Work Text:
they've been married for a while now, and the house they own together has some empty flowerbeds outside. once they finally decide to plant some flowers in it, miles is very particular about what flowers they'll plant and where they'll go. he wants it to be perfect, to have the perfect blend of various flowers and colors. phoenix doesn't understand why he's so particular about it, but he still listens to miles' every detail on what goes where. he knows that miles knows more about this kind of thing anyway.
at first, miles is refusing to get his hands dirty, making phoenix do everything by himself. phoenix is begging him to help, growing tired from having to do this all on his own while miles only observes. miles eventually kneels down next to phoenix and joins him, but he complains, saying that he only helps because he doesn't trust phoenix to do it well enough on his own. he won't admit that he grows to enjoy helping out. their banter while planting is perfect, they tease each other just enough, yet there's still an inherent intimacy to every action. miles' eyes occasionally get transfixed on watching as his husband's strong and dirt-covered hands do their work. miles loves being able to watch phoenix like this, as he seems so determined to everything to miles' liking. phoenix's eyes get transfixed on miles as well, observing the proud and smug look on his face that he has as he watches the vision he had come together. phoenix hopes that means he's doing a good job.
once they're done, they're still sitting amongst the flowers in the flowerbed. they're both leaning against each other, hands intertwined, feeling themselves melt into the comfort of one another. the heat is near unbearable, and their bodies ache from the work that they've put in all day, but they still love this. they know that they'll have to get up eventually, but it's a moment they wish they could hold onto forever. as the sun beams down on them, everything feels perfect. being cradled up next to each other is where they belong.
"thank you phoenix, this is beautiful," miles whispers.
"of course. you're beautiful too," phoenix replies, chuckling to himself before he places a kiss on miles' forehead.
