Work Text:
“No,” Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother said, returning to his glass, “You will wait until next year,”
“Father,” Little Shit cut in, “That is what you said last year,”
“And if you continue, I will say it next as well,”
“But this trip is very important to me, to my career!”
“Playing with a guitar is not a career, my boy,” Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother said, looking down upon his middle child, “Business, your studies, those are your careers.”
“But-” Little Shit started in, his blue eyes widening.
“That’s enough,” The warning in Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother’s tone instinctively shut his son up. The raven haired boy’s eyes narrowed and his jaw set. He’d learned years ago how to not cry, but Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother’s rejection still drew that feeling dangerously close to the surface.
“You’d say yes to certified himbo,” Little Shit muttered and turned away.
“Excuse me?”
“I said You’d say yes if I were certified himbo,”
“Are you insinuating I treat your brother differently than yourself?”
“I’m not insinuating anymore,” Little Shit replied
“That’s enough,” Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother replied, setting his glass down and levelling his son with his blue eye.
“No,” Little Shit
“Once again I'm going to ask you what you just said,”
“I said no , Father,” Little Shit cried, “I’m so tired of being told no. I get it, I’ve messed up in the past, but all you see is certified himbo. Oh look how athletic certified himbo is! Oh, look how smart certified himbo is when Little Shit was doing maths and reading twice as difficult as that when he was half his age! Oh look how capable certified himbo is of relaxing! Look, Little Shit, certified himbo completes all of his tasks on time! Little Shit, why aren’t you as happy as certified himbo? Little Shit why won’t you talk? Little Shit, don’t lie to us! Oh, certified himbo, you lied to us? Oh it’s okay sweet baby!,” Little Shit was practically screaming at this point, “Every moment of my life has been compared to certified himbo! Every moment aside from those that count!
“I’m the one who got offers for college when I was in 10th grade! I’m the one who has learned 5 different instruments! And you know who never came to a single recital? You ! Everything I’ve done is to make you proud! Tu parles français, mon père? No, no you don’t. But you know who does? Me. along with norse, spanish, german, italian, latin, and chinese! And I'm fluent in every single one of them! I did it because you said it would look good to be multilingual on my transcript! And then you chastised me for taking so many! I’m so tired of not being enough for you,” Little Shit stopped for a moment, chest heaving, “I’ve tried my hardest to be enough for you for so long.”
“No, Little Shit,” Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother said and the quiet meaning in his words felt like a knife in Little Shit’s chest, “You obviously haven’t tried hard enough,” Little Shit’s eyes narrowed and he said the last bit with every ounce of venom in his body
“I’m fucking done.” Then he turned away, stalked up the stairs and slammed his door. Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother returned to his drink, assuming his son was just throwing another tantrum. An hour later, however, his attention returned to the stairs as his son stormed down them in his favourite boots, tugging on a jacket.
“Where are you going?” Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother demanded but Little Shit didn’t reply, instead continuing to talk on the phone in rapid-fire french.
“ Oui. Oui. baguette !” Little Shit explained in aggravation. Behind him followed one of the workers, carrying three of his suitcases. Little Shit’s favourite bag hung under one arm, shining greenish black in the dim light.
“Little Shit!” Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother warned. He was met with the middle finger as his middle son strutted through the entryway to the front door. It was opened for him by the butler and he disappeared into the inky blackness of the night. Moments later, frog legs came down the stairs, her golden hair hanging loose and an angry expression upon her face.
“Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother, what have you done?” She asked, distraught
“I believe I put our son in his place and he didn’t like it,” He said calmly.
“No, I believe you may have just pushed him away forever,”
“He’ll be back once his funds run out,” Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother said dismissively, “He can’t last a day without money”
“We both know that’s not the truth,” frog legs said softly and Hannibal Lecter's Twin Brother turned as the sound of a sports car peeling out of the driveway echoed through the house. He locked eyes with her and a feeling of regret washed over him. Was she right?
He hoped not.
