Work Text:
‘Why is he always so annoying, I cannot...I’m going to...’
Wei WuXian dejectedly pulled back his hand, his eyes wandering over the space that he was quick to put between them. Jiang Cheng was a tad bit too pissed off by his shenanigans and he was not about to risk his own well-being to test his brother’s limits.
Darting to the side, he hid behind Jiang YanLi who for once did not take his side in the argument at all. Usually she was like the definition of peace and brought contentment over the disgruntled pair thus keeping both of her brothers alive up to this point.
Apparently, accidentally emptying Jiang Cheng luggage out and accidentally switching his clothes to instant ramen was where his beloved A-Jie drew the line. It was nothing but a mere contretemps though.
She was only dropping them off so Wei WuXian feared that after she leaves them here he will be in mortal peril again. He also felt somewhat rueful that she had to make another trip to bring Jiang Cheng's clothes but it was his fault. Wei WuXian graciously offered his own ones, volunteering them for the cause.
It was registration day and even though Jiang Cheng came here to study economy and Wei WuXian enrolled into computer sciences, he was fairly certain that they’ll room together. Apparently he was wrong there.
It wasn’t that the students from different majors could not stay together, instead he was faced with Jiang Cheng turning his nose high up, swaggering away and blatantly ignoring his elder when Wei WuXian called after him.
He watched baffled how he got a room with a stranger instead and snapping his head off to the side and towards the sky, left Wei WuXian without a word of acknowledgement.
“Cheng Cheng it’s raining you’ll drown like that, isn’t water getting into your nostrils?” There were very little people left behind but those selective few at least had the decency to laugh while Jiang Cheng did not turn back only flipped him the bird.
Sighing heavily he dragged his own arse to one of the tables under the wide alcove and heaved his bag up onto the desk. “Wei WuXian.”
The boy blinked one, two, three time before finally snapping back to reality and nervously grabbing a new sheet of application paper.
“Are you alright with anyone or is there a person you wish to room with?”
“Anyone is fine.” The boy smiled and if Wei WuXian wouldn’t know better he’d say it was relief.
“Then I’ll place you into the C building, third floor, there’s a map on the University’s website if you get lost, but it opens from the main courtyard so you should be able to find it without any problems. 3 will be your room’s number.” Wei WuXian nodded, even though he was already forgetting where he’ll live when an arm draped around his shoulder, a cheerful tone speaking up from beside him.
“You have been tricked my friend. It’s Nie HuaiSang, I’ve been a student here for some time now and let me tell you that you will change your room within the first week so might as well do it now.”
‘Poor soul, this child has no idea what he’s getting himself into.’
“You do not look older than me.”
“I’m certainly older and wiser kid, listen to me!” Wei WuXian turned back to the shy boy, who was apparently tricking him then to the smirking lad that still hung off of his shoulder, greatly amused as he thought of Wei WuXian failing. At what? He had no idea.
“Why would I change?”
“There’s a tale as old as this University that anyone who rooms with such person will beg the administration to be placed elsewhere. According to the campus legends the longest someone lasted was four days and two hours.” Dramatically doing a strange hand motion, Wei WuXian felt his chest being hit by the lad.
“Yes, my friend that is correct, your ears are not deceiving you. I did just say two hours because the boy got out of the room at two in the morning and has never returned.”
“Actually, your roommate is the same age as you. Certainly not old enough to have done what Nie HuaiSang is claiming here.”
Wei WuXian blinked nonchalantly, his gaze switching between the two as they carried on, bickering about who was correct. He took the key and his papers, leaving the two with an ‘I like a challenge’ but was not certain they even noticed.
Thankfully every information he needed was on the paper he took so his brain wasn’t forced to overwork itself by trying to remember something he has never even paid attention to.
He soon enough found the building and hogging his luggage to the third floor he also managed to easily find room number three. Just as he was jiggling the key into the lock, he felt a presence behind himself and saw that Nie HuaiSang somehow managed to follow him.
“I was being serious, that child was clearly doing his job because of his sister who keeps forcing him to socialise. You will soon learn friend that I know everyone here.”
“So if I’m following correctly then you are claiming that I’ve entered a time warp where you are the same age as me but know everything and my roommate is the same age as me but has been haunting this place for decades. Am I onto something here?”
“Heghh, My frie...what’s your name again?”
“Wei WuXian.” He left the key in the lock and turned wholly towards the other man. “Wei WuXian first of all you have to be in your twenties whilst I am way older and more mature than that so my wisdom cannot be questioned by a mere child like you.”
Leaning forward, Nie HuaiSang grabbed the sides of his face making him lean further away. He was pretty shameless but he has never met someone worse than himself. “Your new roommate is the nephew of Lan QiRen, his family owns the school and he has grown up here. Trust me when I say this, you’ll be running in two days max. I’m giving you credit here because you seem pretty bad-ass but will never even come close to what is waiting for you behind that door.”
‘He certainly has the balls but won’t be able to overtake this one, I’m sure of that.’
Laughing in his face, Nie HuaiSang let go and literally skipped away, not entering any of the rooms and honestly Wei WuXian doubted that he lived in this building. Maybe he wasn’t even studying here for all he knew.
Opening the door, he realised that his roommate was not just absent but probably has not even moved in, already contradicting everything that he was just told.
Choosing the bed closer to the window, he plopped down and fished out his phone messaging Jiang Cheng to ask where his room was. He refused to tell him, claiming to want nothing to do with Wei WuXian so he gave another day or two for him to wallow in his self-pity before inevitably crawling back to Wei WuXian.
Uncertain how much time has passed, it was already dark outside when he was getting ready to go out and explore. The door opened and it could only be Wei WuXian’s new roommate who has entered.
Measuring up the man, he decided that it sounded impossibly for someone so objectively hot to gain such reputation. The opposite he’d believe, people fighting to share their space with him, but not the other way around.
“Hi there roomie, I’m Wei WuXian but you can call me Wei Ying because we’re going to be close. ‘am heading out, wanna come with?”
“Curfew is at ten, you cannot go out.” The man walked over and stood in front of him, his face composed and void of any emotions wholly. “My bed.”
Opening his mouth, Wei WuXian wasn’t sure what to say at all. Even though it was exceedingly rare, this man has single-handedly made him speechless. “But the room was untouched when I got here, what do you mean yours?”
He did get off of the bed, not caring all that much which one he’ll use. If this handsome stranger wanted this one he’ll have the other bed. Jumping onto the one closer to the door, he watched the man folding back the now wrinkled cover-after all Wei WuXian did roll around in it for half a day-and grabbed his pyjamas, leaving Wei WuXian baffled and alone.
After he got over his initial shock, he managed to laugh enough that his ribs were hurting. The man-who failed to introduce himself-was absolutely hilarious. Wei WuXian grabbed a sharpie on his way out and once he locked their door, not wanting to mortify his roommate by leaving it open whilst he’s showering, he stopped in front of it.
In the nameplate, he indeed read Lan WangJi so he figured that maybe Nie HuaiSang was onto something but still could not help but find him ridiculous. He scribbled his own name right above, to assort his dominance, then went ahead and explored the campus.
By the end of the night, he has made plenty of new acquaintances and managed to get slightly tipsy even though he had no money on him. It was his secret talent to leech off of people anyways so he was invited by others generously.
Falling into the door, he was not in the slightest bit careful or cautious but as he fell face first onto the ground, his shoes refusing to come off of his feet, he needed to realise that Lan WangJi was in the dark, unmoving as if actually asleep.
By the amount of ruckus he has made, it was only natural that even if that was the case, his roommate would awaken. Perhaps the dead would also rise by such an obnoxious entrance.
Switching on the light by his bed, Lan WangJi looked very unimpressed but Wei WuXian was exceedingly impudent when drunk-or at all times-and easily disregarded other people’s boundaries.
Seating himself onto Lan WangJi’s bed, perhaps even a little onto him, he cackled as he reached out and poked the other’s cheek. “Did I wake you up? Next time you have to come with me...what’s your name again? You never introduced yourself Lan WangJi.”
His hand was slapped away and the motion was severe enough to completely throw him off balance and Lan WangJi was not considerate enough to catch him, instead his gaze was cold on his now spread out form over the ground.
“Curfew is at ten in the evening, tomorrow you will get back before then hand over your key or else I will provide further punishment.” Blinking dumbly, Wei WuXian gathered himself off of the ground, mumbling something that eerily sounded like insults.
“Shower first. Disgusting.” He did not even manage to crawl into his bed before Lan WangJi was snapping at him again. He was trying to be thoughtful, indulging the other and keen on not disturbing him.
After the insult, he went ahead and acting just like Jiang Cheng always does, he snapped on every single one of their lights, loudly rummaging through his case until he secured everything one might need and granted himself a shower that took almost a full hour where he blessed Lan WangJi with a full concert.
When he finally came out, leaving the shower messy with littered droplets of water clinging to every surface, instead of wiped off like Lan WangJi had.
The lights were all beaming just as he has left them and his roommate has turned away from him, lying motionlessly. Wei WuXian made sure to blow his nose properly, unpack all of his stuff and record a lengthy message for his sister about his first day before finally switching the lights off and getting in bed as well.
The next morning he woke up by himself and blinking his eyes open the room was wholly empty. It was still registration and seeing how Lan WangJi might actually be related to the owner of this University, he figured he probably helps out with the paperwork.
He felt slightly guilty about the amount of mêlée that he has caused yesterday especially after Lan WangJi refused to be passive-aggressive about it and left this morning quietly, without disturbing Wei WuXian at all.
His punishment came in the form of a neck ache firstly, making him truly question how Jiang Cheng was able to train himself so faultlessly to throw his head back in disdain. Secondly, Jiang YanLi has called then left a message as well, asking him to commute home for Jiang Cheng’s stuff because she had no time as the peacock ended up crossing out Wei WuXian’s original plans and it was Wei WuXian’s fault to begin with.
Finally he felt even guiltier than ever before when he went to wash his teeth and found their bathroom squeaky clean again, even though yesterday he had not left it in such a pristine condition.
Doing as told, he managed to convince Jiang Cheng to meet him once he has spent his whole day travelling, only after he threatened to throw the whole bag into the water fountain that was in front of the main building.
The pair grabbed some food and agreed to go and watch a movie so Jiang Cheng was making a reservation. “Okay go and grab money because I won’t pay for you again, meet me here in half an hour, the film starts at nine thirty and I will leave without you!”
“Wait A-Cheng, is there actually a curfew? We are university students and yesterday there were a lot of people out and about, am I being fooled?”
“I have no clue if there is or not, but why would anyone follow such an idiotic rule even if there was one?! We are adults, that’s just plain stupid.”
