The One Time it Meant Something (and That Something, was Love)

Summary:

Kuroo and Daichi have kept in touch since their first hook-up, and now that they've both graduated, they decided to pursue a relationship. Now they've been dating for a month, and Kuroo is going to spend the weekend like he always does, only now is he struck with a realization.

Kuroo might be in love with Sawamura Daichi.

Or; Kuroo panics, once again, over his new found feelings, in a fluffy finale.

Notes:

Sorry it took me so long to get this out, dealing with work, and stress and some writer's block so yanno a bit of a mess but here we are! Hopefully the word count makes up for the delay. Last one in the series! Yay! Go me! This is the sequel to the original story, The One Time Kuroo Bottomed, and now they are together! (〜^∇^)〜
You don't need to read them all, but of course it would be awesome if you did, but it's not necessary. This is purely self-indulgent because I wanted soft KuroDai!

This takes place a few months after the original one, they are officially together, together, put it happened only like a month ago so they're still in that honeymoon phase, where everything is even more wholesome and soft. So last warning, this may cause toothaches and bellyaches! (´,,•ω•,,)♡

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

If someone told Kuroo that one of his regular hook-ups was going to turn into a relationship, he would’ve laughed in their face. Kuroo didn’t get shackled down, or held back by “feelings,” there is too much of him to go around to be stuck in one relationship. No, it would just be too boring to be with the same person. That was until he slept with Sawamura Daichi. Now, Kuroo is in a committed relationship, and this Kuroo is now incredibly sappy. (Though he’s denied it on several occasions.) Bokuto told him that once you meet the right person, the days aren’t boring and you look forward to them. Kuroo just chalked that up as a biased opinion, seeing as Bokuto and Akaashi have been together since before they were officially together. But he’s starting to understand what Bokuto means.

After their first night together, when Kuroo had enough alcohol to approach Daichi at a house party, which led to them hooking up, they exchanged numbers. They started back at square one, texting, meeting up for study dates at the library, coffee dates. Daichi mentioned again that he was focusing on graduating so his time was divided, and Kuroo understood and respected that. They still hung out as friends, and together with their other friends, and their circles grew closer together.

Daichi graduated with a degree in kinesiology, and would be starting his job as a personal trainer in a few weeks, and Kuroo is back to get his Masters in biochemistry. Once they graduated, they went out for drinks with all their friends and celebrated. They stumbled back to Daichi’s apartment, and had sex for the second time, months after their initial encounter. The next morning, they agreed on giving themselves a proper chance, and they started officially dating. Daichi felt more comfortable now that he had the time to start a relationship. Kuroo would have waited forever for Daichi, but he wouldn’t lie and say he wasn’t anxious to officially be together. They’ve been dating for a month now, and while Kuroo recognizes it’s the honeymoon phase, he can’t see how Daichi could do anything wrong.

Kuroo wouldn’t be the first to admit that they’re still learning things about each other, like how Daichi refuses to sleep on the left side of the bed. Or how Kuroo is very quick to set plans with friends, and Daichi prefers to be at home instead. While these differences aren’t deal breakers, they’re still things the other needed to get used to. Kuroo stays the weekends at Daichi’s and they leave the apartment at least once during their time together. Since Kuroo is still living in the dorms, he feels a little more awkward to bring Daichi to his place since Kuroo does have a roommate, and the space is obviously a little more cramped. They are trying to take things at their pace. Kuroo could see in the future, once he’s got his Masters, moving in with Daichi, that is to say if they’re still together.

But those are future Kuroo problems to worry about. His current worry is whether he can catch the next train to Daichi’s. It’s Friday night, and Kuroo is running from campus to catch the train to get to Daichi’s to start the weekend. Despite them being graduated, it doesn’t seem to mean either of them are any less busy. Kuroo took a couple of spring courses to get ahead for next year, and though Daichi hasn’t started his new job officially, there is still training and papers to read and sign. So Kuroo relishes the weekends, knowing he can catch a break with his favourite person. (Don't tell Bokuto. Though Bokuto’s is probably Akaashi so they’re even.)

However, Kuroo’s late afternoon nap went a little over-schedule, so he’s running to catch the train. They don’t really have a specific time set, but Kuroo was looking forward to seeing Daichi more than usual, and is kicking himself for not setting an alarm. Kuroo doesn’t like to waste a moment of time where the two of them can spend it together. They talk during the week of course, but it’s not the same as hanging out in person. With how Daichi’s last relationship ended, Kuroo tries more than ever to reassure Daichi that he doesn’t feel under or over whelmed by his presence, and that they are striking that perfect balance.

Kuroo understands the insecurity, this is his first serious relationship since his first year at college, so he wants this to work out just as much as Daichi. Especially since it’s still early in their relationship, but Kuroo doesn’t have any doubts that if they keep up the communication, they shouldn’t have any problems.

Kuroo’s feet are slapping the pavement, and his bag is wapping against his back. He practically leaps over the gate, and flies down the stairs to get to the platform. It wasn’t the last train of the day, Kuroo would just have to wait another hour before the next one, and when he was already losing daylight he wasn’t planning on waiting. Luckily Kuroo is fast enough and gets in with the flow of traffic and boards the train. It’s very packed, but it’s to be expected for a Friday evening. He pulls out his phone and shoots Daichi a text that he’ll be arriving within the hour.

Once Kuroo hops off, he stops to buy flowers. The flowers are just because Kuroo’s sappy, he thinks as he smiles at the bouquet of red roses. Daichi already knows and tells him that he’s sappy but Kuroo can’t help it. It’s still such a new feeling, how one person can make him so happy. How Kuroo knows, or hopes anyway, that he makes Daichi just as happy. Having his feelings reciprocated in the same romantic context and someone to hold when he needs the comfort. God, Kuroo is a sap. But he can’t help it, he loves Daichi.

Kuroo stops in his tracks. Wait. What? What did he just realize? Shit. Is this truly what being in love feels like? No, no, there’s no way Kuroo is in love with Daichi. It’s way too early. Right? Kuroo hasn’t even put a word to this feeling except happiness, warmth and home. And shit. Is that what love feels like? There’s no way, they’ve only really started dating a month ago. Kuroo hasn’t ever felt like this before, so he’s just overwhelmed with positive emotions. Obviously he likes Daichi, he’s dating him, but is it love?

