Work Text:
When it first started, it was odd, to say the least. Asahi, Suga, and Daichi were outside chatting before practice when Daichi noticed the tall, white-haired Date Tech student walk. Daichi stopped talking, which made Suga look at him.
“Dai you-oh my,” Suga said.
“What is it-” Asahi turned in the direction they were looking at to see the Date Tech student.
“Isn’t that-”
“Yup,” Daichi said, finishing his boyfriend’s sentence.
Aone walked right up to Asahi, moved his hands from behind his back to present...five roses in a red-colored small pot. Thye looks beautiful. Asahi looked into Aone's eyes and noticed the blush on his cheeks. Aone pushed his hands that held the flowers to Asahi, silently asking him to take them. Asahi slowly cupped his hands around Aone’s to take the flowers.
“T-Th-thank you,” he said, gulping in nervousness.
Aone opened his mouth to say something but decided against it. He turned on his heels and left the trio behind, completely confused.
“Dude, what was that about,” Daichi asked.
“Are you okay?” Suga asked, moving to Asahi's side to look at the flowers.
“Yeah. I'm...yeah, I’m fine. I should get ready for practice,” Asahi quickly ran to the club room and placed the flower carefully behind his backpack, and ran back to the gym. Practice went on as normal, the flower still not leaving his mind. When he walked home with Noya, he carried the flowers.
“Hey, what’s with the flower, Asahi!” Noya asked.
“Well, umm...well..listen, Noya, you don't worry about it, okay.”
“Who gave them to you? Do I know them? Is it a girl? Or a boy? Are they pretty?” Noya asked.
“It um...it was...well, remember that one guy from Date Tech who somehow became friends with Hinata?”
“Yeah! Why-”
Asahi didn’t say anything, hoping that Noya would get it. Noya paused for a second from his walking when it hit him.
“NO FUCKING WAY!”
“Noya, hush! People might be sleeping,” Asahi said.
“Wait, do you like him back! Did he leave a note!”
“Noya, stop screaming!” Asahi ordered in a hushed shout.
“Sorry,” Noya said, covering his mouth.
“I...I don’t know if I like him or not. I mean, the flowers were sweet; I won’t lie about that, but... he didn't leave a note or anything. Like he almost said something, but he left,” Asahi said.
“Well, do you not like the flowers?”
“Maybe it's just a one-time thing, Noya? I doubt it will be anything big,” Asahi said as they came to where they would part ways.
“See ya tomorrow, Asahi!” Noya said as he ran the rest of the way home.
“Bye, Noya!” Asahi walked the rest of the way home.
When he got home, his mother was in the kitchen while his father was typing away at his laptop at the table.
“Welcome home, sweetie,” his mom said.
“Hi, mom.”
“How was school?” His dad said.
“Good,” he took off his shoes and went to the kitchen.
He gave his mom a short hug and kissed her on the cheek before clapping his hand on his father’s shoulder.
“Hey, who gave the flowers?” his dad said once he looked up.
“Um, it was a gift from the school. Random people were passing them out to everyone, and you know I can’t say no,” Asahi lied.
“Well, they look nice. Try not to kill them," she warned. “Dinner will be ready in 10 minutes."
“I’m washing up,” Asahi ran up the stairs to go put the flowers on his desk and clean up.
The flowers didn’t stop plaguing his mind for the rest of the night. The next day no one mentioned the flowers until the following Friday. After practice once again on this new Friday, there was Aone, another pot of flowers in his hand passed them to Asahi and then left. This time they were an array of daisies. And then the Friday after that, it was another set of roses. This time the third years went for their monthly boba date, allowing Kiyoko the chance to ask the question rattling her mind,
“So what’s up with the flowers,” she said.
“I have no idea. He just comes to every Friday without fail and gives them and leaves. It's like a habit. ”
“Well, you could say no,” Daichi said as Suga ordered for the both of them.
“I don’t wanna be rude. Plus, I think they're pretty,” Asahi blushed at the last thought.
“Well, do you like him?” Suga asked.
“I haven’t really given it much thought since the last game we had with date tech. But...I guess he seems nice. I want to get to know him more, but I don’t know-how. He leaves the flowers and goes.”
“Then why not stop and ask him?” Daichi asked.
“...he leaves in a rush, and I don’t wanna bother him,” Asahi said, blushing.
“Oh, Asahi,” Kiyoko groaned.
“Look, either you just keep accepting flowers till you graduate, or you say something. It's pretty simple at this point," Daichi explained as the waitress brought them their drinks.
Asahi sighed as the topic switched, his eyes shifting back to the flowers.
Across the way, Futakuchi knew that something was off with Aone. Even though he was quiet when it came to his feelings, the whole team knew that something was off just by the small ways he expresses himself. Their coach had left for the day, and they were cleaning up for the night.
“Aone, are you okay?” he asked.
All he received was a nod as he picked up the rest of the balls.
