Work Text:
The young blonde's heart sunk to the bottom of her stomach like cement in a vast ocean. An eviction notices knife like hard glare looking her in the face, a dare to do something, anything. Entering her soon-to-belong-to-someone-else apartment with shoulders raised and a calm facade the paigtailed girl went along the not so winding path of her hallway. Feet numb from the cold fall morning, tile floors serving the occasional harsh sting of pain in the metaphorically dead souls of her feet, then stepping on something.
"Argh!" The pink clad woman cried out, casting away the devilish poker that found its way onto her foot into the void.. and by that I mean in her pained frustration she threw it on the floor in some vague direction somewhere that her poor foot would probably be reintroduced to sometime later. Bursting through her bathroom door and slamming it shut so hard some of the wood chipped off she slid down the door in despair. Covering her face little hitches of breath started to escape her, the hitches then turned into sobs, and the sobs evolved into gut wrenching screams. After the sun fully went down she stopped throat sore and head fuzzy from the lack of oxygen.
Pulling herself out of the tub she gathered her resolve. There had to be a solution, maybe she could beg her landlord for more time to pay her rent if it came to that, ever since her boyfriend broke things off she hadn't been able to get enough money for rent. The chair squeaked underneath her as she settles her weight on it. She pops her knuckles to relieve the pressure in them before typing in her computer. Jobs near me.
No she's already tried that and hasn't gotten a follow up from a single one of them, unless it was to tell her she couldn't get the job. She'd just have to sell her stuff then. Setting off on an aimless scavenger hunt throughout her house she turned everything over, no literal or metaphorical rock left unturned and she owned quite a few that she took from her favorite childhood parks. Gathering everything in a pile it looked a little pathetic or magnificent depending on who you are. Some funko figures, some special addition Comic-Con dolls, most of her J merch, and some clothing that was a size too small for her now.
Ringing, ring, ring. 'C'mon Jerry pick up!' She thought to herself. Jerry was her landlord and old friend, he'd hopefully give her a second chance. The phone went straight to voicemail instead of anything useful, with a sigh she went back to her computer that she'd have to sell soon, gods she'd miss steam games. An email notification takes her out of her thoughts.
Checking it she discovers it's a response and she now has a job as a retail worker. When Jerry calls back later he gives her two months time to collect rent money. While working at target wasn't an ideal job for the young woman it did create time for her to people watch and that was a favorite past time of the girls. Hearing the name Jenny slip out of someone's mouth she decided to head towards the group of teens she heard it from and busied herself pretending to be refolding a stack of clothes. Jenny is the name of a famous pop musician that's been rapidly climbing the top one hundred.
Beautiful and talented Jenny was the envy of everyone. Even she had to admit that she did occasionally fan girl over her, even buying some of her merchandise embarrassingly enough. She still does have one piece of it left, a poster of the brunette belting her heart out, head thrown back and light from the stage illuminating her, giving off an otherworldly appearance, that the spectacle wearing girl couldn't bear to part with. The teens spoke about how Jenny was going on tour, travailing the world, living her dreams, and coming to their city in a few months. An ache in her heart told her she needed to go or she'd never get another chance like it again.
But she could also never hope to afford it with the way things were currently going. She'd need more jobs, no matter where they came from. Going back home she sat down on the bed and it groaned almost in greeting. All of her furniture seemed to do that nowadays. But there always was a chance that there was hope for her.
In her desperate situation she was finally considering the words of what she thought was a senile old man, one day at her local library, before she had a phone or computer so she'd had to use the library's free use computers to find work or entertain herself. That day however she wanted more out of her life and her current situation was just not cutting it, so she held her head in her hands and willed herself to keep the tears in, to keep her resolve strong. She wished she could be someone else most days, someone like Jenny. At times she asked herself "what would Jenny do?" but she just didn't know anymore.
Feeling a light tap on her shoulder she raised her head out of her hands to come face to face with an aging man, white at his temples and devoid of youth, but smile lines stood out on his cheeks. "Miss," and old voice said to her, "there is no reason to be sad for I have the book that will solve all of your woes in life." With the a book was placed in front of her and he had turned away before she even got a word out. Now she just had to find the book, it was in her house somewhere. But she had renovated her house a month ago and hadn't seen it?
Where could it be hiding. She checked her closet, drawers, leftover boxes, and everywhere else she could think of. After a few hours of this searching her back ached and she decided to call it a day. Until her foot collided with something heavy under her bed. "Ouch!"
She said to herself even though it didn't hurt. Looking under the bed she found a heavy red leather bound book. This was the book the old man had gifted to her. She skimmed the pages until she got a paper cut, on the page with a body swapping spell. And it was so easy all that was needed was a simple incantation and have written consent. She'd go to the signing and steal Jenny's body.
