Chapter 1: An Unlikely Savior
Chapter Text
The streets of Paris were filled with people bustling about as the blond lady in the purple dress and shawl made her way through the crowd. It was her first time in Paris and she was enjoying it immensely. Suddenly she heard a commotion coming from nearby and turned to see two soldiers harassing a man dressed in purple and gold clothes that resembled a jesters outfit. She vaguely recognized him from earlier that morning when he had bought some bread from the bakery as she was passing it.
"You stole that piece of bread!" Said one of the guards punching the man in the stomach.
"A bit early in the morning to start your bullying don't you think? Do you nitwits even have proof I stole it? " replied the jester fellow cheekily despite having doubled over from the blow.
"You're a gypsy what other proof is necessary?" sneered the second guard. These words made the blond woman's blood boil. Thinking quickly, she took on a distraught look and hurried up to the guards in tears.
"oh please sirs! Help me! A little blond boy just stole my coin purse! Clearly seeing her as a damsel in distress the guards turned their attention from the gypsy. Out of the corner of her eye she saw the gypsy disappear.
"Which way did he go ma'am?" asked the first guard.
"Down that street to the left! He was heading for the other have of town," sobbed the woman.
"We're on it ma'am", replied the first guard who had a large mustache.
"What about the gypsy vermin? He's disappeared!" snapped the second guard.
"He's probably is halfway across the city right now. We'll look as we go." said the first guard. The two hurried off and the woman dropped her disraught facade.
"That was quite the performance Mademoiselle," said a voice behind her. She turned to see the gypsy from earlier leaning up against a building at the entrance to the nearest alley.
"Shouldn't you have run off by now? I doubt I can fake another stolen purse." The gypsy chuckled.
"You heard them. That's EXACTLY what they think I would do. The last place they'll search is the one they just left. Now may I get the name of my savior?"
"Madeleine Clement," said the woman with a curtsy. "And you are Monsieur?"
"Clopin Trouillefou at your service," the gypsy replied taking off his feathered purple hat and giving a sweeping bow. Madeleine smiled she liked him already.
"So, Mademoiselle Clement, I take it you're new to Paris?" Madeleine raised her eyebrows.
"Yes. How did you know?" Clopin shrugged.
"Not many people who live in Paris would bother helping to save a gypsy." Madeleine blinked in surprise.
"Surely the people here don't just stand around while those who are innocent get mistreated?"
Clopin snorted.
"Did you see anyone else coming to my rescue? What you heard the guards say is the general public opinion about my people. I'm afraid your kind heart is in for a rude awakening." He gave her a slightly sad smile.
"I must be on my way now." He said, replacing the hat on his head.
"Wait! Will I see you again?" asked Madeleine. She wasn't sure why but she didn't want this to be her only encounter with Clopin. For his part Clopin looked surprised, his dark eyes searching her aquamarine ones.
"Why would you want to?" a mischievous smile came across Madeleine's face.
"I'll tell you when I see you again." Clopin grinned.
"Well, played Mademoiselle Clement. You can find me at the puppet caravan by Notre Dame tomorrow morning." Madeleine's smile brightened.
"I look forward to it."
"As do I," Clopin replied and with a final bow he disappeared down the street.
As Madeleine turned to head towards the bookstore she couldn't help but feel her heart flutter at the thought of seeing Clopin again she continued down the steet with a skip in her step.
Author's note: So this is the start of my first Hunchback of Notre Dame fanfiction because we don't get enough Clopin romance fic. PLEASE comment below with how you like it and want me to keep going. It's much easier to keep writing a story when you know there are people interested in it. Also I KNOW Quasi's love interest in the sequel is Madelleine but a) different (PROPER) spelling and b) It's a great french name so no matter. Clement means gentil and merciful.
Chapter 2: An Unsual Woman
Chapter Text
As Clopin performed his puppet show for the children in front of Notre Dame he couldn't help but think of the woman he met the previous day. The woman for no other reason than kindness had stepped in to save him. A stranger and a gypsy at that.
Her actions saving him were unusual enough but Clopin had found himself momentarily speechless after she asked to see him again. Most outsiders, or gadjo's, as the gypsy's refered to them, wouldn't dream of wanting to see a gypsy again. Especially given the danger associating with the caused. Even the less prejudiced members of Paris avoided them for fear of getting caught up in the persecution.
Clopin found himself hoping that she would show up. He must have lost his place as he was thinking because one of the children spoke up saying,
"Clopin! You already said that bit!" Clopin quickly recovered pulling out the little puppet of himself.
"That is because my little friend here was distracting me. Weren't you?" He asked the puppet.
"No I wasn't grosse nez! That was you!" squeeked the puppet.
"Oh really? Then why did I get distracted hmm? Now hush so I can finish the story." He said taking a stick and hitting the puppet on the head with it. The puppet let out a small,
"Dang" causing the children to errupt into giggles. As he put the puppet away and began to continue the story, among the childish giggles, was a light laugh much like the chimming of bells. He looked up to see that the very person who had distracted him was now in the audience.
Madeleine Clement with a red cloak around her shoulders had knelt down on the pavement next to the children watching the performance with a small smile. A smile that broadened slightly when he caught her eye.
Clopin finished his performance and collected the few coins the children's parents had deigned to allow them to give him. Once the children scattered he turned to see the young blond she couldn't be more than 21.
"Mademoiselle Clement! A pleasure to see you," he said kissing the back of her hand.
"The same to you Monsieur Trouillefou," Mademoiselle Clement replied with a smile.
"Please Mademoiselle call me Clopin. Monsieur Trouillefou is far too formal and old." This made the woman laugh again. Oh how beautiful a laugh it was.
"Very well."
"So, what brings you to our fair city?" asked Clopin as they leaned against the puppet caravan.
"I suppose I was getting restless in Lorraine, my village, so my parents allowed me to travel up here to stay with my brother Henri."
Henri Clement. The name rang a bell in Clopin's mind and he realized Henri was the tinker that lived near the outskirts of Paris. He had shown kindness to the gypsies giving them money occasionally and even helping a few of them avoid the guards. Clopin had never spoken to him but it was no wonder Madeleine should be related to Henri. He smiled.
"I see, and what do you think of Paris so far?"
"I love the excitment and the beauty" she bit her lip slightly, "But I'm not as fond of the prejudice. I've never seen it so prevalent. You weren't exaggerating yesterday."
"I never exaggerate about the plight of my people," said Clopin seriously. The blond nodded.
"I suppose I just hoped it wasn't true. Prejudice wasn't absent in Lorraine but it was nowhere near as vehement. Just now the Baker warmed me to avoid you." Clopin raised a dark eyebrow at her.
"And you didn't listen."
"No I..." The clopping of heave hooves cut off the young lady's words. Clopin immediately was on alert. He knew that sound. Quickly he grabbed her hand a pulled her around behind the caravan. She appeared startled but remained quiet.
Seconds later Judge Claude Frollo passed by on his giant black horse. Ominous as ever, his cold eyes scanning the street for gypsies. They remained quiet until Frollo had long passed. Clopin then looked down to realize he had pulled Mademoiselle Clement into his arms protectively.
She seemed to have come to a similar conclusion judging by the look in her aquamarine eyes. Shockingly there was no fear coupled with her surpise although a pretty red blush had come to her face. Nonetheless they both swiftly detached themselves.
"My apologies Mademoiselle Clement." Clopin said quickly. The woman shook her head.
"It's fine really. Who was that?"
"Judge Claude Frollo, Minister of Justice," Clopin added a sarcastic edge to the word "justice". "He's the man responsible for a most of the widespread hatred towards my people. A dark look crossed Mademoiselle Clement's face.
"I see. He certainly looks the part. He's quite intimidating for someone so old." she paused. "I'm not entirely sure I want to hang around town at the moment while he's so nearby."
"Why? I mean I wouldn't want to be near the wizened old basard either but why would you care?" asked Clopin. Mademoiselle Clement smiled slightly.
"Because I promised my brother I'd stay out of trouble for now, and I have a feeling if I witnessed that man's actions I wouldn't be able to stop myself from interfering." Her words touched Clopin slightly. She truly cared about those beyond her own kind.
"I see. I take it you'll be heading home then?" the young blond nodded.
"Yes."
"While you may not be in danger on your own it wouldn't be wise to run the risk of catching Frollo's attention for associating with gypsies by being seen leaving here." Clopin said stroking his goatee as an idea formed.
"I'm afraid I don't know any route home other than the main one," replied Mademoiselle Clement with a perplexed look that Clopin found rather adorable.
"Ah! But that's where you are in luck! I know every street in Paris like the back of my hand. I can easily get you home without being seen if you will permit me to escort you." Joy filled Mademoiselle Clement's face and she grinned.
"I would be delighted," she told him. Clopin bowed and offered her his hand which she took. The pair easily wended their way through the back and sidestreets of Paris chatting as they went.
"It's a whole different view of the city," his companion commented. "Did you grow up here?" Clopin nodded.
"Yes, I've spent most of my life learning these streets so as to avoid Frollo and his guards. It always helps to have an escape route.
"Something tells me trouble finds you rather easily." Mademoiselle Clement said slyly. Clopin smirked.
"You could say that about most gypsies." They paused by a ditch. They were close to their destination. Clopin eaily lept across and held out his hand to help the blond who surprisingly lept across just as nimbly.
Soon the Clement's house came into view it was a small two story building with a front garden. As they strode towards it Henri Clement, a tall man in his thirties with blond hair came out. Clopin noticed the man was limping and used a walking stick.
"Madeleine! You're home early, did something happen?" the young woman let go of Clopin's hand and ran to hug her brother.
"Frollo showed up." she said. A dark look crossed Henri's face.
"Frollo?" he groaned and put a hand to his face. "Merdi Madeleine! Please tell me you didn't pick a fight with the Minister of Justice? He's an evil bastard but I would rather you DIDN'T tangle with him in your first week here."
"She didn't get a chance although I'm sure she would have been quite a match for our dear Minister," cut in Clopin. Henri chuckled.
"I suppose so. Henri Clement." He held out his hand for Clopin to shake. Slightly startled by the amicable behavior despite knowing Henri's more sympathetic tendencies Clopin shook it.
"Clopin Trouillefou."
"Yes, I recognize you from the puppet shows. Thank you for bringing Madeleine home."
"It was my pleasure. And thank you for the kindness you've shown my people," replied Clopin. Henri gave him a small, understanding smile.
"I do what I can. If you or your people need anything let me know. I mean it. Not all of us Parisians are willing to bow down to Frollo's tyranny." His tone was earnest and Clopin mentally filed the offer away for later.
"I'll keep that in mind," he said.
"I'll let you two say your goodbye's," said Henri as he limped back to the house. Clopin turned to look at the young woman.
"Mademoiselle Clement..." he began but was cut off.
"Please, after today I think you've earned the right to call me Madeleine."
"Very well, Madeleine. You know you never fulfilled your promise." the adorable look of confusion from before returned to Madeleine's face.
"What do you mean?"
"You never told me why you wanted to see me again," explained Clopin. Madeleine's eyes widened.
"Oh! Well, I'm not sure I have a satisfactory answer. It's just a feeling that I had. A feeling that I wanted to get to know you better. I'm afraid I can't properly explain it." Clopin smiled at her.
"Well, I'm glad you did and I look forward to our next encounter." He took her hand and kissed the back of it.
"As do I," she replied slightly shyly. Clopin gave a final wave before beginning to make his way back to the main city. His heart felt light and he was truly looking forward to getting to see this unusual woman again.

Chapter 3: The Court of Miracles
Chapter Text
Clopin made his way through the catacombs of Paris to the Court of Miracles. The one safe haven for the gypsies. At least for now. As he walked he thought about Madeleine. No woman had ever captured his interest the way she did. It was more than just her beauty, which was considerable. It was also her heart.
The passage opened up and Clopin entered the main area of the Court. It was practically it's own city. Colorful tents and caravans were set up all around and gypsies milled about in front or inside of them. A great open space they used for gatherings was set at the end of the main walkway and by the back wall was the gallows where intruders were hung. The walls and ceiling had fabric in a variety of shades hanging from them in an attempt to lighten up the underground sanctuary. It was a bit odd perhaps but it was home.
Clopin made his way to a large yellow tent. Inside he saw his father Harodain Trouillefou, King of the gypsies was standing around a table with some of his confidents. Harodain looked like your typical Romani with tanned skin and dark hair, he was incredibly tall and wore a brown widebrimmed hat with a feather, a green tunic, and brown pants. His nose was slightly crooked after having been broken in a fight with a guard. He looked up as Clopin came in.
"Hello Clopin, were have you been?"
"Out performing," said Clopin not sure if he should mention Madeleine unless he had to. His father was understandably very distrusting of most gadjo's.
"Good," said his father with a smile. His father had encouraged Clopin's love of storytelling wanting him to find his own specific craft. It also brought in money to help maintain their people so that was a plus.
"Harodain, we need to find another safehouse now that the Jean-Claude the butcher is leaving. We don't know if we can trust the new people moving in," said Orferus who was practically Harodain's second in command.
"What about Henri Clement the tinker?" suggested Clopin coming over to stand with them.
"Why do you think Clement would help us?" asked Harodain. Clopin coughed. It looked like his meeting with Madeleine wasn't going to be so secret after all.
"Well, he told me today when I walked his sister home that if we gypsies needed any help he'd be happy to provide it. He's always been kind to our people." Clopin added hoping the bit about Madeleine would get overlooked. No such luck.
"I wasn't aware Clement had a sister. Regardless, what were you doing walking her home?" Harodain's tone was sharp. Clopin sighed.
"Look yesterday I had a run in with some guards who accused me of stealing. I actually didn't this time," he said quickly. "Anyway, Madeleine Clement who just moved here stepped in and helped distract the guards so I could escape. Then I saw her at the puppet show this morning. We got to talking just as Frollo passed and I walked her home by a backway so she didn't get connected with us."
Harodain sighed.
"I thought I've warned you about getting close with gadjo's it's dangerous for the Court."
"Oh please. I just walked her home. She's different than a majority of the gadjo's. She helped me for absolutely no reason. And it's not like I told her where the Court was." scoffed Clopin.
"Nonetheless, you should be more careful." his father told him. Clopin gave a huff.
"Look, Madeleine's just a friend. The point is her brother offered to help us and if you need a new safehouse why not consider him?"
His father looked thoughtful.
"I'll consider it but I don't want you taking any unnecessary risks just because you let your emotions get in the way of your judgment." Clopin rolled his eyes as he walked out.
"I'm 27 I think my judgment is fairly good."
Clopin felt annoyed as he walked back to his tent. Did he like Madeleine? Yes. Quite a lot actually. She was lovely in both looks and soul. But that didn't mean he was going to get careless and put his people at risk! He wished his father would show more confidence in his judgment. After all he was going to be the leader of their people one day.
"Clopin! Clopin!" cried a familiar voice. Looking over he saw the black hair and emerald eyes of his 18 year-old cousin Esmerelda. Who was honestly more like a sister.
"Hello Esme. What is it?," he said with a smile.
"I was hoping you could come watch my latest dance routine. I want your opinion." she said. Esmerelda was an excellent dancer. One of the best in the Court.
"Alright, just let me go drop something off in my tent." Esmerelda's face turned from one of excitement to one of concern.
"Are you alright?" she asked. Clopin shrugged.
"Just an argument with my father. That's nothing new."
"Don't worry. I'm sure it will blow over. I'll see you near the center then?"
Clopin grinned.
"Absolutely!" with that Esmerelda ran off.
As he entered his tent Clopin's mind wandered back to Madeleine. Her bell-like laugh, her golden hair, the adorable look she got on her face whenever she felt perplexed. He didn't know where the aquaintence would go but he was looking forward to finding out.
Author's note: So here's chapter three I know it's a bit short but I wanted to establish the Court and some of it's people. The names are just Romani ones that I looked up on google. Please like and COMMENT. I really want to know people's thoughts!
Chapter 4: Propositions and Witchcraft
Chapter Text
Madeleine spent the rest of the week after her second encounter with Clopin assisting her brother. While largely capable it was clear that his leg, which had been injured in the war limited how much he could get done on his own.
Madeleine felt only too happy to help. Despite being 15 years her senior Henri and Madeleine where quite close. She had been heartbroken when he left first for the war and then for Paris. Now she relished their time together.
She found herself thinking about Clopin quite a lot during that time. They had met twice yet she felt a strange connection in a way that she had never experienced before. It was because of this that she found herself looking towards the puppet caravan as she and Henri made their way out of Notre Dame after mass on Sunday.
"Looking for someone?" asked Henri slyly. Caught in the act Madeleine blushed.
"Whatever do you mean?"
"Well, if I'm not much mistaken I would guess you’re looking for a glimpse of Clopin, given how longingly you are looking at his caravan. " Henri's tone was teasing Madeleine felt herself blush a deeper shade of red.
"Well, I... He's an interesting man and yes, I would like to see him again. There's nothing more to it." Madeleine said defensively. Henri chuckled at his sister''s reaction and opened his mouth to reply. However his words were cut off by yelling.
Two gypsy children ran by followed by two large guards. Madeleine saw Henri put his walking stick out to trip up the first soldier who fell quickly followed by his companion. Henri then pretended to fall to the ground. Catching on Madeleine bent down with a cry of worry.
"Oh you foolish men! You just knocked over my poor brother on his bad leg!" Turning back to the guards she scowled.
"Well? Will you help me or not? One would think you'd show more respect for a war hero!"
Clearly not wanting to look bad after causing a lame Parisian man, and a war hero at that, to fall the guards grudgingly helped Henri stand. As Madeleine guessed Henri had planned the gypsy children were long gone.
"Our apologies sir. It was those gypsy brats..." began the first guard.
"Simply watch where you are going gentlemen. It's not difficult. At least for competent people." Interrupted Henri before leaning on Madeleine's arm and walking away leaving the guards looking miffed.
After walking a ways they passed an alley where out the corner of her eye Madeleine saw Clopin lecturing the two children.
"You could have been caught if it weren't for the Clement's quick thinking. Next time the bystanders may not be so kind! You may be children but that doesn't mean they'll show mercy." His tone was sharp and the two children looked properly ashamed.
"We're sorry Clopin. We won't do it again." Clopin's face softened.
"Good. Then head back to the Court." The two children started to run away before Clopin added. "And stay out of the way of the guards!" He then turned around, coming face to face with the Clement's who had stepped into the alley.
"Are they alright?" asked Madeleine concern filling her. Clopin nodded.
"Yes. Probably a bit frightened more than anything else."
"We're glad we could help," said Henri. "Really chasing after children. It's ridiculous." Madeleine stepped forward smiling at Clopin. Despite the situation she was glad to have found him.
"It's good to see you again," she said. Clopin return her smile. Today he was dressed in a purple tunic and purple hat. Although he maintained his black gloves.
"The sentiment is returned Madamoiselle," she raised an eyebrow at him and with a little grin he corrected, "Madeleine." Behind Clopin some cleared their throat. Out of the shadows stepped a man who resembled Clopin immensely. Or perhaps it was the other way around.
