Work Text:
“I have never felt as grown up in my life!” Kurt exclaimed as he ripped open one of the boxes. “We have our own apartment !”
Sebastian rolled his eyes fondly. “Yeah, yeah. I get it. Now, why don’t you stop talking and start unpacking?”
Kurt scoffed and dragged the box into his room. At least Sebastian had been kind enough to give him the bigger room. He opened the flaps to the box and looked at what was inside. He grinned as he pulled out the photo albums. They covered years of his and Sebastian’s lives. They had been best friends for as long as Kurt could remember, and had stayed together through everything. And now they were living together.
The only thing that could make Kurt happier is if they were more than best friends.
He sat crossed-legged on the carpeted floor and began to flip through one of the albums. It mostly included pictures from their senior year at Dalton, some of them were only from a few months ago. But to Kurt, it felt like he was looking at a stranger hugging Sebastian. He had grown up so much over the summer; new haircut, new wardrobe, new attitude. He had dropped most of the New Directions (although he had stopped talking to the majority of them when he had chosen to stay at Dalton), only staying in touch with Santana, Brittany, Mercedes, and Finn.
He was so engrossed with looking through the albums that he didn’t even hear Sebastian come in.
“Does this look like unpacking?” Sebastian chuckled and sat beside his best friend. He took the album from Kurt. “Hey, I remember this.” He pointed at a picture of himself, Kurt, Jeff, and Nick.
“Me too,” Kurt murmured. He rested his head on Sebastian’s shoulder, something he had done dozens of times yet felt strangely more intimate now.
“What’s up with you?” Sebastian said. “You’re like the king of organisation. I figured you’d have at least sorted your room by now.”
“I’m just excited. We’re roommates.”
“I know, but we’ve agreed since we were little kids that we’d live together at some point. It’s not like this is anything new.”
“Just let me enjoy this.”
Sebastian smiled. “Okay.”
“You guys are so boring!” Santana whined. Sebastian was sitting at the dining table, studying, while Kurt was sketching a new design for Isabelle, his boss at Vogue. “You’ve been in New York for, like, 2 months now, and you haven’t had one night out.”
“That would be the case,” Kurt muttered. “What’s your point?”
“Like I said: you’re boring. Especially you, Sebastian. You went from being the hotshot at Scandals to spending your Saturday nights playing Scrabble with Kurt.”
“Hey!” Kurt snapped.
“You’re right,” Sebastian said, closing his book. “Okay, Santana, what do you propose?”
Santana smirked. “I know just the place.”
Kurt looked anxiously around the club. He was holding tightly onto Santana’s hand; the two of them had lost Sebastian to the crowd the moment they had entered the club.
“So,” Santana said, “when are you going to make a move?”
“What?” Kurt tilted his head. “Move on what?”
“On Sebastian. I see the way you look at him; everyone does. I’m sure even he knows about your feelings.”
“Feelings?” Kurt rubbed the back of his neck. “I don’t have feelings.”
“Come on, Kurt. I bet if you told him how you felt, he’d tell you he felt the same.”
“I could never do that,” Kurt said. “You know how he is. He doesn’t do relationships.”
“Because you haven’t asked him-”
“Enough, Santana. I can’t- I wouldn’t be able to handle it if he rejected me. Things are perfect between us; I don’t want anything to change.”
“But-”
“I need a drink,” Kurt muttered. He shoved his way past people towards the bar, where he got himself a beer. Someone put their arm around him.
“Hey, Kurt,” Sebastian purred.
“Hey. Where did you go?”
Sebastian smiled. “Just talkin’ to people. What’s up?”
“Nothing.”
Sebastian chuckled. “Hey, wouldn’t it be super funny if you and me, like, kissed.”
“What?”
“You know, just to see what it was like. We grew up together, you know?”
Kurt stared at Sebastian, his mouth slightly open. “I…” He saw Santana look at him and nod her head “Okay.” He cupped Sebastian’s face and leaned in, connecting their lips.
