Jane & Roxy Get Stuck In An Elevator

Summary:

Each individual button gleamed quietly in its setting on the wall, shining, taunting the two of them quietly. Yes, you could certainly press one of the perfectly circular metal buttons inside the CrockerCorp elevator, you could watch the little light surrounding it glow bright red, a burning indicator of activity, and you could hope it moved... but, against your desires, the elevator would remain staunchly between floors 12 and 13, right in the middle, stuck where it was. You could, in fact, go even further, as Roxy did, and press literally every single button after hitting the emergency one, just for lack of thing to do, although eventually some internal mechanism would cause every light to go off at once, wherupon she would press them again. And again. And again.

Work Text:

And again. And again.

"I don't think they will stop turning off, Roxy, darling." Jane replied, quietly fanning herself with a small paper fan she had located in her purse. There was some degree of air conditioning in the elevator, somehow, making sure it wasn't absolutely sweltering, but it was still being stuck in a small, confined place with her best friend, and the temperature was slowly beginning to rise. The air conditioner was not meant to handle the doors being shut for this long, after all, and it was chugging overtime, situated quietly under a panel in the ceiling of the elevator, humming quietly. And then humming a little louder.

Roxy sighed and flicked her head over her shoulder. "Yeah, but the LEDs are pretty and I don't have anything better to do. It's not like we have reception in here, right? Lmao." She whined quietly, performing a new different pattern on each shiny button every time they flicked off. First it was snaking up and down each column, then snaking left and right on each row, and so on, every time a new sequence of pressing the elevator buttons and playing their unique little chimes. She started quietly playing the riff to "Funkytown" on the buttons, memorizing every single note, humming along quietly to it before swirling her way to the center in her quest to hit every button again.

The mirrored elevator reflected and refracted both of them infinitely in all directions, with the only interruption being the quiet wood paneling that each of the buttons were set within, paneling that extended up a little higher in order to show off an old fashioned, dial-like display. It had the strange sense of old-meets-new that a lot of the architectural features within the CrockerCorp Head Office possessed - far too many statues and gargoyles on the interior, particularly in the lobby, 60s style wood paneling on everything, ceilings painted to look like a night sky, with a full view of every major constellation (regardless of how impossible that was in a single sky). It was certainly a strange place to be.

"Is that "Funkytown"?" Jane asked, continuing to fan herself quietly. The only audible sounds besides their light breathing was the gentle swish-swish-swish of her fan cutting through the air as inefficiently as possible, blowing wind across her face, making her arm a little sore. "And did you just say "luh-mao" out loud?"

"Yes, and yes." Roxy replied, matter-of-factly. To demonstrate, she got half-way through a second playing of the opening synth riff of "Funkytown" on the elevator buttons before a long, narrow metal bar pierced through the small crack between the elevator doors, prying them quickly open, revealing the interior of the flooring of the thirteenth floor at about hip-height to Roxy. "Oh, hey there, Mr. Crocker!"

"Hi, Dad!" Jane greeted, waving politely towards him as the fire-fighter continued to crowbar the doors open until they opened a gap large enough for Roxy and Jane to fit through.
