Work Text:

Slamming shut your car door with more force than necessary, you let out a long sigh that you had been holding in all day. Your supervisor had decided to assign a new case to you and it was far from pretty. The children involved were, unfortunately, a product of their environment and were now facing a multitude of juvenile charges and your company was contracted for in-home safety checks. Child welfare isn’t a pretty field, but at the end of the day you knew that you were doing whatever you could to better the lives of others, which made it worth it.

You started the car and eagerly reversed from your fourth floor parking spot, speeding down the ramp of the parking garage. Thoughts of dinner being made and a movie night with your lovers was the only thing that had kept you sane while at work. It was rare for you to be done so early, so you had sent Matsukawa a text a few hours ago letting him know that your plans could be moved up. He responded with a goofy selfie of himself and Hanamaki, claiming that they couldn’t wait to see you. You immediately set the picture as your phone background before continuing to answer the boatload of emails you had received.

The soothing sounds of Hozier carried you home as you lightly hummed along, tapping along to the beat on the steering wheel. You were thankful that traffic wasn’t too heavy, because city driving wasn’t always your favorite thing. Sendai was a beautiful city, and having lived in Miyagi your entire life you were glad to have the comfort and familiarity the capital brought you. Reflecting back on it, you were still in awe of your current relationship status and how it had come to be.

  • 8 years ago (2012), Miyagi Prefecture Qualifiers, Aoba Johsai vs Karasuno High, Set 3

“And that’s the end of the match, Karasuno High wins over Aoba Johsai 26-24.”

“What an absolutely intense last set, and with so much passion and effort on both sides of the net!”

You sat in shock at the sight before you, one team heartbroken and one team excited. After a tense first two sets, your best friend and his team had lost to Karasuno and their powerful orange haired middle blocker. Allowing your eyes to wander to the other side of the net, you watched as your best friend, Kyoutani Kentarou, stood before his team with his head bowed and a grimace on his face. As the crowd began to disperse for snacks before the next match, you bounded down the steps and to the railing right in front of the team banner. A few disgruntled looks didn’t stop you as the team bowed and thanked you all for watching them, tears in their eyes and running down their faces.

Kyoutani saw you then, and raised a hand to signal you down to the court. You were hesitant to approach him, and the team in general, due to the events that had just happened. It was the last game the third years would ever play in high school, and knowing Kyoutani’s respect for Iwaizumi and the mistakes he made, you knew that he would be taking it personally. You made your way down and stopped a few feet from where the team was speaking to the Karasuno coach.

“Hey.” A deep voice spoke in front of you, causing you to jump out of your daze. “You came.”

“Hey yourself. You did great out there,” you responded, glancing up at the honey brown eyes staring down at you. “I’m so proud of you guys no matter what the outcome, especially you.”

He stared down at you with an impassive look on his face, before stepping forward and shocking you with a hug. Your arms quickly wrapped around him in a protective grip, knowing that words weren’t enough for him. Tonight isn’t going to go well if he’s hugging me, especially in public . A cough from behind you both ended the moment, and the grumpy faced boy you had known for 16 years was back.

“Well, who would’ve thought he could be friendly?” Oikawa said, attempting to lighten the mood of the team. The waver in his voice did nothing to help him, however. “Is this the one you’ve been hiding from us, Mad Dog-chan?”

He grunted in response before stepping away from you and crossing his arms. You cracked your knuckles before reaching out your hand and introducing yourself to the brown haired boy in front of you. Nodding to the rest of the team, you informed the blonde haired boy that you would be out in the hallway waiting for him. Your eyes drifted towards the two third years standing off to the side, one with dark brown curls and the other with short light brown almost pink hair. Now is not the time to hit on someone, seriously. They’re clearly in a state of shock and pain

After 30 minutes the sound of footsteps had you glancing up from your spot on a bench, legs crossed underneath you. The pink haired boy from before approached you, hands shoved deep in his pockets. Lifting a hand towards you, he stopped next to you and cleared his throat.

“Uh, hey,” he spoke, his voice velvety and smooth. “Kyo said he’d be out soon. Well, he didn’t really say that so much as grunt it in acknowledgment to my question.”

“You were asking about me, hmm?” You raised an eyebrow, eliciting a laugh from the boy.

