Chapter 1: Running

Chapter Text

“Then let me take the first step,” Raya said as she walked forward and handed Namaari her gem piece.

Raya then looked up at Namaari with hope and then slowly walked backward, almost immediately being turned to stone by the Druun. Her friends all stared in shock watching their friend being turned into a statue, Raya’s hands cupped as the Druun moved away from her.

“Raya!” Boun yelled the shock in his voice, watching another person close to him being turned to stone.

Namaari’s eyes widened as she watched her enemy if she could even call her that anymore, being turned to stone. She then looked over to her side, watching Boun walk over with his gem piece. Namaari watched as the boy handed it to her, and then hugged Raya’s leg as he was turned to stone as well. The rest of Raya’s friends followed giving her their gem pieces and then turning to stone as well until she was the only one left.

Quickly getting over her shock, she used the fading powers of the gem pieces to protect herself from the Druun as she heard a crack open up in the rubble with a loud noise. Namaari saw the sky from the crack and ran towards it, climbing the fallen rubble. She was about to leave the cave they had been trapped under, until she looked back to see Raya’s friends, and more specifically to see Raya.

This was the same Raya she had betrayed when she was younger. The same Raya who had lived six years of her life alone, looking for Sisudatu. The same Raya she had hunted. The same person she thought she hated.

There was nothing for her and her people, anymore. Her mother; the Chief of Fang was stone, all the water had disappeared from Fang, Fang was destroyed, Sisu was dead, and the Druun was ramped.

Namaari ran back down the rubble, away from safety, and quickly put the gem pieces back together. She stepped back and walked towards Raya, as the gem seemed to glow with less and less power. She looked at Raya’s statue and put her hand on Raya’s shoulder, as the Druun swept over her and turned her into stone as well. The magic of the gem seeming to be completely gone.

__________

Suddenly, Namaari felt herself breathe as the rain loosened her joints, turning her back into herself. She looked over to see Raya’s friends Boun, Tong, Noi, and the Ongis returning back to normal, feeling relief course through her, but she felt her heart constrict again as she looked towards Raya. She felt the cold stone shoulder under her hand, as she looked at the others who were also staring in shock.

Raya was still stone, a statue, frozen in the same position she was in before Namaari had turned to stone.

They had all comeback, why not her? Namaari felt her eyes water staring at Raya, unable to comprehend everyone else’s panic, as she did the thing she was ready to do before; she ran.

She ran, and this time she refused to look back. She refused to look at Raya’s frozen figure. She refused to look at Raya’s panicked friends. She refused to look at the gem they all fought for. Finally, she refused to let anyone see her cry.

Her legs carried her towards the only person who could give her a sense of semblance now, her mother. The Chief of Fang might have made many mistakes in the past, but she had always been a rock and sense of security for Namaari. She might be a strict mother but had always wanted the best for her daughter and Fang.

Namaari looked at her mother, who was no longer stone, and surprised them both. She was unable to keep her formal stature and hugged her mother. It had been years since Namaari had given her mother a bone-crushing hug with tears running down her face. Chief Virana seemed taken aback by Namaari’s breakdown.

The chief was aware of the years of guilt and pain her daughter carried. She doubts seeing citizens of Fang and herself being turned to stone by Druuns helped. She wiped the tears off of her daughter’s face and hugged her back.

“Raya…she didn’t come back with the rest of us, she was still stone,” Namaari whispered sobbing.

Chief Virana looked down at her daughter seeing the hurt in Namaari’s eyes. She knew that Namaari had gotten emotional and attached to Raya six years ago at Heart. She knew the relief Namaari felt when she found out Raya wasn’t stone. She knew the ambition and thrill Namaari felt when she would go after Raya. She knew the hesitance in Namaari’s eyes when she told Namaari that Raya would have no choice to hand over Sisu and the gem pieces. She knew her daughter had some feelings for Raya.

“Oh, my Morning Mist” Virana whispered back.

How would the other lands forgive Fang, and more importantly would Namaari forgive her?

Chief Virana and Namaari looked up to see dragons, thousands of them flying over Fang including the Mighty Sisudatu. Namaari’s teary eyes widened, Sisu was alive. They watched as Sisu landed in front of them clearly looking for something… or someone. Chief Virana and Namaari quickly showed their respect by putting their hands together in a circle.

“Where’s my girl, Raya?” Sisu asked in her usually chirpy tone.

Namaari’s teary face and Cheif Virana’s silence crushed Sisu’s mood as she looked nervously around for her friends, finally spotting Boun, Tong, Little Noi, and the Ongis at the bottom of the palace stairs.

“What happened and where’s Raya?” Sisu asked flying over to them.

She watched as their mournful faces lit up a bit and Noi jumped on her face with tears coming down her face.

“Sisu you’re okay!?!” Boun yelled as he went to give Sisu a hug as well.

Tong and the Ongis also walked over and hugged Sisu in a group hug.

“Yeah, I’m fine! All the dragons and humans are back.” Sisu said hopefully giving a tight smile.

Sisu watched as the group looked at each other and then at her. There was definitely something they weren’t telling her, and it definitely was not a good thing.

“Raya… she’s still a statue, she didn’t come back with the rest of us,” Tong said quietly looking down remorsefully.

Chapter Text

Hours. Days. Months. Years.

