magnets and happy endings

Work Text:

Not even as the years passed could Grant forget how he felt on May 2nd, 1998.

He knew that Remus was out there, battling evil in the Wizarding World, he did. Remus himself would send Grant letters, some brisk and short, but others quite lengthy.

That night, Grant had not received a letter from Remus in months, but he never let himself think of what could have happened to the man.
After all, Remus was dealing with things Grant could not even imagine. And as much as it pained Grant, he knew he could not do anything about it outside of comforting Remus to the best of his abilities. No matter how minimum the said abilities were.

He was sitting down, and looking back, Grant was glad he was not standing because he was sure he would have fallen right as he felt a pain he could not recognize.

It was as if he felt nothing but also everything at the same time. As if the line that once connected him to Remus had been cut.
All the years, all the kisses, all the tears, all the comfort he had ever felt had been taken away in just a quick moment.

His body hurt, but not like his heart was torn up straight from his chest, but as if a new space inside his chest opened, and there was nothing that could fill it.
He felt empty, empty from the memories even though he knew he could never forget the boy who brought magic to him.

He hoped the pain was just from the cigarettes, from the drinking, maybe sickness had finally caught up to him. He knew it ought to happen someday.
He hoped even if he knew there was little chance for that to happen.

He left Remus once. It was only fair for Remus to return the favor.

Grant thought back to when Sirius died, Remus' words still etched into his brain.
"Sirius no longer with us. Gone."

Have Remus and Sirius reunited?
They had such little time, thrown into war, was this the start to Remus' happy ending?

God knows he deserved one.
If anyone in the world deserved a happy ending it would have been Remus Lupin.

Grant knew he could never bring Remus the happy ending he deserved. No matter how much love Grant gave, Remus needed someone else's love.
And that was okay, really.

He was happy to take care of him, to show him he was not alone. Even if that meant when the time came, Grant himself would be alone.

The more he thought about it, the more he realized Remus had battled his life away his entire existence.

So Grant cried.
He cried for the boy he met that summer day.
He cried for the love he felt with every letter he received.
He cried for himself.

And he cried for all the people who had never met their Remus Lupin, because he didn't know what would have happened to him if he didn't.

And you know, Grant would see Remus again.
In this lifetime or in another.

Because after all, they are magnets. They always snap back together again.
