_____________
It's one of those days, where Mark randomly wakes up right before anyone else. The sun is yet to rise and the streetlights are still on to guide any wandering people back to their homes. It's on mornings like these, Mark feels at comfort the most. While he's busy enjoying the peace, something, no someone shifts beside him.
Hyuck.
Mark's face splits into a gentle and endearing smile the moment his gaze lands on Hyuck. So beautiful. But there's always this one (1) thought that comes to his mind when he looks at Hyuck like this. Mind you it's a pretty long one and if Mark tried to explain it, he'd go on for hours. But to put it briefly, Mark just loves Hyuck a lot. that's it. Except its a long spiel in Mark's head.
It takes him much determination to do so, but Mark finally pushes himself to get out of bed. Normally, at this hour, he would be scribbling away in his little diary slash lyric book about his thoughts, ideas, beliefs, relationships, life and love but he decides otherwise. He's not too sure why he is doing this despite knowing that he's going to get scolded. That's not like himself at all, he thinks.
So it's not a surprise that he's just a slight bit nervous when he steps into the kitchen. yeah. Mark lee and kitchen? not a good combo. But oh well.
He makes the brave choice of making breakfast for them. "I better go for something simple," he mumbles to himself while selecting a song from his playlist. Its their song, Hyucks and his favourite song. He sets his phone on the other side of the counter after selecting the 'repeat' option and ends up picking eggs to fry.
"Simple enough. You've got this Mark Lee" ah nothing like words of reassurance coming from yourself to yourself.
He's got a hoodie on that's too huge for his body but it's comfy, soft and has 'Vancouver' written on it, so he wears it anyway. He successfully cracks the egg open, transfers it to the buttered pan on a low heat. Sunny side up, just like the way Hyuckie likes it. So far so good.
He waits for it to cook with his hands in his hoodie pockets while softly humming to the song. He remembers the first time he discovered this song, years ago. And just like with every other thing he liked, he had to show Hyuck. Hyuck being the teen he was, rejected Mark's taste but found himself going onto YouTube and searching up lyrics of the song at 1 am only because he couldn't stop thinking about it. Naturally, when they got together as a couple, it became their song.
"You know, this song always reminds me of you", Mark said, shyly to Hyuck, back then "that's why I showed it to you."
Its funny to him that years later he's reminiscing about this while standing in a kitchen and cooking an egg, but it is what it is. The memory blooms to bring him joy and a little smile knowing that both Hyuck and him have grown and matured so much since that time.
What he doesn't know though is that Hyuck had woken up by then. Confused to find the space beside him empty, Hyuck gets up to grab some water but somehow finds Mark in front of the stove. Instantly, the rational side of his brain tells him to get Mark the hell away from the kitchen. So he takes a step to do so but then just as usual, before every bad decision the Hyuck has ever taken (which are many in number but shh!) his irrational side kicks in.
He hardly sees Mark like this (which may or may not be due to their hectic schedule but they aren't complaining) and so he really doesn't want to disturb this moment. He slowly moves towards Mark, putting his head over his shoulder, their similar heights allowing him to do so perfectly, like a key fitting into its lock.
His hands follow Mark's into the hoodie pockets, capturing Mark into a soft backhug. They are warm, Mark's hands. Warm just like the other side of the bed when Hyuck woke up, warm like the way Hyuck feels when Mark sincerely compliments him and warm like his cheeks after their first kiss. How he loved this warmth.
"Good morning, baby ", Hyuck says, voice still raspy from sleep. And Mark's blushing . Hyuck hardly ever uses this "term of endearment" with him. It's usually Mark who calls Hyuck that but whenever Hyuck uses it on Mark, it always renders him into a flushed mess. "He knows what he's doing", Mark's brain tells him. Doubting his ability to form a coherent sentence at that moment, Mark just hums in response.
"This is nice," Mark thinks to himself. Their hands in his pocket kind of remind him of their relationship...hidden, from the watchful eyes of the others and warm just like the support they received from their loved ones.
Just then, Hyuck starts swaying them. They have danced to this song quite a few times but never like this. It felt stupidly good, for a lack of better words. Both of them stuck together, absorbing the warmth radiating from the other. Neither knew but both had their eyes shut, trying to take in as much of this moment as possible. It felt unreal, too perfect to be true and so they wanted to hold onto it with every fibre of their being. It worked. It felt like an eternity packed into 3 little minutes.
Only when Hyuck, smells something burning does he realise that maybe, just maybe he should have listened to the rational part of his brain. His eyes snap open and-
"Mark hyung!! The egg" Hyuck shrieks. Mark scrambles out of his arms quickly turning off the stove.
He almost facepalms himself but not before Hyuck bursts with laughter. Mark stares at him for a second, flabbergasted, before he too starts laughing. Hyuck manages to say "ah hyung, you really should not cook anymore" between his little giggles. and Mark is caught up between cooing over him and defending himself.
"This was your fault Hyuck-ah", he splutters, for the sake of what is left of his self-respect.
"I just hugged you hyung, I didn't know you'd shut down like that" he says while shrugging cockily and falls into another fit of laughter.
With that, Mark is again a blushing mess in the middle of the kitchen. This time Mark grants himself permission to coo over him, internally wondering how lucky he is to deserve to court his own best friend. He scratches the back of his head sheepishly yet not denying the comment. Hyucks not wrong, sometimes Mark himself is surprised at the effects that Hyuck has over him.
"Come on let's have something, my tummy is growling!" Hyuck says cutely, moving to toss the egg into a plate.
Mark smiles as he watches Hyuck season the egg and plate up, admiring his boyfriend.
As they sit on the counter, having a somewhat burnt egg, Hyuck decides that maybe it was a good idea to go with the irrational part for once (read:like every other time). It gave him something to tease Mark for in front of the dreamies and maybe telling czenies about it (only about the part where Mark burns the egg though). But most importantly, it allowed them to find peace, serenity and everything little in between the two, in the midst of a burning egg and a messy but cozy home all while having their song playing in the background.
And neither of them would want in any other way.
