Wes grinned as another squint vaporized into nothingness. "That’s four for me. What’s your count?"
He chuckled as he heard Hobbie’s voice crackling through the communicator. Wes could hear the mournful tone even through the static accompanying the words.
"I got three, but I thought you said we weren’t keeping score this time."
"Where’s the fun in that?"
Hobbie’s sigh was the only answer Wes received. A few moments later the starfield went black as he heard the familiar hiss of the simulator pod opening. Wes climbed out, pulled his helmet off, and ran a gloved hand through his damp hair. "Admit it, you had fun."
Hobbie was already frowning as he pulled off his own helmet. Finally, he sighed. "Okay fine, it was fun. However, if Gavin finds out we’ve been stealing his simulators to play fighting games again, he’s going to be annoyed."
Wes’s grin widened as he turned and watched the man approaching from the simulator control center. "Who do you think was running this little exercise?"
Hobbie watched as Gavin approached, then turned to Wes. "You woke me up, made me sneak out here in the middle of the night so we wouldn’t get caught again, and you already had permission?"
"Basically."
"You do realize I’m going to get you back for this, right?"
Wes chuckled as he draped his arm over Hobbie's shoulder. "I wouldn’t have it any other way."