“Yeah, you’re right...I’ll bring my roomie, we are already very close, see ya Didi.”
It was almost nine by the time he reached his own building but the cinema was really close so they should be able to make it with a bit of a jog. Lan WangJi was already present so Wei WuXian grinned widely.
“Hi there, I’m sorry for not kicking things off on the best of starts but we are going out, come on and get ready. I’ll introduce you to my baby brother.” Lan WangJi looked very unimpressed.
“Curfew is at ten, I told you I’ll be taking your key.” He actually held out his hand, waiting for Wei WuXian to hand over their dorm’s key. Frowning deeply, he actually took out the bundle of keys he carried around and detached one.
He was not usually keen on using his bizarre ability but he needed to know if this man was for real or not. Lan WangJi’s face remained jaded, but it was exceedingly clear that he was uncomfortable with being touched.
Wei WuXian was clasping the key hard, not letting go as he placed his fist on top of Lan WangJi’s open palm then cupped the hand from under so it cannot be retrieved.
“Are you fucking with me or is there actually a curfew?” Lan WangJi took a deeper breath than usual but other than that he has shown nothing, even though Wei WuXian was paying exorbitant amounts of attention to every bit of change.
“En, curfew is at ten.” Lan WangJi thought of nothing, seemingly one hundred percent honest but Wei WuXian still did not let go.
“Why can’t I break it?”
“Rules are not meant to be broken.” Yet again, Lan WangJi thought of nothing and tried to pull his hand away for a second time but Wei WuXian held on even more firmly.
“What’s your name Lan WangJi? You know mine, can’t we get along well?” Lan WangJi remained unmoving, aloof and composed as if Wei WuXian wasn’t acting strange at all but finally he thought of something, whilst his answer remained unsaid, only the slightest of twitch from one of his eyebrows, Wei WuXian finally heard something unfiltered.
‘Why is he acting like that? What is so hard in following a simple rule?!’
That was everything he has managed to squeeze out of Lan WangJi, so he let out a sigh of his own and finally let go. Lan WangJi pulled away right off so the key clattered against the floor. “I’ll tell my didi to just go without me then. You are being unfair though, no one keeps a curfew here.”
Lan WangJi said nothing but bent down for the key and put it into the drawer at his desk that would be very easy for him to steal back. “Shower first.”
Wei WuXian groaned obnoxiously, but did as told, figuring that Lan WangJi was more pressed about cleaning after Wei WuXian twice if anything. He had no reason to repeat yesterday so he got ready swiftly, even though he was tempted to see what Lan WangJi would do if he wouldn’t be granted enough time to get in bed by ten.
This time he was more than able to witness with his own two eyes how his roommate switched off the main lights and leaving only Wei WuXian’s on, he got into bed and seemingly went to sleep.
“You must be kidding me...” His whispered voice was still loud in the soundless space and Wei WuXian had no idea what to do with himself.
The next morning was the last day for registration and from tomorrow they’ll have their classes so he was not surprised to wake up being alone. His key was left on his bedside table and once he got ready for the day he closed back their door that Lan WangJi always made sure to lock upon leaving, never forgetting it open whilst he was still inside, sleeping idly.
Walking down the corridor and arm came around him so he tried to shake it off swiftly but he still wasn’t quick enough.
‘Whoa, the kid is more impressive than I thought.’
“Mate you have passed my prediction, will you break the record of four days and two hours with Lan WangJi?”
“Nie HuaiSang, you said you know everything” having a hard time keeping Nie HuaiSang’s hands off of himself, Wei WuXian tried his best to get information even if it might not be the correct one. “do you happen to know Lan WangJi’s real name?”
“Even I have my limits kid,” the arm was back around him even with all of his efforts. “no one knows his name.”
‘Poor child, must be stricken by the good looks, soon he’ll learn, like everyone else, why he’s called the ice prince.’
“He’s not bad at all actually, we get on really well. I do not see a reason as to why I should change my room.” Shaking off the touch, he hurried away, hoping that he’ll be able to get away this time around.
It was very rare that he used this ability of his intentionally. It happened when he was five for the first time. His parents said their farewell, going on a trip with their company and his grandmother was taking care of him.
His memory wasn’t the best and he could not even remember his parents but that was the last time he has seen them. He has never managed to figure out what changed or if it was even connected or just a simple coincidence but after that day whenever he touched someone he could hear their thoughts.
He remembered his grandmother, drawing something on his palms and asking Wei WuXian what she was saying afterwards but she never started to talk. Her lips were unmoving yet, Wei WuXian was able to hear her loud and clear thus marking the point he met any of his family.
After that he was left alone and no one ever came back for him so he ended up with the Jiang family.
Testing his ability many times before, he decided that it was one hundred percent legit and also learnt to stay clear of physical contact because people were a lot more disappointing than he has originally imagined.
He has been through one-too-many fake friends and nasty thoughts from people who were always nice to his face. Learning how to be outgoing yet distanced from everyone was hard at first, he used to have so much love to give but he had been betrayed by too many for him to still trust ever so blindly.
Now it was all reserved for Jiang YanLi and Jiang Cheng. With the later it was the only time he has managed to experience the opposite as his brother was nothing but rude yet he loved him very much, scolding Wei WuXian for everything was his way of trying to keep him safe and out of trouble.
The two of them have never let him down before and they genuinely loved him as their own blood, their thoughts matching what was being told to him. It was a lot rarer to find honest, true people than he would have originally thought.
Many might deem his ability as a blessing and cool, he on the other hand, absolutely hated it. It might have saved him from being outright betrayed but one’s confidence is seriously damaged when they hear nothing but criticism even in other’s thoughts.
After the registrations were over and a full month has passed, Wei WuXian was gaining a brand new type of fame within the campus. He was suspecting Nie HuaiSang greatly for that as the other never failed to be shocked with each passing day where Wei WuXian refused to switch rooms.
Lan WangJi was just as pristine as always, loving his rules and surrounded by an air of frost but they have managed to develop a certain agreement and had a routine. Every second day Wei WuXian broke the curfew but when the next day rolled around, Lan WangJi let him sleep in and in the afternoon his key was taken, which he lent willingly.
He always skipped over Lan WangJi’s test days, on those he made up an excuse to faultlessly stay in and was exceedingly quiet compared to his usual self.
Other than that, Wei WuXian was doing his best to map out his limits, pushing Lan WangJi in all sorts of ways to get a rise out of him or a laugh. Any reaction would have satisfied him but none was given.
Lan WangJi respected him in his own way as well, never waking him and never actually reporting his repeated offence of breaking the curfew. He even bought a coffee maker, though Wei WuXian was alone who drank coffee.
He was having his worst day-Friday which was quite the irony-as he had a morning class from seven thirty which in itself should be illegal according to him but Fridays were always salvaged by Lan WangJi who never failed to lift his spirits and was always studying in their room at such ungodly hour.
Consequently these were the only days the pair met in the morning as well and Lan WangJi always left out a mug of coffee for him and some sort of breakfast that he made.
“Gege so kind of you, you know how I cannot function without my black-bean-juice.” Lan WangJi’s lips curved downwards thus resulting Wei WuXian’s own ones to lift up high. He has learnt a lot about Lan WangJi by living together but his knowledge was consisting of strange scattered bits and pieces instead of anything coherent where he knew that Lan WangJi despised when Wei WuXian called coffee that but still wasn’t told the other’s name.
Learning the exact way Lan WangJi had a system for absolutely everything, leaving all of his belongings in specific ways throughout their living space and noticing if Wei WuXian dared to accidentally misplace his shampoo and conditioner, switching the saint order, but did not even know if the other had siblings.
Managing to pry enough, he has at least found out Lan WangJi’s birthday but even after searching all across the web, he managed to find nothing besides odd articles about his achievements. Apparently, Lan WangJi has won a lot of different competitions, from instruments to sports to trivia, he has done it all and excelled at everything.
He was also aware that the other was studying literature and history, having more books stored away in his closet than clothes and just like everything else in life, Lan WangJi took his education very seriously. Wei WuXian attempted to distract him just once while studying, only to be locked out of their room for multiple hours, thus he has never again messed with the other in such way.
It almost felt as if he was being trained and somehow it worked. Lan WangJi gave him these odd chastisements or positive reinforcement and Wei WuXian has started to pay attention and try to earn little treats as if truly a disciplined animal.
They seemingly agreed to coexist and developed a relationship where there was perfect synergy between the two even though their personalities could not have been more different. Wei WuXian also suspected that those rumoured room changes happened with people who were way less unruly and obnoxious than him but it was never Lan WangJi who threw someone out.
As he was idly stirring spice into the bowl of Jook an idea came to him so he turned towards Lan WangJi with a mischief grin as he loudly slurped his coffee from his other hand.
“Lan WangJi, gege, you are still so rude to me. I’ve told you my name and asked you multiple times to call me by it. Since we are so close and it feels wrong for me to address you so formally from today on I will call you Baobei.”
Waiting excitedly, he did not expect anything big from Lan WangJi anymore but his senses have sharpened in his own opinion so he managed to convince himself that the air that was breathed out was indeed a bit louder than usual, Lan WangJi putting more force behind the action.
“So baobei, what are the plans for the weekend,” he carried on like nothing has happened-because nothing did-watching Lan WangJi getting up from his seat sooner than usual. “I thought you could spend some quality time with your one and only A-Ying, don’t you want me?!”
Lan WangJi took his luggage out of the closet and started to pack, making Wei WuXian’s heart clench uncomfortably. He wasn’t moving out, right?!
Watching dejectedly, he forgot that he was talking and also holding his spoon so his soup poured out on the table. He thought that Lan WangJi kind of liked him, if nothing more at least put up with him so this truly felt like being slapped.
He did not ever dare to touch Lan WangJi again, the more he’s grown restful around the other, the least he wished to do so and when it came to his roommate it was the easiest it has ever been. Lan WangJi was not the touchy type and avoiding all forms of contact was fairly easy for him.
“I will leave for the weekend, Wei WuXian can break the rules without retribution.” Making a strange noise, Wei WuXian was glad that Lan WangJi was not facing him as he was certain that his face showed how relieved he was.
“Where are you going baobei?”
“My brother’s.”
“Gege you have a brother? You never tell me anything!” Whining loudly Wei WuXian got up and threw himself down onto Lan WangJi’s already nicely made bed, the Sandalwood wrapping around him immediately even though he had no idea where it came from. It wasn’t a bath product and Lan WangJi, more often than not, also did Wei WuXian’s laundry so he had no clue what was that scented him in such way. It was very pleasant though.
“I’ve even shown you my nephew’s ultrasound and made you listen to the heartbeat of my little precious pickle yet you ignore me so boorishly. You are such a brute baobei.”
