Work Text:
Namjoon was so stressed. It was three days before Christmas, and he still hadn’t found the perfect gift for Y/n. He had shopped online for weeks while he was out of the country, but he had no specific ideas. He’d even been so bold as to ask her directly what she wanted for Christmas, but she had been no help.
“I don’t need presents, Joonie. I will be happy if you are just here with me,” she’d answered.
Deep down, he knew she didn’t really need material things to be happy, but he still really wanted to get her something special. There was just something about finding the perfect gift for someone and seeing them light up when they opened it; that desire compounded for him because it was Y/n. They had been dating for just over a year, and they were by no means ready to be engaged, which was what both Jimin and Taehyung had suggested when he asked his brothers for their opinion. Jin had suggested some random designer outfit, and Hoseok had suggested a designer bag. Jungkook had completely shied away from giving an answer, claiming, “I don’t know Noona well enough to help.” Unsurprisingly, Yoongi had been the most helpful.
“Joon, you are just going to have to go out and walk around until something speaks to you. We can all make suggestions, but we don’t know her as intimately as you do, and we can’t suggest something that is going to blow her mind.”
That’s why he found himself wandering in and out of shops three days before Christmas, desperate to find the perfect gift for his girlfriend. He had been at this for hours and was starting to get seriously discouraged. In an effort to try to gather his thoughts, he popped into a small coffee shop to get something warm to drink. As he was waiting on his coffee, an older couple came into the shop and caught his eye. They came into the shop hand in hand, talking quietly together, but what really struck Namjoon was the way that the man looked at his wife; he looked at her like she was the only other person in the room. It was sweet and soft, and made Namjoon’s heart flutter in his chest. Some part of him hoped to have many moments like that with Y/n in the future.
When his name was called, he took his cup and bowed to the couple as he left the shop and started back on his trek with thoughts of the couple in his head. As he wandered into and out of shops, it occurred to him that maybe he had been overthinking this whole thing. He tended to overthink many things in his life, so he made the decision that he’d buy something at the very next shop he went in and have it gift wrapped before he could second guess the purchase.
It turned out that the next shop he went into was a bookstore. As he browsed the aisles, he tried his best to turn off his brain and just browse to see if anything spoke to him. Namjoon entered one of the last aisles of the shop and saw a signed copy of one of Y/n’s favorite books. He knew she’d love that, so he picked that up, along with a gorgeous pale blue leather-bound journal. He spoke with the shopkeeper, who recommended a set of pens that wouldn’t bleed through the pages of the journal but would write well and could be refilled with ink. Outside the shop, a group of high school students were gift wrapping packages to raise money for a trip for their music department, so Namjoon had them wrap the gifts in shiny purple gift wrap.
The gifts looked lovely under the tree, reflecting the colored lights. Y/n was sleeping softly on the sofa when Namjoon came in and placed the gifts under the tree. When he looked at her, deep in dreams, his heart fluttered a bit similarly to the way it had when he’d watched the couple in the coffee shop. He smiled softly, before kneeling beside the sofa and brushing her hair gently off her face.
Y/n slowly opened her eyes at the warmth of his hand on her cheek. “Hi, Joonie,” she whispered.
“Hi, Baby. I’m sorry I woke you. I didn’t mean to.”
“It’s okay. I’m glad you are home. I always miss you when you are away, even if you are just down the street.”
Namjoon smiled at her, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her lips. “I miss you when I’m away too, Baby. But let’s not think about that since I’m here now.”
“You’re right. Let’s go cuddle in bed.”
That night, as Y/n laid asleep with her head pressed to his bare chest, Namjoon pressed a kiss to the top of her hair. If the way his heart was reacting to her presence, maybe he wasn’t as far from marrying her as he thought.
