Work Text:
The hour you waited for is, finally here. Getting out of this shitty place was the only thing you ever look forward to. Because every day is just the same cycle. Just as it is, and how it should be. Not that you complained though, you didn’t have to worry about anything or anyone at all. But some part of you wanted and missed the thrill, enthusiasm, and happiness you used to have in your life. I guess you’re now too old for that. But still, you didn’t complain because everything was well. You weren’t happy, but you were content.
As you finally got out of the building, you saw how the streets and people outside were busy. Cars and people everywhere. It was almost night and the city was now in a long rush. You suddenly decided to stop by somewhere, you know just to calm yourself down and eat. You were starving as hell. It was a long day and you didn’t ate lunch earlier because of how busy you were.
You thought of going to an expensive place but you weren’t in the mood for that you just wanted to eat, so you ended up in a laidback café & bakery that caught your attention because of how the place looked aesthetically pleasing. You are a big fan of coffee, every day before work you stop by a café near your workplace to buy coffee so that you can overcome another day full of shit at work.
You wonder how you never heard of place before given that you are a big fan of coffee but maybe it’s because you buy your everyday coffee at the same place. Maybe sometime you’d buy your everyday coffee in a different café, but you thought it was a hassle. It already is a routine to buy the same coffee everyday what if the coffee’s from other café won’t fit your taste. It would be a waste of time.
After you ordered you sat down at one of the seats to eat, you weren’t familiar with the menu and their menu wasn’t that wide and many. You were so famished that you didn’t notice sitting in front of you was someone very familiar…
“Nanami?” You asked smiling, after you finally gathered the courage to speak but you didn’t mind because it was so unexpected and you haven’t seen him in a while. He still looked the same but more… mature than you last saw him. He wore a striped jacket over a white button-down dress shirt and a dark-colored tie with white dots all over it. It was still somehow the same outfit he used to wear when we both worked together, he still dressed formal.
“Do you remember me?” You asked after realizing he haven’t responded to you, he must’ve forgotten about you. Well it really is been a while.
“Of course. Y/N L/N” Nanami said after clearing his throat. He, in a million years never thought that he’d see a co-worker in an unexpected place and an unexpected time. But most of all, he had been enthralled by the sight of you. Your appearance changes-a good change. He thought that you have grown into a fine woman, but he’d never admit it or let it show.
“You do! How are you?” As you said that, he thought your energy and demeanor is still the same. You were still as kind and bright as he remembered.
“I’m well” he bluntly said. You weren’t surprised at all, the straightforward and stoic Nanami you knew is still the same. “I’m glad you are, what do you do know?” You said as you took a bite of a bread you bought.
“I work at a school now”
“That’s great, as a teacher?”
“Just a staff” you nodded. “How about you, Ms. L/n?” Nanami is impatient for unwanted conversations, but Y/N wasn't someone you wouldn’t want to talk to. She wasn’t playful and goofy unlike…
“Oh no, just call me Y/N please” you said waving your hands, signing no.
“I’m still there” you sighed, leaning your elbows in the table.
“That place didn’t change to the slightest”
“The company is worse and unfortunately I’m in the worst department”
“It is the trademark of the company. Full of shit.” Back then, you and Nanami used to curse the company a lot.
“Right… I thought they would treat me better or somehow… Nicer if I become the head”
“But nothing still changed, still the mysoginic fucking men they are” you let out a chuckle and rolled your eyes. “Oh geez I’m sorry, I’m complaining here about my work to you after we just met in a while” you realized that you over talked to him, he might’ve now been annoyed by your blabbering.
“Doesn’t matter anyways. The job pays are great, I guess?”. “Say Nanami, what if I resign and follow you to that school of yours” you leaned your face to your palm and stared at him, and he, listening not showing any emotion.
“You wouldn’t want to”
“Oh? Is it as shitty as the company?”
“It is, but it suits me more”
“Tell me about it-“ you were cut off by the sound of Nanami’s phone, it seems he received a text by the ringtone. His eyebrows furrowed as he reads the text, it must be an emergency or something.
“I have to go” he said standing up.
“Alright” you said, you felt sad that your unexpected reunion was ended. You were expecting to talk to him more. But he needed to go, it was important. You wondered when will you get to see him.
“Nanami” you called him standing up.
“We’ll meet again, right?”
Nanami saw the genuineness to your smile and the hope in your eyes. A sight that he haven’t seen in a while due to his line of work. He wished he could give you an answer, but he too, isn’t quite sure himself. Not wanting to give you false hopes he turned his heel and walked away.
“We will” you said as he finally was gone from your sight.
