Work Text:
Kita places the ace of hearts on the table, flicking his eyes towards his opponent in anticipation of her next move.
Suna contemplates her hand, taking a sip of her wine. The three of spades, seven of clubs, eight of hearts, ten of spades, king of diamonds, and the two of diamonds.
“Pass.”
He flicks his eyes once more from the cards in his hands to his opponent before picking up the cards on the table and putting them aside. He starts the next round by playing a five of hearts.
They’ve been at it for quite some time now, playing cards silently under the dim, orange light of the bar lounge, the noise in the room dwindling as the night progressed. Suna is aware that Kita knows she didn’t call him down here just to play cards, but she hasn't yet told him what was on her mind, couldn’t quite find the words. And yet, Kita hasn’t asked her about it once. He’s just that kind of guy; kind and patient, he never rushes you to tell him what’s wrong, and a lot of the time, people find that simply spending some time with him is all they really needed in that moment.
Suna begins tapping her foot, sipping on her wine and laying the eight of hearts down on the table. “Eight stop.” She’s starting to grow anxious. The reason she felt the need to call Kita, the thoughts she’s thinking right now, aren’t something she thinks can simply be waved away by playing cards with somebody, even if that somebody has the sort of warm, calming aura of the person sitting across from her right now. But she just can’t figure out how to put it into words.
She pauses for a while, deliberating over her words, before picking up the cards on the table to put them aside, starting the next round by playing the seven of clubs. She feels she needs to say something, anything.
“I feel… trapped,” she whispers.
Kita flicks his eyes towards Suna, playing the nine of spades. “Whaddya mean?” he asks in his calm, unwavering voice.
She bites her bottom lip, wondering how to phrase it. “Like… I feel like I’m trapped at the bottom of a deep well. I can try and climb out at any time, but if I do, I get drenched in water coming in from the top with the force of a waterfall. It makes it nearly impossible to get to the top. I’ve tried so many times to get out. I even managed to get to the top once, before being dropped all the way back down again.” She places the ten of spades down on the table.
Kita hums in consideration, playing the queen of clubs. “Have you tried calling out for help?”
Suna looks at Kita. It was an obvious suggestion, one she’s already thought of.
“The well’s too deep, no one can hear.” She sets down the king of diamonds.
“I see.” He plays the ace of clubs. “So, what now?”
She shrugs, placing the two of diamonds. “I guess I’ll just wait until someone notices me and decides to help.”
Glancing at her once more, Kita plays a joker. “So, yer just gonna wait until somebody saves you?” It’s faint, but Suna can hear the hint of worry in Kita’s voice.
She glances momentarily at the last card in her hand, the 3 of spades, before setting it down on top of the joker.
“It’s ok. I’m a patient person.” She drinks the last few drops of her wine and stands up to leave.
