Chapter Text
The rain sounded so nice on the window panes, the small tap-taps were soothing as thunder rumbled outside. It was late, and the darkness outside could swallow you whole. With an alarm set for tomorrow, everything was peaceful. Sleep came easily.
A deep breath in. Slowly breathe out. Hear the rain still gently falling outside. Listen to the sound of the washing machine rumbling next door. “Fuck, these walls are thin,” Sarah grumbled as she got up, effectively ruining any chance she’d had of more sleep. Her stomach grumbled and she walked towards the small microwave, “Okay, okay. Food, I get it.” While getting out food, she looked around the room. It was pretty boring as far as rooms go, it being a standard-issue dorm and all. Beige walls, 2 small cork boards, a desk, some storage, and one small bed. She sighed as she realized that class began at 9 that morning. Did she even have enough time to run and get something from the cafeteria?
Being in a boarding school had its perks, but this was not one of them. Her class was on the other side of the building, and it was 8:51. Damn it. She grabbed her bag and sprinted out the door and down the stairs. It was humid outside, but of course, there were still some kids playing basketball. A few shouted out to her, and she only yelled back “Later!”. She reached into her bag for the pass to get into the main building and realized that it wasn’t there. Shit, she must have forgotten it back in her room. She really did not have time for this. She turned around to run back to her building only for the door to open.
Someone stood there, a person she didn’t recognize. “Oh, thanks! I woke up late, forgot my pass, you know. I’m going to be so late,” she rambled, “hey! Wait! What’s your name? I’d be dead right now if it wasn’t for you, I’ve got to make it up to you sometime.”
They turned, smirked, and said “Name’s Mia. Mia Stewart. And don’t worry about it.”
“Okay, Mia. My name’s Sarah Jackson. Okay, I gotta do something. Just, let me buy you a coffee at lunch,” Mia continued walking forward and seemed to ignore her.
“Come on! Please?” Sarah begged.
“Fine, fine. Aren’t you gonna be late if you talk any longer?”
Sarah looked down at her watch and swore. “You’re right. I have to go. But I will hunt you down at lunch to buy you that coffee, got it?”
Mia turned down a different hallway. “Sounds vaguely threatening. I’ll see you then if you can find me.”
Sarah smirked, then turned and began to sprint again. Once she made it into class, she muttered a few excuses and slid into her seat. But she didn’t stop thinking about that girl she’d met in the hallway.

Mia glared down at the coffee, as if willing it to warm up by itself. It didn’t and stayed much too cold to drink. Not a fan of iced coffee, and debating dumping it out, she recalled that strange interaction from a few weeks back. That strange girl, practically begging for Mia to...what? Accept a favour? All that had happened was she’d been locked out, and then let in by a normal student just trying to be nice. What was so special about that? Either way, she wouldn’t get out of Mia’s head. Hadn’t spotted her anywhere, so she’d probably forgotten. That was for the best. Friends, especially new ones, were too much work right now. Out of nowhere, a shout echoed through the small shop. “HEY MIA!” a tall girl called from the back. “I FOUND YOU!”
As it turned out, the girl had not forgotten about Mia. Sarah raced through the shop as if Mia was going to get away if she was any slower. Of course, she hadn’t moved, but Sarah ran anyway.
“I found you! Now I get to buy you a coffee,” she said breathlessly. “I guess I’m more out of shape than I thought.”
“Well, you were going pretty fast. I suppose I’ll accept a coffee. On one condition.”
Sarah looked up and they locked eyes. “Anything,” she gasped between breaths, “as long as it’s not just ‘Go away.”
“It’s not, I promise. Just sit with me. If you’re gonna buy me a coffee, I’d like to get to know you.
“Gladly! I’ll have you know, I’m a great friend.”
Mia murmured “Humble much?” but Sarah either didn’t hear it or chose to ignore it.
“Okay, what’s your favourite type of coffee? I don’t really drink it, but I’m sure you do.”
Mia laughed and asked “Why’d you ask to get me coffee if you don’t even drink it? You’re weird.”
Sarah sat down and rolled her eyes. “Yeah, yeah. Whatever. So, a latte?”
Mia smirked. “You know what? Sure.”
“Okay, I’ll go grab one. Latte for you, hot chocolate for me. Be back in a second,” she got up and walked the few feet to the counter.
Mia looked closer at this girl for the first time. Short black hair, a small tattoo on the back of her neck that she couldn’t quite make out. A white tank top and basketball shorts. She looked pretty average, and honestly? That’s what Mia needed. No crazy for her, not now. Mia herself was pretty average too. Shoulder-length brown hair, with streaks of blonde (formerly blue). Button-up floral shirt, and overalls. All normal. Then she got the notification and remembered the things about her that weren’t quite normal. She hated to do this, but she wrote her discord tag down on the napkin sitting on the table and dashed out the door, already hating herself for it.
Sarah turned around and her face fell. “Mia? Where’d she go?” She noticed the note on the table and added the tag to her phone before dumping the latte in the trash angrily.