“Wei WuXian has never asked.” Snorting insufferably, he started to take the clothes out of the suitcase, each time Lan WangJi placed something in, he took one out and waited to be busted for it. “I literally do nothing but ask you questions only to be ignored!”
Lan WangJi, "..."
“So a brother ha? I’m sure he’s just as perfect as you are, what does he do?”
“He works for an IT company.”
“Cool maybe if I suck up to him, I’ll manage to score myself a fancy job and become rich. That has always been my dream.”
Lan WangJi seemed oblivious but Wei WuXian knew that it was not actually the case, so he was not shocked when Lan WangJi stepped around him and moved everything he removed back into his case with one, swift motion.
“You know baobei, you kind of make me feel like a fly. You know those annoying as fuck fruit flies?! Just like that!”
Lan WangJi graced him with a barely there eye contact, lasting for no more than it took for Wei WuXian to disappoint Aunt Yu, before he was back to packing up his toiletries, conveniently leaving the door open thus granting Wei WuXian the chance to entertain him further.
“It’s like you are tolerating me, but only barely, not sure if you want me out of your place or simply dead, ahahhaah”
Not sparing an answer, Lan WangJi was soon ready and heading out of their dorm. “Wei WuXian should try to behave.”
Laughing loudly, he quickly pulled his hoodie over his head and grabbed a book, not sure if it was the right one as he departed with Lan WangJi. He was immediately shooed back in, since he unceremoniously forgot his keys.
“Baobei, what the hell will I do without you?! This is not fair...though I do hope you’ll have fun.”
“Mn, brother has rabbits.” First of all Wei WuXian almost tripped and died, second of all he also almost perished by that fact and it was also so random and unprompted. Descending on the stairs, Lan WangJi was quick to grab ahold of him and Wei WuXian needed a second after that as a vision came to him.
It wasn’t rare for people to think of something specific but Lan WangJi thought of said bunnies and his heart was doing a number on him in that very moment.
“That is so freaking adorable, you have to invite me to meet the little fluffies. Dear Lord you will be the death of me Lan WangJi.”
“Lan Zhan.”
Stopping in his wake, he watched Lan WangJi walking ahead of him two whole steps before realising that Wei WuXian stopped and turning back with the smallest hint of a frown. They were already on the yard and students tried to pass by him but he was frozen as if sculpted and placed right there to be one more annoyance for the pupils of this university. Just in case having exams that had nothing to do with the syllabus was not spicy enough for the youth.
It did not last long but for a moment Wei WuXian was unable to function or even form any coherent thoughts, however, his face was soon overtaken by a smile brighter than the sun as he rushed forward to catch up, threading his arm with Lan WangJi’s.
“Lan Zhan, I like it, it suits you. So cute, I’ll walk you to...where are we going again?”
“Brother is in the parking lot, Wei WuXian has class, shouldn’t be late.”
“Lan Zhan, call me Wei Ying, seriously, and I won’t be, you should not wander around all by yourself, such pretty face you might get nabbed.”
Lan WangJi was definitely stronger than the average, especially when it came to arm strength. Once Wei WuXian decided to film him opening a jar of pickled radish for him with his bare hands-even though anyone could, even a toddler, with a knife-bragging to Jiang Cheng about his privileges.
Lan WangJi has never called out his bullocks either, indulging him with all sorts of ludicrous favours.
He went as far as taking Lan WangJi’s suitcase which was only questioned in Lan WangJi’s head but not out loud. In the parking lot there was indeed a fancy bright, white car which did not scream expensive but it was quite clear that it cost more than the amount of damage Wei WuXian created in that one summer camp.
For anyone he’s told before, no one believed him but it was indeed possible to get thrown out of a camp, especially if you decide to roast marshmallows in one of the rooms and accidentally burn down the whole place.
The man who stepped out of the car, going to open the trunk looked very similar to Lan WangJi but as he stepped out from behind the vehicle, he was actually smiling and it only became friendlier when he saw that someone was hanging off of his brother.
“Such a pleasure Lan Zhan’s-brother-whose-name-I-forgot-to-ask, it’s Wei WuXian.” Bowing lightly, the smiley Lan greeted him back, his grin never disappearing even for a second.
‘Wei Ying did not tell brother to call him by name’
Turning towards, Lan WangJi for a mere second, he felt like that was a strange thought but even as such, it came out so flat that it might have been a simple observation. Truth be told, no one really called him by name and he had no idea why he told Lan WangJi to do so.
Jiang YanLi called him A-Xian, his uncle Wei WuXian, his aunt a problem and Jiang Cheng usually went with something like brat or demon. Everyone else used his courtesy name but hearing Lan WangJi thinking of him by his given name brought a smile to his own face for some reason.
“It’s Lan XiChen, so nice to meet you. I’m glad to see WangJi is making friends.” Wei WuXian placed Lan WangJi’s luggage into the car and went as far as producing a tissue-might not have had as much drama as a handkerchief but it was all he got-waving farewell to the pair.
He went out on both Friday and Saturday but his life felt oddly empty all of the sudden and he was starting to miss Lan Zhan a lot. Saturday night, he went home super early and just dejectedly went to bed, angry that no one told him to shower first.
The next day he indulged in a new action as he brought a blanket and sat onto the patch of grass by the parking lot. He’s seen no one else do that in that exact place but even if it appeared bizarre at first, he soon found himself surrounded by cheerful students basking in the rays of sunlight or revising for tomorrow’s class.
He figured that on campus it was truly not an odd sight to see students asleep or studying at any available surface and it was certainly less lonely this way.
Quite early in the afternoon, the fancy-schmancy car came back and it indeed produced his beloved roommate so he was quick to get on his feet. Lan XiChen exited as well, taking out Lan WangJi’s suitcase and lightly resting his hand over the other’s shoulder as if some strange way of showing affection.
Not Wei WuXian’s taste, he’ll rate it three out of light bulb.
Fastening his steps, he started running and could not quite control the force with which he ended up crashing into Lan WangJi, wrapping around him unceremoniously. Lan XiChen stepped back, almost scared from the sudden attack while Lan WangJi instinctively tried to get away, his form halting but tense under his death grip once he spoke up.
“Lan Zhan do not ever leave me again, I was so bored and people just agreed to go and drink and I was invited to parties and the movies with no one warning about the curfew. I left my key inside on three separate occasions, but do not worry gege I can break into places, and also I haven’t even eaten anything today because I went over to Cheng Cheng to feel better about my heartache that could only have been eased by your presence and my dearest didi did not even feed me. The cheek of some people!”
Unwrapping himself when Lan WangJi thought of his name, letting the rest of his thought ease away before Wei WuXian could hear something that would actually break his heart, he waved to Lan XiChen as well who was only watching with a smile by that point.
“Hi there Xiongge” grabbing the luggage out of his hand, he averted his gaze back to his Lan WangJi. “so how was your weekend? How are the bunnies? Did you take pictures? I want to see them.”
Laughing softly, Lan XiChen bid them farewell and left so Wei WuXian was able to drag Lan WangJi back to their room, hoping for some exciting news.
Lan WangJi’s weekend was filled with boring relatives and a charity concert he went on whilst Wei WuXian had watched a horror movie, after which he pranked Jiang Cheng so badly that he actually started to cry when he climbed through his brother’s window and got under his bed, scratching the underside.
Also he has, in person, witnessed someone throwing up in a cup and then drinking it straight back, which was very disturbing but certainly one of a kind. Still he felt like if Lan WangJi would have been present even without such events, things would have been more fun.
To his greatest delight, once they reached their dorm, Lan WangJi disappeared to unpack but not before he lent his very phone to Wei WuXian-the possibilities were endless-so he could look over the photos.
As it turned out, Lan WangJi only kept a very limited selection, almost all of them were of the bunnies but Wei WuXian was not complaining. He was so busy with his heart melting that he forgot to be a menace, though he did put his phone number into Lan WangJi’s phone under the contact name Husband and also called himself so he could do the same in his own phone.
Wei WuXian’s first meal of the day came in the form of supper that Lan WangJi has created and he felt so content that he even forgot to argue for his rights or try and break any rules, wishing his roommate sweet dreams, he fell asleep with a grin still etched onto his face.
As the next morning rolled around, Wei WuXian did not wake up by himself, nor did he do so to his emergency alarm-set to noon-so he ended up missing his classes. He only blinked his eyes open late into the afternoon when Lan WangJi must have finished his own day and came back to their room only to see him still in bed.
His shoulder was shook gently and he could not tell if Lan WangJi was calling out to him or just thinking and also wasn’t able to identify what was said out loud and which parts were only echoing in his head, though he took a wild guess that Lan WangJi would not speculate with words, sounding somewhat concerned, over his well-being.
His head was hurting terribly and as he managed to pry his eyes open, they also hurt and watered a bit. Every single muscle within his body felt like it was on fire and he was quick to close his eyes right back.
“Lan Zhan it hurts.” Lan WangJi’s worry was greater than before, the back of his hand pressed against Wei WuXian’s forehead as the other one held his hair back.
“Wei Ying needs to eat, I’ll make you something then you have to take medication. Rest for a little more.”
Fairly certain that this time it was actually said, he was quick to comply not feeling enough energy to move anyways. Before dozing off, the last thing he felt was the remedy of coldness against his skin, which felt almost as nice as Lan Zhan’s hand did.
He was in a strange state and even though he could hear Lan WangJi in their dorm’s attached kitchenette and was certainly not asleep, he still thought that a whole day have passed when he was bothered again, this time with food.
For once Lan WangJi put spice into his meat soup by himself, shoving it full of vegetables for him. He devoured the whole thing, way hungrier than he thought he would be. Before it was offered, he did not even think about eating and food definitely did not sound like it’d be worth the effort of getting out of his bed.
After eating an apple as well, he was finally provided with some medication and Lan WangJi stayed by his side all along, changing the wet cloth on his forehead from time to time.
Once he felt a tad bit less like human waste, he grabbed it off of his head and placed it across his neck and chest, guiding Lan WangJi’s hand back onto his face, holding one against his cheek and the other across both of his temples to sooth the pounding.
It was a lot more effective and Lan WangJi was an angel and did not pull away even though he probably was annoyed by the behaviour. Even if he was he was not thinking about it.
Not much came through at all and Wei WuXian figured that as a damsel in distress he probably won’t be insulted right in that moment. Lan WangJi only made very obvious statements or had a few ideas as to how to assist.
“Lan Zhan show me your rabbits again, that would definitely help.”
So Lan WangJi did, he felt betrayed at first, losing the hands from his face but was swift to confiscate the mobile and gently remind Lan WangJi of his very important duty by almost slapping himself with the other’s hands. If it weren’t for Lan WangJi, he would have.
