Work Text:

Kalego wasn’t really what one would call a sentimental demon. He tended to not dwell on things that have already passed, but rather preferred to focus on his goals and duties, move forward, and learn from his mistakes, if any. In fact, if he had to choose a term, he would consider the word private slightly more appropriate to call himself. He did not like idle conversation, and those close to his age would say that he was anti-social, as he preferred to spend his time alone, often chooses to forego social events, and only attends when he either has no choice or was tricked into it, such as the year-end faculty party he was currently at.

It wasn’t necessarily that he didn’t enjoy social events (getting to drink good food and alcohol on someone else’s budget was enjoyable after all), he was just selective about the other party-goers who he would be forced to interact with for several hours.

For instance, parties that he attended with Balam tended to become tolerable, because the other man knew his temperament and always tried to remove any annoying individuals before they went too far with their antics. Balam’s success could be because of his nice demeanor, making people want to agree to his requests, or it could be because of his large frame, which allowed him the physical capacity to remove others from his immediate vicinity the moment Kalego’s eyebrow started to twitch in annoyance. It was because of this Balam-wall tonight that Kalego was able to avoid the clutches of Dali and Raim, who were trying to gather everyone for a group photo. The two demons wanted to preserve the memory of this year’s batch of teachers, especially since there was a new addition, namely Robin, after such a long time.

Speaking of the larger demon, Kalego mused, unlike him, Balam was very sentimental. From his seat at the table, he watched his companion join the others for a series of photos, each succeeding pose becoming more ridiculous than the last. Because of his still somewhat scary appearance, Balam didn’t often have people come up to him for a chat or for a photo, and although you couldn’t really see his face, Kalego knew that his friend was actually really happy that he was able to interact with his coworkers this way. Kalego had no similar inclinations. He did not want to be dragged for a photo and be told to smile. He didn’t smile for other people, and certainly not when he didn’t actually feel happy.

After several minutes of watching the group, he noticed Balam tottering back to his place at the table beside him, and before the larger demon fully made his way over, Kalego stood up and walked to the door leading to the outside of the restaurant they were currently at. He trusted that Balam knew to follow him.

Once outside, he gave a meaningful glance to Balam and continued to walk further away from the restaurant. “Kalego-kun,” Balam said, trotting slightly to walk beside the dark-haired demon instead of following behind him. “Where are we going?”

Kalego remained silent for a few more steps before he stopped at a relatively lit area away from the noise, turned to face his companion, and said, “This place should be fine. Give me your phone.”

“My phone?” Balam said confused, but still obediently surrendered his phone into Kalego’s waiting palm.

Kalego, being already used to handling the device, quickly searched for the app what he wanted to open and took a step closer to the bigger demon. “Stay still.” He instructed as he stretched his arm out. Balam watched curiously before he realized what was happening, crinkled his eyes in joy, and crouched into the other’s space to better accommodate what Kalego wanted to do.

Once finished with his task, Kalego let out a small smirk of satisfaction and returned the phone to its owner. “Send me the nicest one later.” He spoke.

Balam smiled as he received his phone, and asked the smaller demon. “Thank you, Kalego-kun. Will you print this out too?” Kalego chose not to reply, but both of them had a feeling that his bedroom table would be getting a new addition soon. He could put it beside the one that had them in a similar position but in reverse; back when Balam was still shorter than Kalego.

Kalego wasn’t really a sentimental demon, but he didn’t mind having a few photos of someone important to him, if nothing else but in order to make the other smile when they came over.

Notes:

I have this image in my head that the personal touches of Kalego in his room are only his demon cactuses and a few pictures of him and Balam. There might be one of his family, but from what we’ve seen of them so far (brother and uncle), they don’t seem the ‘family photo’ type. There might also be one of him, Balam, Opera, and Sullivan that Kalego was forced to keep but unlikely. Kalego probably got his first Balego frame as a gift from Balam and since then, Balam has been his supplier.

I just love pairs with fluffy/sunshine-y tops x dark/snarky bottoms!