"Yes, we appreciate your assistance," said the man.
"As I said, it was our pleasure," replied Henri shaking the man's hand.
"Harodain Trouillefou," said the man. "I'd like to talk to you Monsieur Clement. I have proposition." Madeleine raised her eyebrows curious what the proposition might be.
"Certainly," replied Henri. He turned to Madeleine. "Perhaps Monsieur Clopin, I could request you look after Madeleine?" Madeleine huffed.
"I don't need looking after, I'm not a child!" Despite her indignation she was pleased at the prospect of spending more time with Clopin.
"It would be my pleasure," said Clopin with a bow. He then offered his arm to Madeleine. Gladly she took it and the pair began to walk off.
HoND
Harodain watched Henri Clement in surprise. It seemed Clopin had been right in saying the Clements were different. The incident with the children only served to affirm his decision. He raised a dark eyebrow at Henri who chuckled.
"Come now. I can't be the only who noticed that. You can practically see the sparks flying."
"You would encourage a relationship between your sister and a gypsy?" as Harodain. Henri shrugged.
"Clopin seems like a decent enough fellow. I've seen him around before and he had ample opportunity to take advantage of Madeleine when they walked home last week. As long as he treats her well I see little reason to stop what appears to be inevitable. Even if they don't realize it themselves."
"Do you think she understands the consequences of what a relationship with my son would mean? Especially give the current climate. Sacrifices may be necessary on her part. I admit despite having had plenty of women I've never seen Clopin look at a woman like that before. I doubt this would be a mere fling."
Henri looked thoughtful as he watched the two walk away.
"Perhaps not yet. But she will. And if things progress as we suspect she will learn soon enough. There is more to Madeleine than meets the eye. She's strong willed. She won't make the decision lightly. I doubt your son would either." He turned to look at Harodain.
"But I doubt you came here simply to discuss those two." Harodain shook his head.
"I didn't. Clopin said you offered to help us in any way you could."
"That's correct," replied Henri with a nod.
"Then I will give my proposition."
HofND
Clopin and Madeleine walked arm and arm through the backstreets of Paris. Still trying to avoid the attention of any guards. Finally they reached a little bridge with a stream running beneath it. They leaned on the bridge and Madeleine looked over at Clopin.
"Do you know what they're talking about?" she asked. Clopin nodded.
"My father wishes to use your brother's house as a safehouse for us gypsies." Madeleine nodded. If they could provide a safehouse to help the gypsies then so much the better.
"Why is your father the one arranging it?" she asked. Clopin paused for a moment considering her.
"My father is the King of the gypsies," he explained at last. Madeleine's eyebrows rose in surprise. She had never thought of the gypsies having a "king" but it was understandable that they would have some sort of leader. She smiled and curtsied.
"I had no idea I was addressing royalty, your highness," she said teasingly. Clopin chuckled.
"It's not that big a deal. Other than being responsible for the welfare of our people we don't differentiate much from the rest of the court. Not the way you gadjo's do."
"Gadjo's?" asked Madeleine in confusion. Clopin appeared amused by her question.
"It's Romani for outsider. I don't mean it as an insult to you." Madeleine blinked before shrugging.
"Fair enough. I imagine you'll be a wonderful leader considering how protective you were of those two children," she smiled at him kindly. Clopin bit his lip as he stared out over the water, suddenly looking slightly insecure.
"I'm not so sure. I want to look after my people but I see all the things my father does and I'm not sure I'd be able to live up to the responsibility." Madeleine placed her hand over his gloved one. She used her other hand to gently turn his face towards her.
"The mere fact that you question your ability simply proves your worth. Those who are best suited to power are those who do not long for it." Clopin looked at her searchingly with his dark brown eyes. So dark they were nearly black.
"Why do you do it?" he asked taking her hands in his. Madeleine furrowed her brow.
"What do you mean?"
"Why are you so kind to us gypsies? The majority of your kind despise us yet you show only compassion for us even going as far as being willing to risk your life to help us."
"Because it's the right thing to do. You've done nothing to deserve the treatment you get. So you look different from us and live a different lifestyle. It doesn't mean I should treat you with cruelty. People should be judged by their individual deeds and who they are as a person. Just because most of Paris seems to have forgotten that doesn't mean I will." Madeleine said earnestly. She was very aware of how close they were now as one of his hands strayed to caress her cheek.
"Frollo accuses us of witchcraft. But I wonder, given the spell you seem to have put on me if that claim would be more accurately applied to you." he said softly. Their faces were now inches apart.
"Maybe you’re not the only one under a spell," she murmured.
"Hmm," hummed Clopin before leaning in and kissing her and without a moment of hesitation she kissed him back.

Chapter 5: Love and Warnings
Chapter Text
Madeleine had never been kissed by a man before but it felt absolutely blissful and electric. She tentatively wrapped her arms about his neck and kissed him back fervently.
After what felt like an age they pulled apart their foreheads leaning against each other. For a moment Clopin appeared slightly worried but as she smiled at him the worry dissipated and was replaced with happiness. Clopin chuckled.
"So much for careful," he said.
"What do you mean?" asked Madeleine pulling away slightly so she could look up at him, although his hands remained on her waist and hers around his neck. Clopin smiled ruefully.
"My father said I should be careful around you. Not to let my feelings get in the way of my mind." Madeleine giggled.
"Yes, I think we've well and truly crossed that particular line." The two shared a laugh before Clopin's face became serious. He ran a hand through her hair.
"He has a point though, this is dangerous." Madeleine placed a hand on his cheek. Looking up into his warm, dark eyes.
"I know. I'm not yet certain where this will go and I don't think you are either. But something in me tells me that this is worth it." The hand that was still on her waist pulled her closer. He leaned down and whispered in her ear,
"Good, because I feel the same," before pulling back and kissing her again. This kiss was shorter but no less enjoyable. When they pulled apart again they shifted so they were standing next to each other. He wrapped his right arm close about her waist as she leaned against him, her right hand coming to cover his left which was on the rail of the bridge. Together they stared out over the rushing stream.
"So what's your plan for the rest of the day?" asked Madeleine. Clopin hummed lightly.
"The market should be filling up this afternoon so I'll put a performance on then," he replied.
"Take adavantage of all the relieved parents who are just glad to have their children off their hands for a while so they can shop in peace?" asked Madeleine cheekily as she looked up at him.
"Precisely mon coeur," he replied. Madeleine basked in the glow of his adoring gaze blushing slightly at the term of endearment. This only appeared to amuse Clopin further.
"And what do you plan to do on this lovely day?" he asked. Madeleine looked apologetic
"Unfortunately, I have some sewing to finish up although I think you're show would likely be a far more enjoyable use of my time. I swear I'll come to the next one."Clopin smiled.
"That sounds wonderful. I'll be quite happy to have you there to witness my hard work. Suddenly he whipped out the mini-puppet of himself.
"Your hard work?! I'm the one that does all the heavy lifting," it squeeked. Clopin's face took on a look of mock offense.
"I'm fairly certain I'm the one telling the stories!"
"Well I'm the one everyone comes to see! It sure is you big nose!" Madeleine giggled at Clopin's antics.
"Hush now or I'll use the stick. It's rude to argue in front of the lady," Clopin told the puppet.
"Now, now, you two. You're both very entertaining, so there's no need to argue she said in a mock scolding tone. The puppet hung it's head.
"Okay."
"Save all that energy for the children," she said bopping the puppet's nose lightly. Clopin put the puppet away. He really should get some manners." Madeleine arched a blond eyebrow.
"Who does he learn them from?" Clopin chuckled.
"A fair point ma cherie." He offered her his arm and she took it.
"I'm afraid I don't have time to walk you all the way home but I'll escort you as far as the Cathedral." Madeleine was slightly disappointed but understood Clopin needed to take advatage of what opportunities he had to make money to help his people. No it was the fact that they had to hide that truly saddened her.
"Hopefully the day will come when we won't have to fear being seen together." Clopin smiled sadly.
"That truly would be wonderful. But for now I'm afraid caution is our friend." Madeleine nodded. and they made their way towards the two great towers of Notre Dame. Once they reached a nearby alley they stopped.
"I'll see you soon ma couer," he said giving her a quick peck on the lips.
"See you soon," she replied with a small smile as he bounded away. Madeleine stepped out of the alley and made her way home. The memory of their first kiss was still fresh in her mind and as she walked home the smile never left her face.
HoND
When Madeleine arrived home she found Henri waiting for her in the kitchen with a knowing grin on his face.
"What?" she asked as she set aside her shawl and sat down at the table.
"Oh nothing really. Just that you look positively smitten my dear sister." Madeleine gasped.
"Henri!" His smirk merely widened.
"Go on then. Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me you didn't come from just kissing Clopin." Madeleine was speechless. She felt her cheeks go red and she buried her face in her arms with a groan so she didn't have to look at her brother's smug face.
"You're never going to stop teasing me about this are you?" she said her voice muffled by her arms.
"Nope."
With a sigh Madeleine raised her head to look at Henri. His smile softened and he put his hand over hers.
"I'm happy for you Madeleine."
"How did you know?" she asked. Henri chuckled.
"You're my little sister. I know you better than anyone. I knew this was coming the first time I saw you two together. I could see a connection between the two of you simply from the way that you looked at each other. The way you both light up when you're together. I don't think I've ever seen you this happy." Madeleine squeezed his hand.
"Thank you Henri," she said softly. He nodded but however, his tone became more serious as the mirth left his eyes.
"With that said, you have to be careful. Not because he's a gypsy, but because of the way people like him are treated. Don't let your happiness make you lax. There could be serious concequences for both of you if someone like Frollo found out. I want you to be happy but I also don't want to see you with a rope around your neck." Madeleine nodded.
"I promise, I will. I don't want him to get hurt any more than I would wish it on myself." Henri smiled and his tone became more jovial again.
"Good. Come here," He opened his arms and Madeleine hugged her brother feeling an overwelming rush of love and warmth for him. He was always there when she needed him most and she knew if he had his way, he always would be.
HoND
Clopin finished his performance and collected the money had earned from it. Smiling kindly at the children. Much as he distrusted most gadjo's the children were quite sweet. He had always been fond of children.
Once he cleaned up from the show he walked back to the Court of Miracles a spring in his step as thoughts of Madeleine filled his head. She liked him back. It was almost too wonderful to be true.
When he reached his tent he found his father waiting for him. Clopin's heart which had be feather light since kissing Madeleine sunk.
"Look if you're just going to lecture me about Madeleine I don't want to hear it and..."
"I'm not," said his father, interuppting Clopin's defensive speech. Clopin furrowed his brow.
"You're not? I thought you didn't want me around her. Not that I'm complaining." Harodain hummed lightly and gestured for Clopin to take a seat.
"I've come to realize that much as I worry about you you do take after me. Which is to say that if I told you to stay away from her you'd go and do it anyway." He chuckled.
"No, Madeleine Clement seems like a fairly nice woman. I'm not sure how sensible she is getting involved with you of all people," he grinned teasingly. "But I'm going to trust to your judgement." Clopin smiled.
"Thank you father." Harodain nodded.
"Someday it will be your job to look after the Court. It's time I trusted you more," Clopin felt a rush of pride at his father's words. His father stood.
"Just be careful. As long as you're with that girl you have a responsibility to look after her, for both your sakes. I don't think I need to spell out the consequences if something goes wrong." Clopin stood.
"I understand father. I won't let anything happen to Madeleine. Harodain gave him a small smile.
"That's my son." His father then turned and left the tent. Clopin stared after him. He was glad to hear his father planned to trust his judgement more. But at the same time he hoped his turn to run the Court would not come for a VERY long time.
Author's Note: Looks like Henri and Harodain are thinking along the same lines. Considering this fic is working within Disney logic I'm not going to worry TOO much about linguistic anachronisms. Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has commented so far! I can't express how much it means to me so to all of you please take a moment to give me your thoughts on the story. I hope to update weekly so keep checking back for chapters. Also ma coeur mean "my heart" in French.
Chapter 6: Stories and Plans
Chapter Text
Madeleine hurried through the streets of Paris. She was running late and did not want to miss the start of Clopin's puppet show. She had made a promise after all.
She rounded a corner and saw she had made it just in time. Sitting down on the edge of a nearby fountain she began to listen to the tale. It told the story of a young woman who sacrificed her freedom to save her father and ended up falling for a beast who was actually a prince under a curse.
Clopin really was a fabulous storyteller. He could make the characters truly come to life and enthrall his audience. She could also tell he loved what he was doing and his passion only made the show more enjoyable.
Madeleine did raise an eyebrow when she saw the puppet of the heroine had blond hair and aquamarine eyes. Briefly catching her gaze Clopin winked causing her to blush.
"And the Prince asked Belle for her hand in marriage. For not only was she the most beautiful woman in France but also the kindest. She had seen beyond the beast when no other could. Belle accepted and the pair lived happily ever after." Clopin concluded the story with a flourish.
There was a smattering of applause and once the crowd had dispersed Madeleine walked up, a smile on her face.
"Kindest and most beautiful woman in all of France?" she asked. Clopin grinned.
"I speak only the truth Mademoiselle." Madeleine laughed and inclined her head towards the blond puppet.
"I see you have a new puppet." Clopin nodded.
"Clopett has been bothering me for a while to make him a lady friend." Clopin pulled out the puppet of himself.
"If you get a pretty lady why shouldn't I!?" it squeaked.
"Quiet" scolded Clopin, "The grown ups are talking." Madeleine couldn't contain her mirth and burst out into a fit of laughter.
"I'm not always sure the term "grown up" can be applied to you." Clopin put his hand over his heart in mock offense.
"You wound me Mademoiselle Clement!" he cried.
"I'm fairly certain you'll survive," Madeleine quipped. This sent both of them into peals of laughter.
When their mirth subsided Clopin's smile became softer. She could tell he wanted nothing more than to pull her into his arms. Just as she longed to be in them. But alas, with all the people and guards around it would be nothing short of suicidal.
Suddenly Clopin dropped a piece of paper on the ground. They both bent to pick it up and he pressed the paper into her hand. She looked at him curiously and made to open the note but a shake of his head stopped her.
"Not here," he murmered softly. Madeleine nodded. Clopin's smile returned and he kissed the back of her hand.
"Until we meet again Mademoiselle Clement," he then quickly made his way down a side alley and disappeared. Madeleine looked behind her and saw two large guards heading in her direction. Internally cursing their timing (and possibly their existence), Madeleine began to head home.
Once she was on the deserted path to her house she took out the letter which was address to her and Henri. It read,
7'oclock, your house. Four others to come.
Madeleine furrowed her brow in confusion before hurrying home to give the letter to Henri.
HoND
Her brother's face was serious as he read the letter.
"Well?" asked Madeleine slightly impatiently. "What does it mean?"
"It's from Harodain. He and the other few people who help the gypsies are coming over for a meeting. He looked at her with a small smirk.
"I'm sure your darling Clopin will be there too." Madeleine could feel her cheeks burning at the implication and Henri laughed. Madeleine sighed. He really saw straight through her.
Once everything was prepared for their guests Madeleine went upstairs and changed from her day dress that she used for running errands and into a slightly nicer dark purple dress, for much like Clopin purple was often her preferred color, with some lace detailing on the bodice and neckline. She had actually made it herself and was quite proud of it.
After brushing out her long gold hair she decided to pass the time by doing some sewing. Sewing was a passion of hers. She loved the comforting rhythm of the needle flowing in and out of the fabric. She was looking foward to tonight but was also a little nervous. As she began to sew Henri's cloak she sung to herself softly.
The valley green was so serene
In the middle ran a stream so blue
A maiden fair in dispair, once had met her true love there and she told him.
She would say
Promise me, when you see, a white rose you'll think of me
I love you so, never let go, I will be your ghost of a rose
Author's Note: Well another chapter as promised. Again I should update weekly although I might get lucky and post multiple chapters at once so keep checking back for updates. Chapter 7: Secret Meetings
Chapter Text
Just as she completed the final stitches there was a knock at the door. Checking her hair a final time in the mirror Madeleine ran downstairs to answer it.
On the thresh hold were three people. One was a short old man with a balding head and a frizzy white beard. He had a kind old face and similar to the memories of her own grandfather.
The other two were much younger and from their closeness were likely husband and wife both also appeared to be maybe 5 or six years older than her. The man was of average height with curly brown hair and the woman was of similar size with a slim figure and bright red hair that Madeleine could just barely see under the woman's hood.
"This is the Clement house correct?" asked the young man.
"If it isn't we're in rather big trouble," chuckled the old man.
"Yes, that's us," said Henri, coming up behind his sister.
"Please come in," said Madeleine, stepping to the side so they could enter.
The red-haired woman smiled as she removed her hood.
"I'm Ginevra Meunier and this is my husband Fabian," said man nodded. "We own the mill a little way to the North."
"And I'm Byron Leandre. I run the bookstore by Notre Dame. Is anyone else here yet?"
Henri shook his head as they sat down at the table.
"No," replied Henri.
"Can I help you in the kitchen?" offered Ginevra.
"Certainly," replied Madeleine and they headed to the kitchen to get the food and drink.
"So, I hear you're new," said Ginevra. Madeleine nodded.
"Yes, at least I am. Henri's been here for a while."
"It's kind of you and your brother to offer to help," Ginevra told her with a smile.
"We do our best. Even if it seems most of Paris seems to have forgotten the concept of compassion," replied Madeleine picking up a tray with drinks.
They reentered to find that another man had joined them. He inclined his head towards Madeleine.
"Francois Aubert, weaver."
"A pleasure," replied Madeleine as she and Ginevra sat down. Around ten minutes later there was yet another knock on the door. Madeleine rushed up to get it and found Harodain and Clopin standing outside.
"Everyone here?" asked Harodain gruffly.
"Yes," Madeleine answered as they entered.
"Bonsoir Madeleine, you look especially lovely tonight," said Clopin kissing her hand.
"Bonsoir Clopin, and merci," she said with a smile her heart fluttering in her chest
"We can talk more after," Clopin whispered making Madeleine's smile turn to a grin.
"Alright now everybody is here let's get down to business," Harodain said coming to stand at the head of the table.
"As you know the Clements are the latest addition to our circle, replacing the butcher's safehouse."
"Nice to know we aren't the only decent people in Paris," said Francois causing Byron to chuckle.
"Yes, we're all quite grateful," Harodain continued.
"Now I have a small family that we need to get out of the city as soon as possible."
"I'm going to get some more supplies from outside the city, I can take them out in my cart," offered Fabian.
"I think there might be a few too many in this family to board at your place," said Clopin worriedly.
"My house is less full given I don't have children, you could hide them out at my place and Fabian can pick them up the next morning." Francois put in.
"That sounds excellent. Now Byron what about those supplies for the Court, I requested?"
"I have them in. But getting them to you without getting noticed might be tricky," said Byron.
