Work Text:

I woke up, my body burning. My skin felt like it was screaming, with each cell melting into each other, molten hot. My eyes opened, and I saw stars. I moved my arm and I could feel the freezing water below my body. I scrambled to get out of the pond. Panting while I climbed out I began to cry, this pain was unbearable, but the tears just made it worse. Finally on land I flung myself into the sand, squirming deep into the shore. As the sand helped my skin dry, I finally was able to relax--just enough to move out of the sandbank I had buried myself in. I looked around, and was met with towering trees and a bright night sky. Flopping back down into the sand I brought my hands up to my head and rubbed my eyes. After taking them off my face I saw they were both grey. Not the usual one white, one black, but this isn't unusual for me. While my hands were submerged, the water burned me, but it always affected my skin. Too much water scarred, sometimes the scars fade, but the worst ones stayed. These won't stay thankfully--I wasn't in the water long enough. Plus, it would have been too tough to explain to everyone else. I needed to get home. It's been an hour. An hour of me making my way through the forest. For some reason the forest is so much louder than usual. On nights like this, everything seemed worse. Well, everything was worse. I woke up in the middle of nowhere again, everything forgotten, everything foggy, everything gone. Again. It hasn't happened in a while, but every time it happened, it was worse. I've never worked up this far from home before. Luckily I didn't lose my compass again, otherwise getting home would take even longer. "Hello?" I heard behind me. I stopped and turned, but there was nothing. "You're far from home" I heard again behind me. I turned again. "Who are you?" I asked. She was about my height, which was, unusual. She had black hair, and wore a long black dress. She had black wings coming from her back, they looked, somehow familiar. She looked confused. "I haven't met you yet? How can you see me?"