The bunnies were just as cute as always and it was fun to listen to Lan WangJi agree with him. Obviously it felt like he was using his powers to almost take advantage of Lan WangJi but if he were to say anything, Lan Zhan would simply think he’s crazy like that one time he tried to tell Jiang Cheng but could not convince him or even if he would believe him, he’d never touch Wei WuXian again in this life and he could not blame him for that.
‘I should somehow make them meet, Wei Ying would be cute with Ying and Guang.’
Pulling back abruptly, Wei WuXian has almost managed to make himself stumble out of his bed as he gripped the phone even tighter. Laughing strangely only made his head hurt again so he halted that action as well and dragged himself into a sitting position.
“I should shower, I’m disgusting, also you haven’t eaten yet so quickly go and do so.” Getting up, he gathered himself enough to actually do as told, whilst Lan WangJi remained seated on the edge of his bed, blinking an extra time between his usual ones.
Rushing to the bathroom as swiftly as he could, he closed the door and tried to assess the situation. He had no idea what was wrong with him. He was more than aware that Lan WangJi meant the rabbits but his heart was still pounding, stubbornly convinced that the affection was for him.
The next question that would bring along is why he would feel such way from just affection. His heart did not beat out of rhythm when Jiang Cheng offered to transfer High School with him when he unfairly got expelled.
Nor did it quicken when his Jiejie made him his favourite pork soup and as she smoothed his hair out of the way, she thought of being proud of her little brothers. At least not like this, so what was the difference between Lan WangJi and his siblings?
He got into the shower only to realise that he was still wholly clothed and also clutching Lan WangJi’s phone to his chest tightly. Placing it on the counter, he stripped and did not mind the shower only running on cold, soothing a whole new type of burning under his skin.
Crawling back into bed, Lan WangJi soon appeared and sat down next to him again. “Can you lift your head?”
Not knowing why, Wei WuXian still did and that’s how he realised that there was no pillow under him prior thus further leading his attention to the fact that Lan WangJi just changed his nasty, sweaty sheets.
His chest suddenly tightening, he felt that pressure around his nose and behind his eyes as if punched so he shut them tightly to avoid making an idiot out of himself. He had no clue as to why he was feeling so strange and emotional all of the sudden but as he felt himself being tucked into bed, for a second his mind reeled back to that one time he had the flu and Jiang YanLi became the first and only person who has ever taken care of him in such way, with so much care. That he could actually remember.
Even his hair was brushed back, just like his A-Jie would do so he let his lips curl upwards in the slightest. “Thank you Li-Jie.”
The next time he awoke, it was already light outside and the clock on the wall suggested that it was almost noon. He certainly knew how to be lazy but on the brighter side he felt genuinely better. Probably due to the medicines Lan Zhan has given him.
Getting out of bed, he realised that he was somehow still hugging Lan WangJi’s phone, his grasp strong as he clutched it to his chest. Shaking his head, he rubbed the screen against his pants a few times, hoping that it will erase the grimy prints that Lan WangJi definitely did not ever have on there.
Speaking of, he was left alone so he could not quite comprehend why on Earth his roommate would disregard his personal safety and possessions, letting Wei WuXian keep his phone for absolutely no reason.
As much as the thought of Lan Zhan trying to take it away, only to receive a well-angled foot between his ribs, mortified him, it also managed to make him laugh.
Leaving it on his desk, he went to the kitchen in hopes of having some left-over soup from yesterday because Lan WangJi was a god and Wei WuXian would commit serious crimes if someone would dare to try and come between him and these meals that Lan Zhan has been preparing for him.
Obviously it was not difficult to add another litre of water or one more cup of rice but to Wei WuXian it did mean the world.
So it was only natural for him to cross realms of disbelief upon seeing just what has Lan WangJi left behind.
First of all, there was a whole feast left out on the small corner table that they usually kept folded away, not having much place to begin with. Lan WangJi has made him new soup, this time it was pho and it looked legit so perhaps he started making it last night, there was a bowl of rice and some pickled radish and baked potatoes.
There was also a note, under a few stacked pill bottles and packages. Reading over the tidy characters, Wei WuXian could do little but eat everything, take the medication and make himself herbal tea, following the exact instructions that Lan WangJi has left for him.
He texted Jiang Cheng, assuring him of his safety even though he was not worried, nor did he realise that Wei WuXian has not bothered him for two days now. He was idly eating the fruit salad that Lan WangJi has cut up for him-for replenishment of vitamins in Wei Ying's more than lacking diet-when the other arrived back.
Coming sooner than usual, Wei WuXian was aware that he skipped his usual library time in order to come and check on him. Knowing how pressed he was with his routine, Wei WuXian felt like crying again so he needed to distract himself quick.
“Gege, so nice to have you back, I missed you loads, are you hungry? I feel like I should cook for you...you know that you’ll spoil me like this, right? I already have issues, what will you do if I fully grow onto your head like an untamed brat?!”
“Wei Ying is better?”
Dragging his chair to Lan WangJi’s desk, hugging the bowl with the other hand, he motioned for him to take a seat.
“I feel fine, I have no idea what have happened yesterday, I’m basically never sick. I’m sorry by the way, it must have been annoying but I swear it won’t happen again I was”
“Don’t apologise.” He has never been cut off by Lan WangJi before so his mind needed a few additional second to comprehend what has just happened. “Ah?”
“Never apologise for being sick, it’s fine as long as you get better.”
“Oh Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan...what have I just told you?”
“Ah?” The tone of the note so bored and unenthusiastic that Wei WuXian could not help but spit the pear slice back into the bowl as he roared with laughter. Lan WangJi was one sneaky chap and he always managed to shock him with these rare moments of his pure comedic ingeniousness.
*
Wei WuXian was listening to a foreign lecture about the catalase enzyme and its relation to diabetes mellitus which evidently had nothing to do with computer sciences, however, this was organised off campus and he was punished for an innocent prank.
It’s not like anyone was hurt by his crafty addition to the canteen, where he managed to somewhat seamlessly refill one of the water dispensers with BaiJiu. His penalty was truly too harsh, seeing how much everyone seemed to enjoy the little surprise.
As he was awakened by an impatient woman who tried to leave the row they were sitting in, he decided that it was a great activity after all, he was quick to judge at first. Refusing to bring an umbrella, even though Lan WangJi placed one by his coat this morning, he watched the downpour from under a small alcove.
He just started his mad dash when and arm wrapped around his middle and held and umbrella above his head, the stranger getting soaked because he decided to be difficult. Elbowing back hard, he bent forward and bit the hand when the soft voice finally reached him. “Wei Ying”
Turning back, his lips were still around Lan WangJi as he drooled onto him dumbly. Pulling off once and for all, he pulled a face and wiped at the exceptionally visible mark that he has left behind though Lan WangJi did not seemed too pressed about it, if he was angry he hid it really well even from himself, seeing that his thought were revolving around Wei WuXian’s leg that was still hanging out into the rain as he spread them apart to have a more stable form to fight.
Scurrying to get up and moulding himself next to Lan WangJi, he was also finally able to realise that Lan WangJi held the entire umbrella above him instead of his own figure. Wiping his jacket with his sleeves, Wei WuXian laughed a little to fill the silence.
“You should have said you’ll be here.”
“Figured that you would find out anyways.”
“Gege, that’s not how it works. Come on now, I’m with a car, borrowed it from Nie HuaiSang. I’ll give you a ride.” For a second Lan WangJi seemed to hesitate-which okay rude-probably judging Wei WuXian a liability when it came to anything let alone transportation, which fair enough.
One time he almost made an accident on a bus he definitely was not even driving so he could see why that would be the case but Lan WangJi still nodded and followed after him, the umbrella tilted more to his side which made Wei WuXian’s heart tremble in his chest.
He wished to argue, demand an answer as to why but his heart would have probably slapped him rather than reply, castigating him if anything for being oblivious.
Opening the door for Lan WangJi, he seemingly hesitated again but this time Wei WuXian was unable to get mad at him seeing how his hand was on Lan WangJi’s back and he was not mulling over whether or not he had a will sorted out but decided to give the umbrella to Wei Ying for the time it took him to cross to the driver’s side.
‘He should not get drenched, what if he’ll get sick?’
It was indeed handed over to him as Lan WangJi got in and closed the door so it also would not get too wet. Wei WuXian needed a second to recover from that and then did as Lan WangJi has imagined and closed the umbrella himself.
“So how about some McDonalds’? You know that I’m sucker for your cooking but it’s almost exam week, we’ll have winter break soon as well, you should rest more.”
“Whatever Wei Ying wants.” Grinning widely, he changed gears and got going. “Now that’s the spirit.”
“Wei Ying should take the food up, I still have to get something done.” Blinking dumbly, Lan WangJi walked him to their building and was now holding out their food to him. “It’s inedible once it gets cold though, you cannot go.”
“I won’t take long, Wei Ying should start eating without me.” As he took the bags, he could not do anything at all, unable to react even though he tried as he watched Lan WangJi's retreating back.
‘I still have to get my brother’s car, I will try to hurry.’
It felt a little too much to comprehend and for the time being, Wei WuXian felt oddly numb. Walking up to their dorm, he shoved the food into the microwave and put it on one minute. Once it was done, he plainly left it in the warmth and changed out of his still fairly dry clothes.
In his free time, he was mulling over just why on Earth Lan WangJi would ride home with him if he went with a car of his own. He had no answer by the time his roommate arrived and he obviously had no right to question so he simply let it go and their food was still edible luckily.
*
Wei WuXian was talking animatedly to Lan WangJi while Jiang Cheng was blinking repeatedly next to them, all three waiting for their ride to travel home for the holidays. With his brother napping whilst trying to stay upright, Wei WuXian had loads of time to chat up a storm even if Lan WangJi did not contribute much, he was seemingly paying attention to what was being said to him.
“So A-Zhan you have to write me a lot, I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’ve put my number into your phone at some point so make sure to use it. It is under the contact name ‘Husband’ just in case it wouldn’t be clear.” Lan XiChen came for Lan WangJi in that moment, parking his car so Wei WuXian shamelessly pulled Lan WangJi into a hug.
Lan WangJi took his sweet time, several months, but he has grown rather comfortable with Wei WuXian and lets him be quite physical at this point.
‘How often is a lot? I should research that.’
Laughing as he pulled back, he shoved his elbow between Jiang Cheng’s ribs as he bowed himself slightly. “Nice to meet you again Xiongge, this is my didi Jiang Cheng...say hi Cheng Cheng.”