"Madeleine could retrieve them and bring them here," suggested Henri and Madeleine nodded in agreement. It was fascinating seeing everyone working together like this.
"Then I could come get them and bring them to the Court," put in Clopin, perhaps slightly more eagerly than expected.
"Yes, that's your only motivation," Madeleine heard Harodain mutter under his breath. Madeleine's lips twitched upward at this.
More specific details about the various plans were laid out and discussed. By the time they finished they had been talking for two hours.
"We'd better get going, my sister said she'd look after the children but I imagine she wants to get home," commented Ginevra and Fabian nodded in agreement. He didn't seem to be a man off too many words.
"Well, that's about everything finished," said Harodain with a nod. As Madeleine helped get the Meunier's cloaks she asked,
"It's brave of you to do this given you have children." Surprisingly it was Fabian who answered.
"If we turned down those in need, I could never look at my children again. We want them to learn to do the right thing even when it's difficult."
Madeleine nodded in understanding. One by one the people left until only Clopin and Harodain were left. Harodain turned to his son as he left.
"Don't be too long."Clopin nodded.
"I'm going to have a smoke out back," said Henri with a small smile heading outside.
"Alone at last," said Madeleine with a smile. Clopin grinned.
Author’s note: Another week another chapter. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments. I promise we’ll get more Madeleine/Clopin fluff in the next chapter. Thanks to everyone who has read and especially those who have commented. Your feedback keeps me motivated to keep this story going. Also, yes Ginevra and Fabian are the Miller’s family from the movie. Meunier means miller, Leandre means Lion Man (so bravery), and Aubert means noble.
Chapter 8: Missions and Morals
Chapter Text
"And now I can do what I've been dying to all day," he swept Madeleine into his arms and kissed her. Happy to be back in Clopin's arms Madeleine returned the kiss eagerly. They pulled apart and he sighed.
"We don't get nearly enough time to do that."
"What with the dodging of guards I'm not surprised," Madeleine replied sadly as she leaned her head against his chest, her arms around his middle.
"It doesn't make it less infuriating though," Clopin replied. He pulled back to look her in the eyes.
"I know, when I come to get the supplies tomorrow you and I can go on a nice long walk, no Frollo, no guards, and no nosy towns people." Madeleine smiled.
"It sounds like heaven. I'll hold you to that promise."
"Of course, I would never break my word to such a lovely lady," Clopin replied in a joking tone. They kissed once again before Clopin left with a bow. Madeleine watched him go, eager for tomorrow.
HoND
Madeleine made her way to Byron's bookshop which was in the shadow of Notre Dame. She opened the door, causing the belle to ring. Byron looked up from the front desk, smiling from behind his white whiskers.
"Ah, Mademoiselle Clement!"
"Bonjour Monsieur Leandre," replied Madeleine with a smile.
"If you come to the back I have some of the books you asked for," he told her gesturing to the backroom.
"Wonderful!" Madeleine replied keeping an eye on the two other customers in the shop. She followed Byron to the back. Once the curtain was pulled just Byron brought out the medical supplies. He placed them in the basket Madeleine brought and added some books on top to cover the materials.
"There you are," he said quietly.
"Thank you," Madeleine whispered. They returned to the the front.
"Thank you for the books! I'm sure they'll be quite useful Madeleine said as she made for the front door. She smirked slightly. Mission accomplished. Now she could head home and meet Clopin. Her heartbeat quickened at the thought of the gypsy prince. She sped up her pace, eager to get home.
When she arrived the house was empty. Henri was out getting some spare parts. Setting the basket on the kitchen table Madeleine headed out back with some sewing to sit on the bench swing that hung from a great oak tree and wait for Clopin.
HoND
Clopin hurried to the Clement's house, eager to see Madeleine. He checked several times to ensure he wasn't being followed. As he approached the house he heard a sweet voice singing.
Heading around to the back of the house he saw Madeleine sitting on the benchswing absorbed in her sewing as she sang. Her blond hair glinted in the Clopin stayed out of sight for a moment to listen
"Come all ye fair and tender girls
That flourish in your prime. Beware beware,
Keep your garden fair. Let no man steal your thyme.
Let no man steal your thyme.
For when your thyme it is past and gone,
He'll care no more for you,
And every place where your time was waste,
Will all spread or' with rue. Will all spread or' with rue.
A garden's son was standing by, three flowers he gave to me
The pink, the blue, and the violet true, and the red red rosie tree
And the red red rosie tree.
But I refused the red rose bush and gained the willow tree.
That all the world may plainly see.
How my love slighted me, how my love slighted me."
Clopin snuck up behind her and covered her eyes with his gloved hands
"Bonjour my little songbird."
Madeleine gasped in surprise but then laughed as he removed his hands and came to sit next to her. She set aside her sewing and they kissed.
"You didn't tell me you could sing," Clopin said when they pulled apart. Madeleine blushed a pretty shade of pink.
"I don't like to show off." Clopin chuckled at Madeleine's modesty.
"Ma Cherie, your voice is lovely I only wish you could perform with me." Madeleine smiled.
"Perhaps one day. For now your performance's are plenty enthralling for the children as they are."
"I appreciate the vote of confidence mon amour," Clopin said squeezing her hand lightly.
"You really love entertaining those children don't you?" Madeleine asked with a soft smile. Clopin shrugged.
"They are innocent. They don't hold the prejudice that the adults have."
"They haven't had their hearts hardened and influenced by the world," added Madeleine with an understanding nod. Clopin sighed.
"I suppose a part of me hopes that the children will remember the morals of my tales as they grow, so that they do not continue to spread the hatred towards those who are different."
"That the next generation may be an improvement upon the last," suggested Madeleine. Clopin nodded. Madeleine always seemed to be able to perfectly understand him. It was one of the things he found so wonderful about her. She squeezed his hand.
"There's always hope."
"I'm afraid I have to keep reminding myself of that fact," Clopin replied.
"Oh that reminds me," Madeleine said taking some coins out of her apron pocket and handing them to him. Clopin looked at her in confusion and Madeleine laughed.
"It's for the performance yesterday. I was going to give it to you then but those stupid guards showed up." She gave a slight huff which made Clopin smile. She really was adorable.
"You of all people don't need to pay me," he told her but she shook her head.
"The happiness you give those children and the rest of your audience is worth more than any gold." Seeing she was not to be detered Clopin pocketed the gold. He wrapped an arm around her and Madeleine leaned her head on his shoulder.
They stayed life that for a while chatting merrily. They were interrupted by the sound of heavy hooves clopping out front. Madeleine and Clopin both sat bolt upright.
"That's not Henri," said Madeleine suspiciously. They hurried inside and Madeleine peaked through the closed curtains. She gasped.
"Frollo!"
Author's note: Another chapter done! As usual thank you to everyone who is reading this and especially those who have commented. PLEASE take the time to leave a note in the comments about your thoughts on the story. It really means a lot. The song is called Let no man steal your thyme from Far from the Madding Crowd. Until next week folks!
Chapter 9: Interrogations
Chapter Text
There was shock and fear in her tone. Clopin's heart plummeted. If Frollo caught them...
"Quick!" Madeleine whispered, opening a cupboard under the water basin. It was a tight fit but Clopin was no stranger to hiding in small spaces. Madeleine closed the door just as there was a knock at the front door. Clopin heard her footsteps retreat and the door open.
"Bonjour Minister Frollo, to what do I owe the honor?"
"I was simply passing though and thought to stop and give you some advice," came Frollo's sinister voice. Two pairs of footsteps entered the kitchen and a chair scraped on the floor.
"Quite a lot of medical supplies for two people," commented Frollo shrewdly. If Clopin had thought he couldn't become any more worried he was wrong. His insides seemed to turn to ice at Frollo's words.
"My brother is a tinker and I'm afraid I'm rather clumsy. We like to be well prepared. Now, what did you wish to tell me?" asked Madeleine calmly and without missing a beat.
"It's come to my attention you and your brother are quite friendly with the gypsy vermin that have invaded Paris." Clopin felt a rush of anger at the insult to his people.
"My brother and I give them money for their performances but I'd hardly call us friendly," replied Madeleine steadily.
"Nonetheless it is unwise to associate with such people."
"I assure you Henri and I are simply doing our best as good Christians. Christ helped the poor and treated both jews and gentiles with kindness and respect. I see no difference between them and the gypsies."
"Gypsies lie and steal, they spread sin and temptation. They're kind must be eradicated for the sake of protecting the souls of the innocent," drawled Frollo.
"God alone can judge the innocent from the guilty," replied Madeleine her tone still cold as ice. The chair scraped again and Clopin Frollo had stood up.
"I warn you Mademoiselle Clement. Do not allow your compassion to blind your judgement. It is a crime to associate with gypsies and no one will be exempt from justice if such an association is discovered.
"I'll be sure to bear that in mind. Rest assured my brother and I are not foolish enough to impede justice. We would only wish to help it."
"I'm glad to hear that. Thank you for your time Mademoiselle Clement and remember my warning. The front door closed and after another minute Madeleine opened the the cupboard door.
"It's safe," she said, helping him out.
"That was close." Clopin said gazing at Madeleine with worry.
"Indeed." replied Madeleine with a nod. Clopin reached out and stroked her cheek.
"Still sure you want to associate with me?" he asked softly. Madeleine rolled her eyes and stepped closer, putting her arms around his neck.
"It will take more than some bigoted judge to tear me away from you. I don't care what the future holds as long as I'm with you." Clopin's hand that wasn't on her cheek strayed to her waist.
"You really are one of the bravest women I know." Madeleine shrugged.
"Or the most foolish. One of the two." Clopin chuckled.
"Perhaps a bit of both." He leaned down and kissed Madeleine inhaling the scent of fresh freesia that seemed to always surround her. He knew then that he was truly starting to fall for her. She had handled Frollo with poise and fire. He was beyond lucky to have found her. Pulling away he smiled broadly
"You know with your performance skills you really should consider taking up acting," Clopin said with a smile to lighten the mood. Madeleine laughed.
"We'll see. I doubt I could ever compete with the talents of you and your people."
"You never know," replied Clopin slyly.
"Why do I have the feeling that's going to come back to haunt me?" asked Madeleine with a quirk of her eyebrow. Clopin laughed but did not reply.
"Whatever will I do with you," she said dryly. Clopin cocked an eyebrow.
"I have a few ideas."
"Oh hush you," replied Madeleine before leaning up and kissing him. When they finally pulled apart again. He smirked.
"Well, that's one way to quiet someone."
"Ridiculous man," muttered Madeleine leaning her head on his chest.
"But YOUR ridiculous man." Clopin told her resting his chin on her head. Madeleine hummed in agreement.
They stood there for a while not speaking, simply taking comfort in the prescence of one another. After what seemed like an age Madeleine finally pulled away.
"It's getting late, you should take the supplies back to the Court." Clopin nodded and picked up the basket of supplies that had come close to betraying them.
"Thank you, Madeleine. For everything." Madeleine smiled.
"It's my pleasure. I'll see you again soon?" Clopin nodded.
"You can be certain of it." With a final kiss Clopin began making his way from the Clement's house to the Court.
Author's note: Well, that was close! Our couple will have to watch out! Thanks to everyone who's read this and special thanks to those who commented. It means a lot so please if you like this take a moment to drop your thoughts below. Check back next week for the next installment in the story of Madeleine and Clopin!
Chapter 10: Preparations
Chapter Text
The day was extremely sunny as Madeleine and Clopin walked through a bright green meadow near the Clement's house. Spring had passed and Summer was upon them. For Clopin this meant that preparations for the Festival of Fools were underway.
"So, have you got any special plans for the festival?" asked Madeleine.
"Come now, you can't expect me to spoil the surprise said Clopin placing a hand on his chest in mock offense. Madeleine laughed, the beautiful bell like sound even clearer in the empty meadow.
"No I suppose not," she replied, jumping up on a narrow rock wall and beginning to walk along it with her arms out for balance. Clopin walked along side the wall with her fingertips resting on the palm of his gloved hand.
"Are you excited for the festival ma cherie? It will be your first time."
Madeleine smiled.
"Oh yes! A chance to see you all performing together? It's going to be marvelous!" Cloppin grinned at her words.
"Yes it's the most wonderful day of the year!" he paused, "Well, second most wonderful." Madeleine glanced at him in confusion.
"Second? What is the first?" her distraction caused her to slip and Clopin, having anticipated this moved quickly to catch her. He smiled down at her as she put her arms around his neck.
"The first is the day that you rescued me mon amour," he said softly. Her smile widened and she kissed him. They pulled apart and he set her on her feet. "I'm afraid I have to leave early today. My father wants me to help prepare to smuggle a family into Paris tonight."
Madeleine nodded.
"It's alright." There was no hint of disappointment or annoyance in her tone.
"Merci Madeleine," Madeleine shrugged.
"Da rien mon coeur." Madeleine's understanding of his people's plight was one of the things he loved most about her. Other women might have gotten jealous or annoyed that he couldn't always pay attention to them but Madeleine did not.
He took her hand and they carefully made their way back to the Clement's house.
HoND
Clopin entered the hustle and bustle of the Court of Miracles and made his way straight to his father's tent. Harodain looked up as he entered.
"Busy day?" he asked with a small smirk. Clopin rolled his eyes good naturedly.
"Immensely."
"Good, are you ready for tonight then?" his father asked. Clopin nodded. The attempts to smuggle people in and out of Paris were one of the most dangerous operations. There was so much that could go wrong. The tale of how the Hunchback came to live in Notre Dame was a perfect example.
"Absolutely. They're coming by boat correct?" he asked. Harodain inclined his head.
"Yes, we have three hours until we leave. Be ready."
"I will," said Clopin before turning to leave. As he began to walk away he was intercepted by Esmerelda and her goat Djali.
"Hello cousin," she said cheerfully.
"Hello Esme," he replied with a smile.
"I still can't believe your father won't let me perform at the festival!" she said to him indignantly as they began to walk.
"Your ankle is still recovering from when you sprained it. You might cause more damage to yourself. And besides, Frollo has been particularly harsh recently. It'a bad time to get noticed by him." Explained Clopin.
"I'm not afraid of him!" said Esmerelda her green eyes flashing. Clopin sighed.
"I'm well aware of that."
"Someone should to something to stop him! People should fight back!" Clopin shook his head at her idealism. He wanted Frollo gone as muchas any gypsy, but one thing his father had taught him was caution. The odds of them overthrowing Frollo were not good. And even if they did the cost would be far too great.
Clearly realizing she wasn't going to get any support on the idea his cousin changed subjects.
"Sooo...How's your girlfriend?" she asked with a wicked grin that made Clopin feel wary. "I really need to meet her. I have some wonderful stories about you to share." Clopin's eyes widened.
"You keep quiet!"
"Hmm maybe the one about the time your prank on your aunt failed and you ended up..." Clopin made to cover her mouth but she ducked and grabbing his hat, ran. Clopin chased her all the way back to her tent where he tackled her and began tickling her.
"Stop! Stop! I give in!" she gasped between laughs. He let her up and she returned his hat. Esmerelda smiled.
"Seriously though, I would like to meet her given how you seem to have fallen madly in love with her. Clopin nodded.
"I'm sure you two would get along very well."
"I'm going to teach Djali some new tricks," she said motioning to her goat. "Want to come?" Clopin shook his head.
"I have to get ready to go out with Father," he told her. Worry filled Esmerelda's face.
"Good luck then. And watch out for the guards." Clopin took her hand.
"I will. Don't worry though. Father's done this before. We'll be there and back before you know it."
"I hope so," said Esmerelda before leaving. Clopin walked back to his tent to wait for his father. He felt a sense of foreboding but shoved it aside. Everything was going to be fine. Wasn't it?
Author's note: Part 10 is complete! Please let me know what you think in the comments and thanks again to those of you who already commented. Your words me a lot! Thanks also to the reviewer who corrected my French. Until next week!
Chapter 11: Disaster and Pain
Chapter Text
Clopin and his father carefully crept through the streets of Paris, stopping at each corner to check for guards.
They made it to the river where they were supposed to meet the gypsy's and waited the shadows.
Clopin glanced up. It was a cloudless night and the moon shone down brightly. It's glow making the cobblestone streets shine. Were the situation less stressful Clopin might have paused to admire it.
He was brought back from his musings by a nudge from his father. A boat carrying an a pregnant woman, her husband, and a young boy of around eight. All three looked terrified, especially the little boy.
Harodain signaled to Clopin and the two of them moved to the to the riverbank.
"Welcome," said Harodain quietly. Clopin placed a small money pouch in the hand of the boatman.
"For your silence," he told him. Clopin helped the heavily pregnant woman out of the boat.
"We must hurry," whispered Harodain. The husband nodded.
The five of them began to head back as quickly as possible. Clopin helped the wife while her husband kept a grip on the child. The streets were silent for the most part. It seemed luck was on their side.
They were about halfway there when seemingly out of nowhere a patrol of soldiers appeared. They spotted the group of gypsies. Immediately the five of them began to run. The guards were in hot pursuit.
They ducked into a small alley and the guards ran past. His father had an intense look of concentration on his face and Clopin knew he was trying to find a way out. He looked at Clopin.
"I'll distract them while you run. They'll be back any second." Clopin felt fear rush through him.
"Let me go, I..."
"No," said Harodain sharply. "You are me heir and far more valuable." His gaze softened for a moment. "A king must make sacrifices. Now get ready to run."
Before Clopin could argue further his father had jumped out of hiding and shouted to get the guards attention. Clopin's belief in God was shaky at best but he sent a prayer for his father's safety as he ushered the family through the streets.
They made it back to the Court and walked through the sewers. Clopin's heart was heavy. When they reached the main part of the Court he heard murmuring.
New families were not a strange sight but the absence of their king was not. Orfeus walked up to him.
"Where is Harodain?" he asked.
"He used himself as a distraction so we could get away," replied Clopin who felt numb.
"We'll send a patrol out to see what happened," suggested Orfeus but Clopin shook his head.
"No, if he's caught then there is little we can do. We can't risk more of us being captured. We'll know by morning." It killed Clopin to say this but he had to do the responsible thing. That's what his father would want even if every fiber of his being wanted to run back.
He walked back to his tent, not wanting to answer the questions that were sure to come. He sat down on his bed, the sense of foreboding returning. What was he to do?
HoND
As Clopin had suspected it didn't take long to learn his father's fate. By the following afternoon an announcement of the gypsy King's capture had been given out and gallows were quickly erected.
Frollo was obviously excited to execute his prisoner. Clopin felt sick at the thought of his father chained up alone in a dark cell. A rescue was out of the questions as the Palace of Justice was nearly impregnable and there wasn't even time to try.
Dusk, the time of his father's execution came far too quickly. Clopin dressed in a dark cloak to cover his gypsy attire made his way to the gallows in front of the Palace of Justice. A fairly large crowd was there to watch.