It had been years since that day, since Kumandra was united, since the gem was back together, since Raya had been gone. Namaari wished she remembered more from that day, but her mind decided otherwise.

Fang had completely been rebuilt at this point, building around the only statue in Kumandra.

Namaari goes to visit the statue of the once energetic, but angry girl she used to know, almost every day. In the beginning, the guilt was overbearing to the point she couldn’t even look at Raya, but as time went on it had become a safe space for Namaari. She could go to Raya’s statue, express her feelings, and always be reminded to never give up like Raya hadn’t. She had promised to Raya, Chief Benja, and herself to protect Kumandra and keep the peace between the tribes, she wouldn’t let Raya’s hard work go to waste.

“I wish you were here to see everything. I know how hard you worked to see your Ba, and now that he’s back you’re gone…” Namaari said breathing heavily in front of Raya’s statue.

There were different kinds of flowers and trinkets around Raya from different people and tribes to express their gratitude. Only if she could see them all. She looked back up from the gifts and walked closer to Raya putting her hand on her cold stone cheek. It felt wrong, she didn’t think she deserved it after all the pain she had caused Raya, but a longing in her persisted otherwise.

“I wonder how hard it must have been for you, losing your Ba and then having to learn how to survive without anything or anyone, but Tuk Tuk. I know I’ve said this before and it won’t make up for anything, but I am so truly sorry, Raya.” Namaari said finally dropping her arm to her side.

She looked at Raya with great regret and pain, but also love and admiration as a tear ran down her face. Namaari used to be great at hiding her emotions and staying strong, but ever since the day Raya turned to stone, Namaari had allowed herself to enjoy her emotions. Much to her mother’s dismay, she allows herself to be freer with her emotions in the past few years, it makes her human.

Namaari turned around and walked back to her room in the palace with a sad smile on her face after letting Raya know she would be back tomorrow. This had been her routine for the last seven years, and perhaps it would be for the rest of her life.

__________

The Cheif of Fang came to visit one of the saviors of Kumandra on a weekly basis, it was the least she could do. She knew how hard it had been on Namaari, Chief Benja, and Heart to lose Raya and she felt partially responsible. If she hadn’t planned to steal the gem that day thirteen years ago, Raya would probably be alive. That day had been the cause of so many families getting separated and the Druun unleashing wreaking havoc on all of the tribes. Her judgment for the better of her people had resulted in her tribe being in worse situations than better.

How could she have let children go without parents? How could she have let people suffer for her own tribe’s gain? How could she have allowed all those people to be torn apart and turned to stone?

She looked at Raya’s cupped hands and lightly placed a Fang traditional flower on them. She can’t imagine the pain twelve-year-old Raya went through when she lost her father, or the pain Cheif Benja felt when he realized he lost his daughter. Chief Virana had been afraid of what would happen when everyone came back and the blame everyone would put on Fang, especially Heart. She had been completely wrong about the punishments that would be bestowed on Fang, her daughter, and herself. Chief Benja and the rest of the tribes had forgiven her, offering peace and the hope of Kumandra. Years later she still cannot understand how Cheif Benja had forgiven her for keeping him away from his daughter, and now not being able to see her alive. If it had been her, she would have never excepted peace if anything had happened to her daughter.

The Chief had simply told her that his daughter worked for a better future and he would never give up on his dream of Kumandra, and like that Cheif Virana had signed all treaties for Kumandra.

She slowly hugged the stone girl in front of her, thanking her as always and then returning back to her duties.

__________

Chief Benja. It had been the hardest out of everyone for him to adjust to his new life. He had missed six years of his daughter’s life, and now she was completely gone. He learned about his daughter through other people and a dragon, but his heart aches for him to talk to her and her to talk back to him. He wanted to comfort his daughter, he wanted her to know he was back, he wanted to hear about her adventures without him, he wanted to know about her struggles without him. Chief Benja went from having a twelve-year-old daughter to having an eighteen-year-old daughter who would possibly never come back to him. He imagines her coming home to Heart with him one day, but his hope had been diminishing as the years went by.

He remembers the day he had come back from being stone, the pain from the arrow from years ago in his leg, but the relief of being able to breathe and see his daughter again was much greater. He didn’t realize how long it had been. He had watched as all the tribes came to Heart, like all those years ago, but with sad smiles on their faces. The Great Sisudatu leading them as she stopped in front of the Cheif and told him what had happened back at Fang. His heart stopped when Sisudatu told him that Raya was still stone unlike everyone else, and according to her brother Pengudatu, she would most likely never come back. The way the dragons hadn’t come back the first time they had given Sisudatu the gem, Raya wouldn’t come back either. The person or dragon who puts their trust into someone else will remain to be stone.

He walked over to his daughter and sat down in front of her. He had just finished a council meeting with the Cheifs of Kumandra. Whenever it was possible he would come to visit his daughter and try to imagine her moving around, acting the way she was described by Sisudatu, Namaari, and Raya’s other friends.

“Hey Dewdrop…” he started as Tuk Tuk rolled towards him and Raya.

Chief Benja lightly hugged Tuk Tuk, as Tuk Tuk lightly nudged Raya to see if she was back. She wasn’t and she probably wouldn’t ever be. The both of them spent the next couple of hours with the Last Guardian of the Dragon Gem.
