Mayas mind was spinning when she woke up this morning. In two days their break would begin. A break which none of them wants. This break is not because of a betrayal like the last time. In fact they were more in love than ever, it was a break because of stupid visa regulations. It said that it could take up to three months for the new visa to be granted. Even longer if one considers the fact that everything is slowed down by the freaking pandemic.
She tried to calm herself down. She had to be the strong one this time. Carina was already nervous enough, she didn´t need a girlfriend close to a nervous break down. So she tried one of the breathing techniques she learned in therapy and she was actually surprised that it worked somehow. She got up and started making breakfast. She opted for a lighter version with some fruit and yogurt since tomorrow she would have the day off and Carina promised to make her french toasts for the last time in whatever it would take to come back.
“Good morning Bella” Carina said while she tried to suppress a yawn. She smiled when she saw the beautiful smile of her beautiful girlfriend while she looked over her shoulder to greet her good morning. “Why are you up so early? I thought you have the late shift today and be back tomorrow morning?”
“I couldn´t sleep anymore” Maya shrugged and instantly relaxed when she felt Carina hugging her from behind. “I miss you already” she whispered with a sad smile.
“No Bambina, we said no crying. And with you saying sad things I will start crying. So no! We still have almost two days together, and we´re going to make the best out of it! Okay?”
“I love you Carina.” Maya said as she turned around to kiss her Carina. “I love you too”
A few hours later when Maya was just starting to get ready to go to her shift she got a call from Andy.
“Hey, is everything alright?” she asked, because they would see each other in 30 minutes and she couldn´t think of anything which couldn´t wait until then.
“Yes Captain. I just wanted to tell you to stay home tonight?”
“What? Why? What do you mean?” she asked confused.
“We arranged to have inventory tonight, so that we don´t have to go on calls. So see it as a win. You´ll have more than one day off plus you don´t need to see the sad faces of everyone when they learn that they have to count sooo things tonight.”
“But Andy…”
“No Maya. This is your last night with Carina and you won´t spend it at the station. I know you said you´ll have the full day tomorrow before she leaves in the evening, but Maya… this woman is the love of your life. Make every minute count” Andy had her speech prepared, because she knew Maya would react this way. But she didn´t expect her to not answer at all after that “Maya? Are you still there?”
And then she heard her sniff “Thank you Andy. I´ll make it up to you!” - “You don´t have to. Enjoy the rest of the day. I will definitely enjoy mine when I get to boss the others around. Bye Maya” “Bye. Thanks” But Andy already hung up.
When she reentered the living room she saw Carina running back and forth from the bedroom to the living room. Her suitcase was on the table and next to it was a large pile of clothes which Maya assumed were in the suitcase before just to be discarded for some other items.
She saw that Carina was stressed. More than she was before she took the call. Maya decided to make a switch in her plans since she has more time now than she thought she would have before.
“Carina can we talk for am minute?”
“Maya I can´t. Don´t you have to get ready for work? I need to keep packing. I´m freaking out because I stupidly booked only one suitcase and now I don´t know what to take. I…”
“Carina I love you…” she said trying to calm her down.
“But?” Carina angrily interrupted he
“I think we should take a break, we… ”
Maya couldn´t finish her sentence. Carina closed the suitcase and put it forcefully on the ground “I knew it! I knew you would freak out on me! Why don´t you trust me" she pointed her finger back and forth between them "Why don´t you trust us to survive these few months apart from each other. Why Maya, why?” Carinas Italian temper took over her, when she stormed out of the apartment. Maya was still processing what happened in the last few moments. She got out of her shock when Carina slammed the door.
She ran after her and had to suppress a laugh when she saw Carina struggling with the large suitcase on the staircase.
“Carina wait. Give me that!” she took it from Carinas hands and carried it down.
“Are you done yet?” She asked with a smirk on her face.
“What do you mean, am I done?” Carina still speaking very loudly “You just said you wanted a break”
“Yes!… From packing!”
“Maya, what do mean?” now her eyes were filling with tears.
“Baby, come here” Maya said when she pulled Carina into a tight hug and softly stroke her hand up and down her back “Why would I want to have a break from us. You´re the best thing that ever happened to me. Andy called. I don´t have to come in tonight. So I can help you with packing later. And I thought I might give you your first present today to make it a bit easier for you” She kissed Carinas forehead and carefully used her thumb to wipe away her tears.
“I´m sorry Bella. I think I´m just stressed. I´m sorry I overreacted. Forgive me?” A small smile crept on her lips when she looked into those ocean blue eyes she loved so much.
“There is nothing to be sorry about. I can´t imagine what must be going on in that beautiful mind of yours right now. I think it´s normal to be a bit edgy” she kissed her softly on the lips. She took Carinas hand into hers and with the other she took the giant suitcase “Want to bring this monster upstairs again?”
Carina nodded and halfway on their way up she asked “So… you´ve mentioned a present?”
“I might have” Maya giggled. “Come, sit on the couch I´ll be back in a minute” she said as she went to the storage space to get one of the presents she had hidden. When she returned and saw Carina looking at her with that bright smile on her face she knew that they would be okay. It would be three hard months but there in this couch was the person she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. What would be three months compared to a lifetime.
With this thought on her mind she made a decision. She passed a confused Carina and went straight to the bedroom. She put the present on her bed and rummaged in her nightstand.
Carina now standing at the door of their bedroom “Maya, what are you doing?”
Maya turned around with a little black box in her hand “Well since I´m already on my knee”
Carina gasped
“Dr. Carina DeLuca. Will you marry me?”