Harodain stood proud on the raised platform. His face was covered in bruises but he kept himd his hands tied behind his back. Clopin knew his father would not be allowed to speak. Common French criminals could have some last words but not a gypsy. Clopin scowled double standard
The (false) charges were read off as a noose was placed around his father's neck. Suddenly Harodain caught Clopin's eye. He held his father's gaze until the trap door was pulled from under Harodain and his neck broke. The snap seemed to echo around the square. Or perhaps it was simply Clopin's imagination.
Slowly people began to depart now that the spectacle was over. Finally all that was left was one guard watching the body. Clopin snuck around behind the guard and slit his throat. Clopin didn't like killing but he wasn't about to allow the guard the chance to call for help or be able to identify his attackers.
Meanwhile Orfeus had moved to cut Harodain loose from the noose and swung the body over his shoulder. They might not have been able to stop Frollo from killing his father but they would not let his body be desecrated by being hung like a sausage in a butcher's window for all to see.
HoND
Once back at the Court Harodain was given a proper funeral his body was wrapped in a shroud woven by some of the women in the Court, and his body buried in the graveyard that led to one of the Court entrances. Then everyone gathered together to tell stories about him as was tradition.
Clopin however couldn't stand to hear all these stories about his father and the endless condolence's that would come. He knew people meant well, but it was simply too painful. It wasn't until his feet had carried him out of the Court and halfway to the Clement's house before he knew who.
Author's Note: Poor Clopin! Hopefully Madeleine can help. Special thanks to everyone who has commented I love hearing my readers thoughts and I'm so glad people are enjoying this. Please leave your thoughts in the comments!
Chapter 12: Consolation
Chapter Text
As he approached the house it occurred to Clopin that given the late hour Madeleine could very likely be asleep. However, when he walked around to the back of the house, he saw her form up in the window a gold light behind her making her appear angelic.
She sat there sewing. He was about to try and get her attention when she looked down and he saw her eyes widen. Setting aside her sewing she opened the window looking perplexed.
"Clopin!" she said softly, surprise evident in both her tone and expression. "What are you doing here?"
"I needed to talk to someone," replied Clopin in a whisper.
"Well come up," said Madeleine with a nod.
Her room was on the second floor but it it was little trouble for Clopin to climb uo and through the window. Madeleiene wore a light pink dressing gown with her blond hair was in a braid down her back.
She gestured for him to sit on the widow seat and he complied.
"What's wrong?" she asked placing her hand over his.
"You didn't hear the announcement?" asked Clopin.
"No Henri and I didn't go into town today," she replied with a shake of her head.
"My father was executed today." Clopin told her. Madeleine placed a hand over her mouth in shock. Slowly she withdrew it.
"Oh Clopin, I'm sorry." She drew him into her arms. Clopin buried his head in her shoulder and began to cry. All the feelings he had repressed since his father left to act as the distraction flooding out.
HoND
Sleep hadn't been coming easily Madeleine that night. All day she had felt a strange sense of unease that she couldn't place. So she had decided to do what she always did when her mind was troubled. Sew.
She had only just lit a candle and begun her work when she had seen Clopin standing beneath her window. Instantly, she knew something was wrong from the somber look on his face. Once he had climbed inside, she sat down, ready to comfort him.
"What's wrong?"
Clopin appeared nearly distraught.
"You didn't hear the announcement?" he asked. Madeleine shook her head. Henri had needed help with some repairs so she hadn't made her normal trip into town.
"No, Henri and I didn't go into town today."
"My father was executed today," said Clopin his voice wavering slightly. Madeleine's heart dropped to her stomach and she gasped now completely understanding the reason for Clopin's distress.
She pulled him into her arms as he began to cry. For a while she simply allowed him to sob into her shoulder, clinging to her for support. She began to hum softly as she ran her hand up and down his back in an attempt to comfort him. It seemed to work as his breathing steadied and sobs subsided.
"What happened? She asked still holding his hand.
"We were helping smuggle a family into Paris when some guards saw us. Father left to asct as a distraction and was caught . You can guess the rest." Madeleine didn't need the details to know that Frollo would have been ecstatic at capturing the King of the gypsies and probably would have taken pleasure in torturing the poor man.
"There was nothing that you could have done," she said consolingly.
Clopin nodded still looking somber.
"I know but that doesn't make me feel less guilty. I feel like I should have done something."
"Your father would not have wanted you to blame yourself in any way," she told him. He sighed.
"I'll just have to keep telling myself that. I'm sorry to impose on you like this but I had to talk to someone and I can't let any of my people see their king break down." He turned his face away shamefully
"It's not an imposition mon amour." Madeleine told him turning his face to look her in the eyes.
"I'm not ready to be King Madeleine," he murmered miserably.
"Good ruler's rarely are?" Madeleine replied quietly. "But you aren't in this alone. I'll be by your side as long as you wish me to be."
Clopin reached to stroke her hair.
"I'm afraid that might just be forever," he said softly managing a small smile. Madeleine offered him a slight smile in return.
"That's alright with me." Clopin kissed her gently before standing up.
"I should go," he said, Madeleine nodded and stood up opening the window seat and was about to climb down when he paused to look at Madeleine. "Thank you again mon coeur. If I have you then perhaps I may be able to do this after all."
Madeleine leaned forward and kissed his cheek.
"Anytime." Clopin climbed down and Madeleine stood watching him until his form had disappeared.
She felt terrible for him and knew this was a wound that would not easily heal. But she also knew she would support him through whatever was to come. Because that's what one did when they love someone. Yes, love, she hadn't said it to his face yet, now was certainly not the time, but she knew in hear heart she was truly and deeply in love with the new King of the Gypsies.
Author’s note: Well, at least he’s got Madeleine on his side. Thanks again to all who have commented, it means a lot. If you haven’t I really encourage you to leave your thoughts. I’d love to hear your opinions. Until next week (which will hopefully be more cheerful😊)
Chapter 13: The Festival
Chapter Text
It was a sunny day and the main square of Paris was an explosion of color. Streamers hung from poles and wooden stages had been erected for the performances.
Madeleine looked around in awe. Nothing in her small village had ever occurred like this. In the middle of the preparations she saw Clopin giving directions. He had several bells hanging off the cloth of his jester's outfit which was a patchwork of purple and gold. She walked up to him.
"Bonjour Clopin," she said cheerfully. He turned to smile at her.
"Bonjour Mademoiselle Clement. Excited for the festival?" Madeleine grinned.
"It looks spectacular!"
"I should hope so," a look of insecurity crossed Clopin's face. It's the first time I've done it without my father." Madeleine's smile softened.
"You'll do him proud, I know it." Clopin offered her a small smile.
"Thank you." Madeleine was about to reply when a shout from behind them rang out. Madeleine turned to see a guard approach.
"You! Gypsy scum! Why are you bothering this young woman!?" Clopin raised an eyebrow,
"One would think you'd at least have the brains to come up with a more original insult." Madeleine groaned internally but quickly stepped between the two men.
"He's done nothing to bother me. I was simply inquiring about the festival, so leave him alone!" her tone was sharp and she glared at the guard who despite being a head taller than her quailed slightly. He huffed.
"Just trying to do my duty."
"Your duty is to protect the people who reside inside Paris NOT harass innocents!" snapped Madeleine. The guard shot a final glare at Clopin and stalked away.
"Must you antagonize them?" Madeleine asked Clopin with a sigh. Clopins shrugged.
"They'd arrest me either way."
"True," muttered Madeleine grudgingly.
"It looks like I once again owe you for preventing my arrest," Clopin told her but Madeleine shook her head.
"You owe me nothing. Common decency shouldn't have a price."
Clopin reached forward and kissed the back of her hand.
"Until the festival then," Madeleine grinned.
"Until then."
HoND
A little while later Madeleine and Henri made their way through the crowds. They had to be careful due to Henri's leg. "Slow down Little Leine! The parade isn't going to disappear." Madeleine huffed slightly at the diminutive nickname.
"I'm sorry, I just want to get a good view." Henri chuckled.
"Fair enough." The pair found a small wall which Henri leaned against. Madeleine hopped up on top of it to see over the crowd of drunken revelers.
"Oh look! It's the grim reaper," commented Henri dryly as he pointed to where Frollo had just exited his carriage.
"He looks unhappy," said Madeleine studying Frollo's face which was twisted in disgust. Henri snorted.
"I couldn't tell the difference. He always looks like he smells horse dung." Madeleine laughed at her brother's jest.
"Truer words were never spoken." Suddenly chanting began and a parade of people in black robes began moving through the crowd.
Come one, come all!
Leave your loops and milking stools
Coop the hens and pen the mules
Come one, come all!
Close the churches and the schools
It's the day for breaking rules
Come and join the Feast of...
Fools!
Clopin came sliding out from between the robed figures and burst into a jaunty tune.
Once a year we throw a party here in town
Once a year we turn all Paris upside down
Every man's a king and every king's a clown
Once again it's Topsy Turvy Day
It's the day the devil in us gets released
It's the day we mock the prig and shock the priest
Everything is topsy turvy at the Feast of Fools
Madeleine laughed and cheered with the rest of the crowd as she watched Clopin perform his acrobatric tricks and sing. He flipped, spun, and practically bounced through the crowd.
It seemed most people had set aside their prejudice as the crowd interacted with the gypsies without any hatred. As if for this one day, they saw them as no different than any other Parisian. Madeleine now understood why all the gypsies looked forward to this day.
Clopin concluded his song by crowning a drunken man "The King of Fools". Once that was done the parade broke up into various displays around the square. Madeleine jumped down from the wall and glanced at Henri who nodded.
"You go on. Just be careful." Madeleine's brow furrowed.
"Of the gypsies?"
"No. Of the drunks. People can get quite carried away."
"Alright!" said Madeleine with a grin. As she began to leave she heard Henri call.
"And I want you back before dark!"
Madeleine slipped through the crowd, her small stature made things a bit difficult but at last she made it over to a corner where some gypsies were playing music.
The one that stood out was a woman, slightly younger than her, with bright green eyes and dark hair. Next to the woman a goat was dancing to the tambourine the woman played.
Madeleine clapped along with the music. The song ended and people began to move on to the next display. Madeleine was about to leave when someone tapped her shoulder. She turned to see the green eyed woman.
"Are you Madeleine Clement?" asked the woman. Madeleine nodded.
"Yes," the woman grinned.
"You're as pretty as Clopin said. I'm his cousin Esmerelda."
"Oh! Clopin told me about you as well!" exclaimed Madeleine. So this was Clopin's mischief making cousin.
"Good things I hope," laughed Esmerelda.
"More or less," giggled Madeleine. "You play very well," she added.
"Thank you. I wanted to dance but I hurt my ankle a few days before the festival." Esmerelda looked slightly miffed about this.
"Well I look forward to seeing you dance when you're better," said Madeleine cheerfully.
"Not causing trouble are you?" said a familiar voice behind them. Both girls turned to see Clopin standing behind them his hands on his hips.
"Don't believe a word she says," he told Madeleine warningly. Esmerelda laughed.
"You just don't want me to embarass you." Madeleine grinned.
"Oh now I MUST speak with you!" Clopin gave an exaggerated groan.
"Mon dieu Esme, you live to torment me!"
"True," said Esmerelda cheekily.
"I'll see you after the festival?" Clopin asked her quietly.
"Absolutely," replied Madeleine. Clopin then bounded away.
"I hope we meet again soon," Madeleine told Esmerelda.
"As do I," the younger woman replied. She then began to play another song while Madeleine continued to explore the festival.
Author's Note: Another chapter as promised! It's nice to write something cheerful again. I didn't include the full song because I want to save that for the events of the actual movie. Thanks to all my readers and especially those who have commented. It means a lot to hear from you so if you can take a moment to leave your thoughts in the comments I would greatly appreciate it! Until next week!
Chapter 14: A Perfect Duet
Chapter Text
The festival eventually wound down in the early evening with people heading home for dinner, or in some cases the tavern for more alcohol.
Madeleine was walking by the enterance of an alley when a hand shot out and grabbed her arm, pulling her into the alley and out of sight. She gasped but let out a sigh of relief when she saw it was only Clopin. She hit him on the arm.
"You scared me!" she said scoldingly.
"Mon dieu, you do hit hard," Clopin chuckled. "My deepest apologies for freightening you." Madeleine stepped closer and gave him a peck on the lips.
"You're forgiven."
"Good! Shall we go then?"Clopin asked offering his arm.
"As long as I get home before dark." Madeleine told him.
"I think we can manage that," said Clopin and they headed off. Clopin led her to the outskirts of Paris. It always amazed Madeleine how well Clopin knew the city. Eventually the buildings gave way to green grass and trees.
They talked amiably as they went. Finally they reached a tall hill. It was quite a climb and both were slightly out of breath by the time they reached the top. However the view was with it. The sunset was clearly visible. A mixture of shade of red, yellow, and orange streeked across the sky.
"Oh Clopin, it's lovely!" exclaimed Madeleine. Clopin moved behind her and wrapped his long arms around her petite form.
"I knew you'd love it. Just as I love you," he whispered the last part in her ear. Madeleine's breath caught in her throat at the declaration and her heart sped up, She turned to face him and placed her arms about his neck.
"And just as I love you. Her right hand came to rest on his ceek the pale skin of her hand contrasting with Clopin's brown skin. It was a physical representation of how different they were. And yet, Madeleine couldn't help but feel that they were meant to be. They came from such different backgrounds but had fallen in love.
He leaned his forehead against hers and Madeleine closed her eyes for a moment.
"Please just promise me something," she whispered.
"Anything mon coeur," Clopin replied.
"Whatever comes we'll face it together. We won't let anyone part us."
"That's a promise I'm more than happy to keep," he said with a smile before pressing his lips to hers. After a moment Clopin began to hum and started to lead Madeleine in a dance. He then started to sing.
I found a love
For me
Oh darling, just dive right in
And follow my lead
Well, I found a girl
Beautiful and sweet
Oh, I never knew you were the someone
Waitin' for me
'Cause we were just kids when we fell in love
Not knowin' what it was
I will not give you up this time
But darling, just kiss me slow
Your heart is all I own
And in your eyes, you're holding mine
Baby, I'm dancing in the dark
With you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass
Listening to our favourite song
When you said you looked a mess
I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it
Darling, you look perfect tonight
Blushing slightly Madeleine began to sing
Well, I found a man
Stronger than anyone I know
He shares my dreams
I hope that someday we'll share a home
I found a love
To carry more than just my secrets
To carry love, to carry children
Of our own
We are still kids, but we're so in love
Fightin' against all odds
I know we'll be alright this time
Darling, just hold my hand
Be your girl, you'll be my man
And I see my future in your eyes
Then their voices joined in harmony as they both sang,
Baby, I'm dancing in the dark
With you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass
While listenin' to our favorite song
I have faith in what I see
Now I know I have met an angel
In person
And she looks perfect
And he looks perfect
No I don't deserve this
You look perfect tonight
They continued to dance, barely noticing night falling.
HoND
It was slightly past dark when when Madeleine returned home. Clopin dropped her off with a final kiss.
Madeleine opened the door quietly, hoping Henri had already gone to bed. No such luck.
When she entered the kitchen she found Henri leaning against the counter his arms crossed.
"Perhaps you could explain how the sky being pitch black equals before dark." He said slightly sharply. Madeleine hung her head.
"I'm sorry. Clopin and I lost track of time." Henri sighed some of the anger fading from his face.
"I figured you were with him but I wasn't sure. You had me worried. I'm supposed to look after you and I can't do that if I don't know where you are." He walked towards her and pulled her into his arms, resting his chin on her head. Madeleine hugged him back.
"I'm really sorry," said Madeleine who now felt quite guilty at making her brother worry.
"You're forgiven Little Leine." He pulled away and smiled. "Now get to bed." Madeleine saluted playfully before running upstairs.
Author's note: Another chapter down. Looks like things are getting serious with Madeleine and Clopin. The song I used is called perfect duet by Ed Sheeran and Beyonce. Thanks to everyone who has read this and special thanks to those that comment. I really appreciate the encouragement and it helps motivate me to keep on schedule with the chapters. Until next week!
Chapter 15: Notre Dame
Chapter Text
The day was cool and crisp. Autumn was beginning to creep up on the city of Paris. Clopin had increased the number of puppet shows he did in an attempt to get more money. There would be far less crowds once the weather became cold again.
Clopin had been especially busy lately. There was much to do when it came to organizing the Court and looking after his people. He had of course done some of it while his father was alive however, as the cooler months neared the pressure of his role as King grew heavier.
Madeleine had actually been very understanding about the situation and was always there for him if he needed to talk. She was the only person he trusted himself to be vulnerable around now.
Clopin had just finished counting the coins he had earned for his work today, when he heard a commotion, he looked over to see some guards harassing a gypsy family.
"Hey!" called Clopin drawing the guards attention.
"Why don't you nitwits pick on someone your own size? Or are Frollo's big bad guards just cowardly little bullies?"
The guards immediately rose to the bait and began to head towards Clopin who started to run as far as possible from the gypsy family. He knew he needed to stay in sight long enough to give the family time to run so he purposely allowed the guards to follow him.
After several minutes of darting in and out of alleys and the twisted streets of Paris the guards were catching up with him. Suddenly Clopin saw Notre Dame towering in front of him he increased his pace and skidded over the threshold calling,
"Sanctuary!" The guards stopped as they reached the steps of Notre Dame, cursing.
As Clopin moved further inside the church he looked around. He had never actually been in Notre Dame before. It was quite beautiful the windows were stained glass with various saints clopin couldn't identify. The colored glass cast rainbows on the floor. The ceiling was high and vaulted.
He turned to see the arch-deacon approaching.
"Can I help you my son?" he asked. Clopin was surprised by the kind tone the old man spoke in.
"I'm just seeking Sanctuary for the moment. I'll be gone soon," explained Clopin.
"Take your time, you are safe here," the arch-deacon said, patting Clopin on the shoulder before walking away.
Clopin was about to continue his exploration so to speak when he saw a familiar blond figure standing in front of some candles on an alter. Madeleine. He slowly approached her.
"Bonjour Clopin," she said turning to look at him as he approached. "I didn't realize you were the religious type."
"I'm not. The Cathedral just makes for a good hiding spot from Frollo's minions." Madeleine glanced back at the candles.
"So you don't believe in God?" she asked her tone was not accusatory. Simply curious.
"God's never done much for me or my people. If he's so just and wonderful why does he permit evil people like Frollo to be in power? Surely he should protect the innocent?"
"A fair point," agreed Madeleine looking pensive. "It does seem strange that he should allow such suffering yet I believe in him none the less."
"Has he ever answered your prayers?" asked Clopin skeptically.
"Yes," replied Madeleine with a smile. "I asked him to send me a good man who I could love and who would love me in return."
Clopin couldn't help but smile at her words.
"I'm glad he answered that prayer." Clopin looked at the candles and the long match in Madeleine's hand.
"What are you doing?" he asked stepping closer.
"Well I light a candle for each significant thing I pray for." Madeleine struck the match and placed in next to the wick of the first candle.