“Mm,” Sebastian murmured. “I always knew you’d be a good kisser. Why haven’t you ever had a boyfriend?”
Because no one is you , Kurt thought. “Oh, you know me, Bas. I have ridiculously high standards.”
“And no one will ever meet them.”
You have.
“Jesus,” Sebastian moaned, emerging from his bedroom the next morning, “how much did I drink?”
“A lot,” Kurt said. He hadn’t drunk anything else; he wanted to savour the taste of Sebastian’s lips for as long as possible. “How much do you remember?”
“Not that much,” Sebastian muttered. “We kissed, right?”
“Yes.”
“That was just a- it didn’t mean anything, right? We’re just friends. No homo.”
“Right,” Kurt said, feeling his heart break.
“Did I throw up in your car?”
“Yeah. You also promised to clean it.”
“Damnit.”
Kurt rested his head on Santana’s lap, pouting. “And then he said it didn’t mean anything.”
“Sorry, Kurt.” Santana ran her fingers through his hair. “You should just tell him that it did mean something to you.”
“How can I? It’s obvious he doesn’t feel the same.”
“It isn’t. You never know. At least if you tell him, you’ll get a straight answer. Isn’t it worth the chance of being with him? He’s your best friend; you can have a relationship like me and Britt.”
Kurt smile. “That would be nice. But I just don’t know if I can take that risk… I’ve fantasied about being with him for so long and you know how college relationships are. They always end in a breakup.”
“Not always,” Santana pointed out.
“I just don’t think I could do it.”
“Okay, listen here, Timon,” Santana snapped, slamming the door to Sebastian’s bedroom shut.
“Santana,” he replied calmly, “what’s up?”
“You have probably the best guy ever in love with you and you aren’t going to do a thing about it?”
Sebastian narrowed his eyes. “Excuse me? Look, I doubt that whoever this is is the ‘best guy ever,’ and besides, I don’t do relationships.”
“And why the hell not?”
“Because,” Sebastian took a deep breath, “I’m saving myself for if or when Kurt feels the same.”
Santana stared at him for a few seconds then rolled her eyes. “Oh my God, you idiots. You losers really need to work on your communication.”
“What?”
“Kurt is in love with you.”
“He- He’s the guy?” Sebastian grinned. “I always thought… He never dated anyone else…”
“He was waiting for you. Not that either of you was ever going to make a move. You’re welcome.”
Sebastian felt like he was floating on air. Kurt wanted him. He wasn’t going to die alone!
“Now, what are you going to do?” Santana asked.
“What?”
“Well, obviously you have to go big. You better decide quickly; he’ll be home from work soon.”
“Right, yes.” This had to be perfect.
When Kurt left the Vogue office, he was exhausted. Work had been draining, and all he wanted to do was curl up on the couch beside Sebastian and watch a movie while eating takeout. But when he walked inside their apartment, the lights were off, and instead, candles lit up the room. Their dining table was set with a vase of roses in the centre and two plates opposite each other.
“You cooked?” Kurt asked. Sebastian had only ever cooked on Kurt’s birthday. “Is today an anniversary or something?” He couldn’t wrap his head around what was happening.
“Not an anniversary; though I’m hoping it will become one,” Sebastian said. He flashed Kurt his signature smirk.
“What are you getting at?”
“We’ve been friends for a long, long, long time.”
“That’s true.” Kurt chuckled.
“Maybe, finally, it’s time that we take this to the next level. As in, we go on a date.” Sebastian pulled out one of the chairs. “Care to join me for dinner?”
Kurt couldn’t keep the grin off of his face as he sat down. Sebastian poured them a glass of wine each. “I had no idea that you were into me like that,” Kurt said.
“How could I not be?”
“Well, just with everything you said and all the nights at Scandals…”
“You see, I thought that you weren’t interested in me.”
“That’s ridiculous. I am so obvious.”
“Let’s not dwell on it any longer, okay? Let’s just be happy that we finally have each other.”