Kuroo continues his path at a slightly slower pace, now struck by this realization. A big realization. Kuroo can’t just shake this feeling, he needs to put some serious thought into this. He doesn’t want to half-ass his feelings for Daichi. Fuck, why does he have to have these epiphanies right before he’s supposed to have a stress free, Daichi filled weekend? Kuroo shakes it off, he’ll definitely revisit this at a later date, with time to review all the evidence and consult with a friend. His school life studies are now affecting how he solves personal issues. At least he can say he used it outside of a classroom setting.

Finally, Kuroo is standing outside Daichi’s apartment. Even though the door is unlocked, since Daichi is expecting his arrival, he wants to surprise him, so he knocks, hiding the flowers behind his back. Moments later his beautiful boyfriend is opening the door, face instantly lights up with a smile, and Kuroo’s heart melts. He’s probably making that dopey face that Daichi always makes fun of him for. But Kuroo can’t help when he’s in-

“You’re here! What are you hiding behind your back?” Daichi asks, trying to look over Kuroo’s shoulder.

“Why don’t you let me in so I can show you?” Kuroo smirks, and walks forward into the house, as Daichi backs up. Kuroo closes the door with his foot, and reveals with a flourish the bouquet. Daichi’s eyes light up upon seeing the gift, and now he’s wearing a dopey expression. He gingerly takes the bouquet and inhales the sweet smell, turning the sickly sweet expression on Kuroo, which he wasn’t quite prepared for. If all it took was flowers to make Daichi happy, then Kuroo would gladly build him a greenhouse. Daichi leans forward, placing a hand on Kuroo’s chest and reaching up and placing a kiss on Kuroo’s cheek.

“Thank you, Kuroo. I’m going to go put these in water.” Daichi walks toward the kitchen, still smiling at the bouquet. Now Kuroo knows he’s got that dopey smile on his face. He takes off his shoes, and walks to Daichi’s room to drop off his bag. “Are you hungry? We can order takeout if you want?” Daichi hollers from the kitchen. Kuroo glances at the time, realizes it’s 8:48, it’s already late. He wishes he didn’t take that afternoon nap, wasting precious time he could’ve spent, at least he could’ve nap in his boyfriend's lap. He walks back out of the room into the kitchen, where Daichi is taking the roses out of the plastic and arranging them in a vase. “Or I could whip something together, when was the last time you ate? We can just make popcorn and watch a mov-”

Kuroo drapes himself over Daichi, effectively stopping him from talking. Kuroo buries his face in Daichi’s neck and wraps his arms around Daichi’s waist, trying to restore his energy. Something he’s been doing for awhile, and he doesn’t feel too guilty, considering Daichi is more than solid enough to brace his whole weight. Kuroo has a feeling Daichi is catching on to this song and dance but Kuroo doesn’t mind if it means he doesn’t have to explain what he’s doing. Daichi tries to turn his head to see Kuroo’s face but Kuroo doesn’t let him turn his head. Daichi’s hands come up to rest around Kuroo’s.

“Kuroo… Do you want to eat? I’m not saying you have to, but if you’re hungry or you haven’t eaten. It’s not too late to order something, or we can just have snacks and watch the sequel to the movie series we watched last weekend.” Kuroo really doesn’t know what he wants. He tightens his grip around his waist, like Kuroo is trying to squeeze to become one with Daichi so he doesn’t have to answer him. Daichi must notice his unusual behavior, and once again tries to look at Kuroo, but he only squeezes tighter. One of Daichi's hands leaves his own and goes to run through Kuroo’s hair.

They stand there for a few more minutes in silence, Kuroo just basking in Daichi’s presence that he missed all week, and today. Kuroo feels slightly better now just from the physical contact, that he loosens his hold around Daichi, who takes it as an opportunity to turn around in the embrace. He moves to cup Kuroo’s face and Kuroo let’s him tilt his face so they can make eye contact. Kuroo knows he’s pouting but he isn’t sure what he wants to say. He’s hungry enough for take-out, but what about Daichi? Was he waiting all day for Kuroo to show up? Kuroo is possibly having strong feelings for Daichi, and is just growing more strongly about just how much Daichi cares about him. Daichi smooths his thumbs over Kuroo’s cheeks, looking like he’s trying to decipher what the problem is.

“Baby, what’s wrong? Do you just want to lay down, you haven’t been working too hard have you?” Kuroo brings his hand up, places it over one of Daichi’s and gives him a small smile.

“I missed you.” Is all Kuroo says to find himself securely wrapped in Daichi’s embrace. Kuroo feels even better, and continues, “I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner. I know we don’t get to spend a lot of time together so I should’ve been quicker at getting here, but it’s like 9pm and I took away a day we could’ve spent together.” Kuroo is probably rambling but the whole time he is talking, Daichi seems to hold him tighter and tighter. Daichi leans back, to look at Kuroo's face. Kuroo can’t see any anger on his face, only a small soft smile.

“I missed you too, and you know that we still have two full days together right? And if you were busier earlier that’s fine, you’re here now.” He is here now, and that is the most important part. Daichi seems to have realized his words were effective, and says “Thank you.” While that would confuse someone else, Kuroo knows what he’s thanking him for. Thank you for telling me. Thank you for being honest and vulnerable. Daichi claps his hands on Kuroo's shoulders, startling Kuroo out of his thoughts. “You didn’t answer my question though, what do you want to eat?”

“Um, it’s already pretty late, we can just-”

“No. No excuses or settling. What do you want to eat at this very moment?” Daichi had this look in his eyes that this decision is unwavering.

“Well, I haven’t eaten since breakfast, so I was thinking, maybe ordering Thai, the same place from a couple of weeks ago?”

“Sounds wonderful, you do that, and I’ll go set up the movie.” Daichi goes on his tiptoes and kisses Kuroo’s cheek, and makes his way to the living room.

“Do you want anything, babe?” Kuroo calls, dialling the restaurant.

“I’m alright, thanks though. I’ll make popcorn later during the movie.” Kuroo places the order and goes to the living room to sit with Daichi. The movie is queued up on the tv, and there is a pile of blankets beside Daichi, for them to get comfortable. “Want to finish the series tonight?”