"One for my family, that they will remain safe and well," she lifted the match and placed it next to a second candle "One for your people that they may be delivered from the injustice they face," she moved to a third candle, "And one for the man I love. That the Lord will protect him and help him succeed in his duties when it comes to caring for others." She blew out the match and set it to the side.
Clopin was touched by her prayers. He could hear other people praying for status and riches yet Madeleine didn't even pray for herself. She prayed for those she loved. Clopin considered himself very lucky he was in that number.
Madeleine held out her hand for Clopin to take and she drew him next to her as she knelt.
"Would you care to join me? After all what's the worst that can happen?" she asked. Clopin paused thinking. He supposed she was right, he had nothing to lose if God didn't actually exist so one might as well try. He knelt next to her and copied her entwined fingers.
God, I don't know if you can actually hear me. Honestly, I can't say I'm certain you even are real. BUT Madeleine believes it so I suppose this can't hurt. My people need help. Every day they are treated unfairly and nobody seems willing to do anything about it. Please protect them and help me to lead them safely. Please deliver us from this prejudice. I can't stand to see my people in pain. And if you can't help them then please show me the way to do so. And thank you for sending Madeleine to me, if you are responsible for our meeting. I don't know what I would do without her.
HoND
Quasimodo looked down into the main area of the Cathedral. Strangely he saw the storyteller who's puppet cart was near Notre Dame. His Master always said gypsies were evil but Quasi hadn't ever seen anything bad about the story teller. Next to the storyteller was a blond woman Quasi recognized not only from coming here to church but also as having visited the storyteller quite often.
He looked down and saw the woman take the storyteller's hand in a gentle gesture. He wondered if they were together. The loving way they smiled at each other was beautiful. He wished someone would stare at him like that. Still thinking about the strange couple Quasi made his way back to the towers to ring the bells.
Author's note: So we finally meet Quasi! I know this got a bit religious but I liked the idea of comparing the two perspectives of Madeleine and Clopin. Thanks to all my readers and especially to those that have commented. PLEASE leave your thoughts in the comments if you like the story or even have some suggestions of things you'd like to see. Until next week!
Chapter 16: A Proposal
Chapter Text
Clopin made his way slightly nervously to the Clement's house. Of course, he had been there plenty of times before however, never for something as important as what was about to happen.
He had now known Madeleine for nearly two years and each time he saw her he fell more deeply in love with her. She was beautiful, uncommonly kind, selfless, and supportive. Clopin knew now that if he was going to marry any woman it would be her. First, however, he wanted to get Henri's permission. He knew Madeleine was out with Esmerelda and thus wouldn't be at home.
The Clement's house came into view and Clopin sped up his pace. He knocked on the door and a few moments later Henri answered it.
"Bonjour Clopin, can I help you?"
"Yes, I would like to ask you something." said Clopin still feeling anxious.
"Please, come in," gestured Henri and he led Clopin into the kitchen where they both sat at the table.
"I have a feeling I know where this is going but go a head and ask anyway," said Henri with a smile.
"As you know Madeleine and I have been seeing each other for quite some time."
"Yes, the blush on her cheeks every time she comes back from being out with you clued me in on that," Henri said with a wry smile.
"Yes, well, I'd like your permission to ask for her hand." Henri chuckled.
"I knew it."
"Well? Do I have your permission?"
"Possibly. But I need you to promise me something regarding her in return," replied Henri, tapping his fingers on his walking stick.
"Anything," Clopin told him eagerly.
"I've never had a problem with the fact that you are a gypsy however I can't pretend that that fact doesn't concern me given Frollo's treatment of your people which I'm afraid to say will probably continue until the miserable old bastard's death. I need you to promise me that you will do everything in your power to protect her from getting caught in the crossfire. She needs to be a priority for you."
"I swear to you on my father's grave that I will do everything I can to keep her safe. I love her to much to let anything happen to her. I'd rather lose my own life," Clopin told him earnestly. Henri smiled and patted his shoulder.
"Good. Then I'll be more than happy to call you my brother-in-law." Clopin also smiled and stood.
"Well, I'd better go ask her then. After all it is a bit of a moot point if she doesn't accept." Henri laughed.
"Believe me she'll accept." He escorted Clopin to the door. "Go get her." He said shaking Clopin's hand before closing the door. Clopin could not repress the grin on his face.
HoND
Clopin found Madeleine sitting on a fountain as she watched Esmerelda perform. It was nearing evening now but there were still a few people out who were willing to throw a coin or to into the hat at Esmerelda's feet. Clopin took a seat next to Madeleine who smiled at him.
"She really is amazing isn't she?" the blond told him in awe.
"Oh yes, she's certainly the best dancer in the Court," agreed Clopin.
"Esme told me you were busy today," Madeleine said raising an eyebrow at him.
"I was. But now I'm not. Which is why I'd like to get a word alone with you." Before Madeleine could reply there was a loud whistle signaling that guards were coming. Esmerelda grabbed the hat and ran with her goat at her heels.
Clopin took Madeleine's hand and pulled her down a side street. Trying to put as much distance between them and the guard. Finally they stopped running having reached the secluded bridge where they had had their first kiss. Both were slightly out of breath.
"Well, I'm getting quite used to that," said Madeleine matter of factly.
"Used to what?" asked Clopin.
"Running away from guards," she replied with a mischievous smirk. Clopin smiled at the look on her face. It seemed Esme's playfully devious nature was rubbing off on the young frenchwoman.
Madeleine was now looking down at the rushing water. Clopin approached her.
"There's something I'd like to ask you mon coeur," he said quietly.
"You can ask me anything Clopin," replied Madeleine whose face had now shifted into a gentle smile. Clopin took a deep breath.
"Madeleine Clement, ever since the day you rescued me you managed to capture my interest and not long after my heart. You mean the world to me and I want nothing more than to make you my wife and queen. Will you marry me?" Clopin got down on one knee and held out a simple ring with a moonstone in the center and a few diamonds along the thin gold band. It had belonged to his mother.
Madeleine clapped her hands to her mouth in shock.
"Oh Clopin! Yes. A thousand time yes!" Clopin slipped the ring onto her finger and the stood up taking her by the waist he picked her up and swung her around, kissing her more passionately than he had ever kissed any woman.
At last they had to pull apart for air.
"Happy?" he asked softly.
"Immeasurably," replied Madeleine whose smile was brighter than the sun.

Chapter 17: A Celebration
Chapter Text
Madeleine's heart beat quickly in her chest and happiness flooded her body as Clopin kissed her she looked down at the beautiful ring and then back up at Clopin. She felt tears of joy coming into her eyes.
"I've never felt so happy in my entire life," she said, a smile still on her face.
"Nor I mon coeur," replied Clopin whose face held equal joy. He glanced up at the rapidly darkening sky.
"I should get you home, but tomorrow I want to take you somewhere secret."
"Then I look forward to it," Madeleine told him happily. Clopin took her hand and led her through the backstreets of Paris back to her home.

Quasimodo looked out over Paris. There was a small bridge by Notre Dame that went over a river. On it he saw two familiar figures.
It was the gypsy storyteller and The Lady as he had come to call the pretty blond woman.
The Gypsy held something out to The Lady before picking her up and spinning her around as they kissed. Quasi couldn't help but smile at the happy couple. Even as he felt a sadness that he would never know that happiness.
So many times out here
I've watched a happy pair of lovers walking in the night
They had a kind of glow around them
It almost looked like heaven's light
I knew I’d never know
That warm and loving glow
Though I might wish with all my might
No face as hideous as my face was meant for heaven’s light.
He finished singing quietly to himself as he watched them walk away hand in hand. He hoped at least they would be happy.

When Madeleine entered her house she once again found Henri waiting for her. However, rather than disapproval he had a slightly smug but happy grin on his face.
"Well? How did it go?" Madeleine grinned back and held up her hand.
"I'm engaged!" she ran to Henri who pulled her into a tight hug.
"Congradulations Little Leine." They pulled apart.
"How did you know?" asked Madeleine who was pleased by her brother's reaction but also confused about his knowledge of the situation.
"Clopin came and asked me earlier if he could ask for your hand."
"Thank you for giving your permission," Madeleine told him softly.
"Your happiness is all I care about," her brother said as he smiled down at her.
HoND
Early in the evening on the following day Clopin stopped to pick up Madeleine up and grinned.
"Ready?" he asked. Madeleine nodded. She wore a dark red cloak over her purple dress to keep out the cold.
As they started off Madeleine turned to glanced at Clopin.
"So will you tell me where we are going?" Clopin flashed her a smile.
"Somewhere very special. I couldn't show you before for safety but now you are to be my wife it's only right you should know." Madeleine's eyes widened he must have been referring to the Court of Miracles. A place few people who weren't gypsies knew about.
Clopin eventually led her to an overgrown graveyard. He pushed aside the top of the monument, revealing a secret passageway leading below ground. He took her hand and helped her down the stairs. They landed in what appeared to be the sewers. There was dirty water that rose to the tops of Madeleine's feet and she was grateful she had worn boots that day.
"So this is where the Court of Miracles resides," she said looking around curiously.
"Yes, we've been successfully hiding here for decades now," Clopin told her as he took a torch off the wall and led the way forward still holding Madeleine's hand. They had been walking for several minutes when Madeleine thought she saw one of the skeletons move.
At that moment Clopin paused and called into the emtiness.
"It's alright boys she's with me." Madeleine gasped and jumped as the area was suddenly flooded with light, revealing several men dressed in skeleton costumes. One particularly large man stepped forward.
"So this is our future queen?" he asked smiling kindly at her.
"Madeleine this is Orfeus, one of my right hand men.
"I hope we didn't give you too much of a scare," the man called Orfeus said.
"Well, I can't deny you'll certainly scare your intruders," she said slightly shakily but managing a smile as her heart returned to it's regular pace.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet the woman who has captured the heart of our king," Orfeus said and several other gypsies nodded in agreement.
"Well, carry on gents," said Clopin. The men nodded and returned to their hiding places. Madeleine smiled at the clear mutual respect that was held between Clopin and his people. She knew he'd make a good king.
They continued walking till the passage opened up onto what looked like an underground city. Hundreds of tents in various colors were pitched around the open area and people walked too and fro. She had never seen so many gypsies. Cloth in various shades hung from the rock walls to make it more at home and she could see a high platform near the back wall.
"What do you think?" Clopin asked her.
"I think it's absolutely amazing!" she told him honestly.
"I'm glad you like it," he said as he began to lead her through the crowd.
People were beginning to gather near the high platform. Clopin led her up the steps so they were looking across the court. The whole time he kept his arm around Madeleine's waist. At last the crowd was gathered and he spoke.
"My dear people. For quite some time I have been told that I needed to find a bride. And I'm pleased to say that I've at last succeed in the endeavor. I'd like to introduce you all to my future wife and your future queen, Madeleine Clement!" Madeleine blushed as a great many people began cheering. Clopin raised his hand for quiet again and silence fell.
"In honor of this momentous occasion I propose we let the celebration BEGIN!" The people cheered even louder this time. Madeleine smiled. These were the people she hoped to help and soon she would become one of them.
Clopin led her back down off the platform.
"I'm glad they've accepted an outsider. I admit I was a bit worried," she whispered to Clopin who shrugged.
"You're already fairly well known by reputation at the Court due to a combination of your deeds helping our people, you and I have been seeing each other for a while, and Esmerelda's chattiness. Speaking of which...
He broke off as Esmerelda bounded up to the pair grinning from ear to ear and her goat hot on her heels,
"You two looked absolutely adorable together! Tante Gabrielle wanted me to tell you that the engagement feast is ready!"
"After you mon coeur," Clopin said in a gentelmanly manner and the two of them followed Esmerelda to where a huge feast had been laid.
The feast itself was marvelous. Madeleine was introduced to a variety of people, from the musicians Bartley and Danior to Clopin's Tante Gabrielle. She did her best to remember which name went with which face. The food itself was delicious. There were a plethora of fruits and vegetables along with some delightful lamb that melted in her mouth. She was careful not to drink to much wine.
When the dinner was finished instuments were brought out and people began dancing. Madeleine happily joined in the entertainment as a new song began.
Here in the twilight, under the moonlight
I feel your hungry eyes
Drums in the distance, echoes of madness
Around the firelight
In the heartbeat of the night
Hey, hey, hey, till the break of day
La lala lalalala lala lala lala
Hey, hey, hey, dance the whole night through
Nothing gets between
The dancer and the moon
Nothing gets between
The dancer and the moon
Follow me closely, arms wrapped around me
Life is a sweet, sweet wine
Glittering gold as stories unfold
Those secrets are lost in time
To the heartbeat of the night
Hey, hey, hey, till the break of day
La lala lalalala lala lala lala
Hey, hey, hey, dance the whole night through
Nothing gets between
The dancer and the moon
Hey, hey, hey, till the break of day
La lala lalalala lala lala lala
Hey, hey, hey, dance the whole night through
Nothing gets between
The dancer and the moon
Master of fate, how you captivate me
Filling my one desire
Two of a kind, with one state of mind
You’ve set my whole world on fire
In the heartbeat of the night
Hey, hey, hey, till the break of day
La lala lalalala lala lala lala
Hey, hey, hey, dance the whole night through
Nothing gets between
The dancer and the moon
Hey, hey, hey, till the break of day
La lala lalalala lala lala lala
Hey, hey, hey, dance the whole night through
Nothing gets between
The dancer and the moon
It was much livelier dancing than she was used to but she loved it nonetheless. In fact she was already growing to love the Court of Miracles and it's people.
Author's note: Phew! Here's two chapter in one week because I thought I had updated last week! Sorry! That was a long chapter to write. Hope you all enjoy it. Now we know where the title of the book comes from. The song quasi sings is part of Heavens Light and the end song is The Dancer and the Moon by Blackmores Night. I recommend looking up both. Please leave your thoughts in the comments. It means a lot. Until next week!
Chapter 18: Bad News
Chapter Text
The party with gypsies had gone well into the night. Madeleine, had returned very early the next morning. Exhausted but exhilarated. So, she wasn't surprised when she woke up to see that it was most likely nearly noon.
Madeleine dressed and headed down to the kitchen to get something to eat. Henri was at the table whittling something.
"Long night?" he asked cheekily.
"Like you wouldn't believe. But it was wonderful." Madeleine said with a smile.
"I'm glad to hear it. There's a letter for you from back home," Henri pushed a folded piece of paper towards her.
Curious Madeleine picked it up, expecting the regular news about what was happening back home. Her eyes widened as she read the letter when she finished she looked at Henri with shock.
"Father is sick," she told him. Henri looked up, startled.
"What?"
"It says here he's ill." Henri took the letter from her and read it for himself.
"This is terrible," he said softly.
"I need to go back. He'll need someone to care for him," Madeleine said feeling her heart sink.
"Of all the times for this to come," sighed Henri. Madeleine stood up and went to grab her cloak.
"I have to go tell Clopin," she said regretfully.
"What will you say?" asked Henri. Madeleine shook her head.
"I'm not sure."
HoND
Clopin was not at his puppet cart when Madeleine came to look for him however she did spot Esmerelda a street over. Madeleine approached her.
"Bonjour," said Esmerelda cheerfully.
"Bonjour," said Madeleine although she could not return the same level of cheerfullness. Seeing her grim face Esmerelda pulled them into an alley.
"Do you know where Clopin is?" asked Madeleine.
"Not exactly but I'm sure I can find him fairly quickly." Esmerelda said.
"Alright. Can you tell him to meet me at Sunset Hill at 4?" she asked. Esmerelda nodded.
"Yes, but what's wrong?"
"Something has happened that I need to speak to him about." Madeleine replied. Esmerelda gave her a worried look.
"I'll tell him. And you know you can always come to me if you need anything. We're practically sisters now," to Madeleine's surprise Esmerelda hugged her but s
"Thank you, Esme."
HoND
Madeleine paced back and forth. She had chosen this spot for it's seclusion and emotional significance. It was where they had first confessed their love.
She looked up to see Clopin approaching. He hurried to her.
"Esme told me you wanted to see me. Is everything alright?" he asked taking her hands.
"Not exactly," Madeleine said quietly. She took a deep breath and continued.
"My father is ill and I need to go home and look after him. And in light of that I thought it was best I return this." She took off the ring and made to press it into his hand. Confusion filled Clopin's face.
"I'm sorry for your father but I do not understand the need to break off the engagement. Do you no longer love me?" Madeleine placed her hands on his shoulders.
"Clopin, I love you more than life itself. I will always love you. But I do not know how long I will be away. You are the King now and soon you will need to start producing heirs. If this illness extends for a long time. I do not wish to keep you from being able to marry another. Or if you should come across someone you find suits you better." Madeleine felt tears enter her eyes and tried to blink them back. Clopin raised his hand to caress her face.
"Mon coeur, nobody is better suited to me than you. If I am to marry it will be you and only you. Therefore, I will wait however, long it takes for you to come back to me." He took the ring and returned it to her finger.
"You will?" whispered Madeleine.
"Of course," Clopin leaned in and kissed her. Madeleine wrapped her arms about his neck as his hands went to her waist.
They pulled apart for air and leaned their foreheads against each other.
"Distance cannot stifle our love." Clopin told her.
"Nothing will," Madeleine replied before kissing him again. In her mind she wondered how she could have been so lucky as to find Clopin. She knew he loved her but she never would have dreamed that anyone would be willing to wait for her. Internally she swore that come what may she would return to him. For now she would savor the feeling of his lips on hers.

Chapter 19: Letters
Chapter Text
Clopin looked up from finishing his puppet show to see Henri approach.
"Bonjour Monsieur Clement," said Clopin cheerfully. It had been a month since Madeleine had left and he was dearly missing his fiancée.
"Bonjour Clopin, another wonderful show," Henri replied placing some coins as well as a letter folded into a small tight square into the tin Clopin used for collecting money. This was how it had been agreed messages would be communicated between himself and Madeleine. Clopin grinned and bowed
"Merci Monsieur." Henri walked away and Clopin went inside the puppet caravan to read the letter. Opening it he saw Madeleine's loopy script
My Dearest Clopin,
Only a few weeks have passed yet I miss you more than ever. I arrived safely in Lorraine. Sadly, my father's illness seems to be worse than the letter conveyed. The doctors know of no cure for his illness. He is forced to stay in bed for the most part which doesn't exactly agree with him. It's strange being back in my quiet little village after the hustle and bustle of Paris. Luckily, I have my dear friend Belle to help keep things from getting boring. I hope you and everyone else back in Paris are well.
Love,
Madeleine
Clopin smiled at the letter and taking a piece of paper and a quill began to write his reply.
My Darling Madeleine,
I was quite glad to hear from you. I am sorry for your father's condition. Things are mostly the same here as when you left although the city is missing it's mostly lovely aspect. I'm glad to hear that this Belle is able to help keep you entertained while you are absent from the excitment of Paris. Everyone at court is well although Esmerelda dearly misses you (although not as much as I do mon coeur). It feels like an eternity since you left and I look forward to the day you return.
