Work Text:

Y/N. awoke slowly and felt the space next to her. She noticed her bed was missing a super soldier who must still be on his morning run. On the side table, she saw the beautiful, vintage engagement ring her boyfriend (now fiancé), Steve gave her last night. Normally, her Steve was not the greatest at keeping secrets and stealth, but she had no clue this was coming when her Captain made a beautiful dinner last night.

Y/N came home from work, tired from another long week. Y/N was wearing a red, empire waist dress that flowed out at her waist with black tights and black heels, which were kicked off by the door. The apartment smelled wonderful with the scent of delicious lasagna. “Sweetheart, is that you?” Steve said from the kitchen.

“Yes, it’s me, hon,” you answered.

Steve came out of the kitchen, dressed in a simple pair of dark jeans, button up blue shirt that complemented his eyes, and black dress shoes. The finishing touch was an apron that read, “I like it spicy ;)” (a gag gift from Sam for Christmas a few years ago). He had a glass of red wine ready for Y/N and pressed a brief, yet passionate kiss. “Dinner is almost ready. Why don’t you sit down?”, Steve said with a smirk followed by another brief kiss.

Y/N followed his instructions and took a seat at the set table with candles. Y/N worried that she forgot something important. It wasn’t their anniversary; they had celebrated their three year anniversary last month. It wasn’t Steve’s birthday, which was sort of hard to forget. Was it her birthday? No, that was still months off. Still, best not look a gift horse in the mouth and all that. It wasn’t that Steve never cooked, he was actually quite talented. In fact, her wonderful boyfriend knew she was overwhelmed with work and had been sick last week.

Dinner was absolutely delicious in which the couple talked about everything and nothing. Y/N noticed Steve was becoming more fidgety and nervous as the meal went on. After the meal was finished, Y/N attempted to help Steve clean up, but it was a lost cause as Steve had already finished most of the cleaning prior to dinner. Moving over to the sofa, Y/N looked at her phone and noticed a missed call from her mother. As she was about to open it, Y/N heard Steve return from the kitchen.
Standing in the doorway, Steve looked like he was going to be sick, which should be impossible due to the serum. “Steve, are you okay?” you asked, setting your phone to the side.

“Yeah, I’m good. Just nervous,” he said. Steve looked down and the floor and put his band on the back of his head. Steve looked into her Y/E/C eyes and said in a husky voice, “I’m just about to ask the most gorgeous woman the most important question in my life.” Steve grabbed her hands and pulled her into a standing position. Once Y/N was standing, he got down on one knee and pulled out a small velvet box.

“Y/N Y/M/N Y/L/N, I have loved you from the moment you ran into that coffee shop, drenched from the rain, cussing up a storm. Even then, you were the most beautiful, fiercest, wonderful woman I had ever seen in 100 years. I’m still not sure what gave me the confidence to approach a woman like you, but I am so thankful I did. Every day since, I have felt like the luckiest man in the world getting to be with you and call you my girl. I have seen your unbelievable kindness and incredible strength in everything you do. I used to think the worst thing that ever happened was waking up 67 years in the future with no family or friends. Now, I think it might be the greatest blessing because it led me to you. I love you with all of my heart and soul, so Y/N, would you do me the honor of being my wife. Will you marry me?” Steve finished his beautiful speech and Y/N could see the tears in his eyes despite tears rolling down her y/s/c cheeks.

Y/N got down on her knees and looked at Steve in the eyes. It was the easiest question to answer. Y/N whispered, “Yes. Yes, Steve. I will marry you.”

Looking at the ring, Y/N smiled, remembering last night. After talking with her mother (who almost ruined the proposal. Of course Steve went to her parents to ask for their blessing beforehand), you and Steve partook in some celebratory lovemaking. Y/N got out of bed and went into the bathroom to take a shower.

Ten minutes later, Y/N came out, wrapped in a towel. She turned some music on and began dancing along the upbeat, Taylor Swift song while brushing out her hair. As the pre-chorus began, Y/N starting singing,

“Kiss me once 'cause you know I had a long night (Oh)
Kiss me twice 'cause it's gonna be alright (Uh)
Three times 'cause I waited my whole life (1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4)”

As Y/N was singing, Steve came back from his morning run and quietly snuck into their apartment. He could hear his fiancé singing along and decided to surprise her. Peeking through the door, Steve saw you dancing in a towel and using your hairbrush as a microphone.

“I like shiny things, but I'd marry you with paper rings
Uh huh, that's right
Darling, you're the one I want, and
I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this
Uh huh, that's right
Darling, you're the one I want
In paper rings, in picture frames, in dirty dreams
Oh, you're the one I want”

“Beautiful song there, doll,” Steve said in the doorway. He had his arms crossed, leaning against the doorframe with a shit-eating grin on his face.

Y/N screamed in surprise and fell to the floor, while clutching the towel to her chest. “What the fuck, Steve?!?!? You almost gave me a heart attack!” Y/N exclaimed as Steve cackled in laughter.

Steve walked into their room and helped you sit up, laughing the whole time. As Y/N sat up, her fiancé said, “If I knew you would agree to marry me with a ring made out of paper, I wouldn’t have stressed over finding that,” while looking at the ring on the bedside table.

Y/N grabbed the ring and shouted, “No! You gave this to me! You will have to pry this ring from my cold, dead, hands, Steven Grant Rogers.” Of course, Y/N did not need an expensive ring; she would have married him with paper rings, but she already had this one, which she loved. It had fit perfectly on her Y/S/C finger, just like the glass slipper. Steve laughed and leaned in to kiss her, but Y/N stopped him and said, “Uh-uh, no way. You will have to shower before you get to kiss your fiancé.”

“Well, could my beautiful fiancé be persuaded to join me?” Steve asked with a coy smile. Y/N nodded her head in assent. Before she knew it, Y/N was lifted off of the ground and lost the towel, going back into the shower with her wonderful fiancé.

Thanks for reading! Comments are welcomed at the end. I'm trying to write a longer fic, but I'm not sure I trust myself and my abilities to do it. Let me know what you think!