“Oh you know it.”

-

“Kuroo, get your ass off of me.”

“Hm, but you’re comfy, babe.”

“Don’t babe me. If this is your attempt to get me to carry you to bed, think again.” With that Daichi pushes Kuroo’s head off his lap, and gets up to get ready for bed. Kuroo has never explicitly stated that he loves it when Daichi carries him, or proved on multiple occasions how strong he is, but Kuroo guesses he hasn’t been exactly subtle about it. “His majesty is going to have to find a different way to get his ass into bed.”

“I guess I’ll just sleep on the couch, seeing as I’m too tired to get up. I’m sure it’ll be pretty cold in that big bed with only one person sleeping in it.” Kuroo cries, feigning distress. Daichi comes back into the living room, a few moments later, brushing his teeth with one hand while the other is placed on his hip. “I think you forgot something.” Kuroo smirks, gazing up at Daichi. Kuroo is splayed on his back and making grabby hands at him. Daichi bends down and grabs a couple of the blankets off the floor.

“Yeah, it’s going to be extra chilly tonight.” Daichi says, ignoring Kuroo completely, walking back to the bathroom.

“Argh, fuck you, Sa’mura.”

“Um, I’m a little tired tonight. I’ll take a rain check.” Kuroo let out a frustrated groan. For some reason, Kuroo feels like he only has himself to blame for Daichi getting better at witty retorts. He wants to say he’s proud, but it’s coming back to bite him in the ass. Kuroo rolls off the couch and onto the floor. He isn’t trying to be a drama king, but he wouldn’t be having this problem if he had a big strong knight to come scoop him off the floor. Said knight does not return, so Kuroo gets up and goes to the bathroom to brush his own teeth. Once he’s finished he enters the bedroom, stripping himself down to his boxers. He can feel Daichi watching him, but he ignores him, and crawls into the empty space on the bed.

“You know just for that, you’re not getting any cuddles tonight.” Kuroo pouts, making sure his back is facing Daichi, and crosses his arms. He feels like this will taunt him enough, for Daichi to cave in and bring him closer to cuddle. He hears Daichi chuckle quietly.

“You do realize that’s more of a punishment for you, than it is for me right?” Kuroo groans again. Damn this man. He hears Daichi chuckle again behind him, and feels the bed dip closer to his side. Daichi places his hand on Kuroo’s hip and leans down to kiss Kuroo’s shoulder. “Baby, I was kidding I’m sorry.” Daichi whispers against Kuroo’s shoulder, pressing more kisses there.

“Don’t baby me.” Kuroo echoes Daichi’s words from earlier, but rolls over to face Daichi. He can’t help but break his facade, and smile upon seeing Daichi’s warm smile in the low light of the room. Kuroo reaches out and pulls himself closer to Daichi and presses a kiss to his forehead. Then one to his nose, and two for each eye and cheek. Lastly, Kuroo leans forward and kisses Daichi on the lips, trying to express all the feelings he’s had all day. Daichi is quick to reciprocate, carding a hand through the hair at Kuroo’s nape. They break apart, Kuroo pressing their foreheads together, and opens his eyes, to see Daichi’s are still closed, like he’s savouring their kiss. His eyes flutter open and Kuroo is met with that same feeling as always when he looks into Daichi’s eyes. Warmth, comfort, home, love-. NOPE! No, no, no. That is a thought bookmarked for later, he was reminded, his brain frantically running wild with Daichi.

“Kuroo, you alright?” Daichi caresses his nape, trying to get his attention. Kuroo’s face instantly flushes. He tries to cover, shaking his head furiously.

“No no, I uh- I mean yes, I’m alright. Nothing I wouldn’t be alright about, ahahah…” Real subtle there Tetsurou, Daichi won’t suspect a thing! Kuroo pushed with all his might, and rolled his boyfriend over so Daichi couldn’t see his expression. “I’m just super tired you know? Let’s just get some sleep, we’re meeting Bokuto, Akashi, Sugawara and Azumane tomorrow, remember? We need to rest up so Bokuto and Suga can drain us of our energy.” Kuroo laughs nervously. He wraps his arm around Daichi, and slips his leg in between Daichi’s. “Goodnight!”

“Um, okay. Goodnight Kuroo.” Daichi reaches to turn off the light and leans back into Kuroo. Kuroo seriously needs to get a grapple on his emotions at the very least. He can’t be making proclamations of love without any thought or fanfare. IF Kuroo’s feelings are what he thinks they are, Kuroo should take Daichi out on a date. And right at sunrise, profess his love, IF, again IF, it is love. Kuroo may be still trying to learn how to be romantic, but he seems to play the role of the sap very well. Daichi would find it so endearing, probably.

That is of course, if Daichi actually feels the same way. Shit. Kuroo didn’t think of that. Oh no. What if he’s the only one having these complicated emotions? It had only been a month, Kuroo told himself it was too early, so obviously there was no way Daichi could be feeling this way for him. Did Daichi love his ex? That seemed like a dumb question, of course he must’ve, they were together since high school, obviously he loved her. They wouldn’t be together for so long if they didn’t have intense emotional feelings for each other. Shit. There’s so much Kuroo needs to consider.

Daichi’s light snores cut through his rapid thoughts, and bring Kuroo back down. He gives Daichi a soft squeeze mostly for himself, grounding himself to this moment. Now is not the time to be pondering his all consuming feelings of possible love for his boyfriend, he should be sleeping. Kuroo shifts a little more with Daichi in his arms and wills himself to get comfortable and go to sleep. Seriously these feelings need to fuck off .

-

It's morning, and Kuroo’s feelings didn’t in fact “fuck off.” He barely got any sleep last, now he had a very restless, awake Daichi underneath him. Another thing to get used to, Daichi is usually up and ready to start the day at 8am while Kuroo would rather wait until the last possible second before he needs to get up. At least he’s convinced Daichi to sleep in on weekends, just a little bit, if only for Kuroo’s comfort. But now it’s not even a matter of sleeping in, rather just sleep in general. Kuroo couldn’t turn his brain off from all the what ifs. He probably only got a few hours of sleep in the end. And he wonders why he’s never indulged in relationships before. Too many feelings. Refusing to open his eyes, Kuroo tightens his hold on Daichi’s neck to prevent him from getting up. Kuroo can feel more than hear the chuckle that comes from the man underneath him.