Love,
Clopin
HoND
Madeleine eagerly awaited the mail cart as usual. She'd received about a letter a month from Clopin and occasionally Esmerelda. She smiled hopefully as the cart pulled up. It had been four months since she returned and she was sorely missing her friends in Paris. Not that she resented looking after her father whose condition was sadly decreasing.
"Anything for me today?" she asked the man driving it.
"Why yes, two letters in fact," the driver said with a jolly smile as he handed her two white letters.
Madeleine looked them over and recognized the handwriting of Clopin and Esmerelda.
"Anything from your beau?" asked a voice behind her, and Madeleine turned to see her friend Belle standing at the house's fence.
"Yes, and one from his cousin." Belle smiled as she brushed a lock of brown hair back from her face.
"I'm glad, you clearly miss him. I honestly envy you having been to Paris. I'd love to get out of this little town."
"With Gaston chasing after you, I'm not surprised. Maybe when I go back you can join me."
"I'd like that," Belle replied. Suddenly a loud boastful voice was heard near the end of the street.
"Speak of the devil," muttered Madeleine.
"I'd better go," said Belle before running off. Madeleine also hurried inside. She no more wanted to see Gaston than Belle did.
Sitting down at the kitchen table she opened the letters. The first one from Clopin made her smile. He was romantic as he always was in their letters. The second was from Esmerelda.
Dear Madeleine,
Well, if I didn't already know Clopin was in love with you this absence confirms it. He's still moping about you being gone. A few women here have tried approaching him but he's rebuffed them all. You truly won his heart. Clopin has promised I'll get to perform at the Festival of Fools this coming year! I'm so excited. I've already started preparing my costume. I hope you are still doing well and I send my best wishes to your father.
Best,
Esmerelda
Madeleine took two sheets of paper and began writing
Dear Esme,
Congratulations on your dance! I don't know if I'll be back in time to see it but I'm sure you'll do a wonderful job. My father's health continues to decline although I think he has begun to come to terms with it. Not that it makes him much more cooperative. I've never doubted Clopin but I appreciate your update on him. If you need any tips about your costume please let me know. I'd be happy to sew something for you if you'd like to send it. I miss you my friend.
Best Wishes,
Madeleine then began the second letter.
My Dear Clopin,
I'm glad to hear from you again. Your letters are always the highlight of my day when I get them. Although I wish I could speak to you in person. I'm glad to hear things are going well at Court. Esmerelda seems happy about her dance at the Festival. I'm sure you are doing a wonderful job as King. I mostly spend my days looking after my father, sewing, or helping Belle avoid that oaf Gaston who doesn't seem to take no for an answer. I still miss Paris and hearing the ringing of the bells in Notre Dame. Their toll is truly the soul of the city. I look forward to the day that I can see you again but for now I shall content myself with your letters.
All My Love,
Madeleine
HoND
Madeleine sighed sadly as her father's coffin was lowered into the ground. Henri had his arm around her. It had been nearly a year since she had come home to look after her father. While she had been unable to cure him Madeleine was still glad she had come so that her father didn't die alone.
She had told him about Clopin and true to his kind and accepting nature that he had done his best to instill in his children Benedict Clement had simply been happy his daughter had found someone. He had even given her his blessing.
Madeleine threw a handful of dirt onto the coffin like the other mourners and dried her eyes with a white handkerchief. She would dearly miss her father. Although at least she hadn't lost him the way Clopin lost his father.
Once the funeral was over Madeleine and Henri returned to their father's house to sort the remainder of his things. They weren't poor so to speak but they also hadn't exactly been rich. Madeleine's heart was heavy after losing her father and the only thing that lightened it was the knowledge that in a few days time she would be returning to Paris and able to see Clopin again.
Author's Note: Well, there's this weeks chapter! I decided to include Belle due to the little cameo she makes in the opening of Hunchback. Next week we'll be heading into the events of the movie so stay tuned for the next chapter. Until next time!
Chapter 20: Return and Beginning
Chapter Text
Morning in Paris, the city awakes
To the bells of Notre Dame
The fisherman fishes, the baker man bakes
To the bells of Notre Dame
To the big bells as loud as the thunder
To the little bells soft as a psalm
And some say the soul of the city's
The toll of the bells
The bells of Notre Dame
Clopin sung cheerfully as the sun shone down brightly. Madeleine smiled as she watched noting that he had incorporated her words about the bells being the soul of city into his song. He caught her eye and she saw his eyes widen a fraction before quickly returning to entertaining his audience.
"Listen, they're beautiful no? So many colors of sound so many changing moods. Because you know they do not ring all by themselves."
Clopin now pulled out Cloppet and Madeleine grinned at the sight of the little puppet.
"They don't?" asked the puppet.
"No silly boy," scolded Clopin. "Up there high, high, in the dark bell tower lives a mysterious bell ringer. Who is this stranger creature
"Who?" asked Cloppet.
"What is he?" asked Clopin.
"What?" squeaked Cloppet.
"How did he come to be there?"
"How?"
"Hush," said Clopin bopping the puppet on the head with his stick. "And Clopin will tell you. It is the tale of a man and a monster."
Dark was the night when our tale was begun
On the docks near Notre Dame
Four frightened gypsies slid silently under the docks near Notre Dame
But a trap had been laid for the gypsies. And they stared up in fear and alarm. At a figure who's clutches were iron as much as the bells. The bells of Notre Dame.
Clopin's voice became darker as he spoke of the man that tormented his people.
Judge Claude Frollo longed to purge the world of vice and sin. And he saw corruption everywhere except within.
Madeleine couldn't help but gasp as Clopin described the chase and the subsequent death of the child's mother at Frollo's hands.
"Stop! Cried the Archdeacon" Clopin said now taking on the familiar voice of the Archdeacon and alternating it with a perfect replica of the chilling voice of Frollo
See there the inncoent blood you have spilt
On the steps of Notre Dame
I am guiltless, she ran, I pursued
Now you would add this child's blood to your guilt
On the steps of Notre Dame
My conscience is clear
You can lie to yourself and your minions
You can claim that you haven't a qualm
But you never can, run from nor hide what you've done from the eyes
The very eyes of Notre Dame
And for one time in his life of power and control
Frollo felt a twinge of fear
For his immortal soul
What must I do?
Care for the child, and raise it as your own
What? I'm to be settled with this misshapen
Very well, let him live with you and your church
Live here? Where?
Anywhere
Just so he's kept locked away where no one else can see
The bell tower perhaps
And who knows, our Lord works in mysterious ways
Even this foul creature may
Yet prove one day to be
Of use to me
Now Clopin returned to his own voice pulling out a puppet of Frollo and the bellringer showing the bellringer growing up as they went up the stairs.
"And Frollo gave the child a cruel name. A name that means half-formed. Quasimodo."
Now here is a riddle to guess if you can
Sing the bells of Notre Dame
Who is the monster and who is the man?
Sing the bells bells bells bells bells bells bells bells
Bells of Notre Dame!!!!
As Clopin sang the finishing lines of the song the actual bells of Notre Dame rang out melding with his voice.
The performance was followed by applause during which Madeleine slipped away from her seat on the fountain and into the puppet caravan. A moment later the door to the caravan opened and Clopin entered. He quickly closed the door and swept Madeleine into his arms kissing her passionately. Madeleine returned the kiss with the same enthusiasm. God she had missed him.
Finally the pair was forced to pull apart for air.
"I've missed you mon coeur," he said softly. Madeleine smiled back.
"And I you mon amour."
"Why didn't you say in your last letter you were going to be coming back today?" inquired Clopin sitting down and pulling her into his lap.
"I wanted to surprise you," replied Madeleine with a shrug.
"You certainly succeeded," Clopin told her with a mischievous grin.
"I'm glad to hear it," Madeleine told him as she stroked his cheek.
"Well, at least you are back in time for the Festival of Fools!" said Clopin cheerfully.
"Of course! You don't think I'd miss the opportunity to see you perform on the one day Frollo can't punish you for merely existing!" Madeleine's tone was humorous however, the ending part held a note of severity.
"True, I am rather impossible to miss!" Clopin said.
"How do you know that story about the bellringer?" asked Madeleine. Everyone knew about the bellringer's existence but none had seen him.
"My father and I were supposed to meet those gypsies. But Frollo caught word. We tried to follow but were unable to help the woman in time. I regret that we could not have done more for the child."
"It wasn't your fault. Although I feel terrible for the boy. Growing up with a guardian like Frollo. Who knows what nonsense the shriveled old fool has been filling his mind with!" exclaimed Madeleine.
"It is a shame," agreed Clopin. They rested their foreheads against each other for a while. At last Madeleine said,
"You should get going on preparations for the festival."
"Or alternatively we could stay here," said Clopin burying his head in her hair. Madeleine giggled but pulled away.
"We'll have time for that later." She stood.
"Then I'll see you at the festival," Clopin said, also standing.
"We'll all be in masks, how will you know which one I am?" asked Madeleine.
"Simple," Clopin said as he took her by the waist and pulled her close. "I'll look for the most beautiful woman in the crowd." Madeleine blushed looking down.
"If you says so." Clopin tilted her chin up and gave her a brief and gentle kiss.
"I do." They shared as smile and Madeleine left.
HoND
Madeleine made her way down the streets feeling exceptionally pleased. It was wonderful to see Clopin again and their separation had only made her love grow tenfold.
Up ahead she heard music and turned a corner to see Esmerelda dancing with her goat.
Madeleine paused and clapped along. Esmerelda shot her a grin. Nearby a blond man in a blue cloak, leading a horse also stopped and stared appreciatively at Esmerelda whose dancing had only improved since the last time Madeleine had seen her.
Suddenly a whistle rang out which Madeleine knew to be the signal the gypsies used for approaching guards. Sure enough to ran around the corner. Esmerelda's goat grabbed the hat of money but it went flying. Madeleine saw Esmerelda run back to get the money only to be grabbed by guards.
As they interrogated her Madeleine made to step forward but a look from Esmerelda stopped her. Suddenly Esmerelda kicked her guard while the other was given a head but by Esmerelda's goat. The two ran away.
Once again Madeleine made to hinder the guards but the man in the cloak beat her to it. The man moved his horse right in front of the two guards who both tripped.
"Achilles sit," said the man to the horse and the horse dutifully sat on one of the guards. Madeleine giggled.
"Naughty horse!" scolded the man before turning to the guards but making no attempt to make his horse rise up.
"So sorry, can't take him anywhere." Slowly Madeleine began collecting the coins that had been dropped.
"I'll teach you to meddle peasant!" said the guard not trapped under the horse. The man seemed unconcerned as he swept aside his cloak revealing golden armor and a gold sword which he pointed at the guard.
"You were saying lieutenant?" he asked.
Madeleine grinned at the guard's stupefied expression before taking the gold and walking a few blocks away where she saw a familiar beggar like figure crouching on the side. She stepped by and dropped the hat of gold by the beggar.
"Close one Esme," she whispered. Esmerelda poked her head out from the cloak.
"Don't tell Clopin, he's gotten more protective than ever this past year." Madeleine nodded.
"Your secret is safe with me. Will the dress I made you work for the show?" she asked. Esmerelda nodded.
"Yes, thank you so much!"
"It's my pleasure," said Madeleine waving away the woman's thanks. "I'll see you at the festival!"
And with a final wave Madeleine set off back home to prepare get into her outfit for the revelry.
Author's Note: So we're starting on the movie now. Again all characters and plot elements belong to Victor Hugo and Disney. Please leave your thoughts on the story in the comments below. Apologies for any formatting issues. Until next week!
Chapter 21: The Festival Fiasco
Chapter Text
Come one, come all
Leave your loops and milking stools
Coop the hens and pen the mules
Come one, come all
Close the churches and the schools
It's the day for breaking rules
Come and join the feast of
Fools!
Clopin grinned as he slid out from between the dark robed figures and the festival began. Oh how he loved this day. Seeing a cloaked figure trying to avoid being seen Clopin grabbed him and tried to pull him into the fun.
Clopin continued capering around the crowd as he sang keeping an eye out for Madeleine as he performed his acrobatic tricks. Finally he spotted her in the crowd wearing a black and white dress and mask with elbow length gloves, one white one black.
Topsy turvy!
Everything is upsy daysy
Topsy turvy
Everyone is acting crazy
Dross is gold and and weeds are a bouquet
That's the way on topsy turvy day
He handed Madeleine a picking of dandilions and other weeds causing her to laugh as he winked at her.
Topsy turvy
Beat the drums and blow the trumpets
Topsy turvy
Join the bums and thieves and strumpets
Streaming in from Chartres to Calais
Scurvy knaves are extra scurvy
On the sixth of January
All because it's topsy turvy day
Clopin jumped up on the stage that had been set up holding a smoke bomb in his fist.
Come one, come all
Hurry, hurry here's your chance
See the mystery and romance
Come one, come all
See the finest girl in France
Make an entrance to entrance
Dance, la Esmeralda
Dance!
He dropped the smoke bomb and used the distraction to get out of the way so Esmerelda could replace him. He then moved so he was right behind Madeleine as they watched Esmerelda dance.
"So you found me," she said with a grin.
"I told you I'd look for the prettiest girl in France."
"And here I thought that was Esmerelda," joked Madeleine.
"Not in my eyes," Clopin whispered in her ear. He winced as he saw Esmerelda tease Frollo. That girl was playing with fire and he didn't like the lustful look Frollo gave her. But now it was time for the king of fools. Clopin leapt back on the stage as Esmerelda finished.
Here it is, the moment you've been waiting for
Here it is, you know exactly what's in store
Now's the time we laugh until our sides get sore
Now's the time we crown the King of Fools
You all remember last year's king?
So make a face that's horrible and frightening
Make a face as gruesome as a gargoyle's wing
For the face that's ugliest will be the King of Fools
Why?
Topsy turvy!
Ugly folks, forget your shyness
Topsy turvy!
You could soon be called Your Highness
Put your foulest features on display
Be the king of topsy turvy day
One by one masks were pulled off the contestants for the King of Fools until they reached the cloaked figure on the end but when Esmerelda tried to remove the mask to his horror Clopin realized it was actually the deformed bellringer. As people began to cry out Clopin thought fast before jumping to the bellringer's side.
"Ladies and gentlemen! Don't panic! We asked for the ugliest face in France and here it is! Quasimodo the hunchback of Notre Dame!" Clopin placed a crown on Quasimodo's head and the crowd immediately swarmed him and put Quasi on their shoulders as Clopin led the parade.
Everybody!
Once a year we throw a party here in town
Hail to the king
Once a year we turn all Paris upside down
Oh, what a king!
Once a year the ugliest will wear a crown
Girls, give a kiss!
Once a year on topsy turvy day
We've never had a king like this
And it's the day we do the things that we deplore
On the other three hundred and sixty-four
Once a year we love to drop in
Where the beer is never stoppin'
For the chance to pop some popinjay
And pick a king who'll put the top
In Topsy Turvy
Topsy turvy
Mad and crazy, upsy daysy, Topsy Turvy Day!
Quasimodo was put on a platform as people cheered and threw confetti. Clopin returned to Madeleine's side and she smiled at him.
"Thank you for doing that," she told him.
"Well, the poor fellow deserves some fun," replied Clopin as he joined in the cheering. That was when things went horribly wrong. Someone threw a tomato at Quasimodo and the cheering turned to jeering as people called him names and threw rotten fruit. Ropes were thrown on him to tie him down and the platform he was on was spun in circles.
Clopin was at a loss at what to do. He hated to see cruelty like this but if he interfered it could put his people in danger. Before he could do anything he saw that Esmerelda had jumped up to the platform and groaned internally. Now things really were going to hell. He noticed Madeleine trying to move forward to help Esmerelda and he held her back.
"Let me go!"
"Esmerelda's already in trouble you don't need to draw Frollo's attention too," hissed Clopin.
"You gypsy girl! Get down!" Frollo called to Esmerelda.
"Yes your honor! Just as soon as I free this poor creature!" Esmerelda called.
"I forbid it!" Frollo yelled but Esmerelda ignored him. Clopin watched as she cut the ropes holding Quasimodo.
"How dare you defy me!" Esmerelda turned to look at Frollo and Clopin saw a mixture of distain and bravery on her face.
"You mistreat this boy just as you mistreat my people! You speak of justice yet you are cruel to those who are most in need of your help!
"Silence!" bellowed Frollo.
"Justice!" called Esmerelda.
"Mark my words gypsy, you will pay for this," Frollo threatened.
"Then it appears we crowned the wrong fool," said Esmerelda with bow. She grabbed the crown on Quasimodo and threw it at Frollo's feet.
"The only fool I see is you!" Clopin was torn between fear for Esmerelda and his people, exasperation at her actions, and pride.
"Arrest her!" Frollo ordered. The guards moved in and Esmerelda used another smoke bomb to disappear before being carried away by the crowd. Chaos erupted.
"Meet me at the Court!" Clopin told Madeleine who nodded. With that Clopin hurried off to round up his people and get them to safety.
HoND
Madeleine pushed through the crowd looking for Quasimodo. The poor boy hadn't done anything wrong and they had humiliated him. If she didn't already hate the city guards this would have made her do so.
She suddenly saw a hunched figure in an alley. It backed away as she approached and she stopped.
"It's alright, I'm not going to hurt you Quasi," she said gently as she removed her mask.
"May I come closer?" she asked softly.
"Why would you want to?" asked Quasi and Madeleine was immediately reminded of her first meeting with Clopin.
"Because you didn't deserve to be treated like that. What they did was horrible," she told him approaching gently and removing Quasi's hand's which covered his face. "There, not so terrifying after all."
"I have to get back to the Cathedral, but I don't want any more people seeing me," said Quasi and Madeleine smiled.
"I can help with that. I've had my fair share of time spent navigating back alleys. Follow me," she led the way through the series of alleys. After a while Quasi spoke.
"You’re the woman who's in love with the storyteller." It took Madeleine a moment to realize who he meant.
"Oh, you mean Clopin."
"Yes, why did he have to pull me up there? I suppose he got the spectacle he wanted," said Quasi.
"I can assure Clopin meant no harm. I believe that he didn't realize who you were until the unmasking and likely hoped that on a day when people tend to be more accepting, that you would be treated with kindness."
"Well, I suppose it doesn't matter, my Master was right. The world is cruel and will never accept a hideous monster like me."
"Now that's enough of that Quasimodo. You are NOT a monster. Whatever that fool Frollo says. You really shouldn't listen to him."
"But my Master is always right and he's always protected me, besides you saw how the crowd reacted." Quasi protested.
"No, Frollo is not always right if ever and he shouldn't be filling your head with such cruel nonsense. Anyway, just because people say something doesn't make it true. For instance, as you so rightly said I am in love with Clopin. However, we are forced to hide it for our own safety. Your Master would have Clopin and I killed if he found out. And if society knew, the crowds would likely call me a wicked whore and a harlot."
"But you aren't," said Quasimodo in confusion.
"Precisely, my point. People might say that but it doesn't make it true. Likewise just because your Master says that you are a monster doesn't make it true," she turned to face him as they reached the side of Notre Dame.
