Uninvited: The Unintended Guests

Summary:

A loose retelling of the NES/PC game classic video game 'Uninvited' from the point of view of a tomboyish young woman in search of her brother. This story combines elements of the PC version as well as the edited NES version as well. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it!

(After several years, I finally completed it!)

UNINVITED: THE UNINTENDED GUESTS

CHAPTER 1: ARRIVAL OF THE UNINVITED

As the darkness slowly began to fade away from my vision, I was greeted with the sight of my car rammed into a tree and the smell of gasoline combined with the pain in my head, all while finding myself pinned beneath the steering wheel of my car.  All of these acted as clues to remind me of what had been happening to me just a few minutes ago... that is, if it had been a few minutes ago perhaps.  While I didn't entirely know how long it had been, I did remember what had been happening to me right before I lost consciousness.  I also remembered my name, which was a relief since I knew head trauma could cause memory loss if it were serious enough.  Fortunately, that didn't seem to be the case here.

My name was Jessie Hinton, and I was nineteen years old.  I was heading home from the movies with my little brother Dylan, who had just turned twelve the other day.  I had taken him to see that new horror-themed comedy movie that had just come out, and we spent plenty of time laughing at it and overall having a good time.  He was happy to go because he hadn't been to the movies in a while, and I was glad to go because I had just finished my finals and was worried about getting a good score on them.  We pigged out on popcorn and peanut butter cups and drank plenty of soda.  We made sure to go to the bathroom before we left, because you know what your mother always tells you, right? And at this moment, it seemed like going to the bathroom was the least of my worries, as was the issue of worrying about my finals.

I had remembered as we were driving home, Dylan and I had been chatting it up about the movie when suddenly he yelled to look out.  I looked just in time to see a strange, shadowy figure in the road.  It looked like a human but I couldn't be sure.  What I could be sure of was the fact that if it was in fact, human, then I was going to hit it if I didn't do something.

Slamming on the brakes, I swerved to avoid hitting the figure only to wind up crashing into a tree.  That was the last thing I had remembered before the darkness came up to claim me.  Now that I was awakened, I smelled the gasoline and realized the tank must be leaking.  As if that weren't bad enough, my little brother was missing, and while I thought  he must have gone for help, I knew that I didn't have much time to sit and think about it with the gas tank leaking.  With a grunt, I pried myself out from under the steering wheel and unbuckled my seat belt.  Who knows what could have happened if I wasn't wearing it?

I tried to open the door but it resisted a little, having apparently been damaged in the crash.  With a grunt, I pushed harder as I tried to open it, and I found myself tumbling out of the car as I ended up pushing so hard that I lost my balance and fell onto the ground.  Without missing a beat, I pushed myself up onto my feet and proceeded to run about half a foot away before turning around just in time to see the explosion which ended up engulfing my car in flames.  I felt a mixture of sadness and relief, as while I knew I had escaped with my life, my parents had bought me that car as a present for my upcoming graduation, and while we remembered to buy insurance, I still wasn't sure how I would explain to my parents what happened.  About how I had swerved to avoid a strange figure and wound up here.

What was 'here' you ask?

As I got a look at my surroundings, I realized that my car had crashed in front of a mansion, and it wasn't the type that the rich and famous lived in either.  No, this one had a grey stone architecture to it with white highlights surrounding the windows of the two-story estate.  Or was it three? I could see something above the third floor, but I wasn't sure what it was, perhaps an attic maybe?

What mainly mattered was finding out if my brother had gone in there looking for help? I hoped he hadn't, because looking at it I could sense some kind of evil presence within it.  I didn't know why at the time, but I could sense that it wasn't just paranoia I was feeling.

I noticed a nearby mailbox and, in hopes of maybe finding out where I was, opened it to look for any mail.  All I could find was a single envelope, and even then it didn't help me too much, as it didn't have any type of address on it, just the name 'Master Crowley.'

I opened the envelope and inside I saw a letter as well as some kind of object which I wasn't entirely sure what it was supposed to be.  I decided to read the letter first.

Dear Master,

I must sincerely ask for your forgiveness, but I am unable to aid you in your battle against your disciple Dracan due to my failing health.  I am aware of how evil he has become, and while you taught him well, he became too powerful for his own good and began to use his powers for evil purposes.  So in order to help you, I have enclosed an amulet that I am sure you will recognize.  I ask that you wear it and think of me, for I know it will protect you from the undead.  Please, still the evil for me, my friend, and release it for the sake of the family.

Fare thee well.

I put the letter back in the envelope and frowned a little.  There was someone living here whose last name was Crowley, and he had taught someone named Dracan special powers that made him become evil? And what was this about undead?

It was then that I began to shiver a little.  If there were really undead creatures (and who knew what else) on this estate, then I had to find my brother fast!

I was about to open the door when I remembered the pendant.  I reached into the envelope and took it out.  It was a circular style pendant with a beautiful jewel set in the middle, which I proceeded to put around my neck.  As soon as I did that, the jewel in the pendant began to sparkle and flash, and for a moment I was blinded so I had to cover my eyes.  When I looked again, I saw that the doors to the mansion had opened.  For a moment, I began to shiver again, realizing that there might truly be more to this place than just its strange looks.  I was torn about entering.

After a moment, I shook my head and set my jaw resolutely.  If Dylan was in there, then it was up to me to find him and get him out! I stepped through the doorway quickly, only to spin around as I heard the doors slam shut behind me.  Go figure.

There was no turning back now.  I had to find my brother.