“C’mon Kuroo, I’ve indulged in your sleeping in for long enough. It’s almost 10 am.” Kuroo pouts. Daichi does have a point, usually Daichi has quietly crawled out of bed by now or has shaken Kuroo off of him and gotten them both out of bed. But that doesn’t change the fact he doesn’t want to get up. More like he can’t physically get up. Daichi is spread starfish on the mattress waiting for Kuroo to let go so he can escape as quickly as possible. Kuroo is lying on his side with one arm behind Daichi’s head wrapped around his neck and the other tucked across his body with his face shoved in Daichi’s neck to keep any unwanted light coming from the curtains to reach his eyes. He squeezes tighter again, as if that’s going to keep Daichi trapped here in bed with him. Daichi laughs again, and brings his arm up to wrap around Kuroo’s shoulders.

“I promise I’ll make time tonight for us to cuddle if that’s the issue here.” Kuroo feels Daichi press a few kisses to his even more unruly bedhead. Kuroo hums, and considers the offer. While he is big on cuddling, it’s also the sleeping part he needs more of it.

“Do you have to get up?” Kuroo mumbles in Daichi’s neck.

“You’re the one who made plans with our friends to get lunch. So it’s not just me, you also have to get up.” Kuroo groans and rolls himself over to lie directly on top of his boyfriend, wrapping both of his arms around his neck. Why does he bother making plans, when they never sound as appealing as staying in bed all day with his boyfriend. “I will carry you out like last time if you don’t get up.” Kuroo can barely hold back his smile, that time was funny, it would also make up for last night. Daichi must feel it against his skin, because he sits up and all but throws Kuroo over his shoulder and walks out to the kitchen.

“HEY! You could at least carry me lovingly!” Kuroo shouts. Seeing as he’s at the right height, he smacks Daichi’s ass. Daichi makes a yelping sound, and lifts Kuroo off his shoulder by his waist and places him on the counter. Yeah, Kuroo is now convinced that Daichi knows that he loves being manhandled. Which he guesses, if their first time together all those months ago is indicative of anything. Kuroo loves how strong Daichi is and how rough he can be when he asks for it. (Quite often he might add, but that’s neither here nor there.)

“Happy your majesty? Am I forgiven for last night?” Daichi asks sweetly, dragging his hands up Kuroo’s thighs. Kuroo pretends to think about it, and wraps his thighs around Daichi, tugging him closer.

“Mmmh, I’ll consider last night an oversight, as you’ve redeemed yourself, my handsome knight.” Kuroo declares, loosely wrapping his arms around Daichi’s neck. Kuroo is getting caught up in Daichi’s gaze; he doesn’t realize they both subconsciously move closer together. Kuroo closes the distance in a lazily kiss that he makes sure he gets every morning. They pull apart, keeping their faces close, Daichi rubs their noses together.

“Good morning.”

“Mornin’ Sa’mura.” Kuroo places many repeated kisses on Daichi’s lips before leaning back. “So is my handsome knight going to make me breakfast?” Daichi leans back, and lets out a laugh.

“Really should’ve read the fine print when I took this job.”

“Mmm. That sounds like a you problem.” Kuroo smirks, running his hands through Daichi’s hair. Daichi hums;

“A problem I am more than willing to bear, your majesty.” Daichi steps back, taking a bow, and lifting Kuroo’s hand and kissing the back of it.

“You’re such a dork.”

“Says the one roleplaying since last night.” Daichi chuckles, as he moves about the kitchen getting their breakfast ready.

“I believe it was you, who called me your majesty and picked it back up this morning.” Kuroo crosses his legs and leans back on the counter. “You lo-” Kuroo stops mid-sentence. He really can’t escape his own thoughts. He needs to talk about this with someone, preferably not with Daichi. Not yet anyway. Kuroo isn’t ready. His abrupt halt in his sentence didn’t go unnoticed by Daichi, shockingly.

“You were saying?” Daichi turns from the fridge. Kuroo feels his face get red. How is he supposed to talk himself out of this one?

“Um, I was saying, um… you- your loyalty should lie with the king. Yeah. So don’t lie to me.” Daichi looks at Kuroo like he’s grown two heads, and now Kuroo feels even more embarrassed. “I’m, uh, going to go get ready. Yeah. For our plans later, and for the day. Yeah. Call me when breakfast is ready.” Kuroo hurriedly hops off the counter and speed walks to the bedroom. Obviously these feelings should be talked about as soon as possible.

-

Kuroo managed to get in together after breakfast, and Daichi was none the wiser of the internal spiraling happening in Kuroo’s mind. Now they were walking to the cafe where they were meeting Sugawara, Asahi, Akaashi and Bokuto. After which they are going shopping at the mall, with varying lists per person. Kuroo decides that for now, Bokuto is the best person to talk about these sudden feelings. After all, Bokuto has been wrapped around Akaashi’s finger a lot longer than Kuroo has been around Daichi’s. If anyone is an expert on love, it’s Bokuto.

They arrive at the cafe last, and Bokuto is quick to make his presence known, waving Kuroo and Daichi over. Kuroo slides into the seat next to Bokuto, across from Daichi, where Bokuto is quick to wrap his arm around Kuroo’s shoulders and bring him into a headlock. Kuroo seriously needs to stop endorsing this behaviour if he wants to live to his 30s.

“Hey, hey HEY! I missed you bro!” Bokuto cries, only squeezing tighter around Kuroo’s head. Kuroo lets out a wheeze, and he’s released. When a soft, but always stern voice pipes up;

“Koutarou, you’ll be missing him a lot more if you kill him, loosen your hold.” Always saved by Akaashi.

“OOPS! Sorry bro, I got caught up in the moment.” Kuroo sits up, taking a few exaggerated deep breaths.

“Bro, you say that every time you see me. It’s been less than a day, you saw me yesterday morning.”

