” Hanji’s arm slung around your shoulders pulling you closer to them. They were always clingy, not that you mind when it’s them. You grin jabbing them in the rib.
“Thank you! Someone understands my work ethic. Besides with Levi and I working together it’s impossible for this to go off the rails.”
You both begin to giggle and joke around, much to Levi’s chagrin. “Say, what if I help you guys! I can take up decorations, plus I’m taller then both of you so I’ll be able to-“
“Not a chance in hell Hanji. If left to you nothing would get done and then it’d really be a shit show.” It was clear he was already irate and over it. “(Y/N) lets go we have work to get done.”
Levi always take charge and it’s hard not to follow in his steps. You give Hanji a sheepish shrug and begin to follow. You mouth silently, “Sorry Hanj, we’ll catch up later!”
Your back turned to Hanji, you miss as the bright smile slides off their face, leaving them dejected and brooding.
One month of planning and several breakdowns later the event was really coming together! There wasn’t much of a budget so a lot of decoration was left to you and Levi amongst a few other.
Hanji wasn’t really supposed to be there, but after numerous times of being kicked out and returning they were put to work. Hanji was always fun to be around, and the time passes faster with their presence.
“So (Y/N) what did you plan on wearing to the the event?” Your focus mostly remains on keeping the ladder steady. You peer up at them with question in your eyes. “You know, we’ve been so busy planning I haven’t really thought of it. I hate wearing heels but a dress would be nice. I don’t really know.”
A chuckle escapes them while taping a balloon to the wall. “You’ll probably look nice regardless. You always look nice.” A flush takes over at their compliment. “Thanks Hanji.”
“Speaking of the dance, are you going with anyone? We could ride together if you want to, I’d think it’d be fun!” Your heart flutters at the question. Like a date? Or just as friends. Reality sinks in faster then you want it too.
“Sorry but, I have to arrive early to help get everything setup.” You can feel the disappointment settling over both of you. “Oh. Well you’ll save a dance for me wont you?”
Anxiety rushes over you swiftly. People dance at dances, don’t they.
Shit.
You lick your lips and answer hesitantly. “Uh, I’ll try.” Their face falls and you suddenly feel worse. As Hanji descends the ladder, they scratch the back of their neck nervously. “Well I better get back to my desk. See you later (Nickname).
They leave so quickly you wonder if you’d upset them. You turn back to the discarded balloons gathering the rest of them.
Levi has been watching from the corner the entire time.
“While also wasting time... they’re both really fucking stupid.”
The fundraiser comes quickly and you find yourself ripping and running. Somehow you were managing it all. Food, music, if it’d was up to Levi you’d valet as well. You were given a clipboard and checklist, and currently everything was going pretty smoothly. The donation goal was close to being met. Everyone seemed happy and content, you’d say the event was a success.
“You look really nice!” You damn near jump out of your skin. Turning around your eyes widen, astonished. “Hanji! You look so nice!” Gripping the clipboard at your side you quickly took their hand. Squealing you jump up and down in excitement.
Warm arms wrap around you almost lifting you off the ground. “You look just as amazing!” You both step back and admire each other. “So, are you done for the night? I was going to suggest the DJ play a song. Did you know that I can do the worm.”’
To be honest you didn’t really want to dance. It feels awkward and intrusive, like others are judging you. “Hanji...I’m not really the dancing type.”
“Ok (Y/N) I’ll see you later.”
They left, you really didn’t have time to explain yourself. Your hearts sinking in on itself.
“I’m sorry Hanji....”
With a deep sigh you turn back to your clipboard.
Levi’s watching. To be fair Levi is always watching, and obviously judging.
“You really are a goddamn idiot.”
You hear his footsteps before you can turn around. Without recognizing his presence you feel the clipboard being snatched out of your hand.
“You’re dismissed, go.”
“Huh?”
With a huff and roll of his eyes Levi gestures you over to Hanji.
“I said go. You’re dismissed for the night, have fun.” Staring at Levi incredulously he gestures toward Hanji before giving you a little nudge. With a silent stare and nod you head toward them.
Moblit and Hanji are sitting off to themselves talking and agreeing amongst themselves.
“Hey guys, what are you up to?”
You see them both stare at each other before looking away. It feels tenses, you don’t like that.
“I’ll talk to you later Hanji. See you later (Y/N).” You both wave him away as you take a seat next to Hanji. “Well, this feels...odd.” You scratch the back of your neck nervously. Somethings not right.
Hanji takes a large gulp before turning towards you. “Are you avoiding me? It feels like I’ve done something to you.”
You’re heart jumps at the statement feeling taken aback.
No. I’d never avoid you.
You lick your lips feeling nervous. “No. What makes you say that Hanji?” With a deep breath they lean against you, seeking your comfort. “All night, all night I just wanted to hang out with you. It feels like you’re avoiding me. Are you?”
You feel like shit. The last thing you’d want to do is hurt someone so close you. You’d do anything for Hanji. Even if it means swallowing your pride.
“I’m not a dancer. Hell, I’m really not a party person.” You rub your arm nervously. “I jumped at the prospect of organizing this event to get out of being a inactive participant. Parties and dancing are scary, I don’t really like it.”
You let out a deep breath looking at Hanji. You can see the cogs turning in their head. Trying to process what you’ve just said. It’s now or never to correct this, you need to let them know how important they are to you.
With a deep breath you stand up and straighten out your clothes. Staring them in the face you extend your hand out to them.
“Hanji. Come dance with me.”
The words have left now. You feel flustered and sensitive to the potential rejection.
Please say yes.
They jump up sporadically grasping your hand firmly.
“Are you sure?! I didn’t know all that, I wasn’t trying to make you uncomfortable!”
You smile back gently at them. “It’s okay. With you I don’t feel uncomfortable.” You’re not sure where this boldness comes from but you feel both confident and bashful. Without a seconds notices you’re whisked away to the dance floor. The song is slow and nostalgic and it quickly becomes evident neither of you know what you’re doing.
“Do you want me to lead?”
“Hanji, do you even know how to lead?”
“I don’t know, you just wing it!”
You laugh. This fun, spending time with Hanji is always fun. You wrap your arms around their shoulders indicating for them to leads. They wrap their arms around you and you both sway to the rhythm.
You both rock together before Hanji whispers into your ear. “I’ve been wanting to dance with you all night. I’m really glad we can spend time together like this. Thank you (Y/N), for dancing with me. I’ll remember this moment always.
Heat floods your cheeks so quickly. You rest your head against them. This is nice. You could get used to their arms wrapped around you.
BONUS:
Levi stands off to the side watching as you two dance together. Ervin joins his side to revel at the sight.
“Those two would make a nice couple. I don’t ever think I’ve seen Hanji this camp.”
Levi scoffs but is more than aware he’s right. “Which one do you think is going to confess first? (Y/N) is dense as bricks and four eyes can’t summon up the courage to confess.”
Erwin smiles and gives a brief nod. “Well I guess we have another charity event to complete.” Levi nods in agreement and a silence settles over them. Erwin speaks in a monotone faishon but with earnest intent.
“Please stop Hanji from breakdancing before all fundings are pulled.”
“On it.”
Hanji and reader are both dumbasses pining. Once again Hanji I’m always free HMU! Welp this pretty much took and entire weekend. I hope you’ve enjoyed it. Have a great week!