“Yeah, sure. I’m Hanamaki Takhiro,” he replied, reaching out his hand to meet yours with a slight bow. “Pleasure to meet you, officially at least.”

“Nice to meet you, Hanamaki-san.”

“Oh no need for formalities, that makes me feel like my dad.”

The two of you shared a laugh as the rest of the team trickled out of the locker room, varying faces of shock, sadness and anger on their faces. Oikawa had narrowly dodged a smack in the head from the team’s ace, Iwaizumi Hajime, calling the boy with the spiked hair by his nickname. If there was one thing Oikawa Tooru was good at besides volleyball, it was giving nicknames to everyone he encountered.

“Hey Makki, we’re getting ready to get on the bus to drop our stuff off before heading to the ramen restaurant.” Said the dark haired boy who had held your gaze in the gym. He bowed towards you before adjusting the strap of his gym bag. “I’m Matsukawa Issei, but feel free to call me Mattsun. Formalities are for old people.”

“You sound just like your buddy, Makki was it? Uh, is it okay if I call you that?” You questioned, shouldering your bag as a sullen looking boy pushed past his teammates to approach you.

“Uh, yeah, absolutely.” Makki stuttered, a light blush passing his face as he glanced at the ground. “Are you and Kyoutani coming with us to the restaurant?”

You shook your head in response, offering a small smile instead. You knew that he would refuse to go with the team, instead choosing to close himself off and blame everything on himself. Thankfully you would be there to ensure that it didn’t get to be too much for him.

“Um, anyways, I gotta get going before Kenta over there burns a hole into your guys’ backs. It was nice to meet you guys, and I’m sorry about the game. But you guys did really well, especially that initial spike Makki. Your blocks looked strong too, Mattsun.”

The two boys thanked you, clearing their throats and willing away the heat in their faces. Stepping around them you approached your moody friend, ducking as Iwaizumi threw a volleyball at Oikawa’s head. The first years, Kindaichi and Kunimi, stood to the side and watched the scene their senpais had made and looked as though they wished the floor would swallow them whole. You turned around to wave back at the boys you had talked to before stepping out the door with your arm in Kyotani’s.

Later that night as you sat on your bed, you suddenly woke up to the pinging of your phone. Being careful not to jostle the sleeping Kyotani, you grabbed the phone from your nightstand and unlocked it. A text message from an unknown number stared back and you couldn’t help the smile that unconsciously bloomed on your face.

-- hey, it’s makki. uh, the one with the brown that looks pink hair. just wanted to say thanks for ur encouragement earlier, it meant a lot

-- ur welcome, glad i could help. how did u get my number?

-- oh mattsun and i told kyo that we’d only go and say hi if he gave us ur number. probably not the best time to admit it but ur pretty cute. kind of a nice refresher after that shitty match lol

-- hmm, sounds a bit fuckboy-ish but i’ll always take a compliment, especially from someone like u. kyo and i are heading to bed but i’ll talk to u more tmrrw?

-- oh yeah, i guess i didn’t realize how late it was. can u tell him that we’re proud of him, even though things were tense between the team?

-- will do. night, strawberry shortcake. i’m channeling my inner oikawa and saving that as ur contact name lol

-- i’ve heard worse haha. talk to u tmrrw, sweet dreams

Little did you know that the short conversation you had with Hanamaki would lead to you becoming extremely close with him and Matsukawa, much to Kyoutani’s dismay. However, he was never one to stand in the way of your happiness and eventually got over it. Text conversations turned into group chats, group chats turned into hangouts, hangouts turned into secret sharing, and secret sharing turned into dates. By the end of the school year you had learned many things about the two best friends, including the fact that not only did they both have a crush on you, but they were both very open with their sexual identities.

It was something entirely new to you that you had never seriously thought about, and the two of them proposed the idea of a polyamorous relationship with you three years after your high school graduation. They had been hesitant to even bring it up, being a year older than you and not wanting to pressure you into anything you weren’t ready for. That aspect alone was enough to make you immediately say yes, having strengthened your relationship and become even closer over the years. Four years later, you had all moved in together and were living in perfect harmony. Between yours and Mattsun’s jobs (and Makki’s trust fund that he drunkenly mentioned one night) you all lived comfortably, splitting chores between you all and planning weekly date nights.