Twirling around, he switched to Lan WangJi’s other side so his baby sibling would not reach him and leaned closer to his roommate while the other two introduced themselves properly as Jiang Cheng gave up skinning him alive for the time being.
“Gege I miss you already, have fun but make sure to miss me greatly and write me at least once a day okay?”
Lan WangJi nodded and got into the car with a small bow of his head.
Wei WuXian: Laogong, just got home, how bout u? I want pic! now!
Husband: It’s nice to hear that Wei Ying got home safely, we are still in the car. A photo of what kind?
Wei WuXian: bunnnnnnnnnies duh!
Wei WuXian: though Id also appreciate u 2, I miss ur pretty face.
Husband: I may send a picture of me with the bunnies if Wei Ying requires such option.
Wei WuXian: jsjdbfkjsbdfskhb
Wei WuXian: plsssssss
Wei WuXian: I fcking need tht in my life rn!!!!!!!!
Husband: I will not forget to provide Wei Ying with his wishes.
Wei WuXian: g8, now gege entertain me!
Husband: How does Wei Ying want to be kept amused? I could perhaps retort the plot of my current reading.
Wei WuXian: god help me from tht, no gege, not again, let’s play a game where I say something and you have to rhyme with it.
Husband: All right, as Wei Ying pleases.
Wei WuXian: I want to eat your bunnies.
Husband: That will raise some quandaries.
Wei WuXian: If only I could be there
Husband: Then Wei Ying would see some hare.
Wei WuXian: I already miss my husband!
Husband: I just dropped my ball pen.
Wei WuXian: That one actually hurt a bit.
Husband: Just like falling into the Sinner’s pit.
Wei WuXian: You should say it back!
Husband: Why? I am not such a wreck.
Wei WuXian: Damn, this game is turning you to a savage.
Husband: At least we’re not involved in esclavage.
Wei WuXian: When we move in together after uni, we could raise both cats and rabbits, maybe even pheasants. I want to eat them badly, it’s what I deserve.
Husband: If you’re hungry I’ll make you hors d’oeuvre.
Wei WuXian: Good, even though I have no idea what that is, that’s the least I’m expecting from my hubby.
Husband: It is entails a certain type of French snack. Thus soon you will be nice and chubby.
Wei WuXian: Lan Zhan do you ever feel stuck?
Husband: No, you might do because you’re a woodchuck.
Wei WuXian: It wasn’t part of the game, I actually meant the question.
Husband: Stuck how? Is Wei Ying sad?
Wei WuXian: Noooo, ofc not, nvm gege...let’s start a new round
Husband: Wei Ying is sure?
Wei WuXian: Yeah, so here we go: There’s a bird outside my window.

Watching Jiang YanLi making her infamous ribs soup, Wei WuXian was still smiling at his conversation with Lan WangJi. Every day he has written exactly once, just like Wei WuXian told him to do so.
“A-Jie, how did you know you’ve liked the peacock? Why would someone like another like that?”
“Is there someone specific in mind A-Xian?”
“What of course not” kicking his legs at the edge of the table, he averted his gaze when his sister turned back to observe him. “there’s no one I like, I was just curious.”
“Sure thing Xian Xian, well I do not think there is a particular pattern or known rules for this. If you like someone, you want to be around them thus missing the person if they’re not around. You will never feel the need to change yourself and even though you might find some of their traits annoying, you would also not want to alter those.”
“People tend to get worked up over how they feel towards someone, but I believe it’s more important how they make you feel about yourself. I love Jin ZiXuan because he makes me feel loved and cared for.”
Jiang YanLi removed the pot from the heat and placed it over onto the table, motioning towards his phone as she stayed facing him. “So it has nothing to do with the fact that you’ve been glued to your phone?”
“Hahahah no, of course not. I am just chatting with my roomie.”
“Oh I see...by the way your husband just wrote you.”
“A-Jieeeeee, no!” Wei WuXian jumped off of the table, whining loudly as he grabbed his phone out of Jiang YanLi’s hand and scurried out of the room to check what Lan Zhan wrote him today.
He knew that he will miss his Jiejie but he was also beyond excited to go back. It has been three whole weeks and he was not handling the distance well. Deciding that Jiang Cheng claiming they’re still on break was as good of an argument as any, he agreed to go out after leaving his stuff in their room still void of Lan Zhan.
The party was forgettable, as he kept thinking about Lan WangJi. He must have arrived and Wei WuXian was not there to greet him. Perhaps he might even be disappointed by the fact that he keeps breaking the curfew.
Dejectedly listening to some random girl-he had no idea what she wanted or why she kept trying to grab his arm but he never lets strangers touch him-he seriously reconsidered whether or not it was a good idea to come here in the first place.
Jiang Cheng has disappeared off to somewhere, so excusing himself from the clutches of the lady, he left a text so his brother would not look for him.
As he was wandering back, he kept feeling like he’s being followed which put him on edge, scaring him for some reason. His height, strength or even his less than decent methods might not be enough if someone will try to rob him so without looking back, he took out his phone.
“Yes I’m almost there, I can already see the university, barely a few minutes away.” Pocketing the device, he figured it was smart to pretend that someone knows where he is. It would have been even smarter if someone truly did.
Not wasting another second, he broke into a mad dash and running across the campus, he was jumping the benches and stomping all over the grass, trying to recognise the flowers in the midst of his unhinged hurry.
Entering his building he was still in motion so he took the stairs by three and was soon collapsed, on his knees before their room. He had no idea whether or not he was actually followed but he decided that it does not matter anymore.
Trying to catch his breath before entering, he was leaning against the door when it disappeared from behind him. A loud yelp escaped past his lips as he spread out on the ground, Lan WangJi staring at him from above.
“Lan Zhan” he smiled up, raising his hand to give a little wave. “are you going for a midnight stroll?”
Lan WangJi, “...”
Offering a hand, Wei Wuxian was quickly helped to his feet but could not help the laugh that bubbled out of him.
“Wei Ying is all right?”
“Just fine gege, do you never get the late-night zoomies? It’s great to blow off some pent up energy.”
“I’m not a cat.” Laughing again, Wei WuXian collapsed onto his bed while Lan WangJi provided him with a glass of water. Thanking quietly, he emptied the whole cup in the matter of seconds, panting obnoxiously as he finished.
“So how was your journey back?”
“Hm.” That was Lan WangJi’s neutral humming so Wei WuXian figured that nothing out of the ordinary happened. Plugging his phone in to charge, he turned it towards Lan WangJi with a wide grin.
His lock screen was the only picture he had of Lan WangJi. It was in his brother's yard, sitting on the grass with his legs folded a rabbit on his lap and another in his hands as he looked down at them. It was probably the most precious photo ever so even if Wei WuXian has done this to get a reaction, it still did not justify for him to change it two weeks ago when Lan WangJi has sent it.
Lan WangJi’s face remained tranquil as he sat down next to Wei WuXian, their shoulders pressing into each other.
‘I do not have one of Wei Ying, should I also ask for one? Is that how it works? I should perhaps google it.’
Wei WuXian just smiled kindly, his chest feeling warm as if he could not even begin to imagine being more content than this. “How come you’re not asleep Zhan-Ge?”
“I heard the noise, got up to check if someone was ill.”
“Hahaha, did I sound that bad?” Wei WuXian swiped to the left so his camera came up, angling it ahead, he threw his arm over Lan WangJi’s shoulder. “I'll let you know Zhan Zhan that it is part of the process. You will have to change your lock screen as well, to show the world who your bestest friend is. Now, smile!”
Lan WangJi did not. He wasn’t even looking into the camera but staring at Wei WuXian, thinking if that was truly how it worked but his expression looked serene and beautiful, not one bit mad so Wei WuXian decided that it will stay since it was perfect.
“Scoot” Pushing Lan WangJi out of the frame, he grinned widely as he remained alone in the frame, only Lan WangJi’s hand peeking in from the underside where it was being pressed down into his thigh by his own hand.
Making a pout and adding a wink, he snapped the photo and immediately sent it over even without checking it. “There, you can now fulfil your part of the bargain.”
He was not questioned again as Lan WangJi got his own phone and actually did as told. Wei WuXian felt strange instantaneously because of his stupid power, he was more than aware that Lan WangJi did not realise that Wei WuXian was teasing him.
Perhaps he actually thought that friends did this, in which case he’d consider Wei WuXian his friend or just wanted to get rid of him, unsure which one was the truth he still hoped that they’re close enough to at least be friends.
“Wei Ying should shower.” Chuckling humourlessly, he nodded his head and grabbed his clothes. “Sweet dreams gege, do not wait up for me.”
*
Wei WuXian was glad to see all of his favourite people at one table in the library. It was Sunday afternoon and they all had to get something done and agreed to do it together. He was obviously seated next to Lan WangJi, hanging off of him like he’s been doing ever since the school year started.
The new addition to their group might have been bringing immense joy to him but no one else seemed to care all that much. Lan WangJi had no other friends besides him and also was not the chatty type so unless he was asked, he did not talk. And just so it happened, besides Wei WuXian, no one dared to ask.
“Gege, did you watch the video that I sent to you. There was a raccoon and a ferret playing and it is just about the cutest thing I have ever witnessed...did you?”
“Mn.”
“And were you...”
“Wei WuXian, first of all shut up! Second of all how long do you think people will put up with your frivolous behaviour? Lan WangJi hates you!” Jiang Cheng was the one talking way too loudly for them to be in a library but before Wei WuXian could have told him off, Wen Ning spoke up.
He was also only here because of Wei WuXian, seeing that he was truly the only common point, holding their little group together and forcing them to socialise via their epic group chat where he sent memes every hour or so.
“I think it’s sweet, Xian-Ge even has him as his lock screen.”
“You what now?” Pulling out his phone with an enormous grin, he showed off proudly just how cute his Lan Zhan is with the fluffies. “How could I not Cheng Cheng, unlike you, I have a life so it’s only natural for me to set my Laogong and children as my background.”
Splattering indigently, Jiang Cheng had no time to truly unleash his inner beast as Lan WangJi suddenly pulled his own phone, deeming the conversation just right for him to insert himself into.
“I also have it.” That did the trick and no one had anything to say after that or even if they did none were capable of forming the words. That was probably the very first time Lan WangJi talked unprompted to anyone since they’ve been attending and it also was not a joke. There Wei Ying was, winking at them from Lan WangJi’s phone.
“Lan Zhan, what a great husband you are. You tell ‘em babe.”
Grabbing the phone out of his hand, he further baffled their friends by how careless he is and just how unbothered Lan WangJi remained by someone going into his text messages, clearly searching for something.
They all ended up watching videos of weasels so not much got done but Wei WuXian was thoroughly enjoying himself. He could not remember the last time he was genuinely that happy. So it was only natural for things to go astray.
