"mirei."
mirei stops what she's doing and looks up to meet ayaka's eyes.
"hmm? what is it?" she raises her eyebrows, waiting for the girl to continue.
"you're cooling my food for me again," ayaka stares. "why do you even do that anyways?" she asks.
mirei looks away, cheeks flushed. "it's just a habit of mine?" she replies as she scratches her nape sheepishly.
she can feel ayaka's eyes staring at her curiously but ayaka makes no further comment about it and mirei resumes what she was doing earlier, secretly glad that ayaka didn't question her further about it.
as unlikely as it sounds, mirei is actually a time traveller from the future and she developed different habits ever since she started going out with ayaka a year from now. for mirei, these are things she has learnt to do mindlessly but for ayaka who is totally clueless about the future, it is something unusual.
"mirei, this is the restaurant that i kept saying i wanted to go!" ayaka excitedly says as she tries to contain her excitement.
mirei couldn't help but let out a laugh at how cute ayaka's reaction was. "i knew you really wanted to try the food here, that's why i decided to bring you here for our first date."
the moment their food arrives, ayaka immediately starts taking photos of the food.
"you and your obsession with taking photos of food..." mirei shakes her head as she waits for ayaka to finish.
"ok, let's start eating!" ayaka quickly grabs her chopsticks and picks up a piece of meat.
"wait careful, the food is-" mirei tries to warn her.
"hot, hot!" ayaka immediately grabs the glass of water beside her and downs it in record time.
"you're too impatient, ayaka." mirei chides. "here, i'll cool the food down for you." she says.
ayaka watches as mirei slowly blows the food to cool it down and she smiles at how cute and concentrated the girl in front of her looks. mirei was always so thoughtful when it came to ayaka.
"now you can enjoy the food without scalding your tongue again." mirei says as she hands ayaka's plate to her.
"the food here really didn't disappoint," ayaka lets out a satisfied sigh as she starts eating.
"i'm glad, if not our first date would have been ruined already." mirei chuckles.
"but let me tell you something mirei," ayaka stops eating. "i think the food tasted better because you cooled it down for me." she leans in and whispers to mirei.
"well-" mirei tries to not stumble over her words. "if you want, i'll do it for you from now on." she whispers back to ayaka before turning away, trying to hide her blushing cheeks.
"i'll take your word for it then!" ayaka grins from ear to ear as she continues eating, a small blush forming on her cheeks too.
"hello? earth to mirei?" mirei breaks out from the memories of their supposed first date around a year later from this present day. she sees ayaka swinging her hands in front of her face.
"what are you even daydreaming about? i'm getting hungry already." ayaka whines like a child.
"i'm sorry, here you go." mirei passes ayaka's plate back to her, laughing at how childish the latter is currently acting right now.
ayaka takes a bite of the food and hums in satisfaction. "you know what mirei," she says. "somehow the food tastes better after you cooled it for me."
mirei feels her cheeks going red again, as she remembers future ayaka saying the same thing on their first date.
"don't worry ayaka, i'll always do it for you then." she smiles and starts eating her food too.
some things will never change, mirei thinks.