  • Present time (2021), Sendai, Friday evening.

The sound of jazz music playing through your house brought a smile to your face as you kicked off your shoes in the genkan. You placed your bag down by the door as well, stretching your arms above your head before entering the living room. Grinning at the sight of blankets and pillows neatly piled on the couch, you quietly entered the kitchen, leaning in the doorway. Matsukawa stood at the stove and was stirring a pot of soup, the smell of which had wafted through the entire house. Hanamaki was sitting at the kitchen table, chin in his palm and smiling at the man in front of him.

You coughed lightly, drawing the attention of the two men immediately. Though they were in their upper 20s and had significantly matured, they still held onto the boyish grins that stole your heart all those years ago. Makki held his arms out, beckoning you into them for a hug. You obliged his request, sitting on his thighs and laying your head on his shoulder.

“Welcome back, love. How was work today?” Mattsun asked, brown eyes twinkling as he stared at the two most important people in his life.

“It was okay. I got a new case and it’s not looking too good, it’ll be a lot to handle.” You rubbed your eyes, closing them lightly as the music was turned down a few notches. “I missed you guys. How were your days?”

“Well I thankfully didn’t have to do much at work today otherwise I definitely wouldn’t be touching the food we’re about to eat.” You and Makki chuckled in response to your lover’s comment as he turned back to turn the stove off.

“I took care of all the laundry today and prepared everything for our movie night. You can pick what we’re watching, okay sweetheart?” A soft kiss was pressed to your temple, and you leaned into the pink haired boy's touch.

You nodded and opened your eyes, seeing a large and calloused hand reaching out to you. Matsukawa smiled sweetly down at you, pulling you off of Hanamaki’s lap and into his arms. His favorite Louis Armstrong song, “I Only Have Eyes For You”, began to play and you found yourself swaying back and forth by the table.

Are the stars out tonight? I don’t know if it’s cloudy or bright, since I only have eyes for you, dear..

Soft laughter filled the kitchen as the two of you danced throughout it, unaware of the videos and photos Makki was taking. He had never thought he would be able to love someone, let alone two people, as much as he did you two. You continued to expertly dance around the kitchen, the warmth from Matsukawa’s hand on your waist sending shivers up your spine. You couldn’t help but think of the two rings stuffed into a box in your purse that you had picked up the night before. The trumpet interlude began to play as Mattsun whispered praises and compliments into your ear, causing your face to heat up.

“I know things have been hard on you lately, and I just want you to know how proud we are of you, okay?” He said softly, Makki humming in agreement.

“If you two don’t stop I’m gonna start crying, and I know you guys hate when that happens,” you choked out, inhaling deeply to stop the tears from overflowing. “You two mean the world to me.”

A beautiful smile appeared on the face of the dark haired man holding you, and he began to quietly sing along with the husky voice of Louis.

“Maybe a million people go by, but they all disappear from view. Yes mama, I only have eyes for you.”

He finished off your dance by pressing a soft kiss to your lips and twirling you into his arms, before spinning you out towards Hanamaki, who had risen from his spot at the table to take his place. The soothing voice of Ella Fitzgerald entered your ears, and you allowed yourself to once again be swept up in the music. Had the two men you were madly in love with told you back in high school that they enjoyed jazz music you probably would’ve laughed in their faces.

“Did you choose this song just for me?” You teased, wrinkling your nose at Makki. “You know I’m a sucker for Ella.”

April skies are in your eyes, but darling, don’t be blue…

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, baby,” he responded, winking at you before beginning to dance with you as Matsukawa had. He was noticeably steadier on his feet, and led you into the living room as the volume of the music increased.

“As long as we see it through, you have me and I’ll have you.” Makki sang off key, drawing a soft smile from you.

“Don’t break my heart, oh honey, please don’t be that way,” you sang back, tilting your head back to observe Mattsun in the doorway. “That goes for both of you.”

He laughed as he flipped you off before snapping a few pictures of you two swaying back and forth in the living room. Makki twirled you under his arm, bowing dramatically as you curtsied back. You could’ve sworn you heard Matsukawa muttering something about dorks under his breath, but it quickly faded as the former wing spiker before you pulled you into a deep kiss. Your arms wrapped around his neck before tangling in the strands of hair at the base of his neck. A hand slid around your waist, squeezing before smacking your butt.