It started with a phone call and now he was on his way to the hospital. Lan WangJi offered to drive them there in his brother’s car so Wei WuXian and Jiang Cheng were both in the back seats anxiously waiting.
Yu ZiYuan has just called Jiang Cheng that they have been in an accident. She was fine but Jiang FengMian needed surgery and it’s still in process thus they have no news at all.
Spending the whole night at the hospital, Wei WuXian sent Lan WangJi home, ensuring that Jiang YanLi or Jin ZiXuan will give the two a ride if needed. Thankfully the injuries weren’t too severe but his uncle will be bedridden for a few weeks at least.
“Only two people are allowed in at once.” Wei WuXian stepped back automatically, letting Jiang Cheng go in with his mother. By the time he came out, their Jiejie was also there so she went in next. At the end Wei WuXian was told he cannot see Jiang FengMian for the day as he was already too tired.
“Take Jiang Cheng back to school, tomorrow I will come to pick him up.” His arm was grabbed as he was shoved towards Jin ZiXuan, in the end neither of them ended up being necessary. ‘...always in the way, not like he’s needed...’
Rushing ahead by himself, he stood silently next to the peacock, the ghost of Yu ZiYuan’s hand still on his arm, reminding him that he does not in fact belong.
“Are you okay?” Looking to the side, the peacock was watching Jiang Cheng and his mother as his face was smothered, words pouring out to accompany the action. “Of course, I’m sure he’ll be fine soon.”
“A-Li’s been missing you” he still refused to even tilt his head in Wei WuXian’s way, but the sentiment was appreciated. “you can come by whenever if you have time, just call to make sure she’s home.”
“Why you wouldn’t want to hang out with me alone? Hahaha”
Even though it was past curfew, Lan WangJi was still up when he got back to their dorm. “Is Jiang FengMian all right? Are you?”
“Yes, the surgery went well, everyone was a bit of a mess and I am very tired.”
“Mn. Did you eat?” He did not.
“Yes, no need to worry. Good night Lan Zhan.”
He was neither told to shower first, nor was he further pestered. If he’s learnt anything about Lan WangJi then it was this. Once he was asked something, he kept himself to it thus with living his life in such an honest way, he has never questioned the intention behind other’s acts, nor did he argue.
Being passive-aggressive after a debate or moping forlorn keen on being left alone only to gain more attention did not work at all. If Wei WuXian would ask him to make food he would, if he'd ask to talk, he would listen, but being told to leave space, he was also fine with that.
Not quite certain if he was grateful for that or regretted saying it, he ended up falling asleep anyways. Thankfully it was Sunday yesterday but even though Wei WuXian went to the parking lot with Jiang Cheng on Monday, he was told to stay in his classes and not skip so he could only watch as he was left behind.
He did as told even though it made no sense for him to be there as he was unable to even tell what classes he attended, let alone what they were about.
Dejectedly buying some poke, he made sure that Lan WangJi’s was neither spicy nor did it contained any meat and went back to their room. He did not need to wait for long, soon joined by his roommate. For once Wei WuXian wished that Lan WangJi would be the one who’s capable of reading minds.
“Are you all right? Already back?”
“I did not end up going at all...hahah, how was your day? I bought us food, wash your hands and come eat with me before I get too lonely.”
Lan WangJi did not even remove his shoes, standing in the door his keys still in his hands. “Let’s go then, I’ll drive you there.”
“Wha...it’s okay, it’s late anyways and”
“Not that late, get a thicker coat.” Wei WuXian reasoned with himself as to why he should argue and coming up short, he did as told since Lan WangJi has asked him multiple times to not wear only a simple jacket in January.
The two set off, walking to Lan XiChen’s apartment building and soon he was taken to the hospital. “I will wait outside, Wei Ying can take his time.”
“Can you come in? Everyone should be gone by now. You don’t have to, this might be weird...never mind.”
“I can if you want me there.”
Leading the way, they soon entered the room, Wei WuXian only closing the door when he saw that his uncle was awake. “Hi there Zai Zai.”
Smiling right away, Wei WuXian’s soul almost left his body by how well he looked. On his left side, both his arm and leg were in casts, but other than that he seemed fine. “Come on, you only call me that because A-Cheng won’t let you.”
“No, it’s because you are my Zai Zai. Are you well? How’s university?”
“You know me I’m always good” they reached the side of his bed so Wei WuXian motioned towards Lan WangJi. “This is my friend Lan WangJi.”
Bowing deeply, Lan WangJi introduced himself as well and Jiang FengMian smiled brightly at him. “The one with the bunnies, right?”
Slightly mortified, Wei WuXian laughed to fill the silence as he waved around, almost like he’s flailing. “The one and only”
Turning towards Lan Zhan, he laughed some more. “hope you won’t mind, Ying and Guang are just too adorable not to show off.”
“Mn.”
They did not spend too long, wanting to let him rest but Wei WuXian promised to come tomorrow as well and as he got into the car with Lan Zhan he felt so relieved and happy.
“Thank you Lan Zhan, seriously. This meant a lot to me.”
“No need. Anytime.”
*
“I’m sorry” Bumping into a random girl, he listened to being cursed at in his head but did not turn back as he was running across the campus. It was almost ten in the evening and he was determined not to be late today.
He might have almost broken down their door but he made it back with a full minute to spare. Throwing himself onto Lan WangJi’s bed, he watched the other standing from his table where he was still writing his paper on the Ming Dynasty.
“Are you proud of me Zhan-Ge? I wasn’t late this time.”
“Mn.”
Laughing with delight, Wei WuXian did not particularly feel the need to get up, even though Lan WangJi has already reached him, his intention of getting into his bed crystal clear. “Come on, just this once can’t we watch a movie or something? It’s Saturday and we have no reason to be up tomorrow morning at such ungodly hours like ten at dawn.”
“What does Wei Ying want to watch?”
“You will? Oh, I have a whole list of films that I thought you would appreciate, I specifically made it for you.” Jumping off, he was quick to grab his laptop and unceremoniously got back into Lan WangJi’s bed, patting the small sliver of space next to himself.
Hesitating for a second, his roommate still got in so he pulled the covers over them and opened his computer. “I can pay for it.”
“Please Lan Zhan, who do you think I am?!” He was already downloading the first one he thought might be historically accurate yet still exciting to satisfy both of them.
They ended up watching three movies in total, at first Lan WangJi was somewhat critical, correcting everything that was wrong and also noticed strange mistakes within the takes on first watch like outlets in ancient China which was not usual for people.
Wei WuXian was greatly amused by the impromptu film critique but at some point he started making his own comments and by the end, neither were too pressed about what they were watching, talking over it anyways.
*
‘..not wake Wei Ying.’
He was still asleep yet his consciousness was also able to comprehend that he was somehow hearing Lan WangJi’s thoughts. He had no idea why Lan Zhan would touch him in his sleep and get in his bed but he figured it was normal for roommates to cuddle sometimes so he did not let Lan WangJi get out from under him instead held on even tighter.
Slipping back, he did not stir again for hours nor did he hear Lan WangJi anymore. The next time, he actually opened his eyes and realised that it was not Lan WangJi who slept with him out of nowhere since Wei WuXian was the one who fell asleep in Lan WangJi’s bed.
Neither mentioned it, instead they had breakfast together and even went for a walk when Lan WangJi complained about Wei WuXian’s health and the amount of moving he does which was ridiculous seeing that he’d deem the rushing around because of the CurfewTM is basically an exercise within itself.
YanLi was starting to get a bit of tummy and Wei WuXian found that fact adorable. He did go by their place more often recently to help out, him, Jiang Cheng and the peacock were all treating YanLi like she’s made out of porcelain even though she was still a long way from giving birth.
During these visits, Wei WuXian often found himself agreeing with the peacock and at one point, being left forlorn while his Jiejie went to the store to grab some fresh produce, the two actually had a fairly decent conversation.
As the months rushed by, Wei WuXian found himself a week prior to his exams with nothing being done or even started so he decided to go into productive mode. The only thing he did besides studying was eat, but even that only happened because Lan WangJi made him.
He declined every party and invitation to hang out, focused solemnly on getting through his exams. As much as Jiang Cheng mocked him, claiming that he’ll fail all of his subjects like this that’s how badly he was scowling when Wei WuXian scored as number three amongst all the students, with Lan WangJi being on first place which he felt like did not count and some random doctorate student on the second.
Receiving a scholarship, he showed it off for his A-Jie when they went home for dinner. Next week they have to pack up and leave the dorms for the summer. Wei WuXian was worried about how he’ll get through such event without Lan WangJi but he has some plans to make the other meet him.
“We’ll pick you up on Tuesday so be wholly packed by then...you, WuXian, I’m expecting you to get a ride home unless you are done by then as well. We might drop you off near the main street so it’s not much of a walk if you manage to get ready in time for once in your life.”
“But Mu...” Wei WuXian cut YanLi off with what could only be called a polite smile. “That is fine, I won’t burden you, Xiongge will give me a ride.”
“Good.”
For a few seconds no one talked, the atmosphere pending with nervous energy. The Jiangs went for a summer holiday-usually taking up a whole month-every year and Wei WuXian’s presence was a problem every single time.
This particular year-with them finally attending university-his Jiumu was not having it and flat out refused to take Wei WuXian with them, mentioning him moving out all together thus resulting humongous arguments within the family.
He was quick to step in, saying that he was planning to do so anyways but needed more money thus he was not going to make it anyways as he will need to work over the summer break. This time Jin ZiXuan was allowed to attend as well for the first time able to tag along with his wife, so Wei WuXian won’t be able to go over to their house either, leaving him no option but to actually look for a job, fearing he might go insane otherwise.
“Jiang Cheng did you already tell how much Professor Feng was praising you?”
The conversation started up again and whilst everyone was proud of Jiang Cheng, Yu ZiYuan did not hold back on scolding upon learning that her son only scored fifty-second amongst the pupils. Wei WuXian shut his mouth exceedingly tightly, keen to argue how amazing that was amongst the thousands of students where all sorts of majors were counted that were way easier than Jiang Cheng’s.
*
“A-Zhan, you will have to write me every day and we will also have to meet to catch up personally at least once a week.” Wei WuXian was packing with Lan WangJi helping him so instead of his usual method of throwing everything into his suitcase and stepping on it until it closes, he had a neatly packed luggage with his clothes not even wrinkled.
Filing away the rest of his crap in boxes, they were soon done so Wei WuXian offered to assist Lan WangJi as well. It was already Friday since he procrastinated and also did not want to leave Lan WangJi sooner than necessary, the Jiangs long on their way to Thailand.
“I won’t go anywhere, I live here.”