"We aren't defined by how we look on the outside. But what lies within. Sometimes the handsomest man can be the cruelest and sometimes the ugliest one is the kindest," she stroked Quasi's cheek. "The world isn't as black and white as you might think," she said gesturing to her outfit with a wry smile.
"I can see you have a kind and pure heart. Which makes you the opposite of a monster. Don't believe everything Frollo tells you, especially when it's about yourself."
"But what about the crowds. They were as cruel as my Master said," Quasi asked. Madeleine sighed.
"I won't deny that the society can be rather superficial. Crowds tend to follow a herd mentality. Going with whatever sentiment occurs at the time. But it doesn't mean that every individual in the world believes the same thing. Tell me, before everything went wrong, were you happy?"
"Yes, I've never felt so excited and joyful in my life!"
"Well then hold onto that memory and think about what I said," Madeleine told him as she kissed his forehead. Quasi looked up at her in wonder.
"Thank you, Miss?"
"Madeleine. Madeleine Clement," she told him with a smile. "Who knows maybe next time I'm in Notre Dame I'll stop by the bell tower.
"I'd like that very much," Quasimodo told her and Madeleine felt her heart warm. He really was a sweet boy.
"Goodbye," she said waving her hand.
"Goodbye," replied Quasi before climbing up the side of Notre Dame.

Chapter 22: Arguments and Promises
Chapter Text
Madeleine was quick to run home and change clothes and briefly inform Henri about what happened.
Now she made her way towards the graveyard entrance to the Court of Miracles, constantly checking that she wasn't being followed.
Finally she reached the graveyard and with some difficulty pushed aside the top of the monument revealing a set of stairs. Madeleine climbed down and pulled the top shut behind her.
She then took out a box of matches and a candle out of her cloak and lit it recalling how dark the catacombs could be. Slowly she made her way through the wet tunnels waiting for the moment the guards would appear.
Madeleine had been walking for about ten minutes when her candle went out and she felt a blade against her throat. She froze.
"Well, well, what do we have here? A little mouse come to play," said an unfamiliar sinister voice. Suddenly the lights came on in the cavern revealing the many gypsies in skeleton costumes.
Suddenly one of the skeleton's scoffed and pulled off his mask. To her relief Madeleine recognized Orfeus.
"Let her go Harlan you moron. That's not a spy it's our king's fiancee," she felt the blade retract from her throat quickly.
"My apologies. Harlan is rather new," said Orfeus.
"Perfectly understandable given recent events," said Madeleine calmly brushing it aside. "Could one of you take me the rest of the way to the Court?"
"I'll do it," said Orfeus and he led her deeper down the passageway. "I have to admit I'm glad you're here. Clopin's been very anxious. Esmerelda isn't back yet."
"Oh dear, I hope she's alright. She seems to have really angered Frollo."
"I know," replied Orfeus. They reached the Court with it's many tents. "You know the way to his tent?" he asked. Madeleine nodded.
"Thank you Orfeus." The gyspy nodded and headed back down the tunnel. Madeleine quickly made her way to a large red and gold tent she knew to be Clopin's. She pushed aside the entrance flap and found Clopin pacing anxiously. He looked up as she came in and relief flooded his face. He ran to her and pulled her into his arms.
"Thank heavens you're safe," he said. After a moment they pulled apart.
"Well, I'm not exactly his prime target. Speaking of which Orfeus said Esmerelda isn't back yet," said Madeleine in concern. Clopin sighed and began his pacing again.
"No, she hasn't returned. The last I heard she claimed sanctuary in Notre Dame but I know she won't stay there. Gypsies don't do well inside stone walls and Frollo will have posted guards at every entrance."
"Esmerelda's a smart girl. She can take care of herself," Madeleine said in an attempt to comfort him.
"She should never have teased Frollo and then openly defied him. She's practically declared war!"
"She thought she was doing the right thing."
"I know but..." Clopin was cut off as Esmerelda entered the tent. Clopin put his hands on his hips.
"Well, well, well, look who decided to turn up."
"I know you're angry Clopin but..." began Esmerelda apologetically but Clopin cut her off.
"I hope you're satisfied. Your little stunt has just put the entire Court in danger!"
"Frollo was going after us before I stood up to him!" argued Esmerelda.
"Yes, but you have simply exacerbated that now that he has a specific target! You just had to interfere didn't you!?" shouted Clopin.
"I was doing the right thing! That poor boy didn't deserve such foul treatment! How are we any better than Frollo if we don't help others who are in a similar position?"
"Need I remind you that you were the one that pulled him on stage? I'm sorry for the hunchback but we need to put our own safety first. He is one person, I have to protect hundreds including women and children and my own cousin goes and aggravates Frollo!"
"I won't stand by while others are hurt! It's time someone stood up to Frollo. We can't spend the rest of our lives cowering in the shadows 364 days of the year!" yelled Esmerelda. Clopin clapped his hands sarcastically.
"Ah yes, I suppose you want to go to war against him? When he has hundreds of guards at his disposal? We would be massacred Esmerelda! Now go to your tent and stay there where you can't get into any more trouble." Esmerelda glared at Clopin and turned on her heel leaving the tent. Clopin groaned.
"That girl. I'm just..." he broke off seemingly lost for words. Madeleine who had watched the explosive exchange placed her hand on his shoulder.
"You're conflicted. You're proud of her for doing the right thing morally, but you are also worried about the consequences and how you will now protect your people." Clopin closed his eyes.
"Precisely." He opened them and looked at her.
"How do you always know what to say?" Madeleine shrugged.
"Intuition. I believe in you Clopin. You will find a way out of this."
"I wish I had your confidence," Clopin told her with a wry smile.
"Well, its a good thing I have enough for both of us," Madeleine told him before leaning up to give him a kiss.
"Would you like to go for a walk?" Clopin asked.
"Outside? Are you sure?" asked Madeleine.
"I know a place," Clopin replied with a grin.
HoND
Clopin led Madeleine up a ladder and onto the roof tops of Paris. There was a section where the roofs were all flat and close together. He doubted the guards would be looking up. They walked along hand in hand and Clopin brought himself to ask the question that had been worrying him since the events of the festival.
"Do you still wish to get married?" He asked her. She looked surprised.
"Why wouldn't I?" Clopin shrugged.
"Things have gotten far more dangerous now. I didn't know if you still wanted to deal with that. It's going to make things more difficult." Madeleine turned to face him.
"There is nobody in the world I would rather have as my husband." She stepped away and began to sing.
Some people long for a life that is simple and planned
Tied with a ribbon
Some people won't sail the sea 'cause they're safer on land
To follow what's written
But I'd follow you to the great unknown
Off to a world we call our own
She took his hands one at a time and pulled him into a dance.
Hand in my hand
And we promised to never let go
We're walking a tightrope
High in the sky
We can see the whole world down below
We're walking a tightrope
She ran to the edge of the roof balancing on one leg so his hand was all that supported her.
Never sure, never know how far we could fall
He spun her back in and they continued their dance as she sang
But it's all an adventure
That comes with a breathtaking view
Walking a tightrope
With you, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
With you, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
With you
Clopin stepped away and began to sing as he looked at her.
Mountains and valleys, and all that will come in between
Desert and ocean
He pulled her to him his hands on her waist.
You pulled me in and together we're lost in a dream
Always in motion
So I risk it all just to be with you
And I risk it all for this life we choose
Her sweet soprano began to join his tenor for the next lines as they grabbed hands and leapt the small gap between the rooftops before continuing the dance.
Hand in my hand
And you promised to never let go
We're walking a tightrope
High in the sky
We can see the whole world down below
We're walking a tightrope
Never sure, will you catch me if I should fall?
He lifted her up in the air before letting go and catching her bridal style.
Well, it's all an adventure
That comes with a breathtaking view
Walking a tightrope
She stroked his cheek before he let her down to finish their waltz.
With you, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
With you
With you, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
With you, ooh, ooh, ooh
He spun her out and pulled her back in so their faces were close together as they sang the final line.
With you

Chapter 23: Kindness and Danger
Chapter Text
Quasimodo looked out over the city. Thinking of his time with Esmerelda.
*flashback*
"Maybe Frollo's wrong about both of us."
"That like what Madeleine told me," he said. Esmerelda laughed.
"That sounds like her. My cousin chose his queen well. You would be wise to listen to to her."
*End of Flashback*
Could Esmerelda and Madeleine be right? Suddenly out on the rooftops he saw two familiar figures dancing. It was Madeleine and Clopin. He sighed and began to sing softly to himself.
So many times out here
I've watched a happy pair of lovers walking in the night
They had a kind of glow around them
It almost looked like heaven's light
I knew I'd never know that warm and loving glow
Though I might wish with all my might
No face as hideous as my face
Was ever meant for heaven's light
He wasn't sure who was right. His Master, or the two women who had shown him such kindness earlier. Still conflicted he saw Madeleine and Clopin disappear into the night.
HoND
Carefully Madeleine and Clopin made their way back through the streets still holding hands suddenly Clopin heard the sound of a boot crushing a twig. He froze and by the way Madeleine stiffened he knew she had heard it too. Surprisingly no cry of pursuit rang out.
"You know, it's impolite to follow people without their consent," he quipped as the two of them slowly turned round to find a very awkward looking Captain Phoebus.
"Good grief has Frollo made it a crime to take a walk now?" said Madeleine and Clopin was pleased to see the surprise on the Captain's face as she removed her hood, revealing her golden blond hair and blue eyes. The opposite of a gypsy's complexion.
"I wouldn't be surprised. We could accept a birthday present and Frollo would say we stole it. Come on what’s the trumped up charge this time?" Clopin said derisively. The Captain looked confused and Clopin noted he had still made no move of aggression.
"I'm not going to arrest you. Why would I?" It was Madeleine Clopin's turn to be surprised.
"Most guards would not need a reason at least in regards to myself," Clopin told him.
"I mean Frollo seems to hate you all but I don't see why you should be arrested if you aren't doing anything illegal," said Phoebus.
"An honorable guard. What an oddity," commented Madeleine looking thoughtful.
"Then why were you following us?" asked Clopin shrewdly immediately on his guard.
"It's about that gypsy girl, Esmerelda. I told her to take sanctuary in Notre Dame but she's escaped and I just wanted to know if she made it safely back to her people."
"Why would you care?" asked Madeleine in a curious tone. The Captain shrugged.
"She did what nobody else, including myself, had the courage to do." Clopin exchanged a glance with Madeleine who gave him an encouraging look. Clopin sighed.
"Yes, Captain, she made it back safely." A look of relief crossed Phoebus’s face.
"Well then, I'll bid you goodnight. Mind you I'd be extra careful. Frollo is not at all happy about her escape." He turned to depart but paused as Madeleine spoke.
"If you stick by what you say regarding doing what's right then you may just turn out to be the best Captain of the guard this city has seen in a long time."
"I'll do my best." Once he was out of sight Madeleine and Clopin continued to head back towards Madeleine's house.
"He reminds me of me when I first met you. I was so idealistic." Clopin chuckled.
"You still are somewhat mon coeur. But I'm not sure how much of a difference one Captain can make."
"We'll just have to see," said Madeleine as they reached the path that would lead her to her house.
"If Frollo is out for blood you're safer if I leave you here. We'll have to go underground for now. If things look deadly I want you to bring your brother to the Court to hide with us. The same goes for Byron, the Miller's family, and anyone else in the group.
"Alright." Clopin could see the worry in Madeleine's eyes. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her.
"Stay safe, won't you?" whispered Madeleine.
"I promise," said Clopin. They held hands for a moment more before finally turning to go their separate ways.
HoND
Things did NOT calm down after a few days as Madeleine had hoped. Something about Esmerelda seemed to have infuriated Frollo more than usual and he was even more ferocious in his raids for the gypsies.
Madeleine and Henri had little choice but to stay in their house to wait out the storm. Smoke filled the sky as Paris began to burn.
"Do you think we should try and make for the Court?" Madeleine asked Henri one day.
"I don't know. I think it might be too big of a risk to the Court. What if someone follows us?"
"I'm so worried for everyone in Paris at this point. There have been more executions in the last week then there were in the past six months!" said Madeleine wringing her hands nervously.
"There's no doubt Frollo has gone insane," agreed Henri. Madeleine went upstairs to grab some sewing that she had left in Henri's room on accident. Looking out the window she had to stop herself from screaming she could see a brigade of guards carrying torches at the head of the crowd was Frollo heading their way.
Racing downstairs Madeleine rushed to Henri.
"We have to go Frollo is coming!" she said urgently. Henri stood up and looked out the window.
"They're nearly here. Grab your cloak and make for the woods behind the house then when you are sure it's safe head for the Court!"
"What about you?" asked Madeleine as she pulled on her cloak and gloves.
"I can't run I'll only slow you down and get caught," said Henri. "I'll distract them."
"What! No!" exclaimed Madeleine in terror.
"There is no time to argue!" ordered Henri. "I love you too much to let you die, now GO!" He hugged her before pushing her towards the door. Tears in her eyes Madeleine went out the back heading for the cover of the trees.

Chapter 24: Death and Remembrance
Chapter Text
Henri limped outside of the house to face Frollo. He needed to buy his sister time. Frollo seemed to have decided to go for the most dramatic situation possible having brought a host of armed guards to capture two people. Henri looked up at Frollo who sat on his great black horse.
"How can I help you Minister?" he asked in a mock polite tone. Frollo glared down at him evilly.
"Henri Clement, you and your sister are charged with harboring gypsies and assisting them in escaping justice." Henri scoffed.
"Justice? Is that what you call persecuting innocent people? I think you need to double check the dictionary if you think that is the definition of justice." Frollo's face remained angry as he dismounted.
"Where is your sister and how do you plead?" he demanded. Now Henri knew was the time for his deception.
"My sister is ill and unable to leave her bed. As to how I plead?" Henri smirked. "Guilty on all counts and proud of it."
"You confess," asked Frollo who seemed surprised at how easily Henri gave in.
"Oh yes, I've spent years helping dozens of gypsies escape your evil clutches. Most of Paris may be willing to allow you to harm innocents but I certainly won't. You may call yourself a Minister of Justice but in reality we all know you are nothing more than a pathetic, bigoted, fanatic who also seems to have now gone insane." Henri spat in Frollo's face. The man stumbled back his face contorting in rage.
"You will pay for that Tinker! Arrest him and set fire to the house. The girl can burn!" To guards attempted to arrest Henri who struggled managing to knock out two of them before being over whelmed and forced to his knees. He made sure to put up a good show of trying to get back to the house as the guards set it on fire. With any luck Madeleine could get to Clopin and Frollo would believe her dead.
Frollo approached him now sword in hand.
"Any last words traitor?" the older man asked. Henri glared at him.
"Go to hell!"
HoND
Madeleine watched things unfold in front of her house from the cover of the trees. She heard shouting and saw her brother forced to his knees.
She covered her mouth to stifle the gasp that emerged as Frollo's sword fell on Henri's neck. Tears began to fall down her face as she forced herself to look away and flee.
She ran through the forest heading to the graveyard that led to the Court of Miracles. She felt numb inside not entirely sure how to process what had just happened. All she knew was that she needed to get to Clopin.
She burst into the tunnels water splashing as she ran. In the dark she felt someone catch her. The lights came up and she found Orfeus holding her looking concerned.
"Mademoiselle Clement! What's wrong?" he asked.
"Please, just take me to Clopin," she gasped. Orfeus took her by the arm and led her to the Court. People stared at her as they passed and she pushed her way into Clopin's tent without knocking. Clopin stood with several other gypsies staring at a map on a table. He looked up in alarm as she burst in and threw herself into his arms sobbing.
"Merdi Madeleine! What's wrong?" he asked. She buried her head in his shoulder and sobbed unable to speak Clopin pulled her over to the edge of his bed where he sat down and pulled her into his lap. He rocked her slightly while he hummed softly allowing her to cry freely.
Madeleine cried for what felt like hours. Or perhaps it was only a few minutes. At the last she managed to hiccup herself into silence. Clopin stroked her cheek.
"What happened mon coeur?" he asked softly.
"Henri...he...he's dead," she said shakily.
"What? What happened?" said Clopin in surprise.
"Fr...Frollo. He came to our house to arrest us for helping you. Henri told me to run and then went out to face him," Madeleine bit her lip. Each word she spoke felt like a dagger was being stabbed into her chest. "I ran to the woods and watched as he stalled them. Then...Then Frollo beheaded him."
"Oh mon amore," Clopin whispered as he stroked her hair. "I'm so so sorry." Madeleine hugged him.
"I shouldn't have left him. I should have forced him to come with me!" whispered Madeleine. Clopin shoook his head and tilted her chin to look at him.
"You never would have gotten away. Frollo would have caught both of you. Henri knew that. He was a brave man and he wanted to keep you safe. Do not feel guilty. Frollo is the only one at fault here."
Madeleine knew that Clopin spoke the truth, but it didn't make her feel any better. She clung to him.
"Please don't leave me too. You're all that I have left. If Frollo got you..."
"Ssh. He won't. I won't leave you. I promise." Clopin told her soothingly. Deep down Madeleine knew that wasn't a promise he could be certain of keeping but she prayed to God all the same that what Clopin said would come true. That Frollo wouldn't take away the only person she had left.
HoND
Clopin had been shocked by the news of Henri's death. He completely understood Madeleine's distraught state having lost a family member to Frollo himself. He allowed her to cry and let her emotions out just as she had allowed him to the night his father was hung.
After she had calmed down he set about organizing a feast to remember Henri that night. The man deserved to be honored after all he had done for the gypsies.
When dinner time arrived everyone gathered together. Clopin guided Madeleine to sit at his side. She hadn't spoken much since her arrival but had done her best to stick to close to him. Clopin knew it wasn't out of fear of being surrounded by gypsies as some might think but a fear of losing him so soon after her brother was killed.
Clopin stood up, cup in hand and prepared to make a toast. The crowd of people gathered fell silent. It was widely known in the gypsy community that Henri had been a great source of help.
"Tonight we gather to mourn Henri Clement. He was a brave man who risked his own life to do what he thought was right. In a world that has shunned our people he welcomed them. And tonight he paid the price for that kindness. That price was his life, snuffed out at the hands of Frollo. Many of you will know that I would have soon called him my brother. Tonight I honor him as such. He may have been born a gadjo but he is every bit my kin as all of you. His memory will not be forgotten. To Henri!"
"Henri!" echoed the crowd. Clopin looked over at Madeleine who had tears in her eyes. He placed his hand over hers as he sat back down and gave it a gentle squeeze.
Author's Note: Well at least Henri will be remembered. We're nearing the end of the story so thank you to everyone who has read and commented. Please leave your thoughts on the story it means a lot to know people are enjoying it. Until next week!
Chapter 25: Terror
Chapter Text
After the dinner Clopin and Madeleine returned to his tent.
"You can stay the night in here, I'll sleep somewhere else," Clopin told her, adding the last bit as he didn't want her to get the wrong idea and think he intended to take advantage of her.