“Yeah, but when I got back to our room you were already long gone, so I didn’t get to say goodbye.” Bokuto pouts, crossing his arms. Kuroo knows he’ll never win against Bokuto. Akaashi must have become immune to Bokuto’s dog eyes and sad looks. When it comes to the non serious things.

“Yes, okay. Sorry I didn’t say bye yesterday. I missed you too Bokuto.” He glances across the table, and sees everyone looking at him fondly. Kuroo flushes, and looks away. Bokuto’s seriously embarrassing sometimes. They all fall into comfortable chatter, catching up with everyone, talking about their weeks and their post-secondary plans. Kuroo has grown closer with Sugawara and Azumane. Though right out the gate, Suga expressed very clearly that if Kuroo did anything to break Daichi’s heart, he was promised his body would never be found. Asahi said a quiet congratulations behind Suga. By that logic, Kuroo was accepted into Daichi’s friend’s group. There’s no point in arguing with Suga, Kuroo was quick to learn that. But Kuroo knows Suga only has the best intentions when it comes to Daichi.

-

Eventually, the group makes their way to the mall, and discusses the stores and items they want to buy. Kuroo is quick to snag Bokuto, so he can finally discuss these feelings .

“I’m going to go with Bokuto and look at new knee pads for him, we’ll meet up with you guys later!” Kuroo starts pushing Bokuto in the direction of the sporting goods store, as he waves over his shoulder. He continues to speed walk and push Bokuto. They get to the store and Bokuto instantly goes to the Volleyball section and begins checking out the equipment. “Bro, we’re not actually here for knee pads. I need to talk to you about something.” Bokuto doesn’t turn to look at him as he compares two brands of knee pads.

“I do actually need knee pads though. But of course bro, you can talk to me about anything. What’s up?” Kuroo lets out a sigh. Guess he’s going to need a little more of his attention.

“It’s about Daichi, I-” Bokuto is quick to look up at Kuroo, wide eyed, finishing Kuroo’s sentence before Kuroo could.

“What’s wrong with Daichi? Is everything okay?”

“Yes, he’s fine, it’s-”

“Is there a problem?”

“No-”

“Are you guys going to break up? Is that why you want to talk to me?” Bokuto’s voice has progressively pitched higher and more panicked.

“NO! It’s the opposite!” Kuroo shouts, gaining a couple concerned glances from other shoppers and a few staff members. Kuroo flushes a bit, and turns back to Bokuto. “Everything is amazing with Sawamura.” He says a little more quietly.

“Then, what’s up? If everything is great, what did you want to talk about?” Bokuto gasps, and grabs Kuroo’s arm. “You want to swap cute boyfriend stories? Has the time finally come where I can talk about Keiji without you complaining?” He almost looks giddy, like he’s been waiting for this moment his whole relationship. Yeah. Kuroo isn’t sure if Bokuto is aware how whipped he is for Akaashi.

“No bro, as much as I’m happy for your love life. I am, to put it bluntly, panicking.” Bokuto, unbelievably enough seems to pick up on the seriousness, and says;

“Let me just pay for these and we can sit on a bench.” They cash out, and find the nearest bench outside the store. “Okay, explain everything.” Kuroo can appreciate Bokuto’s full attention, because this is serious.

“So I’ve only come to this realization yesterday, but maybe it’s been there this whole time and I just didn’t have a word for it but,” Kuroo takes a breath. “I think I have, um, feelings for Sawamura.” Bokuto lets out a loud cackle.

“Well, you guys have been dating for a month, I hope you have feelings.”

“No, you smartass. I think I have deeper feelings.” Bokuto blinks at him owlishly. He’s really going to make me say it huh, Kuroo thinks. “Like I think I might love him?” Bokuto gasps, and clasps both his hands over his mouth. But even that couldn’t cover his wide grin.

“OH MY GOSH!! BRO!! THIS IS SO EXCITING!!” Now, Bokuto is shaking Kuroo by the shoulders. In hindsight, Kuroo should’ve seen this coming. Bokuto is blinded by love, he’s going to have a biased opinion. In any case, Kuroo continues;

“It’s actually a little nerve-wracking. I’ve been stressing about it so much that I didn’t sleep much last night. We’ve only been dating for a month, I mean don’t you think it’s a little early for me to be feeling like this?” Bokuto lets go of Kuroo and takes a moment to think.

“I don’t think it’s too early, I feel like I loved Keiji before I even thought of that, this is what love is. I ended up talking to Keiji about it, and it was a really good conversation. I think it was the summer after he graduated highschool? Which was earlier for our relationship. Really only a year into our relationship.”

“Yes, but there’s a big difference between one month and one year , Bo. Also, you and Akaashi are like soulmates, of course he would return your feelings.” Kuroo lets out an exasperated sigh. “What if this isn’t even in love? I haven’t been in a serious relationship that’s lasted more than a week. I’ve set a new record, and I’m not about to scare him away by professing my feelings I’m not even sure about. How did you know it was love?”

“I’m not sure man. I just knew that Keiji understood me like no one else, and was always the most understanding. I remember looking at him and thinking, this is my person. I feel safe, and at home when I’m with him. He takes care of me when I’m sick, and I know when he’s feeling stressed out, to draw him a bath. Even if he doesn’t admit it, he likes when I pamper him.” Bokuto looks down with a soft smile. “It feels like every time we’re together, we could be doing anything, and still, it’s so much fun because he is my favourite person.”

“Woah, dude. You’re so far gone.” Kuroo teases, but looking at Bokuto, it seems that he’s unphased by the comment. Kuroo is positive, he doesn’t look that gooey when he’s talking about Daichi. Bokuto chooses to ignore Kuroo’s comment and continues.

“I know it’s love because there is no one else I would rather spend my time with. There’s no other person that brings out the best in me and I think you’re right. I think we are soulmates.” Well, Kuroo is beyond happy for his friend, but he doesn’t think him and Daichi have quite reached that level in their relationship. Of course, Kuroo wants to spend every waking minute with Daichi, but they’re still in the honeymoon phase where neither could do anything wrong. Whereas Bokuto and Akaashi have been together for over 5 years, and in that time have built up the relationship to where it is now. Bokuto, as if still sensing Kuroo’s confusion continues, “People believe in love at first sight, you know? So for you to be thinking that you love Daichi after five months of knowing him, and one month of dating him? That doesn’t sound too far-fetched at all.”

