Chapter Text
“So, you have 108 secret abilities, right Mokona?” Syaoran asked one calm afternoon.
“That’s right!” Mokona beamed, hopping up proudly.
“You’re making those up.” Kurogane tells her without looking up from his manga.
“Kuro-puu’s so mean! Mokona has abilities!” Mokona whined, jumping from Syaoran’s leg to land in the middle of Kurogane’s manga. “You have seen some of them!” She added imitating Kurogane’s grumpy voice, to prove the point.
Kurogane looked put out by this. Mokona could hear Fai snickering behind them.
“Ok, first of all never do that again.” Kurogane stated, still looking faintly uncomfortable. “Second, if they exist, are they any use or are they all for being annoying?”
Mokona headbutted him. “I can’t tell you! They’re a ~secret~”
“So, they’re fake.”
“Noo! They will come up when we need them!” Mokona assured him, kissing his nose and promptly causing the man to drop the manga and give chase.
They were stopping at a café in a town they had landed into some hours ago. Mokona was busy eating up the different pastries the group had ordered.
“Mokona sure is hungry.” Fai commented, patting her gently on the head.
“Do you need to eat, Moko-chan?” Sakura inquired, picking up a cookie.
“Nope, but food is tasty!”
“And what happens with the food once you eat it, if you don’t really need it?” Syaoran wondered as Kurogane grumbled something that sounded like why do we spend money on food for it then .
“Oh nothing happens to it! It stays inside Mokona!”
The silence in the table was deafening. Even Fai was regarding her oddly.
“So,” Syaoran started, breaking the silence. “Are you saying you don’t...have a digestive system?”
“Mokona doesn’t know what that means. But everything Mokona puts in her belly stays there! That’s one of Mokona’s 108 secret abilities.”
“Huh.” Syaoran says, brain gears going a mile per hour. “So is your belly like a pocket dimension or something?”
“Mokona doesn’t know what that means either!”
“You better not stain my sword with food in your black hole of a stomach, manjuu.” Kurogane threatened.
The woman in the hotel reception had caught Sakura’s attention with her bright pink hair and…
“What was that on her nose?” She asked the group as a whole, once they got their room key. “It looked like a sort of jewel…”
“That’s a piercing!” Mokona explained from inside Syaoran’s coat, startling the boy. “It’s like an earring, except the hole can be anywhere in the body.”
“Oh!”
“Mokona can make piercings!”
“...Oh?”
“That’s amazing!” Fai beamed.
“ How. ” Kurogane asked at the same time.
“Mokona can give you one if you want. But I can’t control when or where the piercing will appear.”
“That’s...a lot of information at once.” Sakura mumbled, dumbfounded.
“What even is the point of that ability?” Kurogane asked.
“To make piercings!”
“Well, I’m sure it’s a great ability, even if Kuro-skeptic doesn’t see it that way” Fai reassured Mokona.
They forgot about that particular ability until three worlds later, where the entire group found themselves trapped in cages in an underground kingdom.
“If we could distract the guards, I could break this stupid cage and get us out of here.” Kurogane whispered, scanning the prison for anything to use.
“How, though? He can’t hear us but he can certainly shoot us if we try anything.” Syaoran wondered from the nearby cage.
“Mokona can help!” Mokona announced from her tiny bird cage, hung to the wall between their cells.
Kurogane raised an eyebrow. “How?”
“Hey guards!” She shouted, caching the guards' attention. “Do you want a piercing?”
“How would that help?” Kurogane whisper-shouted.
“She doesn’t control when and where they appear.” Fai explained from Kurogane’s right. “So it’s something like a surprise stabbing.”
“Didn’t think the manjuu had violence in her.”
“Mokona doesn’t control the piercing, so it’s not Mokona’s fault if they get hurt.”
(the guards do accept the piercing. The next morning, the group takes advantage of the random holes in the guards eyes and feet to escape. They don’t mention it again)
Mokona found Fai sitting outside the inn one night. There were bags under his eyes and a glassy, far away look in his eyes. Mokona was immediately worried and hurried to comfort him.
The look was gone once he noticed her, replaced with one of his weird smiles.
“Hello Moko-chan!” He said, lending a hand to her to hop into. “I hope I didn’t wake you.”
“You didn't!” Mokona assured him. “Did Fai have a bad dream?”
The faraway look was back for a second as Fai answered, “Something like that.”
“Mokona can make your dreams better!”
Fai laughed. “I know, you do make things easier with your presence.”
“No, I meant literally! Mokona can manipulate dreams.”
Fai went still, face frozen in a smile.
“It’s one of Mokona’s abilities.” She explains when he keeps silent.
“...That’s...great.” Fai says after a moment. “I will have to pass. Also, is better if you don’t use that ability without permission, ok?”
“Of course! That would be rude!”
“Never change, Mokona.”
Syaoran and Kurogane were being chased by a big, scary monster! Mokona was hanging to Kurogane’s coat for dear life, trying to figure out how to help her friends.
They managed to get the upper hand of the chase for a minute, hiding behind a large rock.
“We’re gonna have to fight it.” Kurogane said, ignoring the injury on his arm.
“You shouldn’t fight, Kurogane-san. Leave it to me.”
“Kid, that thing would use you as a toothpick.”
“Maybe Mokona could eat it!”
Kurogane and Syaoran just looked at her. Huh, weird. Mokona was sure that had been very clear.
“You know, like the swords and our stuff?” She clarified, even though that didn’t seem to help.
“Please don’t eat it.” Syaoran looked pale. Oh no!
“Remember. Mokona doesn’t eat like you do! The monster would be alive, just not here for the moment. Mokona could spit it up somewhere when you figure out how to fight it.”
“So you can just...drag people in there?” Kurogane asked, poking her belly.
“I eat you in there all the time to get to new worlds! It’s one of my abilities.”
“ Please don’t call it that.” Syaoran pleaded.
Their conversation was interrupted by a thunderous roaring way too close for comfort.
“Mokona knows how to solve this!”
“Does it involve one of your abilities?” Kurogane asked, the faintest touch of dread in his voice.
“yes!”
“Don’t.” Kurogane said, resolute.
“Wahhh,” Mokona cried. “I thought Kurogane wanted to know about Mokona’s 108 secret abilities?”
“I think I know enough of them.”
