Work Text:
You don't know how Bokuto managed to do all this under your breath, you really don't. You peg yourself to be quite the observant type; not as much as Bokuto himself, but just enough to pick up any unusual cues that came from him. For some reason, he was able to prevent himself from tipping you off with what he has planned for your anniversary; really, you have to give it to him, he's outdone himself.
He has you sitting on a chair that was prepared for you in the middle of their volleyball court, sun well past the horizon, your boyfriend and his friends showing you quite an staggering performance.
An instrumental of Big Time Rush's 'Boyfriend' is playing on their portable speaker, loud enough to have it echoing in the whole gymnasium. Seven years with him since the last year of high school, and he still keeps his inane ideas brewing in there. He has Kuroo, Akaashi, and, amazingly, Tsukishima, roped into this, all of them (except Kuroo) forced to act as his background singers, imitating the autotuned hums and repeated 'hey's of the original song.
"All I really want to be," he winks at you, your stifled chuckle escaping you. "is your boyfriend, can't fight that."
You can only rest your face in your hands, getting overwhelmed at the thoughtfulness of your boyfriend, or the embarrassment you can feel for the two unwilling participants in this room, you can't tell.
You lift your head back to face them, tears in your eyes, and Bokuto was about to end it all, thinking he was upsetting you, til you started laughing, your breath leaving you every time you try to get a word out of your mouth.
Bokuto continues his charade, happy at your reaction, and hypes his wingmen even more, his boisterous singing voice booming, until the instrumental finally comes to a stop, ended by Tsukishima and Akaashi’s poor imitation of the autotuned vocals.
Bokuto's sweating by the end of it somehow; singing making him break out a sweat. He puts the bluetooth microphone down—a last minute purchase on his end, thinking it would give an even better impression on you—and takes the flowers and gift Akaashi was holding out for him to give to you, both thoughtfully picked out by your eccentric boyfriend.
He kneels in front of you, offering you the bouquet and his gift like a knight would offer his own sword, and that prolongs your bouts of laughter even more.
"Please, honey, you're making it harder to breathe right now," you muster in between your laughs. "when - just, when—?"
"Akaashi and Kuroo were in town," Bokuto sheepishly replied. "thought it was a great idea for our seventh."
"And Tsukishima—?" you ask, his name left out of his statement as Bokuto explained.
"Dragged me from the next town over," Tsukishima huffed. You heave a deep breath, trying to stop the bundles of laughs from escaping your throat. It was all just too much; maybe it was from the accumulated workload earlier that kept you from distributing your laughter today, or that Bokuto's idea broke your laughter meter completely. Most likely both.
"All of this was impromptu," Akaashi chimes, lowering the speaker's volume, keeping the instrumental on loop. "your boyfriend kept us in Kuroo's hotel room til we memorized our parts."
"Have to say, getting drunk in the middle of it worked." Kuroo comments offhandedly, snickering.
Tsukishima disagrees, moaning how he had to rush to memorize his assigned parts during his work breaks. Kuroo starts poking fun at him, trying to have Tsukishima admit to the fact that he was feigning interest in the whole thing, and their bickering starts, with Akaashi observing the free entertainment he was given.
You turn back to your boyfriend, still kneeling. You take the bouquet and the box, ushering him to stand up.
"Was this bought on the spot too?" you chuckle, mindlessly opening the small box.
"Nope! This part was planned." he chirps, still keeping one knee down on the floor, one of his hands finding purchase on your face.
"Marry me?"