"Thank you Clopin. For everything," Madeleine replied softly as she sat down on the bed. She bit her lip as if nervous than said.
"But could you stay, I don't want to be alone tonight," there was hint of desperation in the plea and Clopin walked over and joined her on the bed, pulling her into his arms so her head was resting on his chest as they lay back.
"Would you care to hear a story?" he asked softly. He knew distractions often helped with grief. Madeleine nodded and Clopin began.
"Once there was a beautiful lady who saved a handsome young gypsy," Clopin saw Madeleine's mouth twitch upward slightly.
"The two were from completely different worlds yet their hearts beat as one and it wasn't long before they realized they had fallen for each other. They faced many challenges and not everyone was happy at first that they were together. But together, they triumphed and eventually the world accepted their love. The lady and the gypsy went on to live long and happy lives."
Clopin glanced down at Madeleine and saw that she had at last fallen asleep. He stroked her golden hair as he watched her. He could only hope their story would turn out as happy as the one he told. But with things how they were there was no certainty to be found.
HoND
It took a day or two for Madeleine to get used to life in the Court of Miracles. She hadn't gone above ground since her arrival. Not that she could if she wanted to. Things were far too dangerous and people now only went out to get food. Needless to say the catacombs were a bit cramped and restless.
Things were not looking good. Frollo was continuing his burning of the city as he searched for Esmerelda. The number of hangings had gone from a couple a month to nearly daily. Francois Aubert the weaver from their secret circle had just barely managed to escape to the Court with the gypsy couple he was hiding. Byron Leandre had not been so lucky. The old man was caught trying to smuggle out some gypsies and had been executed. Word was he hadn't gone quietly.
That left the Miller's family as the only people involved in their secret group left above ground and Madeleine was terrified for them.
To distract herself Madeleine helped look after some of the children of the Court, entertaining them with stories when Clopin could not spare the time, and even beginning to teach some of the older ones to read and write.
The stress was clearly taking it's toll on everyone but perhaps nobody more so than Clopin. He tried to put on a brave face for his people but Madeleine knew him well enough to tell that he was scared for his people. The Court had remained a secret for decades but with the vigor of Frollo's search that safety was becoming less sure by the day.
Madeleine had never been one prone to hate or grudges. She could get angry yes but she had never felt a hatred like the one that burned inside her for Frollo. If anyone deserved Hell it was him.
She sat in Esmerelda's tent, sewing a blanket for one of the women in the Court who was expecting a child soon, while Esmerelda paced up and down.
"We have to do something! We can't just sit here."
"And what do you suggest? Clopin is having a hard enough time just keeping everyone safe. There's no way we could take on Frollo." Madeleine reminded her friend. Esmerelda groaned.
"I know. But I feel awful just sitting here. This is all my fault. I'm the one Frollo is after." Madeleine sighed.
"It's not all your fault Esme. You might be the catalyst for this whole thing but Frollo's sanity has been in question for a while and his hatred of gypsies didn't start with you."
"Maybe, I just wish I could go above ground and do something useful like get the Miller's family out."
"Believe me, I'm just as worried," Madeleine replied.
"I wish Clopin hadn't banned me from going up above," sighed Esmerelda. "I'm even worried about that Captain of the Guard. He seemed like he might actually be a decent fellow."
"Clopin is just looking out for you. But why are you worried about dear Pheobus?" Madeleine asked raising an eyebrow as mischievous smile crossed her face.
"It's nothing! I mean, decent people are the ones most at risk right now," defended Esmerelda rather lamely.
"I think someone fancies the Captain of the Guard," Madeleine said in a singsong voice now grinning.
"Shut up!" said Esmerelda half laughing as she threw a pillow at Madeleine who ducked just in time.
"Pheobus and Esmerelda sitting in a tree...oof!" Esmerelda's pillow had hit it's target this time.
"You can't talk, you're engaged to my cousin of all people," the dark haired woman retorted. At that Madeleine set aside her sewing and threw a pillow at Esmerelda. A fight ensued leaving the two women sprawled on the floor laughing.
"Really though, do you like him?" Madeleine asked. Esmerelda blushed.
"Maybe, I know I feel SOMETHING for him. I'm just not certain what." Madeleine stood and picked up her sewing.
"I'm sure you'll figure it out."
"Don't you DARE tell Clopin!" Esmerelda warned her and Madeleine laughed.
"My lips are sealed."
HoND
Madeleine was sitting in the tent she shared with Clopin when said man burst in looking a little frantic.
"Have you seen Esmerelda?" Madeleine shook her head.
"Not since this morning."
"Damn that woman! She's disappeared."
"Meaning she's gone above ground!" Madeleine gasped.
"I'll send someone out to look for her this evening." Clopin said. Madeleine stood up and hugged him.
"It'll be alright," she whispered. Hoping more than believing the words to be true.
HoND
Sometime later Madeleine heard a commotion outside the tent people were shouting and singing. Stepping outside she saw Clopin standing up on the platform at the end of the hall with a Quasimodo and Captain Pheobus who both had a noose around their necks.
"We find you totally innocent which is the worst crime of all so now you're going to hang!" sang Clopin. Before he could follow through on his threat a voice spoke from the crowd.
"Stop!" Madeleine saw Esmerelda push her way through the crowd up to the platform. Madeleine swiftly followed.
"They aren't spies, they're friends!" Esmerelda said to Clopin.
"Why didn't you say so?" asked Clopin cheerily. Madeleine shot him a slightly whithering look.
"Perhaps because you didn't give them a chance?"
"This is the soldier that saved the Miller's family. And Quasimodo helped me escape the Cathedral." Esmerelda explained as she and Madeleine removed the gags.
"The Miller's family?" asked Madeleine sharply.
"They're safe," Pheobus reassured her before speaking to the crowd. "We came to warn you. Frollo is coming! He knows where you are hiding and will attack at dawn with a thousand men!" Madeleine's heart plummeted.
"Then there is no time to waste! We must leave immediately!" declared Esmerelda. All the gypsies scattered.
"You took a terrible risk coming here. It may not show but we are grateful." Esmerelda told Pheobus and despite the terrible situation Madeleine couldn't stop the small smile that briefly flickered across her face.
"Don't thank me, thank Quasimodo. I wouldn't have found my way here if it weren't for him." Pheobus said modestly.
"And nor would I," said a sinister voice. Madeleine turned and to her horror saw Judge Claude Frollo leering at them triumphantly
Chapter 26: Capture
Chapter Text
"After twenty years of searching, the Court of Miracles is mine at last. Dear Quasimodo, I always knew you'd be of use to me someday." Madeleine felt sickened by the sadistic tone of Frollo's voice as he approached them.
"What do you mean?" asked Esmerelda but Madeleine had already figured it out. Frollo had tricked Quasimodo and preyed on his good nature.
"Why he led me right to you," Frollo told them with a smirk. He then turned to Phoebus and Madeleine.
"Ah and look what else I have caught in my web--Captain Phoebus and Mademoiselle Clement back from the dead. Another miracle I shall soon remedy. There will be a little bonfire in the square tomorrow and you are all invited to attend. Lock them up!" The guards converged on the crowd. Madeleine felt herself wrenched away from Clopin.
"Get your hands off her!" yelled Clopin fighting to get back to her.
"And what do we have here?" asked Frollo looking between them. His face twisted in disgust. "Just like your traitor brother. Knock out the gypsy and bring the girl to me at the Palace of Justice."
"No! Leave him alone!" cried Madeleine as a guard hit Clopin over the head and the gypsy crumpled. Tears flowed down her face as she was dragged away. How had it all gone so wrong?
HoND
Madeleine found herself standing in a cavernous room with a fireplace and cross at the far end of the room. Frollo stood in front of it while Madeleine glared at him, her hands chained.
"I suppose you are wondering why you are here," he said. Madeleine didn't reply.
"You see despite the traitorous actions you and your brother took my conscience..."
"You have one of those?" quipped Madeleine. At this point she didn't care about angering Frollo. She had nothing left to lose. Frollo glared at her.
"As I said my conscience will not allow me to execute one so young without giving you the opportunity to show remorse and atone for your actions. I can see how one so young and impressionable could be influenced by the deceitful actions of your brother and the gypsy scum he aided. Repent now and I will spare your life."
"Repent for what exactly? Behaving like a decent human being? Showing compassion to the less fortunate? Treating those who are different with equality? Falling in love? Tell me Minister, where in the Bible are those defined as sins?" she asked scornfully.
"The devil comes in many forms to corrupt the innocent." Madeleine scoffed.
"You really are off your rocker if you think you are innocent. People like you twist the words of the law and the Lord to defend your prejudice. You hold yourself up as holier than the rest of us, when in reality you are infinitely worse than those you seek to persecute."
"If you do not repent you shall die with the rest of the vermin," Frollo threatened as he towered over her. Madeleine did not back away despite the height difference.
"Then I shall do so gladly. When I go to my grave I can do so with a clear conscience. Can you say the same?" she asked raising an eyebrow.
"You shall go to Hell for your choice," Frollo told her. Madeleine smirked.
"Well then, I'll be sure to introduce you to Satan when you join me. I'm sure you two will have lots in common." For a moment she saw fear flash across Frollo's face. He raised his hand and slapped her across the face. One of the gold rings he wore cut across her cheek drawing blood.
"Take her away!" Frollo ordered. Madeleine didn't both to struggle and simply shot Frollo a look of contempt.
HoND
Clopin paced the crowded dungeon. He was currently feeling a mix of fear and anger. Now not only were his people, who he'd tried so hard to protect, going to be executed. But the love of his life had been taken away to speak with Frollo. He tried not to think what Frollo might do to her. All for the crime of loving him. It was all his worst fears realized.
"I should have been more careful. I'm so sorry," Clopin turned to see a miserable looking Phoebus.
"Yes, you should be. Decades of safety violated by two idiots." he said scornfully.
"I really was trying to help," Phoebus told him. Clopin knew the man spoke the truth but it felt good to unleash some of his stress on someone.
"Yes, well, the road to hell, or in this case execution is paved with good intentions." Clopin told him with a glare.
Suddenly the was a clang of a door being opened and echoing footsteps approached the packed cell. Madeleine was dragged into view. The guards unchained her hands, opened the door and threw her inside.
She stumbled and Clopin caught her pulling her tightly into his embrace.
"Thank goodness you're alive," he whispered as she returned the hug. They pulled apart and he saw a long cut on her cheek. He reached up gently to touch it.
"Did Frollo do this?" he asked.
"Yes, I got a bit mouthy with him after he asked me to repent to save my life," she replied dryly.
Perhaps it was the seriousness of the situation and hysteria setting in but Clopin laughed softly at her words. His sweet, brave Madeleine. However his face soon fell.
"This is all my fault, you wouldn't be here if it weren't for me," he told her as the two of them sat down in a corner. Madeleine's aquamarine eyes widened in surprise before narrowing slightly. She placed a hand on his cheek.
"Clopin NONE of this is your fault."
"I couldn't protect you, let alone my people," he protested with a shake of his head.
"You listen to me Clopin Trouillefou, I do not regret for one moment falling in love with you. I knew the risks and I accepted them. Even if this leads to my death, I wouldn't exchange our time together for anything in the world. We stand and fall together. As for your people. Did you lead them to the Court? Did you reveal the location to Frollo? Did you take unnecessary risks that resulted in our capture? No. You put all your heart into protecting these people. No one could have done more. Frollo deserves the blame for all that has happened. So don't you dare for one second blame yourself."
Clopin looked at her face which shone with passion. He leaned in and kissed her before resting his forehead against hers.
"Thank you mon amour. You truly are the most wonderful woman I have ever met. If this is truly the end, know that I love you more deeply than words can express."
"I know," whispered Madeleine before kissing him passionately. At last they pulled apart and Clopin wrapped an arm about her shoulders. Madeleine rested her head on his shoulder and entwined their fingers together.
"Hand in my hand and we promise to never let go. We're walking a tightrope," she sang softly. Clopin sang the next line.
"High in the sky we can see the whole world down below. We're walking a tightrope," their voices harmonized.
"Now I know you'll catch me if I should fall. Well it's all an adventure that comes with a breathtaking view. Walking a tightrope with you."

Chapter 27: Heroism and Happy Endings
Chapter Text
Morning came too soon. The door to the cell opened and three guards entered. Two went to grab Madeleine.
Clopin moved to stop them but was halted when the third guard grabbed one of the children and held a knife to her throat.
"Anyone resists and the girl gets it." He said. Clopin was forced to watch helplessly as Madeleine was taken away. Feeling as if his heart had gone with her.
HoND
"Where are you taking me?" Demanded Madeleine.
"You're to be burned with the witch," one of the guards informed her. Fear began to set in as Madeleine was shoved into a bare room. A long cotton shift was thrown in after her.
"You have five minutes to change," ordered the guard. Madeleine looked around for some way of escape but found none. She changed into the shift and five minutes later the guards returned.
Once they escorted her out of the Palace of Justice she was thrown in and chained to a cart which carried her to Notre Dame. The sky was red and ominous. When they reached the cathedral she was dragged out of the cart. She made to struggle and escape into the crowd but to no avail.
Many people had gathered but none looked to keen on the burning. Some were even actively trying to interfere but were stopped by the guards. Gypsies had been thrown in cages on wheels set up at the edge of the crowd.
In front of it all was a platform with a pyre on top. Esmerelda was already tied to the stake. Madeleine was pulled up the platform and bound back to back with Esmerelda.
"What are you doing here!?" Exclaimed Esmerelda.
" Apparently Frollo decided he needed more fuel for the fire." Madeleine replied dryly. "Any escape ideas?"
"No, I don't like to give into despair but I can't see a way out," the gypsy replied.
"Any way bar giving in to Frollo which is NOT going to happen." Madeleine said. Despite the impending doom and fear she felt Madeleine refused to violate her principles for the sake of survival. Frollo now mounted the platform. He leaned in to speak to Esmerelda.
"The time has come gypsy! You stand upon the brink of the abyss. Your friend has chosen death but I can still save you from the flames of this world and the next. Choose me or the fire!" Madeleine heard Esmerelda spit in Frollo's face.
"That a girl," said Madeleine proud of her friend.
"Both women have refused to recant! These evil women have put the souls of every citizen in Paris in danger!"
Frollo thrust his torch into the wood at the foot of the stake. The smoke began to choke Madeleine as she struggled desperately to get free. She held her breath doing her best to breathe in as little as possible.
Suddenly a figure swung down from Notre Dame. It knocked away the guards and ripped the bonds holding Esmerelda and Madeleine.
Madeleine stumbled off the pyre still feeling lightheaded from the smoke. She could now see that Quadimodo was their savior. Now the boy was clearly faced with the dilemma of trying to get both her and Esmerelda to safety.
Seeing that Esmerelda was unconscious having clearly inhaled more smoke than Madeleine the blond waved her hand coughing out the words.
"Take her...and go!" Quasimodo nodded and throwing Esmerelda over his shoulder he climbed back up Notre Dame.
HoND
Clopin gripped the bars of his cage tightly as he watched Madeleine and Esmerelda being tied to the stake. His hatred for Frollo had never been stronger. Speaking of Frollo, he had just thrust the torch into the pyre when several things happened at once.
First Quasimodo swung down from Notre Dame and freed the girls, at the same time Phoebus managed to knock out the guard in front of his cage and grab the keys. He freed himself and then tossed the keys to Clopin who opened his own cage.
Grabbing a dagger from a fallen guard he fought his way through the crowd, which Phoebus had just rallied into fighting the guards, and up to the platform. When he reached the top Madeleine flew into his arms.
"Look!" She gasped pointing up at Notre Dame. Lava had begun to pour from the gargoyles mouths causing people to scatter. High above near the top of the cathedral several figures could be seen on top of the gargoyles.
The one which Clopin guessed was Frollo stood up on top of one of the gargoyles ready to strike down Quasimodo with his sword only to slip. Frollo caught himself however the neck of the gargoyle broke and he was sent down into the lava below.
"He really did go to Hell," commented Madeleine dryly. With Frollo's death the sky cleared and the lava disappeared. After a few moments the Cathedral door's opened and Phoebus and Esmerelda stepped out hand in hand.
They were followed cautiously by Quasimodo. Silence reigned and then Claire the little girl who was threatened earlier walked up and placed her hand on Quasimodo's misshapen face.
"Three cheers for Quasimodo the hunchback of Notre Dame!!" Called Clopin breaking the silence. He turned to see Madeleine smiling at him. The crowd cheered a placed Quasimodo on their shoulders as Clopin and Madeleine descended the stairs. Clopin picked up Claire and began to sing.
"Now here is a riddle to guess if you can sing the bells of Notre Dame!"
He pulled out his Frollo puppet as Madeleine sang the next line in her clear soprano.
"What makes a monster and what makes a man?"
He set Claire down and put away the puppet. Clopin then took Madeleine's hands as they sang
"Sing the bells, Bells, Bells, Bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, BELLS OF NOTRE DAME!!"
Author's note: Sorry for the delay. Sadly life does have to come before writing. We've got one more chapter coming in the form of an epilogue. Thank you to everyone who has read this and especially those who have commented. Please leave your thoughts on the story below. Until next week!
Chapter 28: Epilogue
Chapter Text
5 years later
Madeleine Trouillefou peered out from the red tent. She wore a red top which had long billowy sleeves that left her shoulders bare as well as he midrift. She also had a matching knee length red skirt with a gold beaded belt, purple shoes with a long red sheer scarf. A gold necklace adorned her neck and she wore a gold circlet over her gold hair which hung down her back and matching earrings.
There was quite a crowd gathered for the festival. Quasimodo and Judge Jaque Martin sat on a raised platform on the left side of the square. Both smiled cheerfully in excitement and anticipation.
People had gradually accepted Quasimodo and the new minister's friendly attitude towards gypsies had really made Paris a more accepting and cheerful place.
"Big crowd" said Clopin as he came up behind her.
"Bigger than usual," commented Madeleine. "Which is why you two" she began turning to face her twin sons Henri and Harodain "will be staying by your Uncle Phoebus."
Both boys were 5 years old and had inherited their fathers dark hair and complexion. However it was Madeleine's aquamarine eyes which stared back at her.
"Yes Mama!" They said before running out of the tent. The King and Queen of the gypsies shared a laugh at their children's enthusiasm.
"Soon they'll be wanting to join in," said Clopin.
"True," Agreed Madeleine. "Speaking of which, it's nearly time for your entrance."
"No kiss for good luck?" Asked Clopin cheskily. Madeleine rolled her eyes. Nonetheless she moved to give him a peck on the lips only to have him grab her by the waist and pull her into a deeper and more passionate kiss. Madeleine finally pulled away and Clopin smirked.
"Rascal," she scolded trying to hold back her smile.
"Always," replied Clopin before bounding out of the tent with Madeleine right behind. As she moved to get into place Madeleine smiled. After all that she and Clopin had gone through the two of them had finally gotten their happy ending.
