Chapter 1
Peter hated working for the company, but every now and again his mother dragged him back in. No matter all the shit she had pulled over the years she still had a hold on him, somewhere deep, deep inside of him he still loved her. So when these ‘little’ jobs came up 9 out of 10 times he would do them.
This particular job was a little weird though he had very little info other than his mother wanted to keep it in the family, which meant him as he was pretty much the only one left. Strange that she just hadn’t let Gabriel just take care of whatever this was. That was how it usually went now, Angela treated Gabriel more like a son than Peter at times, not that Peter particularly cared, with his mother off his back Peter could lead a somewhat normal life.
Pulling up outside the Petrelli family home Peter took a deep breath and made his way to the rear of the house, where he knew his mother would be sitting on the veranda having tea just as she always was at this time of day.
‘Hello Peter’ Angela said cheerfully as she rose to give Peter a kiss on the cheek as he moved to greet her.
‘Hello Mother’ Peter said as he moved around the table to sit across from her. ‘Well I’m here, what do you need me to do this time?’ Peter asked as he took his seat.
‘Straight to the point, no conversation Peter? No enquiring after my health?’ Angela asked with a raised eyebrow.
‘Mother you and I both know we are way beyond small talk, now lets get to the point so I can do whatever it is you want me to do for you and I can get back to my life.’ Peter responded in a flat tone.
‘OK Peter’, Angela said as she slid a manilla envelope across the table to Peter. ‘Some information has come to light that is pertinent to our family's interests, please read the file in the envelope and then we can have a conversation about what further steps need to be taken’ Angela stood and walked toward the house. ‘I’ll be in my office when you’re finished’ Angela called over her shoulder as she stepped through the open French doors leading into the house.
Peter didn’t respond he simply opened the envelope and started to read the file determined to get on with the job and get back to his life as soon as possible.
The first page was innocuous, a hospital report dated 24 years ago it contained details of the birth of baby girl in Texas, a still birth he found out as he read further on. The reason for the still birth was undetermined, not that unusual sometimes it just wasn’t meant to be. Peter scanned the page for the names of the parents of the child to find some relevance to his family but they were nowhere to be found.
Peter moved on to the next page, an internal Company report addressed to his father Arthur Petrelli.
The title ‘Stillbirth of the Child of Nathan Petrelli and Meredith Gordon’
Wait, thought Peter, that wasn’t right Meredith and Nathan were Claire’s parents and she was very much alive and living in London.
Peter read on, the report described how the ‘problem’ had been taken care of, the problem being Meredith’s pregnancy. The Company had killed Nathan and Meredith's child? Peter thought in disgust, although he knew personally how far the Company would go for their own gain.
The next page was another hospital report on the birth of another baby girl in Texas, this baby was healthy but it appeared the mother of the child had died in childbirth from a massive haemorrhage, the father was unknown.
The next couple of pages were the adoption papers of the second child by Noah and Sandra Bennet, they had named her Claire.
The final page was another internal Company report to Arthur about the ‘persuasion’ of Meredith to give the child up for adoption, clearly she hadn’t been told her child was dead and the orders given to Noah to take the child and raise it as his own till such a time as the Company saw fit. Which lined up with what Noah had said.
Peter closed the file and held his head in his hands, what the actual fuck was going on? He and everyone else for that matter had spent the last six years believing that Claire was Nathan’s daughter even Nathan himself had believed it. What possible reason would the company have to pull something like this?
Agitated Peter grabbed the file and followed his mother to her office.