Kuroo figures in all the sappy shit that Bokuto just told him, there is some truth to it. While Kuroo has never had a serious relationship last this long, what Bokuto was saying made sense and Kuroo could relate to some of it. Daichi is his favourite person, (which he can confidently admit now, since Bokuto said Akaashi was his,) and when they’re together he feels safe and at home. Like Daichi wouldn’t judge him for anything he would do or say. While they were constantly learning new things about each other, there is definitely a feeling of love. Kuroo could, maybe, possibly , admit to himself, that he loves Daichi. Bokuto put a reassuring hand on Kuroo’s shoulder.

“It’s not as complicated as you might think. And really, you don’t have to give it a name either, bro. I haven’t seen you this happy in a while and I’m so happy you’ve found someone that makes you this happy!! Dai-chan is the best!”

“Don’t have to tell me, I know.” Kuroo places a hand on one of Bokuto’s shoulders. “Thanks bro, I appreciate you.” Bokuto gives him the biggest smile, throwing both his arms around Kuroo’s shoulders.

“AWE! I appreciate you too!!” He gives Kuroo a squeeze before Bokuto lets go to lean back. Kuroo really did have the best people in their corner.

They shop a few more places before they join back with the others for lunch. They all got food from various restaurants and were sitting together at a round table. Kuroo sits across from Daichi, who is talking to Suga, nodding along to whatever wild story Suga is telling with his hands. Kuroo watches as Daichi takes a bite from his burger and his cheeks puff out as he chews. Despite the scene, Kuroo can’t help but find how adorable his hunk of a man can be. He must be staring because Asahi beside him, nudges him to get his attention.

“You know you’re really good for him.” Asahi says with a smile. “The breakup was really hard on Daichi. Even leading up to it. He lost sleep trying to figure out how to make them work out. Especially because the four of us all graduated from the same high school, and were all close friends before any of us started dating.” He looks over at Suga and Daichi. “Suga and I were there with him through it all. What Michimiya did was so rude and out of character, I almost didn’t believe it when Daichi told us. That’s why Suga was more wary about you, he wanted Daichi to get back out there, but the way you guys met was, um, different. For Daichi at least. Suga was convinced that you were bad news, because of the way Daichi talked about you, we were both worried you were just playing around and not looking for a relationship. But you really are a great guy!”

“Geez, don’t flatter me too much.” Kuroo rolls his eyes. “I think that’s the most I’ve heard you talk in one sitting.” Kuroo couldn’t help but tease. Asahi blushes and sheepishly rubs the back of his neck.

“Sorry if that came out of nowhere. It’s just the way you look at him, it makes me wonder why I was ever worried at all.” Now it was Kuroo’s turn to blush. “But you know I do worry. A lot. Koushi has made me very aware of it, I’m working on it. But I’m not so worried about Daichi, or you. I know you guys are both so good for each other.” Kuroo turns away, he can’t help it.

“What do I look like when I look at him?” Kuroo whispers. He can’t help it, he’s curious to know what Azumane’s opinion of his current lovesick state is.

“You look at him like he’s the only person in the room.” Asahi says softly. As if that wasn’t enough fuel for Kuroo, Asahi tacks on after, “But don’t worry, he looks at you the same way.” Kuroo slaps both his hands over his face, effectively (or so he hopes,) hiding his blush. Asahi chuckles beside him. “I realize that was all unsolicited, sorry. It was supposed to be reassuring.”

“I think I liked it better when you didn’t say much, Azumane.” Kuroo grumbles, while smiling. Asahi laughs it off, and he tells Kuroo about his designs for his first apparel launch. Once they’re all done with lunch, they start making their way out of the mall. Kuroo and Daichi are walking beside each other, behind everyone else. Kuroo feels a little more at ease about his feelings now that he and Bokuto had a heart to heart. He no longer feels like he’ll spill every emotion he’s had by taking one look at him.

“So what did you end up buying?” Daichi asks, gesturing to the bag that Kuroo is swinging between them.

“Oh not much. Just a little something, for a special someone.” He smirks looking over at Daichi. Daichi’s eyes widen and a smile appears on his face. God, where’s a camera when Kuroo needs one.

“First the flowers, now this?”

“I never said that what I bought was for you…”

“But you- you said… Argh Kuroo you ass!” Daichi shoves Kuroo, enough for Kuroo to almost lose his balance.

“You seriously need to work on your comebacks, Sa’amura. Unless of course, you are trying to say something… I have been told I do have a nice ass.” Kuroo comes closer, and wraps an arm around Daichi’s waist, pulling them together. Daichi huffs, and crosses his arms looking up at Kuroo.

“You’re impossible sometimes. Fine then. Guess I get to keep this gift I bought you.” Now, it’s Daichi’s turn to look smug.

“What!? But I didn’t know you bought me anything, you should have told me first.”

“Well, you should’ve considered that before you started being mean to me.” Time to activate my charms, Kuroo thought.

“Baby, sweetheart, angel-”

“Ooooh, angel’s new...”

“I promise you, everything in this bag, I bought only with the intention of giving it to you. You’re my special someone, of course. To prove it to you, I’ll do whatever-”

“The dishes.”

“Huh?”

“The dishes. You’ll do the dishes after supper.” Daichi certainly drives a hard bargain, but if Kuroo could convince him to order pizza or- “And I already have plans for supper, that requires a lot of dishes.” Damn. Kuroo needs to dial back how much his scheming nature is working against him. He’s taught Daichi far too much. Of course, Kuroo comes up with an equally smooth response.

“Well, of course I would do the dishes babe. That’s just in my job description of my boyfriend duties. You sure there’s nothing else you want me to do?” Kuroo gently grabs Daichi’s chin so he can look up at Kuroo. Daichi pouts up at Kuroo, who only smirks in response.

“You know if you’re not helping your case by being a smarta-” Daichi cuts himself off, stops walking and looks forward, and Kuroo follows suit to see what made him stop. Their four friends have stopped, and were all looking at them with varying fond expressions. Kuroo flushes a bit, at being caught flirting with his boyfriend. Which in hindsight, he shouldn’t be, but they haven’t done much PDA aside from the occasional handhold or pet name in front of them.

