"I'm starting to believe in Bridget's comment less and less with every one of these stories."
Magnus laughed and sipped his wine. "It's not that bad."
"Scones, Magnus! He didn't even like scones! And I'm also named after him. By the Angel, Lightwoods are a disaster."
"Well, I wouldn't exactly put it like that."
Alec stared at him. "Do you not remember how I fell down the fucking stairs after our first date?"
Magnus rolled his eyes in response. "Alright, I retract my statement. But not all of them were a disaster."
"Oh, good. Please, tell me more about them."
"Well—actually, come to think of it, Lightwood men have pretty much all been disasters. It's the women who had any game, ever."
Alec groaned. "That's so unfair."
Magnus grinned. "So, there was Anna Lightwood. She was… well, people would say she was an enigma. But I didn't think that. She had impeccable fashion sense, for one. And she acted like a heartbreaker—even was one—but she also found someone she loved more than anything."
"Who?" Alec asked curiously.
"Her name was Kamala. They were a sweet pair." Magnus smiled. "And then there was her brother Christopher. A genius boy."
"He's the one who invented fire messages, right?"
Magnus nodded. "He is. He was also very charming. Had a good relationship with his cousin Thomas."
"Thomas. Right. The Gay Disaster."
"Alexander!"
"What?! I say that affectionately! Look at me. I was a Gay Disaster too."
"Still are," Magnus muttered.
Alec narrowed his eyes, "What was that?"
"Nothing," Magnus said and pecked Alec's lips. "Shall I continue?"
Alec nodded. "So, Anna and Christopher were Gabriel's children. And Thomas had two sisters?"
Magnus nodded. "Poor Barbara was taken from them too soon, but she was a headstrong woman. Just like Eugenia. She carried herself so well after what happened with her."
Alec smiled and looked off the balcony into the setting sun. He thought about his ancestors, about what they had survived. He wondered if he'd even be here if things had gone differently, if they hadn't been able to endure what they did. He thought of Gideon and Gabriel, of how they fought for the right side, even when it meant killing their father; of Anna and Thomas, who were just like him, but perhaps braver; of Christopher and Eugenia, who never let the society define their worth.
He was broken out of his train of thoughts by a hand caressing the back of his neck. "What are you thinking about?" Magnus asked softly.
Alec looked back at his husband and smiled. "Just how strong Lightwoods have always been."
Magnus' gaze softened, and he nodded. "They have."
"But I still can't believe one of them turned into a worm."
Magnus laughed contagiously, making Alec laugh too. "Yeah, well, don't forget about the one who was an evil bitch."
"Magnus! Language."
"You know it's true," Magnus said with a shrug.
Alec rolled his eyes, but didn't disagree. "Well, you're a Lightwood now too," he said with a grin.
