Work Text:
A soft hum filled the air, a tune that Pansy was sure that she had heard before but at the same time she thought that Daphne could have been making it up on the spot. She let herself listen as she stirred from the afternoon nap that she had so sorely needed even though she was sure that this particular song was intended only for the baby growing in the belly that Daphne was drawing soft patterns over.
Pansy allowed herself to watch her best friend. It was a private moment, but the two of them had shared everything for as long as she could remember - not to mention the fact that she couldn't exactly roll over and pretend that she was still asleep. That trick would have worked on Theo, or even Neville, but Daphne would see right through it, so instead she decided to alert Daphne to her awakened state by faking a yawn and stretching dramatically, though as it turned out she did really need to stretch.
"Morning sleepy head." Daphne greeted her, sending her a soft smile as she shifted her position ever-so-slightly.
Pansy didn't reply, at least not right away. She was lost in her head, in thoughts of how good a mother Daphne was going to be, how she couldn't wait to be the best aunt that she could possibly be. She could understand in that moment exactly why Daphne had decided to keep her baby, why she hadn't made the decision to terminate her pregnancy when she had found out that she was having a stranger's baby and why she had decided that it was okay to 'throw her life away'.
She drew in a deep breath before she pulled herself to sit up in the bed. "How long was I out?" She asked as she stretched out and then she laid her head on Daphne's shoulder. "Please tell me you got some sleep too?"
"I dozed." Daphne said with a small shrug. "Don't worry about it, okay? But you were out long enough for me to need to go and shower so that I at least look presentable for tonight."
"You don't need to make an effort, Daff. You don't even want this…" She pointed out, even though both of them knew that in a roundabout way, she did want this for completely different reasons to the ones that her parents had.
"I'm still going to shower." Daphne said with a soft chuckle before she pushed off the bed, leaving Pansy to fall back onto the pillows.
She stared at the ceiling for a moment before she swung her legs off of the bed. "I guess I should get going, huh?" She hummed, part of her hoping that Daphne would turn around and say that she wanted Pansy there with her but knowing that it was highly unlikely that her parents would allow such a thing. As it was, this whole deal was fragile and Pansy's presence could knock the arrangement in a direction that they didn't want. If things fell through with Adrian then it would be back to the drawing board and Pansy knew that there weren't many other Pureblood families that were desperate to climb the social ladder.
"I'll floo you tomorrow when I've managed to process this whole evening, when I've met Adrian properly and figured out what his whole deal is. Maybe I'll get lucky like you and he'll be open to a deal like you and Theo have got."
Pansy gave a soft sigh. "I'm not sure I'd call that luck." She said quietly. "He got his lawyer involved so that we would have the best for both of us, so that I could have Neville and he could have Percy." She shook her head before she stood up, her eyes glancing out of the window at the sun that was starting to set on the horizon now. "The things that you're going to have, the life that you're going to have, it's going to be so much more amazing than anything we could have engineered with a contract. And I hope that one day you'll be able to see that."
Daphne pressed a kiss to Pansy's cheek. "You know, I'm actually lucky to have you in my life, Pans. You're the amazing one."
Pansy couldn't help but shake her head at that, as much as she wanted to believe that she made that much of a difference in anyone's life, let alone Daphne's, she just wasn't there. But she would work on it. She knew that she had to work on it so that she could be the best person that she could be. The children in her care and now Daphne's baby needed her to be the best version of herself and in order to do that she needed to start to believe the things that people told her.
"I love you, Daffy." She said softly, squeezing Daphne's arm gently before she turned towards the door. "We'll talk tomorrow and you can fill me in." She paused for a moment before turning to face Daphne for one last word. "At least Adrian's a dish, right? It can't hurt to have some eye candy to look at."
This earned her a laugh from her best friend. "That's very true. Now get out of here before I send you in my place instead."
