Chapter Text
Shoyo Hinata had known from an early age that he’d present as an omega. He’d known before the blood tests in elementary school; before his actual presentation during his last year in middle school – he had just known. Despite all of this, Hinata knew exactly what he wanted to do and accomplish in his life beyond the fact that he was an omega.
He wanted to fly.
He wanted to be the next little giant to play for the Karasuno High School volleyball club.
After struggles with playing in a legitimate volleyball club in middle school, Hinata was thrilled to be able to attend Karasuno High School and join the volleyball club.
All of this despite being an omega. When he came forward and told his teammates that he was an omega, he was shocked to learn that he wasn’t the only one on the team.
“I’m an omega,” Sugawara said smiling.
“I am too.” Tadashi Yamaguchi softly added.
“Just because you are labeled as something doesn’t mean you need to let it hold you back,” Daichi said, gripping a hold of Hinata’s shoulder.
Tears weld up in his eyes as he nodded in agreement. “Ok,” he said with a smile.
As the first weeks of school continued, the team grew closer and better despite the powerhouses of Aoba Johsai and Shiratorizawa being in the prefecture.
Luckily for them, they had a practice match scheduled with Aoba Johsai.
During the match, the two teams sparred back and forth, until the end of the second set when he walked into the gym.
“Uh-oh. Did you let them win a set?” a voice said from behind the Aoba Johsai coach
“Aha! You’re back. How’s the ankle?” the coach asked turning around.
“Solid! I’m good for regular practice now. It was just a light sprain after all.”
“Sheesh. Be more careful in the future, okay?” the coach said looking at the Aoba Johsai 3rd year setter and captain of the volleyball team, Tooru Oikawa. “After all of your high and mighty demands to have Kageyama play, it’s an embarrassment for us to get stuck without out star setter for nearly the whole game!”
Oikawa said nothing except rub the back of his head in embarrassment.
Suddenly there was a squeal from the gallery of girls’ voices. “OIKAWA!!!!”
Turning towards the voices, Tanaka and Hinata were both distracted by the girl’s voices. That was until they looked at the bench and saw who the girls were squealing about.
“He’s here.” Kageyama growled under his breath as the team reset after the end of the set.
“Who?” Hinata asked.
“Kageyama, who is that pretty gentleman? I find him highly unpleasant.” Tanaka asked.
“That’s Oikawa. He’s an offense-oriented setter. I expect he’s one of their top offensive players period.”
‘Wow. He can get that much praise out of Kageyama?’ Hinata thought to himself.
“And he’s totally twisted.” Kageyama said continuing.
“Coming from you?” Hinata asked in shock.
“More than Tsukishima!” Tanaka said in shock. “Holy crap! That’s bad! So if you know him, does that mean he’s from Kitagawa Daiichi?”
“Yes,” Kageyama simply said. “He was my upper classman in middle school. I learned how to serve and block from watching him. He’s good.”
‘So if Kageyama is called the king, would that make him the great king?’ Hinata thought to himself as he looked towards the Aoba Johsai bench at the new comer.
“Hey there Tobio! It’s been a while. You’ve grown!” Oikawa said turning and looking at the team.
As Hinata locked eyes with the captain of Aoba Johsai, he felt his breath momentarily stop and his entire world seemed to come into a sharper focus. He shook his head to regain his bearings. What the hell was going on?
As the set progressed, Hinata seemed antsy to see Oikawa play.
Finally with the set almost at an end with Karasuno in the lead, Oikawa entered the game to pinch serve. Shocked at his strong and accurate serve, the team managed to readjust and receive one of Oikawa’s serves and in the last moment, Hinata and Kageyama performed their crazy quick attack. In a blink of an eye, Hinata sent the ball into the far back corner of the Aoba Johsai side. It had gone flying just past Oikawa’s ear and landed just short of the out of bounds line.
Oikawa stood there in shock for a moment before a smile spread across his face as he locked eyes with Karasuno’s #10. “Well, well, well. This is interesting…” he thought to himself.
Hinata dug through his book bag in search of his ear buds on the bus ride back to Karasuno. As he pulled out the tangled mess of wires, he noticed that there was a folded piece of paper stuck in between some of the wires. Pulling the paper free, he unfolded it and read it.