“Wait what, was that serious?”
“I could move to my uncle’s house, that’s where we grew up but it’s also on campus, my brother also asked me but I don’t want to bother him.”
“So lucky, what privilege that you get to stay here.”
“Wei Ying could too.”
“What?”
“There are many students doing courses during summer break, they are allowed to use their dorms over the holiday.”
“Summer courses?”
“Yes, some are for credit so you can finish earlier or it’s easier during the school year, some are for other skills.”
Wei WuXian sat back down, thinking hard. “Can I still apply?”
“I could make an exception for Wei Ying.”
“Hahahah, Lan Zhan let’s go and check out the options, if I find something good then I’ll stay and entertain you through the entire summer.” Throwing his bag back onto his bed, he grabbed Lan WangJi’s wrist and they set off.
His roommate was correct, Wei WuXian returned to their dorm with his schedule packed enough that he doubted he’ll have time for a job but he might graduate a whole year early not just a semester.
Lan WangJi was no better than him and he also had done credits even in High School but assured that he won’t be leaving Wei WuXian too early as he will still consider staying for a Master’s. Besides summer classes, he also applied for traditional music lectures since Lan WangJi will hold the course.
As their summer began, Wei WuXian applied to a pet cafe and worked on the weekends as a part-timer. It would not make him rich, but he loved the place a lot, mostly filled with cats and other small pets.
Every time he had a shift, Lan WangJi would come by and Wei WuXian has never seen animals so whipped before. In such environment, they were truly never impressed-especially seeing that cats have an attitude to begin with-having been pestered all day, every day by costumers.
But as soon as Lan WangJi stepped through the door, he was swarmed by the little fluff balls, all of them sticking to his side or even clinging to his pants to get up. As soon as seated, he had his lap full of cats, sometimes one falling off here and there when too many tried to settle on him. The table was also never wide enough to accompany his tea.
One particular cat hated basically everyone, it was a Maine Coon and had beef with not just the rest of the animals but also the people. Wei WuXian was allowed to scratch behind his ears sometimes but not always, it depended on his mood.
This particular fellow was named Bichen and he has taken a special liking to Lan WangJi, nonchalantly getting onto his shoulders every time without a fail. It wasn’t just the fact that he stuck to Lan WangJi when he was present but was very advocate in leaving with him. Usually Wei WuXian had to restrain the cat but always got scratched or bitten by the little beast.
His summer passed way too quickly and he was in high spirits all throughout it. He has never been happier during a break, seeing that he ‘moved out’ and wasn’t bothering the Jiangs at all, not just on their holiday, Jiumu Yu was almost pleased as well.
As school started up, he was unable to keep the job but he has become close with the owner-Luo QingYang-and was promised to be hired during the next break. He and Lan WangJi remained dedicated costumers though since it was truly a great place.
It was on their second weekend during the semester when Wei WuXian invited along Wen Qing and Wen Ning, seeing that the later was having his birthday. It was only the four of them but Wen Ning seemed exceedingly appreciative that they even remembered.
After forcing everyone in the cafe to sing and embarrassing the hell out of the poor man, they all stuck around to pet the kitties. Lan WangJi was swarmed like always so Wei WuXian had an easy time, sticking by his side and snatching up one of the hopeful candidates that tried to reach their bacon of hope but was only met with him instead.
Wen Ning was buried in a pile of fluff as well while Wen Qing disappeared off to somewhere with Luo QingYang. When they finally appeared again, giggling madly at something as they walked close to one another, Wei WuXian couldn’t help but whistle.
“Whoa, MianMian you are breaking my heart...how could you cheat on me so easily?!” He was smacked across the head from both sides at the same time, both of his friends approving of such brute methods of lecturing him.
Ducking to the side, he whined loudly, throwing himself across Lan WangJi’s lap like and oversized cat, disturbing the real ones’ peaceful slumber. “Lan Zhan, Laogong they are all mean to me, won’t you stand up for your husband?”
“Wei Ying should not flirt if it has no meaning.” Splattering loudly, he hit Lan WangJi’s chest, pouting even more when everyone laughed. “I was only flirting with you though and you’re my husband so that’s allowed.”
Lan WangJi, “...”
*
It was already November when Wei WuXian got the call, being the first who was informed by Jin ZiXuan that his Jiejie went into labour. Firing off a text, he collected Jiang Cheng and Lan WangJi offered to drive them to the hospital.
It took way longer than they thought it was appropriate but their nephew was well and healthy, as cute as one could be and Wei WuXian was close to tears when he was allowed to hold him. Little Jin Ling was very precious. Talking to YanLi, watching the child sleep while cooing for about three hours straight they finally agreed to return home and come by tomorrow to do it all over again.
About sixty pictures later-all of which was sent off to Lan WangJi as well-he finally reached back to his dorm, exhausted from nothing but goggling a newborn all day long.
“Isn’t he the cutest?” Showing the photos in person as well was mandatory, obviously, so that’s how they’ve spent their supper together. “Mn.”
‘Both of them.’
Swiping back to double check, it was genuinely a picture where he was holding Jin Ling and for a second he tried to seriously convince himself that he’s just hallucinating and there’s no real chance that Lan WangJi just called him adorable as well.
Making sure to not touch Lan WangJi’s body at all, he finally locked his phone and turned his full attention to his friend. “How come you don’t have a girlfriend?”
Raising his eyebrows in the slightest, the question was loud and clear to Wei WuXian who has been speaking Lan WangJi’s language for more than a year now. “No, I’m serious. You are probably the most handsome man I’ve ever seen, beyond kind, very smart and polite. I’d say that someone so perfect you’d have to hide something but I also know that you don’t so how come there aren’t herds of women or men following you everywhere?”
“Poor quality of conversation.”
“That’s also not true though, speaking of which were there actually people switching rooms?”
“Mn.”
“But why?”
“To break rules.”
“That’s so stupid, everyone acts like you’re scary or something...whatever if you want a relationship just let me know and I’ll make it happen. You’d be surprised how well I speak that language of love. I have a lot of experience so as your best friend I am entitled to know everything about your life and give advice when it comes to matters of the heart.”
Lan WangJi did not look impressed so perhaps he could tell that Wei WuXian have had exactly zero, null, aka none at all when it came to relationships but he was certainly wise so he figured a little white lie has never hurt anybody.
Spending the holidays in school as well, Lan WangJi was exceedingly thoughtful and invited him to his brother’s for New Year’s. It was at the very beginning of February so they both dressed relatively warm even though Lan XiChen lived quite close to their campus.
“Bunnies” was how Wei WuXian entered the huge apartment that looked fancy enough that he felt out of place even on the corridors of it. Realising how uncouth that was, he corrected himself and they went ahead to greet XiChen firstly then immediately took off to find the bunnies.
They had all the freedom in the world, spoiled rotten and allowed to roam wherever they pleased but were certainly well-behaved. Squealing obnoxiously, Wei WuXian hurried to catch one but both of them avert his advances expertly and rounding his form, went straight for Lan WangJi.
The black one was hopping around, stepping onto his feet while the white just got on his hind legs, clearly wanting to be held. Bending forward, Guang was lifted and placed into Wei WuXian’s hand. Lan WangJi did not seem pressed about the rabbits’ well-being, clearly trusting him to handle the little cuties.
Grabbing Ying as well, the two went back to the living room, sitting down with XiChen and the bunnies. It was probably the first celebration that he spent without alcohol or great parties since he was seventeen but he could not remember a time when he would have been happier.
The brothers were both amusing and not as quiet as they got judged and the rabbits were beyond precious. The Jiangs took off to visit family, forcing Jiang Cheng to go with whilst YanLi went to the Jin family to show off their baby so Wei WuXian was grateful that he did not need to spend this time alone.
Guang was a lot more subdued, calm and putting up with his prodding fingers, managing to fall asleep on him while Ying was full of energy and not shy about it. He might have put down kilometres but he always found his way back to Lan WangJi.
“I feel like you put some animal attraction spray on, how come even animals are all over you?” XiChen laughed at his remark, while Lan Zhan just ignored it completely, handing over Ying as well since he was way harder to capture.
His chest was warm and full as he looked at Lan WangJi, his arms full of the little fluffies as they watched some orchestra concert for the rest of the evening. The pair ended up staying for the night, sharing a bed in XiChen’s guestroom.
“Thank you for letting me come here, I know that this is a family celebration and I have no business here but I’m still grateful.”
“Wei Ying is always welcome, family too.”
Groaning loudly, he turned away and pulled the covers over his head. “Lan Zhan warn a man, my heart cannot take it. Why are you so cute?”
“Wei Ying had fun?”
“Lots, thank you.”
“No need.”
*
‘...always a mess, so adorable. What would happen if I would’
Falling out of bed, Wei WuXian managed to put distance between them before that thought would have finished, his elbow aching as he blinked his eyes open, Lan WangJi’s face coming into focus. There was a slight frown on his face as he offered a hand, getting out of bed himself.
‘was uncomfortable? Perhaps I should not sleep in the same bed again or maybe’
“Thanks, sorry if I scared you it’s a bad habit. Sometimes that’s just the way I like to get myself to wake up faster. It might look silly but it’s very effective...how was your sleep?”
“Mn.”
“Glad to hear that, I know that it can be a pain to sleep with me, when I was little I actually used to kick in my sleep. Whatever, I also had a great rest, we should always share a bed, you are very comfortable.”
Saying their farewell, they stopped by his Jiejie’s place, the three only just reaching back when they got there. Introducing Lan WangJi, Jiang Cheng also soon got there and they all watched fascinated how Jin Ling tried to eat blended pumpkins with bananas only to spit it right back out.
Wei WuXian was trying his best to carry on, his A-Jie and the peacock going upstairs to unpack thus leaving the three lonesome with the baby. He strongly supposed that they only dared to do such thing because Lan WangJi was also present.
When little A-Ling grabbed a handful out of his mouth and splashed it straight into Jiang Cheng’s face, he finally stepped in, grabbing a cloth and cleaning the child. Wei WuXian offered a napkin to his brother, simultaneously watching Lan WangJi effortlessly feeding their nephew.
He was suddenly very well-behaved as Lan WangJi firmly told no and grabbed his hand when he tried to reach for the spoon. A-Ling appeared to go into a trance and Wei WuXian suspected that he, himself, did as well, both staring at Lan Zhan with wide eyes, absolutely fascinated.
Jiang Cheng was not mad for once, not truly managing to ever hold his scowl when it came to the little brat. He might have been only five months old but he had all of them wrapped around his fingers. Surprisingly it was YanLi who managed to control the child and exercise some stern disciplining as the peacock was just as gone as the other two.