“Are you sure? You seemed more spaced out than usual?”
Aone looked at his captain and frowned before saying, “I don’t think I’m doing it, right?”
“Doing what right?” Futakuchi asked.
Aone paused to gather his thoughts before saying, “I tried telling him how I felt, and I am not sure that it’s working.”
Futakuchi sat on the floor and motioned to his spot next to him. “Do I know this guy?”
Aone nodded.
“Does he go to our school?”
Aone shook his head.
"So a different school?”
Aone nodded.
"Do they play volleyball?"
Aone nodded.
"Is it Nekoma? They have some cute boys, I guess," the captain said unsurely.
Aone aggressively shook his head.
"Karasuno?”
Aone nodded with a blush.
“Oh, please don't tell me it's the short blocker I am actually going to los-”
“I respect him, but no,” Aone said in a rush.
“Hm. The captain?”
Aone shook his head.
“A blocker then?”
Aone shrugged, not really knowing how to answer.
"Well, the other blond and freckles can't be it. It's not the shortie. Not the captain. I refuse to believe it's the bald guy or the other short-the-tall dude who broke through your block!" Futakuchi explained before the answer hit him.
Aone's blush deepens, giving away the answer.
“Wow, that’s....that surprising. But I support you a hundred percent. I’m sure the rest of the team will do the same, but it's just surprising. You know with how close you are with shortie,” Futakuchi said.
Aone nodded while pulling his knees to his chest.
“So for the past what month now you've been going to Karasuno on Fridays. Don't you need permission to go to another school?"
Aone nodded again.
“Well, what do you do?”
“I give him flowers. Flowers are romantic.”
"That's very true. Flowers are very romantic. How long have you felt like this?"
"I'm not sure. Just one day, I kept thinking about him, and then I asked my cousin, and he said I might have a crush, so I just assumed he was right since I didn't think he was wrong."
“Okay, that's cool. So you two have been texting, right?"
Aone opened his mouth to say yes because, of course, he would. That is the most logical thing to do; give them your number so you can make a second connection. The only problem was that Aone’s voice could not form the words to say ‘yes.
“Aone, really?”
Aone moved his head into his arms, trying his best to sink into the wooden gym floor.
"That would explain why he isn't responding the way you want. He has no clue how to contact you."
"That's probably correct," Aone said.
“Look, tomorrow is Friday. Just make sure when you give him the plant give him your number. Or better yet, make a card.”
Aone nodded as he made a mental note.
"Now come on, let's finish cleaning up," Futakuchi stood before extending his hand to help Aone up.
The day flew by; it was the end of the school day. At practice, he brought the plant with him and made sure his phone number was on the card, sticking out of the soil. He tried his hardest to focus on what he was doing throughout practice, but all he could do was think of Asahi. Right around the time, it s for him to leave, he practiced what he was going to say one last time as he waved goodbye to his teammate. Grabbing his bag and his plant, he rushed out the door heading to Karasuno. He didn't realize just how nervous he was until he reached the campus. Like yes, he has done this several other times, but this time a lot was riding on getting this perfect. He walked into the school's courtyard, summoned all of the courage, and waited patiently for Karasuno practice to let out. It took bot five minutes before Asahi, and a few of his friends came out of the gym, heading to the stairs. The shorter one with a single strip on the front part of his hair noticed him.
“Asahi!” he shouted while jabbing Asahi’s side.
Asahi shouted in surprise before turning around to look at him.
“What Noy-” he stopped when he noticed that Aone was right there.
Aone and Asahi stared at each other for a moment before they began walking to each other. When they met in the middle, Aone pushed the plotted plant to Asahi’s chest, a blush filling his cheeks.
“T-thank you,” Asahi said.
Aone nodded before reaching into the plant to pull out the card from the soil and held it to Asahi. Asahi hesitantly took the card before Aone turned to head home. But he was soon yanked back by...Asahi latching onto his wrist.
“Wait. I” he took a moment to calm himself before continuing, “I don’t understand what this means. This is the fourth time you’ve done this, and..why are you doing this?”
Aone tried to find the words he rehearsed, but soon they left his mind. He took a breath before saying.
“I think you're really handsome. Or Pretty. Whichever word you want to use. You are powerful and strong and nice, and I want to go n a date with you,” Aone said before slapping his hand over his mouth.
WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY!
“This isn’t a joke? Right?” Asahi asked slowly after a moment of pause.
Aone shook his head enthusiastically.
“I...I think I like you too,” Asahi said.
Aone blinked for a few minutes, processing what happened before a giant smile came to his face. Aone pulled Asahi into a tight hug, nuzzling his face into his neck while cupping the back of Asahi’s head. They held each other in the embrace for several minutes before they pulled away to look into each other eyes.
“If you have the time Aone, would you like to get boba with me?” Asahi asked.
Aone couldn’t have nodded faster even if he wanted to.