‘Chibi-Chan ~ Please call or text me. Tooru Oikawa. 090-****-****’
Hinata’s eyes grew large. Why did the Aoba Johsai captain want to contact him? And how did he manage to get the note into his bag? Thinking back to the confrontation just before leaving Aoba Johsai, Oikawa did brush close to him as he walked past his teammates. Perhaps that was when.
Oh well.
Time to see what Oikawa wanted.
Quickly looking around to make sure that no one was paying attention, Hinata quickly typed in Oikawa’s number into a text message before composing a message.
‘Hi! It is Shoyo Hinata from Karasuno. I found your note in my bag. Why did you want me to contact you?’
Clicking out of the text message, Hinata began to listen to some music. Within moments, he received a response.
‘I was wondering If we could meet this weekend. I think we have something in common other than volleyball. 😉’
Hinata smiled as he quickly typed a response. ‘You felt it too?’
‘I did. So this weekend?’
‘We have practice until noon on Saturday. Can we meet that afternoon?’
‘Of course! We’ll finalize plans later. Have a great night Hinata.’
‘You too.’
As the messages ended, Hinata squealed silently to himself. He couldn’t believe it. He had found his true mate! AND they liked volleyball too! He looked forward to Saturday afternoon.
Over the next few days Hinata and Oikawa sent messages back and forth throughout their day. It had all begun when Hinata had woken up the following morning after the Aoba Johsai practice match to find a text message from Oikawa.
‘Good morning! Have a great day. Don’t let Kageyama get you down. 😉😋’
Hinata laughed at the message as the typed a response. ‘I’ll try not to! I hope your day is great!!! 😃’
As he jumped out of bed, he couldn’t help but have a huge smile on his face.
And the messages hadn’t stopped there. In between classes, at lunch, before practice and when he had gotten home at night, Hinata was constantly texting with Oikawa. Yet he had made sure that none of his teammates knew – which was a bit hard to keep from Kageyama since he was always with him at lunch. The thing that worried Hinata the most was the fact that he was a first year and that his true mate was from a rival school.
Although Hinata had told his mom about Oikawa and how everything had seemed brighter as soon as they had looked into each other’s eyes. She had simply smiled and said that she hoped it all worked out.
Finally Saturday had arrived. Hinata couldn’t wait until that afternoon when he and Oikawa would meet at a local park first before deciding where to go or what to do.
“Hey! Wanna practice spikes?” Kageyama asked at the end of Saturday’s practice.
“Sorry. I have stuff to do today!” Hinata yelled as he ran out of the gym doors.
Kageyama stood there in shock for a moment. Something was more important than volleyball?
Oikawa sat on a bench in the park that Hinata agreed to meet him at on Saturday afternoon. His entire body was humming with excitement. Ever since the practice game with Karasuno and seeing Shoyo Hinata, everything suddenly made more sense. All of his life he had been taught from his father that alphas were strong while omegas were weak and needed to be protected. Yet as far as he could tell, Hinata was far from weak.
He continued to muse about Hinata for a few more minutes until he saw the object of his thoughts running towards him down the park’s path. He smiled brightly as he waved at Hinata to get his attention.
“I hope you haven’t been waiting long,” Hinata said as he plopped down on the bench next to Oikawa.
“Not too long,” he responded with a smile. “So how was practice?”
Hinata launched into the story about his Saturday practice from working on receives and quicks to working on his “pitiful” serve. Oikawa listened the entire time with a smile on his face. The orange haired was absolutely adorable and scary at the same time – especially when playing volleyball. After a few minutes, Hinata paused in his story and looked at Oikawa. “I’m not talking too much am I?”
“Not at all. In fact I enjoy listening to you talk,” Oikawa responded as he reached out and placed his hand against Hinata’s on the park bench. “In all honesty, I’m not entirely sure how to go about this…”
“Go about what?”
“You and I. Destiny obviously wants us together since apparently are made for each other.”
Hinata laughed. “While I’m thrilled that I found my true mate, it doesn’t mean we have to be together if we don’t work out. I’m only 15, almost 16 and you’re probably 17, maybe close to 18. Who says that we have to be together?”
“No one,” Oikawa said gripping Hinata’s hand.
“Exactly. So let’s have some fun then!” Hinata said jumping to his feet and pulling Oikawa up with him as he grasped his hand. Oikawa looked at him expectantly, wondering why they were suddenly standing up.
“Come on,” he said pulling Oikawa by the hand back down the path. “There’s an ice cream stand not far from here. Let’s go get some! My treat.”
With a smile, Oikawa followed – hand in hand.