He was aware that it did not do to spoil a child but that’s up to the parents, as an uncle, Wei WuXian took his duty exceedingly seriously and he was ready to provide the little boy with anything and everything.
Once fed, YanLi took him up to nap so after they all caught up, they left the two to rest as well, seeing that the Jin family might even be crazier than their own one, they probably needed that anyways.
“Let’s go out.” They agreed on a hotpot place and went out for dinner. It has already started to warm but like always it has just snowed even though it was March so Wei WuXian figured it was smart to choose boots. Did he choose them or was he forced to wear them by Lan WangJi was besides the point.
They talked about their summer, agreeing to stay in the dorms again and complete more credits. As Lan WangJi placed a peeled shrimp into his bowl it finally downed on him and with such force and so sneakily that he almost felt like he was running from a dog by how his adrenalin spiked as if seriously in danger.
It was so random, but he listened to MianMian repeatedly talk about how nice Qing-Jie is and how she only puts up with Wei WuXian because he was the one to introduce the two. She kept going on and on about Wen Qing feeding her, always coming by the cafe, so in return she started baking pastries for her and they were both gaining weight rapidly thus starting to work-out together.
According to A-Yang, someone will not care for your health or whether you have eaten or not unless they are your parents or in love with you.
Originally Wei WuXian thought she was wrong, Lan WangJi was definitely the type who would worry about everything and everyone, way too kind for this filthy world but what he finally realised were his own feelings.
Thinking back, he wasn’t just oblivious but straight up dumb to believe that for so long he was this content because they were good friends and not because Lan WangJi played so nicely into this strange fantasy that Wei WuXian was contented to conjure.
Pleased to pretend that his life was suddenly this way, surrounded by this domestic bliss as if he could truly just have whatever he wants. Lan WangJi was not just objectively amazing but Wei WuXian realised that perhaps he was biased and it wasn’t that everyone was jealous but that they did not feel what he was.
Raising his gaze from the shrimp to Lan WangJi’s golden eyes, it almost felt like being slapped back into reality. He was suddenly gripped by this urge to lean forward, across the table and kiss his friend and once he realised this pull, it felt impossible to ignore.
His laugh came out strangely choked, but he said nothing about it, fishing some mushroom out of their twin pot to give to Lan WangJi. Walking back to their room, Wei WuXian tried to resist the urge to grab Lan WangJi’s hand and just tell him that it was normal for friends to do.
He has done that many times already, shamelessly cruel as he took advantage of Lan Zhan and his naive attitude without even realising why he was doing it in the first place.
“Wei Ying what’s wrong?” The door was held open for him so he entered first, trying to remove his boots swiftly so Lan WangJi could fit in as well. “What? Nothing, why would anything be amiss?”
“You looked troubled.”
“Hahahah, I was just thinking about one of my assignments. Let’s watch a movie, that would definitely help.”
It did not, in fact it might have been the stupidest thing to suggest with Lan WangJi pressed to his side, thoughts all cute and distracted, so inviting that Wei WuXian had a hard time functioning. He was way too busy holding himself back and together to actually make a single remark, not even sure what they have watched in the end and it was pretty obvious for Lan WangJi as well.
“Can I help with the assignment? We could go to the library tomorrow and find some references for you.”
His heart was beating so fast as it trembled by how adorable that was and it felt so unfair. He was so incredibly happy so why did he need to fall in love? How will he get over himself fast enough not to affect their friendship?
“Can I stay here? I already warmed this spot.” Lan WangJi agreed even though it did not sound like something friends should do anymore. Wei WuXian was blind and dumb.
‘..hope he feels better soon, never seen Wei Ying so distracted and sad.’
Even though he was abusing the power he held over Lan WangJi, being his only friend, Wei WuXian could not help but turn around and bury his face into Lan WangJi’s neck, one of his arms circling his torso.
‘This is wrong of me. I should talk to Wei Ying, I cannot do this anymore.’
Freezing for a second, he realised that he has really overstepped even to Lan WangJi who was still too pure and polite to say anything. Getting off of him, he was quick to get out of bed, watching how Lan WangJi’s eyes opened, his hand hovering to the side where it lay on Wei WuXian just seconds prior.
“I need to use the restroom, sleep.” True to his word, he went into their bathroom, closing the door behind himself. Splashing some water in his face, he tried to reason with himself but it was so hard to get anywhere.
He made a decision though and he was stubborn by fault so he hoped his trait will show itself this time as well and he will be able to stick to it.
He got into his own bed, turning his back on Lan WangJi and soundlessly closed his eyes that may have been brighter than usual. He heard that Lan Zhan moved but he did not call out and Wei WuXian appreciated it.
*
“Wei Ying...please”
He was doing very good these past few weeks. His heart may have broken and threw a couple of temper tantrums but he managed to hold himself accountable and avoided Lan WangJi like the plague.
Deciding that it will be necessary until he gets over his feelings, he got back at ten in the evening every day, not wanting to be late so Lan WangJi wouldn’t have a reason to talk to him but also not reaching back earlier so there’s no chance for communication.
It hurt way more than he would have guessed, especially when he caught sight of Lan WangJi’s face upon deciding to run the other way on the corridor. Just like right now and his legs refused to obey him, incapable to ignore such a tone that absolutely shattered his heart.
Turning back, he put on his best fake smile though he was apparently going slightly unhinged as his eyes started to glaze over, shining brightly under the fluorescent lights. Lan WangJi appeared confused, frustrated and incredibly miserable all at once and for a second he felt like he was not strong enough for this but also had no right to deny Lan Zhan.
“Wei Ying, please talk to me.” Reaching out, Lan WangJi’s hand halted and dropped back down poignantly which only further worsened Wei WuXian’s own desolation. Grabbing the hand before he could have thought it through, he was slapped even harder, though he presumed he deserved it.
‘...done wrong, I need to know to fix it. I can do anything, I would do anything for Wei Ying but why won’t he tell me. How can I ask without sounding like...’
Taking several huge steps back, he bumped into a wall, the handle of the window hitting his head hard. Lan WangJi stepped forward right away, his hand rising for a second time as if keen to look or sooth the bump but it dejectedly abandoned its route yet again.
For a moment Wei WuXian considered the option that he has pushed their friendship beyond repair and it was at that point that the tears actually escaped. Lowering his head, he tried to convince himself it was because of the physical pain, perhaps if he believed it then Lan Zhan will as well.
“Hm, let’s talk but not here, come on.” He extended his arm but did not end up taking Lan WangJi’s own one instead rushed ahead towards their room. They still had classes but neither seemed to remember or care in that very moment.
Entering their room, he instantaneously felt trapped as if he had truly nowhere to run anymore and he felt like if he could perhaps get away now then he would be able to pretend that everything was still fine.
After minutes have passed, Lan WangJi reached out, this time determined to talk as he grabbed his shoulder to face him properly. Wei WuXian broke the contact right away, scooting further up on his bed and pulling his legs up to his chest. He, on the other hand, was doing everything in his power to avoid eye contact.
“Lan Zhan, I have to tell you something. Well, not just one thing but multiple things. I wished so badly that things would not have changed, that they would forever stay like how they used to be but that was very stupid of me, how could they?” He refused to raise his gaze, even though he could feel Lan WangJi’s own one.
“First of all, I know you won’t believe me but I can do anything to prove it...I can read minds when I touch people.” The silence was thick, the tension almost palpable as it surrounded their forms, neither speaking up first to break it. He figured that Lan WangJi did not expect their conversation to go in such direction.
Just as he managed to convince himself to further explain, to justify, to assure that he was not joking around, Lan WangJi spoke up and it might have baffled Wei WuXian just as much as he has previously done, since that was not what he was expecting.
“So it’s something I thought of? What I was thinking about when we slept together?” Snapping his head up, he watched Lan WangJi’s expression, still composed but also almost shameful. Reaching out, he grabbed Wei WuXian’s forearm again, seemingly forgetting that he can’t do that.
‘...can fix that, I knew I should have told...’
“Lan Zhan” ripping his arm away, Lan WangJi’s frown deepened as Wei WuXian rubbed his face irritably. “I just told you that I can hear your thoughts when I touch you and you go ahead and do it? What is wrong with you?”
“I have nothing to hide from Wei Ying, please I wanted to tell you but I was...I apologise I was wrong.”
“Lan Zhan, just what the hell are you going on about?! This has nothing to do with you and your thoughts!!” Suddenly fired up, he pushed on Lan WangJi’s chest, repeatedly punching him as more tears streamed down, screaming each word with a new found anger. It was not directed towards Lan WangJi, he should have been hitting himself but he did not quite realise what he was doing.
“That has nothing to do with anything. I’m just a fucking coward, I was avoiding you so I could get ahold of myself again. I was getting way too caught up pretending that this fantasy world where I am actually allowed to have you is real. I fucking love you and it’s not easy to pretend that it’s not the case.”
His voice broke as he fell forward, pushing his face into his bed as he screamed illegibly. At least Lan WangJi hasn’t started to pack yet, perhaps expecting Wei WuXian to move out, which made more sense actually.
“So Wei Ying did not hear my thoughts after all.”
“What now?” Straightening back up, he hoped that there wasn't snot all over his face but with his luck, who knew?! Lan WangJi did not look right to him, this was not the reaction he expected and prepared for thus he was shocked into a different dimension when Lan WangJi reached out to wipe his face, single-handedly crumbling the rest of his sanity.
'I thought it made sense for you to be mad if you could hear my thoughts. I wanted to tell them, I tried many times but I’m not good with words. I thought you realised that I was in love with you.'
Blinking dumbly, Lan WangJi did not pull his hand away thus letting Wei WuXian to focus on the wrong thing, however, before he could have said anything he suddenly remembered Lan WangJi’s words. I have nothing to hide from Wei Ying.
Lan WangJi’s face was serene but his eyes were like molten lava, not one bit cold as they were taking in every single detail about the man ahead of him, he seemed to be going about this just like he did with everything in life and such honesty carried on shocking Wei WuXian.
‘Maybe it’s for the better, like this you can understand me perfectly. I want whatever will make Wei Ying happy, I’ll do anything to make it happen. I can pretend this never happened if you need a friend or actually be your husband.’
“Lan Zhan, I...are you serious? Am I even allowed to be that happy?”
‘You deserve everything.’ Laughing strangely, he grabbed Lan WangJi’s cardigan and yanked him closer, letting their lips crash together. The kiss was a bit wetter than what would probably count as acceptable, seeing how much crying he has done but to him it was perfect because it was Lan Zhan.
“So you’ll actually be my husband now?”
“Mn.” He was kissed again, cutting off his laughter as Lan WangJi promised him eternity, Wei WuXian felt content with no more than the present.