“Awe c’mon Dai-chan, show Kuroo what you got him! Look at him! How could you say no to that face? I wanna see too! Whatcha get him?”

“You spent like hours deciding Daichi, might as well give it to him now.”

“Kuroo-san, you seriously want to flatter Sawamura-san, you need to work on your buttering up skills. Koutarou is a master at this art, might I suggest you ask him for advice?” Daichi starts laughing, probably at the ridiculousness of it, flushed face and hands clasped over his stomach. Kuroo could blush more, seeing his boyfriend in one of his most beautiful states. (Right next to when he’s above Kuroo, nake-) Kuroo feels eyes on him and turns back to his group of friends to lock eyes with Asahi. His words from earlier ring in his head:

You look at him like he’s the only person in the room.

Before Kuroo has more time to feel even more embarrassed, someone clearing their throat brings him out of his thoughts. He turns back to Daichi who is holding out a bag for him. He’s wearing a soft smile and his face is slightly flushed. He holds the bag a little closer to Kuroo, encouraging him to take it. Kuroo takes the small yellow bag and pulls out a cat keychain. It’s a black cat that is curled in on itself, with Z’s written above its head. Kuroo couldn’t hold back his smile even if he tried. He puts it back in the bag, and reaches over, wrapping an arm around Daichi’s shoulders. Daichi is quick to put a hand on the arm around him, squeezing Kuroo back.

“Thank you, baby. I love it.” Kuroo whispers just for Daichi to hear, and plants a kiss on top of his head. Then Kuroo is struck with a thought. He quickly unwraps his arm around Daichi and looks down at him. Daichi supplies Kuroo with an eyebrow raise, and Kuroo turns back to their friends. “I forgot to buy something, we'll see you guys later.” He grabs Daichi by the wrist and starts dragging him back into the mall.

“Hey- Kuroo wait- BYE GUYS!” Daichi hollers over his shoulder. There is a chorus of byes and see you laters. However Suga’s voice carries a little further, to Kuroo.

“You better text me Daichi! I want to see what Kuroo got you!! Don’t leave me out of your fun!” Yeah right, is all Kuroo can think. No way would Daichi want to show Suga what Kuroo got him. He’s still tugging Daichi behind him when Kuroo realizes he doesn’t know where he’s going. He stops, and by effect, Daichi runs into his back.

“Argh, Kuroo, what’s the big deal, where else did you need to go?”

“Where did you buy the keychain?” Kuroo asks, turning back around to face Daichi. He slides his hand down from Daichi’s wrist to hold his hand instead. “I just wanted to buy a matching one for my special someone.” Kuroo reassures. Daichi is once again smiling, squeezes Kuroo’s hand and starts leading him to the store where he bought the keychain.

-

“Baby, please can you come out and show me?” Kuroo cries from the bedroom.

“I cannot believe you bought this for me. What in your mind thought that this was a good idea to buy me?” Daichi’s muffled response from the bathroom. They got back from shopping, Daichi made the fancy supper as promised, Kuroo upheld his boyfriend duties and did the dishes, and now Kuroo is awaiting his promised cuddles from this morning. He is waiting for Daichi to waltz in, in what Kuroo hopes to be, his new favourite outfit of Daichi’s. He bought Daichi a silk pyjama set, that as tacky as it was on the hanger, Kuroo needed to buy it for his boyfriend.

“It made me think of you, and only all our most sexiest times together.” Kuroo chirps back. He just wasn’t sure what the hold up was. It was by no means a complicated pyjama set, so Kuroo is wondering if this gag gift was really worth it if Daichi didn’t even want to show him.

“You better not laugh at me. I feel like you bought this just for your own amusement.” Daichi’s voice sounds like it’s right outside the bedroom door now.

“I’m not going to lie, Sa’amura. Part of this present is for me. I would love to see you in the pjs, so get your ass in here so I can see.” The door opens slowly, revealing a sight that Kuroo wants to burn in his memory forever. In the doorway, Daichi is clad in light pink satin short shorts with a red waistband, that are pulled taunt over Daichi’s mouth-watering thighs, they are snug, but they don’t look uncomfortable. God, Kuroo hopes they’re not uncomfortable because he could get used to a sight like this. Daichi slowly makes his way over to Kuroo on the bed, and Kuroo can’t take his eyes off him.

“Kuroo?” Kuroo hums in response, a little preoccupied at the moment. “You got a little something…” Kuroo looks up at Daichi who is smirking down at him. Daichi brings his hand up and thumbs at the corner of Kuroo’s mouth. “Yeah right here. Got a little drool there, baby.” Kuroo flushes, and Daichi starts howling with laughter. “Oh my gosh-you should- you should see your face!” Kuroo can’t help but laugh with Daichi, his laughter is a little contagious. Once Daichi is close enough, Kuroo grabs him by the hips and hauls him onto the bed, still laughing, making Daichi straddle his lap. Being wonderfully caged by Daichi’s thighs.

“You should see yourself right now, my God. You’re killing me here babe.” Kuroo massages the thick muscles, appreciates the shorts and his good ideas.

“I did, and I look ridiculous. It barely covers anything.” Daichi places a hand on Kuroo’s shoulder.

“Hey, no complaints over here.” Daichi snorts at that. “Did you notice the little detail on the ass?” Kuroo asks, dragging his hands up from Daichi’s thighs around his hips, smacking and grabbing his ass. Daichi lurches forward, and gives an unimpressed look at Kuroo.

“Yes I did. Is that the only reason you bought it?” Kuroo looks up smirking at Daichi, while Daichi rolls his eyes like his question was answered. Kuroo feels an embossed lipstick print on his left ass cheek. “You’re insatiable.” Kuroo leans forward and kisses Daichi’s navel.

“Only for you darling.” It’s only then that Kuroo realizes that Daichi isn’t wearing the shirt that goes with the shorts. “Where’s the shirt? Not going to complete the look?” Daichi rolls his eyes again, and holds out his other hand, that isn’t resting on Kuroo, to show the shirt clutched in his hands.