You pulled away with a glare before the pink haired boy took off for the kitchen, loudly singing the lyrics extremely off key once again.

“Sweetheart, tomorrow is another day! Don’t break my heart, oh honey, please don’t be that way!” He called out from behind his former teammate, effectively hiding himself from your menacing glare.

“You are very lucky that I love you or else I wouldn’t hesitate to smack you with my slipper.”

Thankfully, both men knew that you couldn’t stay mad at them for longer than a few hours when you were actually upset. You rolled your eyes before sitting at the table, the playlist changing as Nat King Cole softly filled the background. Matsukawa placed a large bowl of soup before you, ruffling your hair as he sat on the other side of you. The three of you eat in comfortable silence, enjoying the fresh air floating in from the windows. After finishing dinner, you all retired to the living room for movie night, but not before you snagged the two small boxes from your work bag.

Using the guise of turning on the TV and picking a movie, you knelt down and sucked in a deep breath to will away the shaking hands. The three of you had talked about marriage before and what it would look like, since the older generations in Japan were not as open and accepting to romantic relationships that were not heterosexual. Thankfully, all of your families had been more than accepting and were thrilled to see you all happy and content. You cracked your knuckles one more time before spinning around and kneeling in front of the two boys on the couch.

“Marry me.” You blurted out, eyes widening as the speech you had been preparing for the last two weeks flew out of your mind. “Wait, that’s not how I wanted to ask you guys.”

“Sweetheart, are you sure? The last time we talked you said you weren’t ready-” Matsukawa was cut off by the large hand of his boyfriend slapping over his mouth.

“I, uh, I know. But I’ve been thinking over the last few weeks that we’re not getting any younger. And we’ve already been together for four years,” you rambled on, hands gesturing all over the place. “I know that I want to spend the rest of my life with you two, and I hope you feel the same.”

“Did you really just fucking lick my hand? In the middle of my proposal?” Hanamaki gasped, placing a hand over his chest dramatically. Mattsun responded by rolling his eyes before clearing his throat and looking at you.

“Please, I’ve been imagining marriage with you for the last 7 years. While I definitely wasn’t expecting this one to tag along,” he jerked his thumb towards the boy next to him. “I’m glad he’s here. I’m glad you’re here. So, fuck yeah, let’s do it.”

You shifted your eyes towards Makki, who had unshed tears in his eyes and the most stunning smile gracing his lips. He dived off the couch, tangling himself in the blanket and flopping on top of you. A grunt left your mouth as you crumbled beneath him, the voice of your other partner calling him a string of curse words immediately filling the room

“You beat me to it, butthole. I wanted to ask you guys first,” the boy on top of you said, sounding breathless. “Married at 27, unemployed, basically a glorified househusband? Sign me up.”

Shoving him off of you, you retrieved the ring box that had flown from your hand and gingerly opened it before presenting it to your lovers. Grabbing them out of the box, you gestured to each of them to place out their left hand so you could slide the rings on. You then pulled another ring box from your pocket, pulling out a ring for yourself and handing it to the boys in front of you. Hanamaki slid the ring on your finger as Matsukawa pressed a kiss to your other palm with a soft smile.

“I love you guys more than anything, you know that?” You whispered, sniffling as you climbed onto the couch. “You can’t leave me now, you’re stuck with me.”

“Wouldn’t ever dream of it, baby.” Makki replied, sliding on the other side of you and pressing a kiss to the top of your head. “And I guess you either, beefy boy.”

“Love, can we leave him at the altar and just take off together?” Mattsun asked, earning himself glares from both you and your other now-fiancé. “I’m kidding, jeez! No need to skewer me.”

A slap upside both of their heads had them muttering “sorry” and “love you” to each other as you settled between the two men. Matsukawa turned off the light as Hanamaki pulled a large fluffy blanket over the three of you. The intro music to Game of Thrones began to play and they both groaned in unison as you began to hum along.

“So, Mattsun, we’re just gonna simp over Jon Snow again, right?”

“You’re damn right we are, Makki.”