“This one's a no, Kuroo. The shorts are comfy enough, but the shirt doesn’t fit.” To prove his point, almost like Kuroo wouldn’t believe him if he didn’t see, he pulls the silk button down over his head. The shirt is pink just like the shorts, with red trim around the cuffs and collar and red buttons. There is one pocket with an identical dark pink lipstick print, as on the ass. Daichi looks like a complete dream, however he is right. The shirt doesn’t fit, and the fabric is stretched to its limits across Daichi’s chest. The buttons are all gapping and it looks like Daichi can’t move his arms up and down even if he tries.

“Sorry babe. I didn’t take into account your boobs.” Daichi whacks him upside the head, a button threatening to pop off. Kuroo laughs and begins unbuttoning the shirt so it doesn’t rip.

“I believe it’s these “boobs” that made you call back.”

“Well, it was one of the reasons.” Kuroo opens the shirt and runs his hands up and down Daichi’s sides, then settling his hands on his hips. “Your thighs were another.”

“Oh Kuroo!” Daichi laughs, clearly meant to be upset. “You’re supposed to say something not superficial. Something about my honest heart, or my caring soul.” Now it’s Kuroo’s turn to laugh.

“Baby, I hate to break it to you, but after I left your place later that morning, I was mostly thinking about how I had to keep it together until I made it back to the dorms. You didn’t put on any more clothes for the rest of the morning. You were torturing me!” Daichi chuckles at the memory. “Of course, it was later after I thought about it some more, how I’ve never had a guy be so kind to me the morning after. Honestly, you were a dream. Are a dream.” Kuroo recovers. Daichi hums in agreement. Running a hand through Kuroo’s wild hair.

“Nice save there. I don’t know why I answered.” Daichi teases back. “Of course, it might’ve been your witty remarks, but even those weren’t very good.”

“HEY! You can’t blame me too much, I was hungover as fuck. Then there’s this knight in shining armour taking such good care of me, you can’t blame me for being a gay mess!” Daichi’s face turns fond, and continues to play with Kuroo’s hair.

“Aren’t I so happy I did.” Kuroo flushes a little at the statement. He thinks that maybe, just maybe, this is what Kuroo’s face looks like when he talks or thinks of Daichi. They lean forward at the same time and meet in the middle for a sweet kiss. A firm press of lips, expressing so much more than words can. But Kuroo knows the word now. It’s love. Daichi leans back and presses a kiss to Kuroo’s brow bone, one under his eye, on the tip of his nose and another one on his lips. When they break apart, Daichi leans back and Kuroo can’t help but think he’s also happy Daichi answered. “So are you heartbroken the shirt doesn’t fit? I’ll still wear the shorts, the fabric is nice.”

“I would love for you to wear the shorts, and honestly, not mad about the shirt. You look hotter with fewer clothes on anyway.” He smirks up at Daichi, giving his hips a squeeze. Then a lightbulb goes off in Kuroo’s brain. “Get off for a second.” He says tapping Daichi’s hip.

“You’re the one who pulled me on.” Daichi says, climbing off of Kuroo and onto his side of the bed. Kuroo climbs out of bed.

“Yes well, I’ll get back to you in a second. Pass me the shirt.” Daichi slips the shirt off his shoulders, and hands it to Kuroo. Kuroo slides into the shirt himself, and quickly does up the buttons. It fits a lot better size wise, where Daichi is wide, Kuroo’s torso is long. It rests above his hips so his black boxers are still seen, but there is less strain on the buttons and arms. The silk feels so nice on his skin, but he does feel a little ridiculous wearing it. Kuroo cocks his hip out and poses for Daichi. “Well? What do you think?” Daichi seems a little lost in thought, as he stares at Kuroo.

“It looks a lot better on you, than me.” He finally says.

“Watch out there Sa’amura, there’s a little drool starting to pool.” Daichi rolls his eyes but he doesn’t deny it. “Now that that’s sorted, I believe I was promised some cuddles?” He stalks back to the bed, and Daichi is already getting under the covers. Kuroo turns off the light, leaving only the nightside table lamp on.

“Of course, anything for his majesty.” Daichi says, holding open the blankets for Kuroo to crawl in. “How do you want me?”

“Oh, that is a dangerous question there, baby.” Kuroo smirks, as he climbs under the covers. “For now, just like that.” Kuroo places his hand on Daichi’s chest so he doesn’t roll over, and Kuroo curls up into Daichi’s side with his head on his shoulder, wraps his arms around Daichi and hitches a leg up on his hip. Daichi is quick to fall into a comfortable position, arm around Kuroo’s shoulders, holding him close and his other hand wrapped around Kuroo’s on his chest. They always seem to fit together like puzzle pieces, like they were made for each other.

“You know, these can be our boyfriend pajamas. We’re a matching set.” Daichi snorts above Kuroo. He curls his hand up and plays with the hair at Kuroo’s nape. Kuroo melts a little closer to Daichi. It’s now that Bokuto’s words ring in his head. Love feels safe and warm, a lot like coming home. Kuroo feels it when he looks in Daichi’s eyes, when he’s in his embrace. When Daichi understands things silently, like getting him another coffee, or giving Kuroo space when he needs it. It’s a vastly different feeling than how he was before.

Before Kuroo didn’t think of feelings, if he was intimate with someone, it was to blow off steam, or expend some extra energy. Kuroo didn’t take sex too seriously, never thought of love, and just did one night stands because Kuroo likes sex, and doesn’t like feelings or pent up emotions. Now it’s different. It’s overwhelming the jarring difference between hook-ups and a relationship, but Kuroo wouldn’t change it for the world.

Daichi leans down and pulls Kuroo a little closer at the same time, peppering kisses on Kuroo’s hairline. Kuroo, way too tired from today, and yesterday’s lack of sleep, lazily presses a kiss where he rests his head. They mumble goodnights, and relax into each other for a much more restful sleep. Whether it’s love or not he feels for Daichi, he can’t be 100% sure. But he’s more than willing to stick around and find out.

Notes:

Thank you for reading, and reading the series! I hope it was well enjoyed! I appreciate all the support it means a lot. Hopefully it wasn't too sappy or anything, I couldn't help myself. This is the end of the series, but not the end of Kurodai for me! I loved writing them, and I definitely will again!
